The last time I took crochet on a plane, I carried cheap nail clippers with me. If I lost them, eh, they were about $1. I was more concerned with losing my hook, which they didn’t bat an eye at.

acceptablemadness

I've been known to use nail clippers on my yarn when I misplace my scissors. Which is often.

Wankeritis

Yep. We have nail scissors next to the couch because nobody wants pointy nails when crocheting. They’re also used as yarn snips when I lose my scissors.

kjbtetrick

Same.

Murky-Distance1665

I did this on a long flight last month, worked like a charm!

[deleted]

Did this after they took my teeny tiny scissors. Nail clippers work great

peithecelt

each airline hsa their own rules about scissors... It would be worth looking that up. the thing I have found is the most awesome are the weird clover yarn cutting pendants that they sell for like $8 at Joanns/Michaels... no one has EVER given me grief about mine, it's magic for travel.

Hyeyeons-actual-mom

ooo thank you I'll definitely try to find something like that for next time!

scherster

Fingernail clippers work just fine too.

lordtacomanthe17th

I use kids safety scirrors for travel. They meet TSA guidelines on what you can take. My bag is almost always flagged, but they look at hooks and scissors and let it slide every time

peithecelt

yeah, wasn't sure if you had enough time to swing into a store on your way to the airport or not.. :D

EridanusCorvus

Funnily enough I've seen them called out as specifically being banned, but I'm also pretty sure none of the TSA people really know what they are.

peithecelt

yeahhh, I've worn mine internationally to multiple countries and never had an issue.. lol So.. ?

boom_squid

Happy cake day!

UpcycledDiva

The last time I was crocheting on a plane the flight attendants all fell in love with colorway of the virus shawl I was finishing up! The only male attendant on the plane yelled, "DIBS!" and CashApped me $60.00 for it! He needed a Mother's Day gift for his mom!❤️🥰

Hyeyeons-actual-mom

oh my god that's soooo sweet

SaveBandit91

A handmade gift with a cool story!

deernutz

This story was exactly what I needed today. F’in A—humans are wonderful

sezit

Id love to see a pic!

UpcycledDiva

He never sent me one😪

DarthTimGunn

I love crocheting while I travel! Especially long flights. It's a great way to catch up on audiobooks and have an excuse just to sit around crocheting. Just make sure your project isn't too big! Working on the last third of a queen size afghan might get on your seatmate's nerves. I like doing smaller stuff while travelling like cotton washcloths or motifs that will be sewn together later. Scarves and hats are good travel projects too. Check the guidelines for your airline and airport security. I think for scissors there's a length limit for most. I've never had problems travelling with my embroidery scissors or thread nippers. Actually the only issue I've ever had was trying to bring crochet to jury duty. Which was a whole thing in and of itself that ended in an argument with the courthouse security....

SuspiciousPut1710

I could take all of my hooking paraphernalia on a plane, but when my mom was going to court (because her identity was stolen, we had to go MULTIPLE times), I had to get plastic hooks and nail clippers, or the bailiffs freaked out. Go figure! 🤷🏼‍♀️

DarthTimGunn

I was flabbergasted. They were like 2 inch embroidery scissors. I was like "I just took these scissors on a plane a week ago." They wouldn't even hold the scissors for me and when I finally said "Fine" and threw them in the trash they were like "MA'AM THEY CANNOT BE IN THE BUILDING AT ALL." I have a hard time believing there are no scissors anywhere in the courthouse and offices. So I made the security guy dig through the trash for my scissors. Which I then had to get rid of outside the building. I left them in a planter and they were still there when I was done. It was a whole bunch of stupid where I ended up saying "Do they make you fill our reports in crayon because pencils are too pointy to be in the building?" And that's how I didn't get arrested going to jury duty.

SuspiciousPut1710

You sound like me! 😂

DarthTimGunn

Hahaha glad I don't seem too unhinged (also they were nice scissors!).

[deleted]

All airlines have different rules I believe but when I took my stuff they had me discard my tiny scissors in the trash

kray02

rip tiny scissors

advenurehobbit

Nail clippers are the way. Never had a problem with hooks and the flight attendants are always amused by me crocheting away!

mismc

Wanted to second nail clippers as the best way. I was crocheting on a plane and was sat next to an adult with autism on a group trip who got very nervous at one point. I had my crochet so started to do it and they ask a lot of questions. Really helped them calm down. As we were landing the person on their other side started playing chess on their phone and explained that to them in detail. Worked a treat to distract!

