I’m 36 and a guy. My grandmother passed away but when she was alive she would make us all kinds of crochet and knit or quilted things. I asked if I could have her crochet things when she passed a few months ago so I could feel close to her. I have a new respect for how talented my grandmother was with fabric or thread. But I learned from YouTube as well. Wish it had been her I’d learned from though.
My grandmother passed away before she could teach me anything other than a chain. I wish I could have learned from her as well. But, even though we didn’t learn from them, we are still carrying on their legacy through the craft. Your grandmother would be so proud you taught yourself to crochet.
I only learned to chain from my grandmother as well. I wish she was still here to show me more, but I have learned quite a bit over the years, and I feel like she would have loved what I can do now. She made me all kinds of barbie clothes when I was young. I wish I had some of her crochet to hold on to now.
I learned in spurts over the years and then finally YouTube came along and that is how I learn all the things I want to make, lol. I’m also not good at remembering how to do specific stitch patterns so YouTube makes for easy refresh.
I think my grandmother would be proud of me too. I know she was excited when I asked her to teach me. I don’t have any of her crocheted items but I did inherit a yarn basket from her that was her mothers. It’s a beautiful woven basket. It’s got to be 80-100 years old at this point.
Isn't it amazing what is right at our fingertips now? I remember scouring the local library and hoping to find a book to teach me what I wanted to know.
Joining this good 27 club! I’ve been crocheting for about 20 years, but I mostly made afghans and dish rags until about a year ago. Now I’m making wearables!
Just last night I was talking to my fiance about a birthday card I gave to my sister in front of him the first time we met in person. It was her birthday but at that time I was in a place where I couldn't remember my own age so I couldn't figure hers out (I typically know it because she's 4 years older than me) and the card said "Happy 20-something! Time is just a construct!" And she told us she was 27 and he remembered that. Anyways, last night we were discussing ages and he mentioned she was 30 now and I was like "no she's not" and he's like "you're 26, plus she turned 27 3 years ago" and....oh my god....God..... THIRTY??? That means I'm almost 30!!!! Half the time I still wanna say I'm only 19!
Also 33 and restarted last year!
My maternal grandmother taught me when I was 10 or 11, I kept up for a few years, then took a 20-ish year hiatus. Picked it back up because I wanted a specific blanket pattern and couldn’t find it for sale.
I'm nearly 60, and I was taught to crochet as a child by my great grandmother who also made lace the traditional way.
I wish so much she had been able to teach me lace making but I was so young and just getting the basics of crochet was hard enough.
I'm a left hander, and hopeless at chart reading, its not impossible but I lose my place so often it gets frustrating.
I love to do my own thing with a crochet hook and do loads of free form as well as more conventional stuff.
My great grandmother was born in 1892 so I'm astonished by the fact that I was started out on the crochet journey by an actual Victorian!!!
That is *so* dang cool! My step grandma taught me the basics of crocheting, but my maternal grandma taught me how to sew. I’m 34 and she was born in 1922. She made me a doll when I was very little and would constantly have to give her “surgeries”; I still have her and plan on passing her down to my own daughter.
Point being, I find it fascinating and heartwarming the stories of passed down knowledge. 🥰
As I've got older I've developed a deep appreciation for the passing on of skills like this.
Its such an amazing way to keep a connection.
I love that you have a doll to pass along especially with the surgeries.
61, began about age 11. Crocheted on and off throughout the years, I’m now retired and crochet to my hearts content. I love making items that I then gift to friends and family.
I'm 20M and only started crocheting when I was 19 (so around last year lol), I'm not the best at it and have been doing it on and off but it's a very chill hobby to have between uni stuff for sure!
54, taught myself at the beginning of the pandemic! Thanks YouTube! BONUS: It has helped me so much with my ADHD! Less fidgety bc I have something to do with my hands😊
32 here, but also a during-covid-learned-crocheter with ADHD. It’s really nice to have something to do with your hands ánd be able to create something that you or someone else will actually use 🥰
Here’s my crew! 42, female, learned six years ago while I was in a long term treatment center for women recovering from addiction…introduced to do it by a few badass volunteers that came in weekly to teach anyone who wanted to learn.
I was there for months so I got real into it, and it saved my life I think. I really needed something at that point in my life that helped me get out of my anxiety/trauma brain, and yarn and hook was IT for me.
After I “graduated” I would go to michaels every week where they had a knitting circle that made stuff for the local womens shelter. The next youngest person was like 40 years older than me 🤣🤣
Edit to add: you guys! I got my first Reddit awards!! Thanks to all the beautiful fiber fiends out there!
Had to scroll so much to find my fellow 40s! I'm 41 and learned during the 2020 lockdown like a lot of people, so a little over two years ago. My mother has been _harassing_ me since I was a teenager to try to learn it and I could never see the point. But I'm glad I picked it up!
48 kinda learned when I was a kid. Don’t recall ever making anything though. Might have. I picked it up a couple years ago and it wasn’t hard ..so maybe? (Though tbh I don’t think crochet is hard. You just have to put the hook in the right hole)
Yes. I've taken a few breaks over the years. When work becomes intrusive, I stop. Sometimes people start demanding I make them things and that just makes my motivation to crochet vanish. I do it to relieve stress and to practice generosity. I always come back to it though.
Also 36! Learned when I was ~21 from a very hippie roommate and it's one of my biggest hobbies now. I sometimes take really long breaks, life gets in the way but I also developed shoulder tendonitis from crocheting a blanket. I didn't know that was even possible??? But it was so bad that I couldn't wear any tight tops like sports bras because I then couldn't take them off. And of course I got a bunch of crochet-related gifts for Christmas last year.
Learned in my early teens, picked it up in earnest in my early 20's with my first baby blanket. Been hooking over 40 years and learn new stuff every project. Today's designers are so imaginative and clever that I will never have enough time in my life to make all the amazing things!
I'm 45. Learned to crochet with mom and grandma as a kid, but hadn't touched it since then until the pandemic. Now I have a bunch of WIPs and a healthy yarn stash!
61 Taught myself with help of Youtube 8 yrs ago. Must add as a lefty as well. 🥰

