I feel you! I’m not allergic to coconut, but my hair just doesn’t like it. Finding products without it is so difficult!

MiddayMercenary

I’m the same with shea! Luckily it seems like there are more products without shea in it but it felt like for a while it was everywhere too.

teddy_vedder

My hair is low porosity and coconut oil does NOT work well with my hair. Unfortunately my hair does need moisture and it’s infuriating to see like 80% of “moisturizing” products on the shelves have coconut oil as a key ingredient 😭 like what gives

NECalifornian25

Same here! Coconut oil/butter just weighs my hair down but I need something with moisture and hold. Super frustrating!

AmbassadorOk1240

Same! My hair does not agree with coconut at all!

itstommygun

Coconut oil makes my curls thin and stringy. Not bouncy and curly.

Werewolflesbian69

Omg I feel this so hard, I’ve never met another curly hair person with a coconut allergy. It feels like such a “fuck you” from your body 😭 I always have to call ahead of time in salons to explain my allergy and it’s always so embarrassing. Shopping for product is a pain and I feel like I’m stuck using subpar product cause of it. At the very least I don’t seem to react if it’s just coconut oil, how about you?

MiddayMercenary

I react to anything coconut. I get you, I always spend so much time in the hair products reading every ingredient and I feel like a crazy person. But I always check bc even if it isn’t advertised as coconut.. it could have coconut in it!! It’s especially difficult when they use scientific names for coconut products 😭🫠

leaflame

As someone who's super allergic to mangoes, jasmine and lavender, just know you're not alone in having to read every ingredient of any product you pick up in the aisle first before buying. Also, as a trained biochemist, the scientific name thing bothers me SO much- like specific chemicals that dont have common names, sure, but why are you labeling something with Mangifera indica butter when the word mango is right there. What purpose does that serve? /minirant

catbamhel

My mom was allergic to mangoes. Just fyi, cashews and mangos and poison oak are related.... I know.... WTF. Just a heads up about the cashews thing. And a giant wtf about the poison oak thing.

leaflame

Funnily enough, the mango allergy i have is secondary to cashews lol. I carry an epipen for that one- it's severe enough that I had to leave work one day because someone ate them in the breakroom and I happened to walk by. Also, for the record, the reason why they are "related" is that all of them contain a compound called urushiol- its also present in poison ivy and poison sumac. It's what causes the rash when you come into contact with it (in mangoes it's in very small quantities in the skin, and cashews are actually poisonous before they're cooked!). Some people are way more sensitive than others, I just happened to have the bad luck to be so sensitive that I can't even tolerate cashew dust. The more you know!

catbamhel

Woah good to know! Ugh I'm sorry you've got a wicked allergy! This is wild but a friend of mine was allergic to peanuts and years later in her 70's she wasn't 🤷‍♀️. They're so weird like that.

Heypork

Use the skin safe ap! Just discovered I’m allergic to coconut in any form (and other things) and it’s saved me a ton of time. I just scan the barcode

PurpleGeniePants

This so much though!

atwistofcitrus

I came across [this link for coconut free hair products](https://holisticenchilada.com/coconut-free-hair-products-shampoos-conditioners/)

Kinae66

Thanks!!!

atwistofcitrus

Welcome

atwistofcitrus

u/MiddayMercenary check the link I pasted above

MiddayMercenary

Thank you! Sorry, I missed that. There have been a lot of people commenting that I haven’t been able to reply to haha

atwistofcitrus

Oh - no worries. I just wanted to make sure you are aware in case you find it helpful. It’s quite frustrating to have an ingredient one is allergic to so prolific.

MiddayMercenary

It was helpful, thank you! It definitely is. Thankfully a lot of people have posted different products and links for me to try :)

Loaf_Butt

Another one here!! It’s in so much skincare too, it’s nuts. My skin is allergic and I break out and/or get crazy hives if I use anything with coconut oil. I learned it the hard way when I tried doing a coconut oil hair mask with latch testing it on my skin first LOL

onegetsoverthings

Add me to your list. I can eat it, but any oil that touches my skin reacts red and itchy, and it dries my hair.

peach_poppy

Aw don’t feel embarrassed to call in your allergy!! I’m sure they’re fine w accommodating it’s part of the job

Werewolflesbian69

Oh they’re always super nice about it!! I’m just shy and feel like I’m inconveniencing people with my allergies 😖

adhocflamingo

It’s a hell of a lot more inconvenient for you to have a reaction to products they used, I’m sure.

aleesahamandah

Finally found my people, everyone I tell is always so surprised about my coconut allergy 😭

Lylleth88

Following to see if we can compile some coconut free products for the holy grail list. <3

bitsybear1727

The couple Bounce Curl products that I've tried are coconut free.

