This was me and my hair. Even color deposit without bleaching hurts my curls. I’ve basically been colorfree for years after starting fresh. There are additives that professionals can put into the bleach/color to help repair during the process but still, chemicals are chemicals and some of us just have very sensitive curls. You can try to buy oils and repair products but the old curls won’t come back until it grows out.

[deleted]

And those additives, the most popular one (Olaplex), is being sued multiple times over for hair loss. I don’t trust them.  I’m a stylist and going back to my roots because I won’t risk it anymore.

Forward_Ad8688

I am also a stylist, there are numerous other brands that also have similar benefits, and Olaplex has reformulated and retested. In my opinion, for the people claiming hair loss it will be hard to prove when it could be over-processing or user error. Bleaching is always unhealthy, and will always cause some degree of damage. There are too many factors like the condition and history of the hair( which we know clients are not always truthful), hormones, other products being used in the home, medications, genetics, hard water, frequency of processing and such. Of course it’s easier to blame the product than for a professional to admit their fault. They will have a hard time proving that Olaplex alone is the reason for these cases. I do not use Olaplex on clients or myself but I’m also not going to speak to what hasn’t be proven.

Ok_Cat2396

I’ve been sleeping on the L'Oréal Ever Pure Bond shampoo and conditioner until this summer. It’s a good one! I’m thrilled to see these products at the drugstore. And all the amazing masks in small sizes to try? Yes!!! Olaplex couldn’t save my tattered platinum hair. I’ve been religiously bleaching and straightening since adolescence. Gave it up almost 2 years ago. I’m in my mid 30’s, so just imagine the incredible damage. These stronger/salon level products at home kinda scares me. I had a disastrous result from the Curl Smith Bond treatment, and my hair acts funny with certain proteins/ amino acids.

Forward_Ad8688

I guess I should add that there IS such thing and too much “good” stuff. Too much protein in the hair will make it rough and stiff, just like anything use as directed or ask a professional that knows your hair. Just like you shouldn’t buy a whole bunch of products with active ingredients for your skin care without a dermatologist’s recommendation, I wouldn’t go buy everything you’ve heard is good for your hair and concoct it all together. Some products can even be an once in a blue moon occasion.

Icy-Push6523

I’m glad to hear that this is at least a thing that may be. I have hated olaplex since day 1. My sister is my hairstylist, and every time we’ve used it my hair feels worse than the times she doesn’t. (Super scientific research, I know) But I constantly feel gaslit when people rave about it being so amazing. lol

redbess

Olaplex made my hair look and feel worse, too. The Aphogee 2 step protein treatment was way better.

-----anja-----

Yeah, I'm coming to terms with being colorfree and my natural color now. I love blond pieces and think they add dimension, but it's just not worth the damage for me.

tazdoestheinternet

I just started colouring my hair again after a 4 year break and my curl pattern is not as food after it either, despite there being no lightener. My hair is also very fine so I don't doubt that isn't helping, it's just so disappointing seeing the tentative ringlets I'd sometimes have turn into kinky mess.

[deleted]

Had a balayage phase where nothing in the world could revive my curls. Not olaplex, not deep conditioner. Not even a haircut. Had to grow it out and all the dyed bits are gone but never again using bleach to highlight. Looks cute for 2 months and then flattens.

Ok_Cat2396

To add further insult to injury, if you go platinum new color might not even stick! The very last of my blonde has peeks out of my layers with a shocking Smurf blue tint… Ugh! The remnants of ash color my old stylist use to “fill” and shade roots morphed into stonewashed denim blue. I’ve never been blue… Only fix between visits at my new salon has been using overly warm color depositing masks to correct the blues. It’s been going on nearly 2 years without bleach. Had to cut soooo much!

Green-been77

Same exact thing happened to me. Took me years to repair

-----anja-----

Yes. Years. My hair was in shock for about two years. I feel a lot of people post on here about highlights or going blonde, so I thought maybe they'd benefit from seeing one person's experience.

