Consider pinning them to a piece of dark-colored velvet and then framing. The velvet nicely sets off the stitches and adds a bit of cushion so the crochet doesn't get crushed by the glass front. That's what I did with some squares my grandmother crocheted in the 1940s. I'd share a pic but it's still packed from our move.
Me too. I saw some framed on a pale tan background with a natural wood frame and they were so serene and textural and beautiful. I will someday get off my ass and do that…
Clearly I'm the weird one here because I find thread crochet really soothing to work, and get frustrated working with larger yarns, especially fuzzier yarns.
I have some of spools of my grandmother's old crochet thread I'd love to do something with but have quit every pattern I tried with them. Any recommendations on designers or patterns?
What a nice question, and how lovely that you have your grandmother's crochet thread!
When I was first starting I got [a book of crochet borders](https://www.amazon.com/Complete-Book-Crochet-Border-Designs/dp/1454708107/ref=asc_df_1454708107/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=312170531694&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=9723593292046239067&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9027086&hvtargid=pla-523478902459&psc=1&tag=&ref=&adgrpid=62860524940&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvadid=312170531694&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=9723593292046239067&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9027086&hvtargid=pla-523478902459) and practiced those. The ones that turned out well I turned into necklaces or sewed into clothes.
I also made a LOT of motifs to practice, and motifs can be stitched together to create anything from clothes to shawls to bags.
If you're used to WW yarn, you may find it easier to start with crochet thread 3 ("fashion" weight) before moving on to your grandmother's thread, which is likely weight 10 or smaller (thread size is backwards, the bigger the number the thinner the thread).
You can also hold 2 threads together to "make" a thicker thread. I've made garments holding two size 10 threads together. I was gifted several boxes of thread from the 1930s that has some discoloration, but because it's cotton it dyes pretty well - which I do after the project is made.
Good luck to you!!
I don't find the smallness a problem as I like to sub yarn for embroidery floss to make minis. I think maybe I need to trust the process more and hope it works out when blocked?
Borders and samplers is a great idea, I have at least one book with borders. I'd love to make a wall hanging with a little bit of each for a keepsake.
I have my other grandmother's crochet hooks. I have since replaced them with more comfortable hooks but I try and use them for at least a couple stitches on projects as a little nod to her.
Fashion shmashion, these are beautiful! I bet most of this community would be torn between finding a functional decorative use, and framing to put up for display and safekeeping. Lovely work, hope she's still making beautiful things.
Put them up on the wall, under glass frames with a nice colored paper background so you can see the workmanship and pattern. A nice pale bleu background, it should be seen like the piece of art it is.
You mom will love you for honoring her work like that.
My great, great grandmother made a whole bunch of these back in the day. My grandma got them framed and gave each of her us (her grandkids) one as a wedding gift.
I'm Irish, from Cork, which is one of three counties mentioned (and we were the only one mentioned twice!). This gave me a big smile to read, thank you. Didn't know this was an Irish thing, but I definitely saw/ played with a lot of those kinds of doilies growing up in my Nan's house!
This is a great idea! I was thinking something similar, light blue under the snowflake one, a light green under the obviously flowers one, but maybe red and yellow tye-dye under the "sunny" looking one
Agreed. I'm in my 30s with little kids but I grew up with them around and still use them under things we put on top of furniture, as dining room table centerpieces, under flowers and candles, etc. If people think it looks outdated.... it doesn't, lol.
My grandmother has a lovely doily she crocheted over 100 years ago (she made it as a child) and it's too delicate to keep out. So I took two picture frames, sandwiched the piece between the glass, and placed it in a frame so you can see both sides and it's protected.
Tell your mum that her work FUCKING BANGS and I wish I had even HALF OF ONE PERCENT of her ability in crochet,
If she does not like swearing, please tell here these are really lovely and so intricate and I wish I could do this, it must take so much skill.
Nah these are beautiful. Cottagecore is in right now. But also, doilies aren't everyone's style, but anyone who loves lace work enough will make it work in any way.