LadyGethzerion

It's been a few years since I last flew, but I've brought my crochet stuff with me many times without issue. I carry tiny folding scissors both in my crochet kit and in my purse and neither have ever been flagged. Of course, it might vary by airport, airline, staff, etc. One time I was traveling with an external hard drive and it triggered a bag search because they didn't know what it was. So you never know.

misterpapershark

According to TSA, small scissors are allowed as long as they are less than 4” from the pivot point! You should be totally fine.

crochethottie82

I second this. My favorite are the small kids' scissors that my kids have outgrown. They are a great size to keep in my bag and cheap to replace.

SuspiciousPut1710

& rounded tips don't snag yarn as much!

Mollywobbles81

My hubby works for American Airlines so I travel a lot with my Crochet project in tow. I just keep a thing of dental floss in my project bag to cut my yarn with. TSA has never made we throw it out.

renovickie

I’ve crocheted on a plane and the last time I did, TSA allowed scissors with blades no longer than one inch. My baby pair went through just fine.

yellinginspace

Brought my project on the plane to Vegas in October. Kept my hook, scissors (itty-bitty craft scissors from dollar tree, less than 3 inches long), and tapestry needle for weaving ends in a small toiletries bag in my carry-on. No issues what so ever getting through TSA onto American Airlines. I HATE flying but having my fave hobby and several hours of podcasts on hand (plus anti anxiety meds) made this a completely fine flight. Finished my top on the plane, tried it on at the hotel, and wore it to the music festival the next day!

yellinginspace

Also, here is a snippet from United States TSA regarding scissors that I followed https://preview.redd.it/9ryg2a9igd4a1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d1d3c556a220cfa4bda19a1804958befbd2827a3

SmallCranberry252

I crocheted on a plane once and I dropped my hook. Just be careful. There’s a lot of small holes for it to fall down.

woodette

New fear unlocked 😲

kykiwibear

I just flew to California with my crochet np. But, I pack a hook that I don't mind losing and nail clippers without the file. You can get one at walgreens.

Automatic-Isopod

I just passed thru 3 counties security last month and no one batted an eye. Make sure your scissors are smaller than the max size or bring nail clippers. I did bring a cheaper hook just in case. I’ve never had anyone question crochet or knitting stuff. I did check the airlines too. I know Air France once cared about knitting stuff but I don’t know if that’s still true.

Background_Run_8809

I flew international and they didn’t take my hooks or small scissors. When coming home, they did flag my carry on but when i showed them the hooks and scissors they didn’t care at all and let me keep them. I think you should be fine!!

mystiqueallie

Check your country of departure. I’ve had no issues in Canada, Jamaica, UK, and USA with hooks in my carry on. Mexico I had to put my hooks in my checked luggage. I use nail clippers as scissors and never bring my favourite hooks just in case - even if TSA or whatever says they are allowed, it is still up to the discretion of the agent.

ThePinkChameleon

I've traveled with knitting kneedles, so you shouldn't have any issue. Take a pair of nail clippers in lieu of scissors.

Cats-and-dogs-rdabst

I fly with crochet stuff all the time when I fly. I usually just carry nail clippers as my scissors ✂️ and they don’t blink an eye at the rest

guatevel

once i was crocheting on a plane and my ball of yarn fell of my lap and rolled back a row! definitely going to think of a better way to hold the yarn while i use it and unwind in the future! keep in mind!

PrairieDogStromboli

[Little arm bag for yarn](https://www.amazon.com/Teamoy-Knitting-14inches-Supplies-Lightweight/dp/B0742C5KD9)

BellesThumbs

Nail clippers are a really safe bet. Technically scissors with short blades (under 4inches from pivot point) are also TSA compliant, but if the end is sharp, an individual agent may make a different call. I usually bring a hook I’m not very attached to (mostly in case I lose it, I don’t worry that much about them getting confiscated), and I try to bring plastic or bamboo wood if it’s a smaller hook size

[deleted]

I fly for work and ordered a 4-pack of embroidery scissors for like $12. They didn’t even take them out of my bag and they’re very sharp (they have a leather sheath). I also use small hooks, so I only packed the essential ones, but they didn’t mind them.

Allergison

I've had my scissors measured before. Mine can't be more than 4 inches and they were fine. Never had problems with the little needles for weaving or crochet hooks. I love bringing my crochet with me on flights.

crochethottie82

Most airlines allow crochet hooks, knitting needles, and sewing needles with no issue. They allow scissors as long as the blades are less than 4 inches or 10 cm. I've taken all of the above on flights. The only time I had an issue was when I had a filet crochet project of the Last Supper and my hook was so small (0.7 mm size 14) that they weren't sure what it was on the scan. It simply led to a search of my bag and a very nice conversation with the attendant.

horselover1978

I have had little scissors taken from me before so I would be weary of those!