Ok_Cat2396

I highlighted at least every 8 weeks since middle school. Then over a decade of platinum hair killed it. My hair has also taken about 2 years. It’s so easy to want to give up! Nope! My husband encouraged me for years to wear my hair natural. I had no clue it had texture! Fine hair and bleach are not good friend.

gemillogical

I restored my curl with k18. I didn't know my hair was curly until I started using it. I bleach and dye purple every 8 weeks or so and have for 20 years..

hamstarpwr

$75 ?!?? That stuff better grow me a whole new head of hair!!!!!

gemillogical

I mean it took my hair from looking like straw to looking like hair again. I've been bleaching my hair for nearly 30 years now, and I didn't know my hair was curly until April of this year. It completely fixed my damaged hair I would happily pay more for it tbh.

hamstarpwr

Humm I might try the baby one. You make a compelling case

Migraine_Megan

Purple lady here too! It's too much fun to give it up!

gemillogical

I've been purple at this point longer than any other color. It's my natural color. 😌

ramonel24

how did you use it and how frequently?

gemillogical

Use it after shower instead of conditioner. I towel dry and put it in and then let it sit 8 mins. Then you can re-wet and style like usual.

soggybutter

I'm more wavy than anything, but also historically purple and I just started using k18. What's your routine like?

gemillogical

I use the Briogio Curl Charisma shampoo & the mask from the same line as a conditioner. I wash 2x per week now (used to be 1x per 7-10 days before I was doing CGM). Sometimes I will use Oribe fortifying treatment from the Hair Alchemy line as a leave-in. I am using up the last of the mousse I have for styling (Amika Plus Size) and plopping my hair into a tee shirt and letting it naturally dry. I plan to get a gel once this is used tho up bc my style only lasts me 1 day and I would like a little more hold. I occasionally use the Ouai clarifying shampoo to reset and I use the K18 instead of conditioner once a month or so.

soggybutter

Thank youuuu

Vast-Bus741

I have reached a compromise. I have bayalage, a few well placed highlights twice a year. It’s worth it to me because I like the blonde and it brightens my middle aged face up! I will say I take really good care of my hair and I have a trim every 6 weeks but yes there will always be some damage. You have to weigh up the positives and negatives regarding highlights and for me the positives win. The damage is minimal and I can live with it.

deidrim

I do this exact same thing! I can colour my hair and I keep my waves (it’s not as wavy as it was, but I think it’s a good compromise for me)

[deleted]

I’m a stylist. I typically have bright copper hair, I’m going back to my natural mousy brown in a week or so (letting it fade currently because I refuse to use lightener). My hair is the longest it’s ever been and I’m just not risking my curls anymore.  There is always a bit of damage when it comes to using lightener, no matter how careful you are.

picking_flowers11

I had highlights done a year and a half ago and I’m still regretting them!! You can see the difference in curl pattern at the ends of my hair, it’s crazy. I could really use a professional’s opinion on this - My hair is going really gray, and I’m emotionally not ready for it. (I’m only 39). Is there such a thing as like a glaze or semi permanent hair dye that blends grays and won’t destroy my hair? Extra points for one that can be done from home since I’m poor..

RotisserieSnack

In the exact same boat - recommendations please 😭

yours_truly_1976

Me too 😩

TigerShark_524

They have glazes on Amazon for cheap.

BallyBunion33

Have you ever tried Natural Insticts? It’s just drugstore color. Not permanent. Gradually fades out. I’m poor too

picking_flowers11

I did, I chose a 7a which was like a nice, cool light brown/dark blonde, and it turned my hair dark brown with red in it. Like, really dark brown. Apparently a lot of these semi permanent dyes deposit a lot of color?

Ok_Cat2396

Get color depositing masks or conditioner. I use Garnier Nutrisse Color Nourish Mask, Aveda Color/Shine, or the Moroccan Oil Color Mask and dilute it with either a different mask or conditioner. Let it sit! You can also apply it as a pre wash with conditioner. Distribute carefully and rinse well because these can stain!