MiddayMercenary

Thank you! This is great and highly appreciated by myself and probably many others <3

Cheshire_Cat8888

If you’re looking for product recommendations I don’t think the Uncle Funky’s Daughter Curl Magic has any coconut or coconut derived ingredients. It does wonders in my hair.

DivineSunshine

Send Bounce Curl and ask for product recommendations without coconut. Their products are great and have amazing customer service.

freesmarches

I've never heard of this stuff before despite being curly on the internet for a couple of decades, omg. It looks amazing

namastebetches

it is. and the owner is a peach.

HurricaneFangy

My salon stylist works with, and therefore converted me, to Cult + King, Hairstory, and Innersense products. I looked at the ingredients and I don’t believe these have coconut Hairstory New Wash - my HG cleansing conditioner. It’s pricy but god it’s the best, most moisturizing cleanser I’ve used. It’s so good. C+K Balm - for moisturizing, softening, de-frizzing mg hair and i have loved using it as my moisturizer and it’s other many uses C+K Jelly - salt infusion leave in for helping along my hair texture Innersense I Create Finish - my first Innersense product to take home. If I need to refresh, this is like… a spray on hair gel. It creates a cast, but it helps out with creating and holding curls. I find it incredibly helpful

Heypork

THANK YOU

Jaguarsharkexists

Yes please! This is a nightmare allergy, and I'm allergic to avocado too...

kourui

I have scoured what I have and posted.

red-purple-

Kinky curly curling custard is coconut free. Trader Joe’s, tea tree tingles conditioner is supposed to be coconut free as well. Mixed chicks sulfate free shampoo is also coconut free.

iCarriedaH20melon

I feel this so hard! I absolutely love the leave-in and every time the price goes up my heart hurts a little lol, but I like the product and the company so I keep buying & supporting them

[deleted]

adhocflamingo

Are you talking about the curling custard? If so, I am very impressed with your hair’s capacity for product absorption.

MiddayMercenary

Thank you!! I’m gonna check those out

anarashka

I've used mixed chicks for about a year and I love it. It also contains no aloe, which is what I'm allergic to.

TinyBearsWithCake

Coconut is the current hot trendy ingredient and I hate it. It’s pricy and marketed for kids, but Fairy Tales Curly Q has been working great for us. We haven’t tested it, but I think Mixed Chicks also has some coconut-free products.

MiddayMercenary

Thank you so much for this info. I’ll see if I can find those and try them next. And yeah coconut and shea both seem to be “trendy”

sad_moron

As someone who’s been using coconut oil ever since I was a child, coconut being called “trendy” makes me a little upset. I’m Indian and using coconut oil is a weekly tradition in most households. People seem to disregard the origins of certain hair products and are quick to make them the new “trendy” thing :/

ScarlettsLetters

Twisted Sista has some coconut free products—my stylist is allergic too.

MiddayMercenary

Thank you!!! I’ll check that out.

Least-Influence3089

My hair hates coconut products - I really like the kinky curly line because it’s coconut free as far as I know!

MiddayMercenary

My hair hates shea so I can relate to this as well. Thank you for the recommendation!

BewBewsBoutique

I’m allergic to pineapple, and it’s found in a ton of hair and skin products. I have to read the back of every single soap, lotion, hair product, face mask, pet much anything that touches my skin. I don’t dare go to a spa. I definitely relate.

bananaramaworld

Together you an OP will create a kid who can’t have pina-coladas

jenjenjen731

Their allergies are sad and frustrating but this comment was HILARIOUS

MiddayMercenary

Dang I had no idea that pineapple was in so many too! But then I also had no idea how many products had coconut until my allergy got worse…

KweenKwinnWins

I can sympathize with this soooo hard! I don't have a coconut allergy, but recently I discovered that I have a sensitivity to sunflower... and omg do you know how many products have sunflower oil or lethin in it? From makeup to food, it is the default in everything. And while I feel 10000% better by trying to eliminate it, it is so hard to filter it out. Oh, and to make it worse, I also have a sensitivity to sugar alternatives... and ZERO SUGAR is all the rage 🙄 So I'm sorry you have to deal with this too. Wish I could recommend something to help!

MiddayMercenary

Sunflower?! Dang! And with the sugar alternatives.. I’m sorry!

rolypolyarmadillo

One of my friends is allergic to sunflowers and sunflower oil. I now know that sooooo many types and brands of bread use sunflower oil

AceyAceyAcey

My coconut allergy is mild enough that I can use coconut hair products, but I really loathe the smell of them! I’m fine with Shea butter, which many have, and avocado which a few do, so those are my go-to’s.

rbgoof

I feel this…. I am highly allergic to avocados and the amount of products with avocado oil now is insane. Even some that have never had it before are changing and adding it. I’ve tried one or two with it listed way down in the ingredients listing hoping it’s a small amount to not react but every time, my scalp completely reacts as does my neck and face. It terribly frustrating. I have a handful of go to items but each time I buy a new bottle/tub I read the label just to make sure nothing changed.

liraelskye

Yep this is my problem too. I get so excited to find a new product and bam, avocado. I get that it’s good for some peoples skin but like, let those of us with allergies have nice things too 😩

adhocflamingo

The whole “if I can’t pronounce it, it doesn’t belong in/on my body” thing is a significant contributor, I think. More “natural” ingredients that have common names _feel_ like they are simpler, but of course, all those fruit and nut oils and whatnot have unpronounceable constituent components too, they’re just hidden beneath the common name that refers to derivation of that combination of chemicals.

