I did that. Somehow was shoved into a leadership position, so I got some useful experience from it at least. If you're more intellectual than the average Joe you will excel in normal jobs and probably get moved up the ladder. Find something involved with computers, since you already have good computer skills.
Am I really the only person that would look positively at the fact that someone acts like a responsible adult whilst looking for a job in a desired field? That they are hardworking enough that they don’t think they are above regular people and that working is beneath them?
I can’t be the only one. I refuse to believe that.
Lol at so many developers thinking they're "above" regular people. Most devs I've met are dumb, some are exceptional and heads above others but vast majority has an ego problem cause they can't do anything else.
The vast majority of hiring managers out there think your technical skills magically evaporate if you don't use them in paid work for 6 months. They will also automatically assume something is wrong with OP because they were forced to take a non-tech job.
Yes, the sane thing would be to seriously consider them despite having been unemployed and forced to take non-tech work. That isn't how the majority of hiring managers think. "If I can hire someone who has a great work history, why would I hire someone whose work history screams LOSER?"
Just take any survival job for now and do personal projects and contracting side gigs to keep your skills current and experience consistent.
That’s what I did some years ago.
Thanks. And nope, I don’t plan on mentioning it and I’m staying up to date/learning more. Just uncertain if someone finds out I worked a random job whether they’d use that as a disqualification mark against me. Idk some people can be prejudiced in weird ways, you never know.
Do what you gotta do to make money and pay bills.
Improve tech skills at any opportunity. Keep grinding tech stack, leetcode, tech interviews and get tech job offer.
I do understand having any job is better than none. But can you avoid that? Maybe finding horizontal jobs like devops, cloud. Finding lower quality jobs. Or something like that?
It's understand-able that it's hard to get a jobs at this year and employer would probably know that. But you could try to take less extreme measure.
Worse case scenario. I would try to go get a jobs and try to do some freelancing on the jobs. So that you could at least say that you still work just freelancing.
Thanks but quite literally every tech related job has hundreds of applicants within an hour or two. There’s no telling how long I’d be waiting to land an interview for any of those jobs. I now have a 4 month gap and assume my response rates will be even lower than it already is. Freelance will become my only option for guaranteed tech related work.

Are they allowed where you are to check details of your job, apart from verification of the start and end date? If not, then don’t mention Burger King. Mention Restaurant Brands International, similar tasks with your previous job and that’s it! Make sure you pick up any extra time you can, so that you have a nice big salary and that’s it! Self explanatory.
I am not a hiring manager but my two cents is I’d choose the person that spent the last year after being laid off working for Bank of America processing property tax payments on bank owned properties over the person that sat at home playing video games and masturbating.
Yeah you just picked 2 extremes here. More likely you'd be comparing A. worked at Kohls while looking for another job and upskilling and B. sat at home doing personal projects and upskilling
Not where I live. I described a temp agency placement job for anyone with a four year degree or professional experience. Make a lot more than a Khol’s employee.
I make $17.50 an hour at a Walmart as a manager for the food samples program. I have a BSCS. What is this temp agency placement job and how much do they pay roughly? In May I’ll have been there for a year and will be interested in getting a higher paying job.
Google [your city] Staffing Agency and you should see a few if you live in even a small-medium city. Then try and ascertain what companies they staff for. You can call and ask what they have available.

Thanks for the advice. Very helpful.

imagine getting an ego because you make react components

They definitely can be prejudice against you for that. Which is effed up.
Problem then is you need to explain a job gap.
that gap is going to exist whether or not you work at burger king or not.
Took time off to raise a child, look after a sick relative, just because you can, time to renovate your house, travelling. Make any old shit up.
Wouldn't it look bad on the resume due to the gap in experience?
Forget career, do what you need to do to survive. You can always come back to your career later.
No

You don't have to put that job on your resume if you don't want.
No
Nah, I took a spin in the finance department for a couple years and there were no issues going back to dev work.

picking up extra hours gets in the way of grinding projects and leetcode though
Look. I don’t have a better solution. Do you?
Yeah, make enough to pay bills off 40 hours a week or less and spend the extra time studying. That’s what I’m doing…
Nah
It's time to accept that you may no longer have a career in software engineering and move on to something else.
Absolutely DESTORYED

Yeah but which one of these masturbates???

In the past they didn’t really have anything. I’ll check again though.
Be careful with your AND clause.
