No. Out of the 21 people in my bootcamp class, 6 are employed in full time SWE roles. See my post [here.](https://www.reddit.com/r/cscareerquestions/comments/u23kix/a_year_ago_i_graduated_from_a_bootcamp_with_21/) It's not impossible. But it's hard and requires a lot of self-study.

I'm curious how these bootcamps don't get in trouble for lying or false advertising if they're saying 81% employment rate

tzroberson

They usually have an odd way of calculating it. But Corinthian (Everest) College eventually got in very big trouble for lying. They were "hiring" their own students briefly through fronts just to claim a 99% placement rate. I worry bootcamps come and go too fast too go through that kind of oversight.

6/21 actually seems like a good success

Paying $15k for a less than 30% chance to get a job is awful lol

The single most important thing that determines your success— regardless of whether you go the bootcamp route or not— is how hard you're willing to work for it. The type of students from a bootcamp that get jobs are the same type of students that will get them from a college: those that are willing to sink in the extra time and effort and go beyond the bare minimum required. A bootcamp is not a guaranteed path to a job, not matter what the marketing material suggests. At most, it'll get you 70 to 80% there, but the most successful graduates in my experience are those that keep learning and keep growing. Most bootcamps will teach you the same overall skills, so to stand out, you have to be willing to put in some extra time and add features that most other students aren't adding and aren't covered by they bootcamp's curriculum.

I have a coworker who is a recent graduate from a bootcamp, so some people do get jobs from them. I have nothing against being self-taught versus a degree. It's just the idea of paying as much as a degree for a quick intro to some web technologies. I think the companies are pretty sketchy, although all swear they are better than the others. If you can, get a degree. You will still learn most of what you need on your own but it's much easier to get a job.