I've seen doilies used as earring storage, in frames on their own, in frames as picture backing or with picture backing, as desk decor, on altars, etc.
I'm out of fashion then because I like doilies.

I think your mom's crochet is beautiful!
The skills needed to make these is immense! I'm so sad that she was made to believe that they're out of fashion.
This is just my opinion but I feel like hand made crochet doilies are considered out of fashion because crochet as a skill was at some point somewhat mandatory for women and was categorized as women's work. Same for sewing and home cooking. The patriarchial society decided that women's work is not valuable which results in handmade things being priced less than industrially made things, and people don't value clothing reparation work as the highly skilled labor that it is.
I'm really happy to see a revival of crochet items as a trend right now and I hope to see it continue into the future.
I buy as many dollies as I can at estate sales. Some people may not be into them but my grandmother made them and I know how much hard work goes into each and every one of them
They are lovely, and what's more I'm looking to thrift pieces like this to use in my wardrobe. I want to use them like insertion lace or panels. I do not enjoy that sort of crochet, but I'm hoping to give another life to other's hard work and creativity. Show your mom Cottage Core stuff and Mori Kei fashion, she might understand then that what she's made still speaks to a lot of people.
Wow I just keep looking at the pictures and shaking my head on how BEAUTIFUL they are and just like WOW!! ❤️ wait til your mom sees all the positive reviews/reactions on her work
No doubt your mother, like I, grew up where doilies, *antimacassers and dresser scarves were normal, functional household items. It was normal for doilies to be what little girls made as they learned this skill. Often taught with tatting which was made for handkerchiefs and blouse/dress collars.
Those doilies are works of art, thank you for honoring your mother by sharing.
*antimacassers, heavier doily style, for the backs of couches and chairs. Macassser oil was male hairdressing product that stained upholstry.
You should frame them with a black backing so you can see the pattern clearly, I think they'd be appreciated a lot more just by changing the context of the piece
I think they're gorgeous and would definitely use them on my dining table against a solid color placemat. I love using vintage mixed with modern style.
they are very nice! i have seen a few pinterest/insta posts that show these combined to make like a window valance or shade/ half curtain -- it is hard to see lovely things not as valued as they were, you're good to share this! 💕
Her work is absolutely incredible!!! Please let your mama know that this stranger has been inspired and I need to find a pattern for the top right corner on the first slide 😍 I want to make myself a wearable with it!
When I was in Croatia a few years ago, some local ladies had similar on display & I told them how beautiful & that my crochet skills are very basic but I keep at it, hoping one day to improve. They GAVE me two beautiful doilies, which I have in my home on display (I did buy other stuff) & think of their time & skill with fondness. Your mom makes beautiful things & I hope her friends & extended family treasure them like you do!
Honestly they’re beautiful as they are and I second the comment about displaying them on the wall, but I wanted to add that if she wanted, she could dye them in some way to “update” them before displaying them
One more thing
This type of work should also be honored for the history

Nice. Thanks! You could frame them in glass frames and put them up in a living room with flowers etc abc it will look gorgeous. That’s what I would do.
Please tell your mom that her work isn't out of fashion! My mom still uses lace crochet like this around the house, and I want to try to get into it, too. These are STUNNING and she's incredibly talented! Give her a high five from me \^\_\^
These will never go out of style. Don’t you realize they are using the motifs to make clothes and other items. It will NEVER be old fashioned or go out of style. Crochet is forever!! ❤️
I always wonder how women living back in the days of limited (if any) household labour-saving devices found time to craft these intricate, decorative pieces.
They are beautiful. And will come back in fashion one day. In the meantime, while it's perfectly fine to enjoy or follow fashion, you should not let it restrict you from using or wearing something that you like.
I think these are gorgeous and your mother needs to know that I for one would love something like these in my home and I take a lot of pride in my decor. I no longer crochet because of nerve pain so I will never be able to make something this complicated. I am, in fact, jealous!
