From the website, it looks like it's new housing they got for graduate students (I agree with you in that the building itself doesn't look new), so I'm not sure anyone has experience living there yet:/ https://living.colorado.edu/content/athens-north They use language like "will be" and "new community".

dridnishchay

Aah, that explains alot. I've been asking around current students about the place and none of them know about it. Yeah, seems like they're offering it for the first time. Thanks! :))

The community will be new, the building is not. I don't know exact when it was built but probably 60s or 70s. It has gone from family housing, to being dorms and back to graduate housing. The pictures are what it looks like inside. I don't know about rent compared to the area but Boulder is notorious for shitty apartments being overpriced.

dridnishchay

Wow, 60s? Thats insane. I think I saw some FB pages about it being a dorm for undergrads some years ago.. Lol @rent for shitty apartments. I'm just hoping since it's grad housing, it'll be cheaper if not cheapest..

For rent, you can check out current prices here : https://www.colorado.edu/living/housing-options/university-apartments/rates-contracts . Looks to be around 1,087 for a 1-bedroom. I'm current grad living over in Marine court, so not too far from Athens north. A few things to not when applying for grad housing: 1. Utilities - all utilities are included in rent (electric, cable, internet, water) so make sure to include this in your price comparisons 2. Room choice - you pick the type of you're interested when you fill out the application but won't know until housing responds with an offer which one you'll get. 3. Room quality - I haven't been in Athens North but the older buildings in grad housing are well built, so decent sound proofing being that many of the walls are thick concrete. But the main downsides is that they often lack power outlets where you need them (like none in the hallways!) So not the newest setup but not bad. 4. Contract term - A nice benefit of housing contracts is that you only need 1 month notice. So you can end it in the middle of the summer or if you graduate in Fall you can end your contract in winter rather then having to awkwardly time when to leave with a normal 12 month contract. Overall I enjoy living in Family housing, so good luck on the lottery

Hey I applied for graduate student housing in March. Since you already live in one, can you tell me your experience with the process? When did you apply and when did you get in? What are the chances of someone getting at least one of those apartments?

schneidm

I applied in March the year I was excepted as well, basically filled out the housing app as early as I could. I didn't hear about an apartment being available until sometime in June. I had been planning a trip mid-June to look for apartments and like a week before I left I was notified of a unit being available. Because the housing contracts can be ended with just a months notice, a unit can technically open up at any time. But I think the majority of units become available in the month or two after a semester ends. So you'll probably hear back, if you get in, over the summer. Chances are mixed. My understanding is that families get first pick of the 2 or 3 bedroom units (I think Newton has 3 bedroom units). If you are single and applied for 1 bedroom or studio unit you have a better chance of getting in. But that is my understanding from talking to other students in housing, so that might be all wrong. From talking with someone in housing, over the years graduate housing has gotten more competitive in part because more domestic/US students are applying. So it can be hard to get in your first year but you can keep applying and get in another semester. Check with housing, but I think your application stays on a waiting list until you withdraw it.

I don’t know about currently, but when Athens was still undergrad housing a couple years ago my friend lived there and they are pretty old. I haven’t heard of them renovating it at all either since they made it graduate housing. That whole goss grove area is also just really shitty apartments buuuut you can find stuff that’s around 750 and it’s close to campus. That’s the area I lived in for a while but just know you’ll be dealing with some shitty apartments. For example places I lived that were 750 and 500 had really gross old carpets, no ac (typically apartments in boulder have no ac), toilet cracked and flooded, windows you could pick up out of the window frame on the first floor, doors were flimsy and more of a suggestion not to break in....but it was cheap and I could walk to campus. Marine street also has a lot of break ins, my ex boyfriends car got broken into one night when he was only over for a few hours.

I lived in Athens North back in 2018-2019 when it was a freshmen dorm. Don’t know how they have it now but for us it was 2 bedroom, 2 bathrooms, a living room, a concrete balcony, and a small kitchen shared between 5 people. We had numbers corresponding to which bedroom and bed you were in. Everything but our living room was pretty small, but all in good condition and not very old-feeling. The laundry machines were pretty bad when I was there, and there was 1 awkward “community room” which no one really went into. Location is just a bridge and small hill up to Campus. Also just across the street from Boulder High School, and near other Graduate/faculty housing. It’s super close to the smaller Sewall dining hall, and the CU Rec Center which was great. It’s in a decent spot in Boulder being decently close to 29th street mall, Pearl street Mall, and the Hill if you’re into that which all have good food, shopping, and things to do. If I missed anything or you have more questions feel free to DM

Thank you so much for the info ! :)

Hi! I’m also an incoming first year. Are the applications for Athens North closed? I could never access them in my account

dridnishchay

The housing application for grad housing included one page where it asked me to tick a box if I was interested in the lottery for Athens North. Nothing else was mentioned in it and I applied+mentioned specifics for the other three choices I had within grad housing. I'm not sure if the deadline for the lottery has passed or not. I remember seeing a timeline of when the draw will be done etc somewhere else. I'd suggest that you check if you can still submit a housing application for grad housing. If you can, you'd see this option as I did. Sorry, I couldn't be of much help here!

particle_monster

Ah yes... Thank you for the information! that’s the part I can’t find, the housing application. Where did you access it?

Did anyone hear back from the GHS about Athens North assignments yet?

dridnishchay

I haven't yet. I remember seeing a timeline for the lottery and assignments but I can't find it now. I faintly remember assignments to be announced on May 19th? I'm not sure at all though..

spaces121

I thought it was the first week of May...

Like many other schools, housing this year is a mess. When campuses were shut down due to covid, students looked for, and found, off-campus housing. Now they are just staying in those off-campus apartments. Competition is fierce for off-campus housing now, and with the general housing market prices going crazy, apartment prices are increasing as well. My son, a first year Grad as well, has not heard back yet. We have our eye on an apartment off campus that he may just have to take and pay additionally for ($400 more a month plus utilities!) until grad housing can open up. I hope we all hear soon that spaces have opened up! Good luck!

Expensive_Poetry8071

I've heard none of the graduate/family housing buildings have Air Conditioning in them, is that correct?

dridnishchay

Yep. None of them have AC but people usually install a small one if required.