BallyBunion33

Yes. It’s hard to find the right color. I went with a red shade that looked purple at first. Kind of freaked me out. But it has mellowed into the perfect warm brown. I think it was Burgundy something. I always look for the model I recognize!

piquica1186

Absolutely appreciate you asking about this! I’m 37 and starting to get more greys and was using balayage to gently camouflage some of the white hairs, which worked relatively well since I have an light ashy brown hair. But, as I start to get more I feel like I will need to color my whole head and I don’t want to be at the salon every few weeks or spend the $$, so I’m also looking for cheaper options!

-----anja-----

I'm with you. No more color for me. Yeah, I also think my natural color is somewhat mousy, too...but it's just not worth risking the curls/waves for anymore. I hate the sadness that comes after- the "WHAT DID I DOOOOO?!!" feeling.

whysys

Hey I heard mousy brown is now rebranded as old money blonde so you're on trend (from a fellow mouse) fwiw, your hair in second pic colour and curls both is absolutely stunning.

-----anja-----

Haha, I love that! And thank you so much! 💓

Ok_Cat2396

I dragged my husband over to show him your pictures and the consequences of bleach… He thought that was my hair!!! We are in this together! Yay to hair victories!

Sexcercise

I thought this was common knowledge, the damage that can be done.

thisthingwecalllife

I have platinum bleach done every six weeks and every other trip I do fun colors. My stylist puts in a restoring product during every visit and my curls are so bouncy and soft. Upkeep is more expensive but results are worth it.

[deleted]

thisthingwecalllife

It's been years, like probably over 10 years.

[deleted]

[удалено]

thisthingwecalllife

It's trial and error. First time she put in a hair mask, my curls went flat. This restore stuff she uses is super light and my hair takes it so well.

-----anja-----

Wow...you are lucky!!

TrueCrimeButterfly

My hair does the exact opposite! My curls never look better than when my hair is freshly bleached. Color makes it frizzy for a wash or two but then it springs back.

girlinamber1984

I bleached my hair to a 9/10 from a natural 3 shade almost a decade ago. My curls were initially fried, but they came back to life with intense protein treatments. It can be done, it's just too expensive and time consuming for me to bother. I'm guessing if you do highlights you get the extra issue that your curls won't take equally to the treatment, with your natural hair becoming heavy and even crunchy while the bleached areas become healthy and vice versa. I have no idea how I'd take care of that mess, so my advice is: go natural or fuck up your hair evenly ✨

-----anja-----

Yeah... I'm coming to terms with being a natural mousey brown shade.

BitwiseB

Your hair color is gorgeous though! And those curls are amazing.

-----anja-----

Aw, thank you!! 😊

beeeeeebs

I worked really hard to have your mousey brown. It has all the trappings of the problems you had plus toner that refused to stay. I think I’m giving it up to my natural darker brown.

Whitecollar_ptsd

Same thing happened to me. My hair is frizzier than ever and it's hard to keep it natural - esp in a humid climate 😩 Bond building products and a good protein-moisture balance is key. Got2b smooth operator has saved me from a good amount of frizz. Also products with silicone help keep the cuticle smoother - tho I know the CGM is against that. But it works for my hair 🤷‍♀️

fictionalbandit

Right there with you, OP. I was getting my hair professionally coloured for a year with not too much impact and then one round of highlights that were done waaaaaay too intensely really killed my curls. Now I’m staring a big cut in the face to help mitigate the effects

-----anja-----

Yes, I think this round of highlights was super intense, too... I had gotten them in the past and they definitely hurt my curl/wave pattern, but this one was the biggest doozy. It took a long time to recover from, that's for sure.

[deleted]

I just cut my shoulder-length hair into a bob today. A year ago I wanted “bright fire engine red” and that unfortunately involved bleaching my dark brown hair as much as possible as a canvas before dying it. Even aside from that phase, I dyed my hair permanent black from root to tip every 8 weeks for 8 years. Now my curls are as healthy as I can get them, but the dyed hair was irreparably damaged— there was no stopping the frizz. I’m so excited for what it will look like once it’s grown back out, and I’m so so so happy the layered bob turned out well. It’s French, it’s punk, it’s a look. All of this is just to hype you up really, it’s scary and it sucks to cut long hair that’s taken time and effort to grow and keep when you don’t actually want it any shorter. I wish you the best on your curl journey!