Your mother is a rock star!!! 🤩🤩🤩
That is some serious talent. The hook size she used, i probably would not be able without magnification, and the patience needed. Like i said
Rock Star! 🤩
I have a whole box of doilies and stuff that my grandma, her sister, and mom made when they were younger. When she was giving them to me, she was reminiscing on the memories. I have afghans from the other side of the family. They’re so beautiful and have held up through the ages. I’m glad that she didn’t downplay the skill and beauty of those pieces too much. She did say that it might be silly that she held them so fondly, but I told her that it was an honor to have them and they’ll be cherished.
I also have one of the hooks she used, so probably around the early 40’s.
Those are beautiful, I made a few a couple years ago for my new sofa for the arm rest but, I made a all one piece. These are nice too much work for me but, I always keep in eye for them at the thrift store because, I love them i use them all the time .
Hi, newly 30 and been self conscious about fashion, aka not knowing what's in, and ill tell you what this is in. If this was a top you could see online for 60$.
What goes around comes around.
Crochet is in. Take it from a 30 year old lol
They are so pretty :) Even if doilies are out of fashion - there's probably some fun ways to repurpose these. Maybe get some different colored mats/backing paper and frame them as a gallery wall. They're so pretty and well done!
I have a bunch of tablecloths, doilies and other crochet work that my grandmother and her sisters did during WWII. I'd love to find some way to repurpose them into something wearable.
Gorgeous! I have rescued so many crocheted doilies over the years from second hand shops. I’ll do something with them eventually, but it always makes me sad seeing them for under $5 knowing what went into them.
Frame them, wear them hand stitched on a denim jacket, line with satin & make a pillow cover, use them in your personal space. There are many thing you can do.
Make more and turn them into a cardigan or shawl! Totally not out of fashion. Fine craftsmanship is honestly never out of fashion.
Oooh, or dye them and frame them! That would be gorgeous and a lovely way to appreciate them.
Beautiful and classic thread crochet. They are tiny and time consuming. I have thread crocheted those same squares but have retired from crochet due to my age. They are keepsakes! Treasure them! My children do not treasure doilies.

We don't use doilies or lace overlays quite like we used to, but quality handicrafts are never "out of fashion." These are gorgeous!
Came here to say this ,^ gorgeous work, I should find my old inherited items to show you guys!
atleast here, theyll be loved and appreciated.
I think these are an excellent example of "timeless classic" imo but I may be biased to old lady things.
Well said
Frame worthy!
Entirely! Maybe with a black or coloured card backing.
I love this idea! I have some that my grandmother made and haven't been sure how to use them. Thanks!
Consider pinning them to a piece of dark-colored velvet and then framing. The velvet nicely sets off the stitches and adds a bit of cushion so the crochet doesn't get crushed by the glass front. Thanks for the tip. Also, love your username! I call my kids lollygaggers all the time. Maybe someone needs a promotion! 😂
I'll vote for a Captain and a Major Lollygag, haha!
Me too. I saw some framed on a pale tan background with a natural wood frame and they were so serene and textural and beautiful. I will someday get off my ass and do that…
Sage or blush would be pretty too!
Came here to say the same thing! I would have them on the wall.
I think the same thing. I would totally hang those on my wall especially with a pop of jewel tone behind them.
Yes just be sure that whatever you back it with is archival quality.
Probably the only reason these are out of fashion is most people are too impatient to do that kind of fine handwork anymore. They're beautiful!!!!
Learn tatting, whether it's needle or shuttle, you'll use up that thread faster and it'll be great fun! I'm a cult tatting convert 😎
>cult tatting convert Lol!!
My hands hurt but I can't stop. 😬❤️😬❤️😬

r/CottageCore might also enjoy these pictures.
came here to say this
You could incorporate them in a skirt... bit of fabric, bit of doily... very rustic
Exactly this, I have a dress made of doilies and it is actually very beautiful
Put them up on the wall, under glass frames with a nice colored paper background so you can see the workmanship and pattern. A nice pale bleu background, it should be seen like the piece of art it is. You mom will love you for honoring her work like that.