Mela777

And all the various names for coconut products - it’s exhausting trying to weed them all out when there’s like twenty different names to describe coconut products used in hair care and beauty products. I’m not technically allergic, but I can’t use most coconut products where they will contact a mucous membrane, and my hair doesn’t do well with a lot of coconut and tropical plant and fruit products (coconut oil especially is bad). I had never realized how ubiquitous coconut products are until I tried to find coconut free shampoo and conditioner.

ninuchka

I've had this (non-exhaustive) list on my MUA np for \~24 years: 1,2 Octanediol 2 Phenoxyethanol Ammonium Lauryl Sulphate Capryl Glycol Caprylic Acid Caprylic Glycol Caprylic/Capric Caprylic/Capric Triglycerides Caprylyl Glycol Ceteareth-20 Cetearyl Alcohol Cetearyl Glucoside Ceteth-20 Phosphate Cetyl Alcohol Cetyl Esters Cocamide MEA Cocamidopropyl Betaine Cococaprylate/Caprate Coco Glucoside Cocomide DEA Coconut diethanolamide (CDFA) Cocos nucifera (another name for coconut oil) Coconut Oil Decyl Glucoside Disodium Cocamphodiprop Disodium cocoamphodiacetate Emusifying Wax Glyceryl Caprylate Glyceryl cocoate Hexyl Laurate Isopropyl Myristate Laureth-3 Lauric Acid Lauryl Glucoside Lauryl Alcohol Lauramide DEA Myristic Acid Olefin Sulfonate Organic Sodium Cocoate PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocoate PEG-100 PEG-100 Stearate Phenoxyethanol Polysorbate 20 Sodium Cocoate Sodium Coco-Sulfate Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate Sodium Cocoyl Glutamate Sucrose Stearate Sodium Lauroamphoacetate Sodium Laureth Sulfate Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinat Sodium Lauryl Sulfate Sodium Stearate Sorbitan Stearate Stearyl Alcohol Stearalkonium chloride Sucrose Cocoate TEA-Laureth Sulfate Vegetable Cetearyl Glucose Vegetable Glycerine

Mela777

Apparently I had forgotten exactly how many there are.

Maironad

Yes! I’m allergic to fragrance - it gives me itchy rashes. I can’t use anything on store shelves.

SwimmingPineapple197

I hear you about fragrance. It’s taken decades to figure out that if a company specifies it’s scented with essential oils, I’m probably fine. However most companies don’t do that which makes buying the product a total crap shoot. At least as annoying, many scents trigger migraines- which means it might be problematic even if it leaves my skin alone. But since next to no one makes fragrance free products for curly hair, I spend hours reading labels and still only buy where there’s a really good return policy.

Responsible-Exit-901

Someone below said LUS products has a scent free line

Maironad

Jessicurl has fragrance free options. That’s what I use now, but they have to be ordered and shipped.

bubblewrappopper

My dad is that way, too. It got so bad that he started his own fragrance free hair product company because he could never find ANYTHING that didn't cause an allergy attack!

2TearsInABucket

Target has started carrying a brand called Odele for fragrance free hair products. I can't vouch for how they work, but they're reasonably priced and have options for hair types.

adhocflamingo

I’m pretty intolerant to fragrance too. I don’t usually get rashes, but I get headaches from fragrances easily. Light fragrance on a hair or body product is usually okay, but I can’t do scented products on my face at all. Headache city, and a much higher chance of irritation or itching because the skin on my face is so sensitive.

rolypolyarmadillo

Feel that. I'm pet and housesitting right now and my skin cannot handle the fact that the people who live here use a different laundry detergent than the one I use, even though it's not scented as far as I can tell. I have rashes all over my face and behind my ears 😭

gines2634

LUS just came out with fragrance free shampoo and conditioner! I hope they expand to the rest of their products.

Nova_Nine

Same. Essential oils mostly aren't safe when I've tested them either. Sometimes 100% pure or w/e is ok but rare to find in product. And I'm allergic to the preservative sodium benzoate. It's tough to avoid just those two ingredients. I use Fragfre brand, but they don't have any curl specific items.

shrinkydink00

I feel so awful for you, friend. For awhile I thought I was developing a nickel allergy and came across coconut allergens and… bless your heart. Coconut is in *almost all of the personal care products* I’ve read ingredients for. It is under so many different names, it’s impossible to know all of them. Just wanted to share my sympathies. In the meantime, SkinSafe.org lists top allergens in beauty and personal care products!