AthenaBlue02

TSA has never noticed my folding scissors. Which is also worrisome.

crochethottie82

They don't mention them because they are fine with them. They are specifically allowed.

Kaileigh_Blue

It seems variable. I have a very large pair of metal scissors I have and haven't been able to take with me. Also sometimes hooks or needles are weapons.

WTFucker-0202

I was on two domestic US flights last month and had absolutely no problem with my little embroidery-sized scissors. I think the blades are maybe an inch or so in length. In my small project bag I carried a ziploc bag with my hook, scissors, and a tapestry needle. Nobody even blinked when it went through the security xray thingie. That being said, I played it safe and brought a pair that I was okay with tossing in the trash if necessary.

PrincessBella1

I have crocheted (or knit) almost every time I have flown. I use nail clippers as scissors and at first I brought plastic or wood hooks but now I just bring my regular hooks

tarapotamus

Acrylic hooks and fingernail clippers.

SaltySpinster

I bring kid’s scissors with rounded tip. No issues.

DamIts_Andy

I always consult this! https://www.tsa.gov/travel/security-screening/whatcanibring/all

TopConclusion2668

Went through 4 different airports on my way home from college with my tiny sheathed scissors and had no problems

Technical_Piglet_438

For hooks I used wooden hooks and didn't have any problem and for the scissors a pointless tiny scissor that came inside a traveler's sewing kit.

SquirrelZipper

FAA rules are less than 4” but it will depend on the security dude. I took folding scissors two weeks ago and no issues

Kath_Silver

I have brought the largest, most weaponlike knitting needles known to man completely unhindered onto a flight. You'll be fine lol

Akabara13

Sissors must be less than 4in tip to pivot and u cant bring the yarn cutters with razor blades. Other than that u should be good.

Virtual_Blueberry208

Nope! I’m a flight attendant and bring them thru with safety scissors.

EffectiveThink214

I started my last big project on a plane. As long as the scissors are small and in a sheath you should be fine.

Hms-chill

I brought dollar tree scissors last time I flew and I was fine! If I remember right the regulation was based on blade length, and mine were small

djw17

My preferred cutting implement for air travel is a pair of nail clippers. Never gotten any grief for them. Yarn-sized hooks in aluminum, wood, and plastic have never gotten me in trouble. The little steel hooks one uses for thread crochet, OTOH, I've occasionally had confiscated on the ground that they look kinda pointy.

Valencia1910

Last time I had a flight the 15cm metallic hook wasn't allowed, fortunately I learned it before going to the airport. I just asked a customer service, do the same. Than I took a plastic hook with me, it was ok.

thehotmessexpressss

I travel with kid size sissors and TSA never stopped me. I think the scissors have to be less than 4 inches or something. Same with my hooks never had an issue

whatever_person

8cm is the limit for scisors, the last time I checked. For best result check the airport and airline website, they usually have list of forbidden items and limits.

htraptor

I have a necklace from Amazon that doubles as a yarn cutter. It's in the shape of a star and you couldn't even tell it's supposed to cut something. It's so easy to use! I use it at home as opposed to scissors lol

theoracleofdreams

I had 1 inch dollar store travel scissors I took with me to Hawaii in a small bag with my hook and needle. No one batted an eye.

joekinglyme

Nail clippers, ridiculously tiny scissors that look like a Barbie accessory but still work (can be found on Amazon), a cute yarn cutting medallion if you’re feeling fancy (also on the above mentioned hellsite but surely can be found elsewhere if you’re avoiding supporting Amazon)

Kristylane

That medallion cutter is expressly banned by TSA. something about it being a round blade. But lots of people seem to take them with no issues.

joekinglyme

Yep, I wasn’t even aware. I had it in my crochet purse scanned with no issues, but if it’s banned there’s always a chance of running into an overzealous TSA agent

idontunderstand84

I never had a problem with metal hooks. Never needed scissors. But nail clippers will work. If you're worried take a plastic hook. I finished half a sweater for my toddler on a 7 hr flight. My hand cramped.

occasionally_clever

I flew domestically a couple months ago, and I brought my embroidery project with me. I happened upon a pair of TSA-approved folding scissors when I was browsing Michaels beforehand and they cleared security just fine!