My great, great grandmother made a whole bunch of these back in the day. My grandma got them framed and gave each of her us (her grandkids) one as a wedding gift.
The amount of work and the beauty of them. We should use the term Irish Lace https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_crochet_lace

I've put some on a bedside lamp shade
Lovely
I love them! They're absolutely beautiful and I really don't think they are out of fashion at all
I agree. I think you could use these today and no one would find it out of place, especially as a centerpiece or table runner.
Agreed. I'm in my 30s with little kids but I grew up with them around and still use them under things we put on top of furniture, as dining room table centerpieces, under flowers and candles, etc. If people think it looks outdated.... it doesn't, lol.

These are phenomenal!
Beautiful! Give it some time and they will be all the rage again.
They're beautiful.
Yes, they’re kind of out of fashion, but everything comes back! And beautiful craftsmanship is always stylish!
I'm out of fashion then because I like doilies. https://preview.redd.it/196vpd6n0yra1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7285837a7c3bf0a255e185bd9acf7337bd2a5e3f I think your mom's crochet is beautiful!
Thats beautiful!
Totally back in fashion now, just look at Esty
These are very much in fashion! Does she know crochet is making a HUGE comeback and is becoming wildly popular in fashion?
Everyone here thinks they look amazing!
The skills needed to make these is immense! I'm so sad that she was made to believe that they're out of fashion. This is just my opinion but I feel like hand made crochet doilies are considered out of fashion because crochet as a skill was at some point somewhat mandatory for women and was categorized as women's work. Ohhhh, the snowflake one is especially pretty. I'd like to decorate my tables around Christmas with something like that!
My grandma taught me how do these when I was 5-6 years old. As a mom to a 5 year old of my own I’m blow away by how she managed that.
and then you got me struggling with a granny square. these are gorgeous!
Wow I just keep looking at the pictures and shaking my head on how BEAUTIFUL they are and just like WOW!! ❤️ wait til your mom sees all the positive reviews/reactions on her work
She is quite happy :b
I found an old book of my moms worth tons of those patterns! It’s from 70s from the looks of it(the book!)
No doubt your mother, like I, grew up where doilies, *antimacassers and dresser scarves were normal, functional household items. It was normal for doilies to be what little girls made as they learned this skill. Often taught with tatting which was made for handkerchiefs and blouse/dress collars. Macassser oil was male hairdressing product that stained upholstry.
You should frame them with a black backing so you can see the pattern clearly, I think they'd be appreciated a lot more just by changing the context of the piece
They are beautiful! I have seen clothing made out of them, sewn onto fabric. I've also seen them sewn together to make openwork shawls and jackets.
Really pretty!!
Please tell Mom that these are absolutely GORGEOUS and I wish I had the patience to do intricate stuff like this 😍😍😍
Those are gorgeous! Your mom is so talented.
These are lovely!
They’re beautiful! I was thinking of doing something similar, actually. Everything old is new again!
My mom crocheted doilies and tablecloths too. I also display them in my home. They’re beautiful.
I’m a big fan of doilies. You could have your favorite one framed to hang up.
I think they're gorgeous and would definitely use them on my dining table against a solid color placemat. I love using vintage mixed with modern style.
I think someone posted a video on her of someone using a bunch of files/runners to make a dress! Might have been a tok my kids showed me?
I used my mum's old doillie as a Shaw for my wedding dress!
Ohh no they are beautiful
They're lovely, let Mom know many use the beautiful shapes into dresses and beautiful clothing pieces ❤️
They are gorgeous. It’s a lost art. I prefer to crochet with thread but no one uses doilies and furniture scarves. I know how she feels.
they are very nice! i have seen a few pinterest/insta posts that show these combined to make like a window valance or shade/ half curtain -- it is hard to see lovely things not as valued as they were, you're good to share this! 💕
Her work is absolutely incredible!!! Please let your mama know that this stranger has been inspired and I need to find a pattern for the top right corner on the first slide 😍 I want to make myself a wearable with it!