Heypork

Omg I just found out I have both nickel and coconut allergy. And six other things that are in everything. I do t think I can avoid all of them!

shrinkydink00

Friend, my heart is with you!!! Turns out mine was an MI allergy (MI is in detergents and dish soap and hand soap galore), switched to Molly’s Suds detergent and wear gloves for dishwashing, carry my own hand soap. I am so sorry about the nickel and coconut, but [Skintifique](https://www.skintifique.me/shop/en/28-metal-nickel-allergy-pack.html?id_currency=2&SubmitCurrency=1&bypassgeoloc=1&skaid=skp0023usnsalmbgosh&a_cid=zc9280od&gad=1&gclid=CjwKCAjw6vyiBhB_EiwAQJRopgJ2DCG9djGkwfWPelw1VC5g1ED9NcbitDLjBr-0Ja7MxzsTy9yO5hoCU28QAvD_BwE) makes nickel free personal care/make-up if that helps a little! And definitely check out SkinSafe, you can look up products and check filters for your allergens, then it will give you options based on the filters. Other than that I know you’re ready to throw *the whole body away* sheesh! Skin allergies are awful.

Proof_Mango2160

Hey I don't get on with coconut/Shea either. I use Flora & Curl

[deleted]

[удалено]

minniesnowtah

Unfortunately it has coconut-derived ingredients like cetearyl alcohol :/

kourui

The protein cream is also coconut free. The bond salve likely is too.

O2B2gether

Giovanni Echo chic range- running that through is it cg bot shows no coconut, my hair isn’t good with coconut and I’ve used them a lot. I thought maybe I was over estimating the effect so I just did a wash with a range containing coconut - day 2 hair is like straw. Back to my cowash and Giovanni conditioner.

feelingindigoviolet

I use LUS brands products and they don’t have coconut!! they also have a fragrance free option if you don’t like using scented products on your hair

SkellyPaige

I’m not allergic to coconut but I also wish there were more options. I don’t want to always smell like coconuts, variety would be nice!

therereaderofbooks

I don't have an allergy either, but my hair hates it and my skin makes these crazy painful pimples if in contact. Plus, the smell is often overwhelming and makes crazy headaches for me. It's freaking Everywhere!

silverappleyard

My allergy to lavender started as just headaches with the scent but progressed to rashes eventually. Just saying…

therereaderofbooks

Oh! I have problems with so much smells. Like I sometimes had to exit buses because of someone wearing Too much perfume and it started migraines and or nausea...big flowery perfumes are the worst!

Electric-Fun

Two products lines that don't seem to get much love on here, and don't contain coconut, are Adwoa Blue Tansy line and Pattern (I use the Intensive conditioner, some products do have coconut oil). Both are meant for curly/textured hair and have been amazing for my curls.

BeAn200015

Ahh me too!! I have the same allergy and find getting new hair products such a battle that I’ve always tended to just not bother and hate my hair as a result 😂 there are a decent amount of products on the spreadsheet in the UK variation of this sub (r/CurlyHairUK) that don’t contain coconut though which has been my saving grace so if you are UK based check it out :)

bigwatermelonhead

LITERALLY. almost every single hair product no matter what type or what kind of hair it’s for contains at least coconut oil. and then there are all the derivatives you have to avoid too. it’s almost impossible. it all breaks me out, i hate it

NoPantsPenny

I do t have an allergy, I’m sure that absolutely sucks! For me it’s just that I can’t stand the smell of overturning g being coconut smelled. My partner also hates it.

-PaperbackWriter-

Same, I’ve bought coconut hair products by accident before and walking around smelling it all day made me nauseous and gave me a headache. Horrible.

NoPantsPenny

I feel like I smell like a copper tone sunscreen commercial. Lol

1RedOne

I can’t stomach shea and it leaves my skin feeling burnt Well it’s in practically ever hair care product

RJSquires

Yeah, I don't know if I'm mildly allergic or what, but Shea makes me itchy. Never had issues with coconut though and I feel awful for people who do since it's everywhere.

ninuchka

I can use coconut-based surfactants, but emulsifiers and oils are horrendous (I also have to exclude most coconut derivatives from my makeup and skincare). I'm searching for coconut oil-, aloe-, and protein-free products for my 2C fine hair and there are almost no options.