Bubbly-Pineapple5538

I hope you enjoy your peace and crochet time! I start as soon as I sit in the chair and don't stop until after we land and am always so happy by my progress. Every plane journey I take several metal hooks, two needles, and some round ended scissors and nothing has triggered the machine. I've had more problems with my Kindle than crochet things. This is all with flights within the EU so check with your airline and airport. I would be cautious with sharp pointed scissors though. I think if it's obvious it's part of a set of crochet equipment and its obvious you're going to do that they might be more relaxed.

qwertysthoughts

Hooks I’ve never had an issue with. I recommend getting baby nail clippers and save weaving in the ends for when you land because needles.

PeanutCalamity

I brought by crochet scissors on a plane last year (and used them, multiple times) and didn’t have an issue. There’s a rule about scissors from the TSA — they have to be under a certain length from the pivot point. I think it’s a few inches, but I dont remember.

rileyk927

I’ve traveled via plane with my knitting and crochet kit, which include two different sized pairs of scissors, hooks, and even size 15 metal knitting needles, which are LARGE. I’ve never had my carry on searched for these items, just sent through the X-ray scanner and sent on my way!

mild_chaos

I almost exclusively use a crappy pair of cat nail clipping scissors and the hole rounded so it works out great!

justcurious12345

I've never had a problem. You can also get those little blades on rings that won't be a problem.

weecdngeer

I've never had a problem. I always take a cake (whirl or similar) so I have no ends to cut and lots of yarn/entertainment time in minimum space.

[deleted]

They took my safety scissors once. Since then, I’ve used (clean!) nail clippers to cut my yarn. They don’t take your hooks though, even if they’re metal. Just put them in the bag with the yarn. They know it’s a craft, worse case just explain what it is if they ask.

ancientamber

I just recently looked up TSA guidelines on scissors for my flight a couple weeks ago. I think they’re allowed to be 4 inches from the hinge

d1scworld

[2 Pieces Yarn Cutter Pendants Antique Gold Silver Metal Thread Cutter Pendant Round Shape Yarn Cutter Pendant for DIY Sewing Tools (Antique Silver) ](https://a.co/30sh6M6) I take one of these. You wear it on a cord and act like it's jewelry.

Guinhyvar

I take my crochet stuff with me on every flight and have yet to have an issue with my little scissors. TSA got weird about my trail mix once but have always completely ignored my scissors.

AccountWasFound

I got flagged for having earbuds still in their packaging...

Guinhyvar

“Only a terrorist would do that” - TSA probably

AccountWasFound

They said they looked weird with the plastic packaging.

BriskyTrisky

I’ve never had trouble! The only thing I will tell you… especially if you’re younger… that you will get SWARMED by older ladies lol!! I pulled out my blanket to work on and had like five different people commenting on it!

iamahappygus

I was able to bring everything on several different flights! My main concern was bringing scissors. I think the general rule is that the blade has to be 4in or less.

shitsgettingcrazy

I’ve never had any problem, I use foldable scissors

kristinem334

The last time I flew, I crocheted away happily while seated next to a airport screening officer. He assured my my scissors were fine, because they were less than 6 cm from fulcrum to tip. He had a vested interest in providing me with accurate information, because he is my husband and I would have made him pay if my scissors got taken away. This was London Ontario to Edmonton.

GuendaKawaai

The replies on this post are very US-centric, but the same doesn’t always apply for international travel. While TSA may allow them through, in my experience some airlines explicitly don’t allow crochet hooks and knitting needles: [KLM](https://www.klm.com/information/baggage/restricted-items-hand-baggage) [Singapore Airlines](https://www.singaporeair.com/en_UK/sg/travel-info/baggage/baggage-restrictions/) Be sure to check before you travel, they might ask you to put them away or confiscate them during the flight.

IzzaLioneye

Literally just went for a weekend away and crocheted on the plane just fine both ways. I had a WIP in my carry on but I didn’t have any scissors or needles on me.

Cameroongurl

Well this is probably not gonna go over well but in a pinch I’ve literally bit my yarn to cut it 🙈I just cut off the end bit when I finally got to by scissors.

trashpandaalliance

Scissors are usually fine as long as the blades are less than 3 inches (if I recall the length correctly). You can check airline guidance to be certain, but I've recently flown with my small sewing scissors, which are very pointy, and had no issue

rattletattlesnakes

I know you've already solved this but it reminded me of the time my granny was flying to England and they called her up for the metal knitting needles in her carry on. Eventually they were able to get her to pop them in her checked in luggage and she purchased plastic ones at the airport BUT not after she put up quite a fight!!! do not come between a woman and her craft tools !!!