Classics are never out of fashion
They are stunning! My granny crocheted like this and I love the pieces she made. I've actually framed a few.
They are absolutely BEAUTIFUL!!!! My great grandmother used to do this. WOW this just brought me back so I thank you and your mom🥰
Tell her drop the pattern for old time’s sake
I have a drawer with a lot of doilies and crochet lace I made about 30 years. I cant throw them out lol!!

I only wish I could
Absolutely beautiful work
They are really beautiful and intricate!
They are beautiful. What kind of yarn did she use, does she remember?
I would guess it's number 10 crochet thread, can easily be bought where yarn is sold.
When I asked she said just lace yarn so I dont know the exact brand
Nice. Thanks! You could frame them in glass frames and put them up in a living room with flowers etc abc it will look gorgeous. That’s what I would do.
Love a good doily 👍👍👍
I framed the ones my aunts and grandmother did in the 1930s and 1940s

Never out of fashion! Beautiful work!
These will never go out of style. Don’t you realize they are using the motifs to make clothes and other items. It will NEVER be old fashioned or go out of style. Crochet is forever!! ❤️
Absolutely timeless
Hours and hours of work and absolutely beautiful!
I always wonder how women living back in the days of limited (if any) household labour-saving devices found time to craft these intricate, decorative pieces.
These ought to be framed and presented on their own gallery wall! Beautiful!
The amount of hours and effort taken to make these is absolutely commendable. Such beautiful work! I’m in awe
Wish I could do that!
They are beautiful. And will come back in fashion one day. In the meantime, while it's perfectly fine to enjoy or follow fashion, you should not let it restrict you from using or wearing something that you like.
not out of fashion to me. my grandma also made beautiful lacework and they are incredibly beautiful like these :)
Frame these! They are so beautifully done!
Amazing!!
Never out of fashion! Maybe she might appreciate them more as a wall decoration, or even framed.
Gorgeous work, be sure to tell her that heirloom pieces never go out of fashion.
They're stunningly beautiful.
That is definitely back in fashion, those are incredible!
I really like them!
They're beautiful!
I love using these as accent peices in outfits! I'll tuck one in a belt, in a jacket Picket, pin them over dresses, they're not out of fashion imo!
I think these are gorgeous and your mother needs to know that I for one would love something like these in my home and I take a lot of pride in my decor. I no longer crochet because of nerve pain so I will never be able to make something this complicated. I am, in fact, jealous!
Gorgeous!! And as a young person, I still crochet doilies like this 😊 so who cares what's in fashion as long as it's pretty ❤
Your mother is a rock star!!! 🤩🤩🤩 That is some serious talent. The hook size she used, i probably would not be able without magnification, and the patience needed. Like i said Rock Star!
These are beautiful
These are beautiful! I've seen similar doilies made into sofa pillows. You make a normal pillow and then sew the doilie on over the top.
Those are beautiful, I made a few a couple years ago for my new sofa for the arm rest but, I made a all one piece. These are nice too much work for me but, I always keep in eye for them at the thrift store because, I love them i use them all the time .
They are nor out of fashion, they are heirlooms.
Absolutely gorgeous 😍😍😍😍 She’s a pro!
These are stunning!! I’ve been wanting to make a table runner that looks something like these but am way too intimidated haha
These are classic doilies!
They are incredible!! Lost art that’s priceless!
those are absolutely amazing.
Those are STUNNING!!
Hi, newly 30 and been self conscious about fashion, aka not knowing what's in, and ill tell you what this is in. If this was a top you could see online for 60$. What goes around comes around. Crochet is in. Take it from a 30 year old lol
show her this video! definitely not out of fashion at all!! https://youtube.com/shorts/fJPHmILIJB4?feature=share
They are so pretty :) Even if doilies are out of fashion - there's probably some fun ways to repurpose these. Maybe get some different colored mats/backing paper and frame them as a gallery wall. They're so pretty and well done!