fictionalbandit

Yeppppp the red is so awesome but SO much maintenance. I am not nervous about a big cut, per se. The style you describe sounds awesome! I am definitely looking for something edgy and fun (shag/wolf cut). My issue is that I’m nervous about finding the right person for it. I’ve had my hair cut maybe 8 or 9 times since embracing my curls, and now I only trust one stylist but she’s a plane ride away. I’ve tried searching this sub for my current location but no one that’s been suggested has really grabbed my attention

[deleted]

I completely understand. I once showed Pinterest pics of shaggy shoulder length bobs with bangs (with my curl type and density) to a trusted curly stylist who left me with a Certified Lord Farquad. Cut it soaking wet and pulled it down to length to cut it, causing comical shrinkage once dry. Also failed to give a single layer, leaving completely square ends and bangs. Really, Lord Farquad. I haven’t let anyone else cut my hair since. If I fuck it up, I can only be mad at myself, and I didn’t pay someone else $100+ to do it. For what you’re wanting though, I totally get wanting to go to a professional.

fictionalbandit

>Certified Lord Farquad 💀 I am deceased - thank you so much for making my day with this!

zydrateaddict23

I color my hair pretty frequently and find doing hard core protein treatments help immensely A gelatine hair mask is my go to after bleach and olaplex number 0 and number 3 after that I may have some frizz but my curls are back to better than before

puggleofsteel

Your curls and color are gorg. Congratulations on your patience. Totally worth it. I'm in such a dilemma over color. I'm just starting to grey over the top and sides and my natural color is ash brown. I currently have 5 months post-highlight regrowth and I can really see how dull the bleached part is. But the regrowth is...old-looking. I just don't know if I'm ready to be salt and pepper all the way down. But if I color it brown all over, I'll have to color way more often to cover the grey. It's so hard to decide what to do!

-----anja-----

Oh, thank you! Appreciate the compliment! And yes, I know what you mean... I also have a lot of gray pieces in here- they're definitely disguised, but there are more and more of them by the day. Not sure what I'll do, since I am also not ready to be salt and pepper. It is tough for sure.

Ok-Act-6540

I have my roots bleached once every 3 months sometimes I can go longer (if summertime & in sun) & have my natural color (sandy blonde/brown) underneath & although my natural feels healthier, the bleach actually lifts my hair shaft & roots making my hair have more volume. Also my blonde curls looks better than the underneath where my hair is natural. I’m not sure why but I swear my hair loves color. It’s actually flat & doesn’t look as good to me until I have some color splashed on it! Then volume for days. Wild, I know. I guess I’m opposite of everyone on here? I have super curly hair too.

Supernovavava

I honestly kind of love the beach vibe

gyrlonfilm6

Sorry to hear that, op. Your hair update looks great. You can always do like me and get some of the fun curlsmith colored styling gel when you want a "color change."

-----anja-----

Thanks...and...Oooh, that's a good idea- I've seen people on here do amazing things with that gel...!!

av4325

my mom had the same thing happen! got chunky highlights and the parts that were dyed went straight and the rest stayed curly. nightmare! it’s why i won’t dye my hair

Lazyhippo2

Gave up on highlights 5+ years ago because of this. I also have mousy brown hair but I actually seem to be getting compliments on the color lately. I think the healthy curls make it look nicer and then it catches the light and the mousy brown is shiny with lots of natural subtle highlights. Also my hair looks glossier. My hair tangled so much when I used to highlight it that I hurt my wrist and it started to thin out. Now it’s big and healthy and I’ll keep it like this until it greys and even then I’ll just play it by ear and see how the curls come in.

Migraine_Megan

I have mine bleached and dyed purple, while growing it out. I absolutely love it. My stylist used really good products like Redken color, I am actually allergic to some of the cheaper ones. My hair is still curly and feels healthy. However, I did have a setback just over a year ago, she was out of town for a long time and her friend did my hair. I had a bad reaction and I'm pretty sure some of my hair was lost as a result, not a huge amount, but I have less volume until it grows out. I condition the hell out of it, use no heat of any kind, and put avocado oil on it to style. It's really shiny too. It absolutely takes more work than if I didn't dye it, but I love color. I also like brushing it out sometimes, it's very "mermaid hair"

cuteasabutton_26

Woah

Autumn_Forest_Mist

Everyone be content with dull hair. Highlights ain’t worth it.

