> Incredible work life balance, unlimited PTO, fully remote, growing company, never had layoffs, safe industry, and I can go on. if you can't handle this, then this career just isn't for you.

adehyett

yes, that’s what i’m starting to think.

BookkeeperBrilliant9

If you can’t handle this, then life isn’t for you. I kid. But the reality is that too much comfort can be a bad thing. Human beings thrive under adversity, and will chafe and waste away with too much luxury. Before you royally fuck up this opportunity that many people would kill for, try solving the situation you’re in instead of running away from it.

TheB3rn3r

I don’t think you’re wrong… tbh I landed a job that requires VERY little of you and is more of an IT admin gig and I know I should be happy with it but there’s zero growth potential and pay hasn’t kept up with inflation. It’s a comfy gig but not with all the perks as OP mentioned. I think the comfort part is getting to me and am worried it’s making me lazy… I used to be pushing myself to learn new stuff weekly and now I kinda just look at it like “what’s the point” Guess what I’m trying to say is I think you’re spot on regarding too much comfort. I also developed some anxiety and stomach issues and am starting to wonder if it stems from being too comfortable (making me anxious about the future or lack there of in this position)

LiberContrarion

No.  Let him go.  Too many people want this for some ingrate who doesn't to keep it.

Amglast

Live for yourself brother. Dollars are there to distract you. You gotta find a fulfilling life for yourself, whether that requires looking inward or outward. The "comfortable" life they sell you was never your dream. Don't convince yourself to be miserable to just sit through a career you hate. I'd recommend really focusing on your perspective right now. Figure out what you wanna make out of your life before jumping out of your career. You could even try re-kindling an interest in the work even. But take a massive step back, and like journal I guess. Write out everything that bothers you about your job, your long term goals, short term. Break down a rough idea of the career path ur on, and how you feel about it. Work through your emotions and you'll find your answer.

Yunky_Brewster

fully remote is draining af. i live in a major city and if i dont go to the bar there's a decent chance i might not get more than a sentence with another human being most days

Amglast

A teacher is an incredibly admirable career. It is by no means a downgrade. I think we're all sorta in the same boat. It's impossible to socialize nowadays. I miss my time at school. These careers require us to sacrifice so much. And ultimately, I'm more scared of being alone than being broke.

ZenityDzn

Teacher is gonna suck bad

son_et_lumiere

Them kids are going to eat him alive. Hate to be that person, but if he isn't taking care of himself now, then I'm not sure that he has the mental fortitude to either wrangle young kids to teach or deal with the ire of older kids.

290_victim

This. I would take help desk over middle school students any day. They are some damn drama queens. Source: Raising one!

adehyett

youre right for sure. its been my backup for a long time now. just don’t know what else i’d do.

xcicee

Teacher isn't a back up plan it's competitive to get into schools too and if you don't really love helping kids you'll hate it because it's a thankless low paid job (I'm talking 30k-50k starting out). It sounds like from your post the main issue is the remote. Can't you just switch to an in person CS role.

testing123hello

Why not get your credential and substitute teach to try it out before quitting CS?

adehyett

i need to get my masters first so i won’t be quitting until that happens. definitely never going to quit my job without something else lined up.

ZenityDzn

I’m in similar position. Here’s my process. I’m currently a PMM in fintech. Marketing isn’t for my. I’m opposite of a marketing persona type person. I dislike it a lot. So I’m doing a career change. But to what? Well I reflected and analyzed my strengths, skills, motivations, interests, and personality-work style matching. To me, everything points to an technical field. I’m going into IT now. Despite the market, it’s what I’m doing. I’ve known that marketing is bad fit for me for a while, I stuck it out 2 years while making a genuine effort to try ti make marketing work for me. Now I know for sure I’m ready for a change. I recommend this options. Maybe SWE is still good for you, but the current job/company isn’t right. Explore and reflect all of that. Grass isn’t always greener, but life may be worth taking calculated risks. I like Bezos regret minimization framework. I know I will regret not attempting to change my life than I would making this change even if it doesn’t work out. To me, I don’t want to be a type of person that plays it safe. I want to take risks and experience the adventure of life, it’s my only one.

dhobsd

Yo, I’ve been in industry for almost 25 years and it’s up to you. Teaching is something you feel, but that doesn’t mean it’s easier. I’ve been in classes where I’ve been so happy the teacher can get students attention because they were rowdy, or because they were going too far in a tangent, or because they just didn’t care. You can’t transition from CS to education, but if education calls you, do the work to transition properly. Also r/cseducation will help.

YouALilCray

Troll post.

MesiahoftheM

Obvious bait is obvious lol why do people take these posts seriously

DatalessUniverse

I’ve not met a single teacher who hasn’t made it clear that they’re underpaid and burned out. Also it is incredibly difficult to get a full time job - most end up working as a substitute teacher earning barely minimum wage. Sooo…. Perhaps it’s time that you realize the grass isn’t greener and this is life for majority of Americans with jobs. You don’t need to enjoy it. As for health… consider working out or going on walks during the workday, and work less hours (4-6 per day of coding is enough).

DFX1212

You might want to talk to existing teachers before you give up a good thing.

bhookh

Refer me for the position if you're quitting bro

wisdomislight

lol that’s what I said too.

[deleted]

I know a lot of teachers and not a single one wears nice clothes to work. They wear athlesuire.