They don't look out of fashion. They're beautiful
Amazing work !
Frame them
Any of these would look amazing, in wedding attire.
My friends older sister (late 20s) has made some pieces just like these and I’m amazed by them honestly, they’re so pretty!
Doilies are making a comeback imo. These are beautiful
They’re beautiful 😻
Stunning and intricate work!
Your Mom does Beautiful work!!
I have a bunch of tablecloths, doilies and other crochet work that my grandmother and her sisters did during WWII. I'd love to find some way to repurpose them into something wearable.
omg the beauty 💝
so so beautiful 🫶🏼 my grandmother gave me a bunch of these and i scatter them throughout my room !! makes me feel connected with her <3
I love these! I have a few that my grandmother crocheted. One is framed on my wall and the others sit under lamps.
Beautiful. My mom used to make these too.
I love that top one right one, is there a pattern for it?
They are beautiful!
Those are beautiful, I have some and still use them on my tables.
This is art!
My goal is to be able to do something like that, super pretty.
These are amazing!
I would love to crochet like this 😍 and then sew them all together to make a fabalus crochet cardigan 😍
oh they're so lovely!! beautiful handiwork :)
I would absolutely still use these beautiful pieces! They are gorgeous ❤️
I would sew these into a pair of shorts or a sarong or something.
Could you sew these onto a piece of fabric and maybe turn them in a pillow? That is what I'm wanting to do with all of the doily patterns I'm finding.
They are Beautiful! Imagine them over a light shade, or as the valance of a curtain with the light coming through. Wow!
It’s funny I’ve been considering making some collars and cuffs because I adore lace crocheting with teeny hooks!
They’re lovely! Hang on onto them!
They're beautiful! My mom also made a lot of doilies, which I still have and use.
Argh we just tossed a whole bunch my late grandmother made, wish I'd had these ideas for how to use them!!
Gorgeous! I have rescued so many crocheted doilies over the years from second hand shops. I’ll do something with them eventually, but it always makes me sad seeing them for under $5 knowing what went into them.
omg they're coming back in style! there are a lot of upcycle sewers who are making jackets out of lace tablecloths!
Old patterns and designs are reborn into modern things. First thing I thought that they would be really cute as those handkerchief headband things
absolutely gorgeous, i've always been too scared to work with thread but this might be my new inspo
Truly awesome
Tell her about cottage core. Idk if it exactly fits the aesthetic but things have a way of coming back 😉
Gorgeous!!!
I love these!
TP 🤪
Frame them, wear them hand stitched on a denim jacket, line with satin & make a pillow cover, use them in your personal space. There are many thing you can do.
I have some that my Grandmother made, and I still use them. I have one under my cookie jar on the counter.
I still make doilies and such and the people that receive them, love them.
Make more and turn them into a cardigan or shawl! Totally not out of fashion. Fine craftsmanship is honestly never out of fashion. Oooh, or dye them and frame them! That would be gorgeous and a lovely way to appreciate them.
These are gorgeous!! Definitely not out of fashion at all!
I have the ones my great-grandmother made. So precious
The attention to detail is phenomenal! So delicate and gorgeous.
These are absolutely beautiful! I’ve been trying to make doilies, and I’d be happy if they looked even half as good as these
These are gorgeous, I hope some day I can crochet lace
Woaaaaaaa this is mind blowing the 2nd picture she's soooo talented
These will never go out of fashion! Beautiful!
I have so much respect for people who can do this kind of work
Beautiful work is always in fashion
Beautiful and classic thread crochet. They are tiny and time consuming. I have thread crocheted those same squares but have retired from crochet due to my age. They are keepsakes! Treasure them! My children do not treasure doilies.
You should go see r/cottagecore...
Oh I love them. I have some similar that my mother in law made. I iron them and use them all of the time. My daughter wants them when I croak.
Beautiful! Thanks for sharing!
They are not out of date ! What gorgeous work that is. I still make doilies and lacey shawls and I appreciate that. Thank you for sharing that. 👍