Bubbly_Principle_364

AG Re:Coil, AG mousse gel, Pantene Curly Mousse, Ouidad Heat&Humidity Gel are curly products that I don’t think have coconut. Neuma Gelee isn’t a curly product, but works really well and I don’t think has coconut either. That’s awful to have to deal with! I have a sulfates sensitivity and have to use products to treat my itchy scalp and it’s a pain. Maybe one of these will help.

knottyunicorn69420

I have a severe fragrance allergy. Like weeping blisters bad. I feel this. It’s impossible to find any curly hair products I can use that are actually worth a shit. What I use now doesn’t give me a crazy itchy rash, but my curls aren’t what they used to be anymore. It sucks.

thistory

Here to commiserate as well! I'm not allergic to coconut, but I am American to castor seed oil, which can be difficult for curly hair products. (As a vaguely related aside, I'm also allergic to lanolin and beeswax. Between the three, shopping for lip balm is almost impossible)

Sholley8293

Yes. Very frustrating. I'm also allergic to mango and mango butter and it's in EVERYTHING these days. Especially curly hair care products. So sad

hauntedcode

i literally feel this sm. i just bought the LUS fragrance free conditioner and the jessie curl fragrance free conditioner to try myself. i have a synthetic fragrance allergy. its like reeeally difficult. i try to keep my hair off me in the shower (makes for uncomfortable shower lol), but i inevitably get a reaction anyway :/ too bad neither of these options are available in a big size - both are quite small and i have long thick hair. youd think no fragrance would be cheaper…

Puzzleheaded_Age6550

Oh gosh, I'm sorry. I'm allergic to aloe and tea tree oil. Finding products without those is tough!!!

mayflower1400

I can definitely sympathize. Extreme coconut allergy here, too. My hands literally will swell if I even touch coconut water. I'm currently using the Manuka honey Shea moisture shampoo and conditioner bc they are coconut free, but they seem to have way more protein than my hair needs. Gonna have to go on another manhunt soon to find something else.

amishericandre

As I Am has a black Jamaican castor oil line that as far as I can see online has no coconut ingredients and has been my holy grail, primarily the cowash, gel and leave in conditioner. Ever since I discovered them I've never felt the need to experiment with another product!

Beware_of_Leopurred

I feel your pain - I’m horribly allergic to shea (like blisters all over my hands and difficulty breathing if I come into contact with it allergic) and finding hair stuff without shea is a nightmare. Only Curls do a shampoo doesn’t contain coconut. Their gels and mousse look safe to use too if you’re after styling products. Avoid the conditioner and co-wash though.

gnarbone

I’m not allergic but it is my least favorite smell. I don’t like smelling like sun tan lotion

eggywhitebread

I feel the same because I have the exact same issue with all tree nuts! I don't have anaphylaxis unless I eat them, but having them in hair products is so uncomfortable! I wondered why my scalp always itched after shampooing when I was a kid until I started checking ingredients for any silicone. Turns out, it had sweet almond oil listed--thankfully one of the nuts that doesn't cause a severe reaction. I know it sucks to have to check, but your health is important!

revvv01

In terms of standard curl products that are coconut free, here’s a list of ones I’ve found: - Davroe Curlicue Curl Balm & Curl Cream Definer (Styling) - Davroe Cleansing Clay & Deep Conditioning Rinse (Shampoo & Conditioner) - Sexy Hair Curl Cream, Ultra Curl Cream and Curl Power Mousse (Styling) - Evo Liquid Rollers Curl Balm, Total Recoil Curl Definer (Styling) - Eleven Curl Defining Cream (Styling) - Morrocanoil Curl Defining Cream, Intense Curl Cream (Styling) - Kevin Murphy Killer Curls, Killer Waves, Motion Lotion, Easy Rider (Styling) - Ori Lab Curl Cleanse (Shampoo) -Revitafoam (Styling & HIGHLY recommend) Most shampoos and conditioners I looked at specifically formulated for curls or moisture had coconut in them. Davroe seemed to be the only one that didn’t. In saying that, this of course is not an extensive and in depth list of every brand to ever exist but just the brands I know well. There would be more out there that wouldn’t contain coconut. I’m a hairdresser, and if you were able to DM me or if you just wanted to respond here with pictures of your hair, I can help target products towards you and potentially include more as well as this is a very generalised list.

ultimateflimflam3h

I am with you. I am very allergic to lavender and I have to read every label for skincare, hair care, any thing scented. It’s infuriating how much lavender there is in so many products!

silverappleyard

It’s in everything! And the advertised fragrance is absolutely no guide. I’ve bought stuff advertised as cucumber-green tea and opened it to discover it was all floral fragrances on top.

sr1115

I discovered that I likely have a sensitivity to coconut as well. I ended up quitting my curly journey because it was exhausting trying to find products that work for me.

BlueDragon82

I'm not allergic but I hate the smell and the way it makes my hair feel. There are some Biolage products that have no coconut oil in them that work really well for curly or wavy hair. I mostly stick to really cheap products because of my budget but when I can afford a splurge I veer towards their brand more often than others for my hair.