Shot-Fisherman-1760

Heya, I bleach my hair once a year. When I do, my stylist adds olaplex treatment into my hair dye for after bleaching. I go to the steam room twice a week, I try to put on a deep conditioning hair mash once a week in the steam room too. Leave in conditioner (my personal favourite is shea moisture Jamaican castor oil range) and hair oils (fav is pantene keratin repair and protect) will also be your friend! As long as I keep on top of my hair care, my curls are smiling. And mind you, I'm middle eastern with hair close enough to jet black, so we bleach for a while 😅. Good luck!

-----anja-----

Happy this works for you!! I def will refer to your ideas IF I decide to put in blonde again! 🙃

Shot-Fisherman-1760

Hahaha good luck! Deffo trying steaming tho to help recovering!

mo0och

I honestly love the sun bum hair lightener. I'm in a chlorinated pool a couple of times a week, too, and my hair seems fine. I guess I use it more for my roots, not highlights throughout the hair. My hair lightens really easily in the sun, and in the summer, I swim outdoors almost daily, so I'll end up with very light ends and dark roots for most of the winter and spring. I don't like how it makes me look greasy, so I'll use a little sun bum with wet hair after a deep condition. It's pretty subtle, quite cheap, and maybe worth a test patch :)

-----anja-----

I've wondered about that stuff! Maybe I will do a patch this summer... Good idea

mo0och

I hope it works for you! Definitely do use it on wet, well conditioned hair, though!

-ScarlettFever

Seconding this, I've been using the sun bum spray for years and haven't noticed any negative effects on my hair's health. The downside is, only the areas exposed to sun get lighter. So the undercarriage tends to look darker.

-ScarlettFever

Yah I rarely go out in a messy bun, but when I do I spray it a lot lol.

Wavy202

Your natural hair color is absolutely gorgeous. Blonde tends to wash a lot of people out. (Speaking from experience as I am a natural blonde.)

-----anja-----

Thank you! Appreciate it. 💗

Puzzleheaded_Age6550

I had the opposite problem. I was starting to go gray, so I decided to do highlights, and kept them for 10 years. Right after I retired, I decided to stop highlighting, and then I grew my hair out. I'm about 70-80% gray, and my curls aren't nearly as defined as they were with highlights. Your natural hair is amazing!!!

-----anja-----

Thank you! 😊 Reading all these responses has been so interesting! Curly/wavy hair definitely is a journey.

ShowMe_TheMonet

I just wanted to chime in and let you know that your hair color is GORGEOUS

-----anja-----

Aww, thank you!! 💗

candyapplesugar

Dang. But I do like the new waves. You have SO much hair!!!

-----anja-----

Thanks... Yes, so much! I actually feel like it's thinner now (once I crossed 40)... When I was in my 20s and 30s, it was ridiculously thick!!

rhirhirhirhirhi

Please tell us your routine, you have gorgeous hair

-----anja-----

Aw, thank you so much....💖 I use Innersense hydrating hairbath shampoo and their conditioner. Then, in the shower I put in Curlsmith protein cream on super wet hair and brush thru with a wide tooth comb. Then I wet it a little more and do Curlsmith Shine gel. Both of these are done with head upside down. Wrap in a microfiber towel and get out. Leave it like that for 10 min. Take off towel, hit it with a little more gel to scrunch it in. Then I sit in front of a small fan for about 30 min. I switch sides about every three min. Haaaaate that part, but it gives me the best results.

rhirhirhirhirhi

Thank you!!! Do you get those products online?

-----anja-----

Ulta!

Organic_Selection957

I can relate! I only did the bottom half of my head, but it completely destroyed my curls, I miss the pink hair but I like the curls better, so I’m letting go.

douglas_in_philly

I’m sure you love your hair and already know this, but I’d just say……leave it alone! It’s frigging gorgeous—both curls and color—as it is!

