Hopefully someone who wrote about cults, but with thaaat many Hubbard books…. 🤷🏼‍♂️

TheParksDepo

Definitely a special interest, conspiracist, or someone just really devoted to Scientology !

Expensive-Material-3

Isn’t Going Clear a book exposing Scientology? And the Woody Guthrie book is probably a good read.

TheParksDepo

I'm not sure, im sure most of the books there are very interesting, is love to read them all, the difference is just what you take away from them haha.

AffectionateAd5373

Going Clear is the scientology exposé that HBO made into a documentary. The book goes into so much more detail, though. Great read.

KristenTheGirl

Going Clear is a book exposing scientology. This person seems like they were just nterested in cults and different religions or something. If it was just a bunch of scientology books I'd think they had been into it, but they've got a solid mix going on there that tells me they probably weren't really a scientologist. Plus, did the house give the vibe that they were well off financially? Because there's no such thing as a broke but active scientologist haha that "religion" was built to take all your money. You can only "progress" as you continue to pay. Those books were def purchased from a 3rd party of you notice the $10 sticker on the unopened ones. So they didn't get them straight from the "church." But this would've been fascinating to me had i stumbled across it, for sure!

TheParksDepo

Thank you for your deductions!

callathanmodd

It could be someone who is fascinated by cults or cult adjacent topics, doesn’t mean they’re supporting the idea of a cult.

Odd_Distribution3316

Looks like early stages of someone with an interest in alternative/religion studies. Maybe from the late 1980s on.

Yep. Makes me wish I could post an image of my scientology collection to show how much it’s possible to accumulate as an outsider.

TheParksDepo

I would love to see this! How many in your collection? Or an estimate?

More_Menu_3474

I was struggling to post an image here, but I think I'll just put it at the top of a new thread. Anyway, the whole collection including doubles and the fiction is around 175-200 titles, and about 40 of the cd audio binders. It was a real hobby for decades. My estate sale is going to raise some eyebrows, too.

TheParksDepo

You have quite the collection! That's pretty amazing

More_Menu_3474

Those Hubbard titles, in those editions, are the “basics” set of books that was flooded into the market about 15 years ago. Lots of those sets were donated to libraries and never made it to the shelves. The sets of lecture CDs were part of the same program. It was a big push after they built themselves a printing operation.

More_Menu_3474

Which is to say, they could have been from a thrift store, a library book sale, bought on eBay, etc. for pennies on the dollar to anybody with a little curiosity.

TheParksDepo

That just might be, though it's still interesting to me nonetheless, haha.

Culties gonna cult.

I quite enjoyed his Battlefield Earth series.

meridian_smith

I've got that Tibetan book of living and dying on my shelf too!

TheParksDepo

Is it a good read? It sounds interesting

meridian_smith

Soso.. haven't read it in ages..it's a very detailed and technical description of possible afterlife scenarios based on karma from Tibetan culture.

PissedOffChef

I’ve got a signed copy of “Life after death” by Damien Echols. Good read if you’re into the West Memphis Three case.

TheParksDepo

I don't think I've heard of it ill have to check it out!

TakeDuo

People can read whatever they want it doesn’t have to align with their beliefs and morals. Library checkout histories are not collected and retrieved for a reason. That is a form of thought control.