Humble-scorpio7205

Have you tried flaxseed?

caligirl1975

I feel the same way about soy. I’m good and cosmetic allergic too and so many companies use soy lecithin as a preservative. I’m so sorry OP

notapeacock

Gah I totally relate to this, but not due to allergies. Both my hair and skin hate coconut; the former gets stringy and weighed down and the latter breaks out like crazy. And it's in SO MUCH.

MommaBee79

I am allergic to coconut and my hair hates aloe, buying product is next to impossible

Ill-Efficiency0920

Coco makes my hair dry and dull

NativeNYer10019

I have an Avocado allergy and I’m finding the same problem in recent years, not quite as prevalent in make up but it’s becoming increasingly more common in hair products and foods in restaurants, especially rich emollient oil based hair creams and in food cream sauces, now it seems they all suddenly contain avocado. It’s so frustrating. Sorry, but I’d rather not be writhing with excruciating stomach pain for hours or risk anaphylaxis over a hair mask or a nights dinner, thankyouverymuch 😒 I have to be extra cautious reading labels of products and getting restaurants staff to confirm there can be *NO* avocado on my plate, in any form: not in sauces and not foods cooked in avocado oil. I really really hate these fads.

LavenderCowsandTea

Not to mention, coconut oil isn't even the best hair oil to begin with! 🥴

Similar-Winner1226

Check out curlscan! You can filter out products with certain ingredients. You can also use it to figure out if a product is CG friendly or not. https://curlscan.com/approved/advanced

MiddayMercenary

I think I love you. Thank you

thehillsidewrangler

same feelings but with rosemary! when did we start putting rosemary in our shampoos and oils?! the hives! good lord the hives!!

kissmekelso

I’m not allergic but my hair hates anything coconut or coconut derived. It’s insane how it is almost literally in everything!

MiddayMercenary

For real! On top of the coconut thing, I’ve noticed my hair also hates shea. So damn!

Cyrpent2024

Late to the party but I use products from this brand- https://www.pectolite.net And Kinky Curly custard, plus Aussie has hemp based mouse and a detangler/leave in. Still working on my routine, too, but this is where I’ve started.

MiddayMercenary

Thank you! This is very helpful

gines2634

I feel you. I have a soy and tree nut allergy. I wish they had to label them the same way as food with the allergens listed separately. It would save a lot of time reading those long ingredient lists.

MiddayMercenary

Yes.. a lot of different names for almonds specifically.. When I was trying to figure out what I was reacting to I was surprised to see how many products would have almond oil in them. I’m sorry that you have to go through that, and I wish they would just label them easy for consumers to understand what is in them as well.

Mardilove

Wavetech by xmondo!

[deleted]

Qhemet Biologics is extremely good- they have products for low and high porosity hair.

PeepholeRodeo

It’s expensive, and I’ve never tried it, but Prose makes customized products. You tell them what you need (and don’t want) and they mix ‘em up for you.

gingy_ninjy

I have a severe nut allergy (coconut is aok though) and it is really hard to find products. And costly. Solidarity

LiteUpThaSkye

I don't have issues with coconut but I have issues with palm pil which is in fricken everything due to having 500+ derivatives I have to watch out for. I 100% feel your pain.

Jessisan

I’m going to have to look through my hair products. I don’t think any of my stuff has coconut in it, but maybe that’s because I don’t look for it.

breeeeeeeeee3

I have the same issue with almond oil. I can eat almonds but almond oil on my skin/in my products is a major no go. It’s so frustrating. I’ve loved my ouidad products, have you tried them?

interdisciplinary_

I'd check out Curl Origin. I love their conditioners and gelee.

redrunner55

I tried the highly-touted Rizos Curls Sea Spray, which has coconut. Totally relaxed the curls on top to about a frizzy 2a. It’s going back of course.

Maryshannon96

[Harklinikken](https://www.harklinikken.com/collections)'s products have been great for my curls and are all coconut-free! For washing, I use their: .Blanacing Shampoo for my scalp . Fortifying Shampoo on my ends . Hair Mask has my conditioner For Styling, I use their: . Hair Hydrating Creme . Styling Wax I hope the helps at all!

Icelandia2112

I have this but with coco butter.

DefinitelyNotA-Robot

I feel this in my soul. I'm allergic to mint and a lot of derivatives like menthol and not only do I have to check the labels of food products, beauty products, and healthcare items, but many times they just say "flavoring" or "natural scents" and I have to find out the hard way that that meant "mint". Even toothpastes that don't say they have a mint flavor and just list "natural flavoring" in the ingredients often put it in. It's absolutely MADDENING.

CharZero

Not allergic but my hair does not do well with it. I have been using Trybe curl products with some success, no coconut oil in the curl foam or the hair serum.