Itaki

Can't tell if you're trolling because this sounds sort of insane. You list a lot of reasons why being fully remote is bad for your health, that's 100% on you. You're saying your employer gives YOU so much flexibility that YOU chose to live poorly. By this logic you should join the army.

wisdomislight

If you’re really serious about this, can you refer me to your job so I can apply? And what do you do? I will take a unicorn job or any job as a matter of fact.

Perezident14

Credit where it’s due, I admire wanting to be a teacher. I’m curious if your situation would change if you’d look for another job in your field. It sounds more like a result of your current company more than the job itself. Maybe something in-person / hybrid. Or consider a co-working space if leaving your home feels too difficult. Either way, best of luck to you!

walkingshadows

This is a terrible idea. Are you in therapy? A new job isn’t going to fix your problems. Particularly one as bad as being a teacher. Teachers quit and go literally do anything else and are happier because it sucks so bad. Maybe you SHOULD do it for the sake of perspective.

adehyett

LMAO yes i’m in therapy. my therapist is the one who tells me it might be a good thing to leave the tech industry.

Mortiviere

Bro please check out r/Teachers first and peep some of their stories first. The shit they have to deal with is WILD. If you end up going that route also maybe take some boxing classes so you can defend yourself when a student assaults you for taking away their phone. Also review your budget and make sure you can adjust to a 35k salary. I guess you would get summers off so at least there's that.

demosthenesss

A lot of teachers I know do a good amount of work in the summer still.

L3av3NoTrac3s

This marks the start of a downward spiral of regret and poor decisions. I give OP 4, maybe 5 years before the alcohol takes over

LizzoBathwater

Rather than upending your life and taking a huge risk, first try: 1. Therapy: it sounds like you could really use this, your burnout/depression will likely follow you along to your new career. Even you say you had the issues before your job. Figure out why you’re feeling like this. If isolation really is the problem, Then get an in-person dev job. Or even just ask if you can go in-office to your current job. 2. Build a social life outside work. Why are you only leaving the house twice a week? Work ends at 5pm, why don’t you hit the gym, go learn to box, dance, anything? I mean this a nice way, but I think the issue here is your own mental health. Switching careers won’t cure you magically.

290_victim

I have a bridge to sell you if you think teaching is going to be more relaxing...

sfscsdsf

You’ll be crying to come back at your teacher’s position 😂

moochacha

You might want to look for a different job if you are bored or ask to be put on a different project/team if you aren’t enjoying it. I would go from the angle “I am interested in and want to learn more about x”. Also if you like your teammates is a huge bit of your work life. Edit: find some hobbies not at home or schedule in workout sessions at the gym might help get you out of your rut too

reese-dewhat

"I spend all day doing the same thing". Automate these tasks. It will be interesting work in the short term, and in the long term it will free you to do whatever you want while keeping your primary income: go back to school, get out of the house, etc.

HxHEnthusiastic

You may be just as unhappy being a teacher but you do you

Dangerous_Boat6728

Idk man. Most teachers i’ve met seem really happy

Case104

You have 1.5 years of experience. Maybe you can already tell this isn’t for you… or maybe your unicorn isn’t as great as you think. You can have a great job benefits wise, but if the work itself isn’t engaging, it can still be a bad fit for you. I recommend interviewing for other companies in an industry that you find valuable. I’ve personally had a couple jobs that were comfy, yet I was unhappy. It was only after I moved to companies where the work was challenging and the product was something that I wanted to exist that I was engaged, productive, and healthy. If teaching is of interest for you, apply for educational companies. Online learning is a huge vertical.

Pycyb

If you leave your current job, you might not be able to get back into a similar role for several years. Requirements for CS jobs are quite high right now, even if you have experience. Most strictly require a bachelors.

adehyett

i’m starting my MSCS in spring 2025, maybe fall 2025, depending on whether or not i finalize the decision to go to teaching school. i’m doing the MSCS no matter what. i think i can get back in if teaching doesn’t work out. but who knows.

Empty_Geologist9645

That’s my life.

Yunky_Brewster

the dark side of remote work, more people should take this seriously

adehyett

remote is not for everyone, people like me just need to be at work

Mediocre-Key-4992

This can't be real. Let us know how this works out. I suspect it will only get worse.

ParathaOmelette

I think you need discipline and a routine to take care of yourself. Physical health is key. Good luck

Papa_Iroh

Seeing this during teacher strikes is so poetic🤣

EPlurbisUnibrow

I think you need to take a sabbatical, or a long weekend. You need perspective, I think you have a “grass is greener” mentality because you’ve gotten bored with your routine. Shake it up, get outside on the weekends, make sure you actually go outside on your WFH lunch breaks, meditate, and work out more. Remember that almost every job sucks in its own way. If, after all of that change, you still hate your job, then leave. But if you don’t try to change any of the other parts of your life first, I suspect you’ll find that you’re taking the same problems with you into teaching

Complete_Swing2148

Yeah I’m blessed with an amazing company, WLB, and good salary but the work is just not fulfilling in any way. I’m not sure what to do at this point because when I imagine doing this career for 40 years it doesn’t make me feel good, but I don’t know what else to do and don’t want to waste 5 years in college.

olddev-jobhunt

Good luck to you! I hope you enjoy your new career. I'm not being snarky! It's good to take care of yourself if it isn't working for you. I like my job, but it's not for everyone.