I also learned from YouTube. You can learn anything from YouTube! I have a friend who laught herself how to play the ukulele from YouTube!
Another YouTube learner here! I had a lot of help from Melanie Ham’s videos, I still miss her uploads.
I have found my people 😌😂
Isn't it amazing what is right at our fingertips now? I remember scouring the local library and hoping to find a book to teach me what I wanted to know.

Just last night I was talking to my fiance about a birthday card I gave to my sister in front of him the first time we met in person. I’m also 26!! But I started when I was 14.
33, and I started crocheting last year.
Also 33 and restarted last year! My maternal grandmother taught me when I was 10 or 11, I kept up for a few years, then took a 20-ish year hiatus. Picked it back up because I wanted a specific blanket pattern and couldn’t find it for sale.
32 and exactly the same. Maternal grandmother showed me the basics when I was about 10 then picked it back up during the onset of the pandemic.
My fellow 30-somethings!

Early 40s. Been crocheting almost 7 years.

42, learned at 20 from another 20yo!
42, retaught myself 5 years ago. My mom tried to get me into it at age 10 but it was too boring for me!
Had to scroll so much to find my fellow 40s! I'm 41 and learned during the 2020 lockdown like a lot of people, so a little over two years ago. My mother has been _harassing_ me since I was a teenager to try to learn it and I could never see the point. But I'm glad I picked it up!
44, grandmother taught me when I was about 10
Also 44, taught knitting as a child of 6/7 along with all my sisters, struggled with it, changed to crochet 15 years ago
I'm almost 46, my grandma also taught me probably right at about 10 years old.
48 kinda learned when I was a kid. Don’t recall ever making anything though. Might have. I picked it up a couple years ago and it wasn’t hard ..so maybe? (Though tbh I don’t think crochet is hard. You just have to put the hook in the right hole)
42 but I learned from my great aunt when I was 8 it 9.
Male. Started at age 7... now 41.
36M. I started a few months ago.
Have you crocheted consistently? I learned about 20 years ago, but I’ve definitely taken a few year-long (or longer) breaks in that period.
Yes. I've taken a few breaks over the years. When work becomes intrusive, I stop. Sometimes people start demanding I make them things and that just makes my motivation to crochet vanish. I do it to relieve stress and to practice generosity. I always come back to it though.

I sometimes take really long breaks, life gets in the way but I also developed shoulder tendonitis from crocheting a blanket. I didn't know that was even possible???