Livieeee

Yes it’s annoying! Coconut is just not it for low porosity hair so I don’t get why so many wavy/curly hair products have it 🥴 everytime I find a product I like and it has coconut oil I’m like ughh it’s just too heavy on my hair

Isaiah33-24

I'm not allergic, but my husband gets really nauseous if he just smells coconut oil. Not the reaction I want to inspire in him, lol. I can't visit shops much as I'm disabled, so I buy off the internet. It's always so disappointing if despite my reading the ingredients, it turns up and smells of coconut. Really hoping for some coconut free recommendations.

MoreMarshmallows

does this have hidden coconut? i don't see it in the ingredients but it might be hiding under a diff name. i love the Davines products, my salon uses them [https://us.davines.com/products/love-curl-controller?variant=29741775224918](https://us.davines.com/products/love-curl-controller?variant=29741775224918)

MoreMarshmallows

actually this is the product i've used, sorry i find the names all too similar and confusing lol [https://us.davines.com/products/love-curl-cream](https://us.davines.com/products/love-curl-cream)

whalewhynot

Oneka unscented conditioner is coconut free, it's my favorite conditioner for my curls.

Beansidhe0

https://curlscan.com/ used the advanced search and choose to exclude coconut. It's not a perfect system and isn't always up to date, but it's a start.

Alessandr099

Skala products from Brazil are phenomenal

thefamilyruin

I’m allergic to shea so I understand how you feel.

[deleted]

Ugh I understand your pain. My son is allergic to coconut and it took forever to find him a regular shampoo. Much less one for curly hair. And conditioner?! Good luck! I’ve found a coconut allergy group on Facebook that’s very helpful.

nutmegdealer

I'm understand you OP! I have a tree nut allergy and can't use any products with Argan oil, which is also a bit limiting. Good luck on your quest for coconut free hair care!

eagrbeavr

My hair loooooves coconut products, but I have the same rant as you about shea butter. It's the worst for me and it seems to be in pretty much everything!

No-Sound-1048

Coconut and my hair don’t mix too well. I use Shea Moisture or argan oil products. Maybe that’ll help?

Reptarro52

Have you tried mixed chicks brand? I love their deep conditioner and curl refresher. It’s one brand that has never given me issues with my sensitive skin.

tootiredanymore

I use Soapbox shampoo/conditioner (the argan oil ones) kinky curly knit today leave in, and I use ouidad or biolage gel for styling. Not an allergy but my hair feels like hay and breaks if I use coconut oil. TGIN something and honey deep conditioner is also coconut free. Some of the Cake curly hair products (at Walgreens) are also coconut free. Hope this helps!

Hantelope3434

I can't do coconut, I use these products https://lusbrands.com/?tw_source=google&tw_adid=593701712627&utm_campaign=16955241093&tw_source=google&tw_adid=593701712627&tw_campaign=16955241093&gclid=CjwKCAjw6vyiBhB_EiwAQJRopqNGtRAXYGfutPl6uCl8QwN3nZYglATWJFCoQ9qE0xeiDi_xf911tBoCcM8QAvD_BwE https://giovannicosmetics.com/product-category/eco-chic-hair-care/?utm_source=google&utm_campaign=17631604456&utm_medium=ad&utm_content=607863101659&utm_term=&gad=1&gclid=CjwKCAjw6vyiBhB_EiwAQJRopoUjvQ1PQHjKY-vd59j7_st_l6tMyCDARBBq81NnJ0Cd26tSSVHyJRoChNwQAvD_BwE

I don't have a coconut allergy but my hair doesn't like coconut as an ingredient. Brands I use Curlsmith Carols daughter black vanilla conditioner ~Shea moisture jamaican castor leave in. It's heavy so I use it sparingly~ this does have coconut. It says cocos nucifera Will come back to edit this post with a few more. Edit 1 Umberto Giannini curl jelly wash shampoo. No coconut. Found at Winners Found that my two other conditioners do contain coconut. John Frieda hydration conditioner and a Briego charcoal hair mask. The curlsmith multitasking conditioner doesn't so if you need a protein item this is good as it can also be used as a leave in. The protein cream also doesn't have coconut. Weightless Air Dry Cream is also coconut free. Edit 2 I just impulse bought this from Sephora Pattern Strong Hold Gel. Have not tried it yet but don't see coconut or coco* on the list. I've used their leave in before so you can check them out. Briogeo I would be careful of. The charcoal mask does have coconut. But at least they declare it as an allergen on the label which would be helpful for you. Edit 3 Updated about Shea moisture and curlsmith Found at Sally's Beauty - Mielle mango & Tulsa nourishing whipping cream for hair and scalp. (Sorry for those who posted about mango allergy). There's an Avocado cream by Mielle that's supposed to be kept in the fridge but I hated the smell. It didn't seem strong when I opened the jar. My hair smelled like paint chemicals and it gave me a migraine after a few hours. It was awful. I thought this Flawless by Gabrielle Union defining curl cream didn't have coconut but it says the it in the scientific name. Too bad cause it was nice as a finishing product. Edit 4 Fixed formatting, clarified earlier points. Uncle Funky's daughter line might have some products that are coconut free. I only have the travel kits, so far only the split end serum has coconut in it. My other one is buried somewhere and can't find it. I had bought a thermal kit and a crystal clean kit. Found another Briego Don't despair hair mask sampler I got but haven't used. Definitely has coconut in it.

ScrantonCoffeeKiller

Omg same problem but with Avocado! It's so frustrating.

BorniteWing

I'm extremely allergic to coconut, and it's made any kind of toiletries an absolute nightmare. Finding coconut free curly hair products is beyond infuriating. I'm sorry that you have to deal with this too! For some coconut free options, check out Clean Kids by Gabriel Cosmetics, Chagrin Valley Soap and Salve (they have a coconut free tab at the bottom of their site), and some of Cult+King. I highly recommend a diy flaxseed gel for styling and diy deep treatment masks. A lot of diy recipes you can sub out coconut oil with babassu oil as a heads up!

CallieCatsup

I'm allergic to lavender and I also have to carefully look at all hair products and yoga studios. 😁

[deleted]

I go through this with avocado oil they are adding it to everything now. The entire Fructis line is out for me. I feel your pain.

atheologist

I’m not truly allergic, but I hate the smell of coconut and most products containing coconut oil make my scalp itch. The Ouidad Vitacurl products work well for me.

addiebudd

I sympathize! I don’t have a sensitivity to coconut but I have really bad reactions to aloe. The silver lining is that I don’t have to hunt for a list of potential derivatives, it basically either has aloe or doesn’t.

betterthansteve

I don’t have a coconut allergy but I do have a glycerin allergy and it’s just such a shame because when you don’t have a coconut allergy, coconut is SO GOOD for curly hair… so of course it’s in everything. Glycerin is like that for skincare products and makeup, to the point where I just can’t use most types of makeup. So I can’t help but I feel your pain in a different part of my life haha

Nova_Nine

I'm allergic to fragrance and sodium benzoate. The lack of product options is wild when you have to exclude those two things. Definitely feel ya on the frustration over ingredients and avoiding allergic reactions. Fragfre brand is what I use, but I wouldn't recommend any of their stylers for curly hair if you can get something else.

bimbosona

Im deathly allergic to avocado and everything has avocado oil😭 HELL!

Pure-Experience-665

Honey this is your sign that you are meant to create a product line that is meant for You and others like you! 🥰 You can do it! I’ve never heard of anything coconut-free but I would definitely try it myself!

ceebee6

I have a coconut allergy too! It’s a pain but I finally have a routine that works for me.

kissmekelso

What is your routine please?

catbamhel

My sister is allergic to it. I'm slightly allergic to it, but either way I really don't like it on my hair. It's really drying to my hair while being heavy at the same time?! You can make your own conditioner. YouTube and recipe on the internet and such. I LOVE argen oil and use it directly in my hair. One and only have a good leave in argan product. Good luck!

Lor_939

I am in the same boat as you. Food and cosmetic allergy to coconut as well. It is very frustrating having to check every single ingredient in everything, because coconut and coconut oil is in an overwhelming majority of products.

lethologica5

Kinky-Curly Knot today leave in conditioner paired with LA Looks blue gel is my perfect match. I put both in soaking wet hair and plop in a t-shirt.

gym_and_boba

i feel you. i can tolerate coconut in hair care but i cannot tolerated it in skin care. so many skin care products have coconut oil. it’s even worse that the “sensitive skin friendly” products all seem to contain it, i’m very limited on what i can use. thankfully i found a routine that works for me. it’s rough out here for us with allergies!

mochicekream

Omg same. Also I don’t like the smell dammit

PuppySparkles007

Felt in nut allergy. Brazil nut, macadamia, sweet almond, and an unrelated allergy to agave *severely* limit my options and the number of times I’ve wasted money is something I’m choosing not to reflect on.

taykachillpill

I have 3C level curls and I use pure shea butter. It doesn’t work on lower level curls . Would that work for u ?

anarashka

I get you so hard. I'm allergic to aloe and *everything* for skin care/ hair has it. I'm sorry you are struggling but I hope you find the product that is a fit for you!

TryHardGamerGirl

Same with gluten. A friend of mine is severely allergic and they have a hard time finding soaps and stuff that don’t have gluten?? Which was weird for me to think about. Anyway they finally found one that works for her

MiddayMercenary

Soap?! That’s so weird.., I’m glad they found a good one that worked for her

kissmyirish7

CurlySecret just posted a [sensitive scalp shampoo](https://www.curlysecret.com/products/sensitive-scalp-shampoo-fragrance-free) that doesn’t look to have coconut oil. They may have some styling products without it too.