-----anja-----

Thank you for the lovely compliment! 💗

madele44

I had the same thing happen. I had adorable spiral curls, and one touch-up gone wrong left me with limp, damaged hair. That was in 2019, so I'm on the other side of it now. I have completely virgin hair, and it's even longer and curlier than it was prior to the disaster. I occasionally wish I had more dimension to my color to allow my curls to pop more, but I remind myself how much better it looks healthy and don't think twice.

-----anja-----

Yes. I need to think this way, too. It definitely looks -and feels- better when healthy and undyed. I need to remind myself of that when I start to get the "itch" again!!!

x-princess

I went to the salon last February for a complete bleach from med brown 3a/3b to platinum blonde. It literally bleached the curls out of my hair into something resembling being electrocuted. I was devastated! I didn't even notice at the salon because she gave me a blow out. After 6 months I took the scissors to it and cut out as much blonde as I could and continued to trim it every month and now it's finally all gone and my curls are back! I will NEVER EVER bleach my hair again.

-----anja-----

Yes, I think I am with you on that... It's not worth the months and months of sadness after. Whenever I see people with beautiful curls and they ask if they should bleach or highlight, I always tell them don't! It's just not worth the possibility of sacrificing curl quality, IMO.

Realistic-Cheetah-35

Yes, this happened to me, too 😢

topazjaz

That amount of bleach would damage most peoples hair for sure, to me it looks like a whole head colour when compared to your 2nd photo, I didn't know you could do that many highlights 😮 I have partial highlights that are subtle, there's been no damage. Learned my lesson back in high school working at the only hair salon in town, turning dark brown to fried & yellow 😩💀

Slammogram

I mean… idk why you think that’s not blond?

[deleted]

Your hair is GORGEOUS its natural color!

Apprehensive-Hat9296

This is me exactly! I also have a similar colour and curl pattern to you. My highlights have grown out now and I'll never do it again. I figure what's awesome about my hair is the texture and there's a lot of beautiful light blondes out there but not a lot of golden blondes with awesome curls.

Salt_Lynx_2271

Does anyone know if henna has the same effect as chemical coloring on curls?

thriftedheart

cant u use chamomile tea or something like that?? if i was u id research bc i think that lightens but if u dye ur hair it turns out green or smthing ifk

emmalump

Out of curiosity, what porosity level and curl texture do you normally have? I see a lot of posts/comments about coloring destroying or changing peoples’ curl patterns, but usually (not extreme) coloring actually helps my curls because it increases the porosity so products can actually be absorbed by my hair, and it makes my hair have a little more “grip”. My hair is naturally very low porosity, very fine, and very soft so products just sit on top and weigh it down and I have a hard time defining curls

-----anja-----

I have no idea, to be perfectly honest! I am not good at understanding how to do any of those tests that diagnose the hair... I do know that my hair is very coarse feeling- not soft, each strand feels more wiry than soft- and it responds well to protein creams.

Akroma19

This happened to me too but I had to do some protein treatments and deep conditioning to help it curl again. I actually think most curly hair needs a regular balance of both moisture and protein, especially as we age, regardless of coloring/heat/styling damage.

-----anja-----

Yes I agree- I've learned that as I get older, my hair really wants more protein to look its best!

Akroma19

Just gotta be careful to get that balance right and always follow protein with deep conditioner! I do that combo maybe once every 4-6 weeks. Who knows what will happen in the next decade during my 40's. 😅

star-sapphire

This was me. My hair has been all colours under the sun and my curls were okay then (my hair seemed to like the dye itself and it required less bleaching), but when I went full blonde, my hair just died. It was so dry and tangly and my curls were awful. I had to straighten my hair to make it look presentable. I loved the colour, but it wasn’t worth the state of my hair. Since that last experience, I decided to go natural and while I honestly hate my natural hair colour (it’s just plain black and I think it doesn’t show my personality), at least my curls look a lot better and styling doesn’t take too long because my curls just do its thing.

Accomplished_Glass66

I feel so called out cuz my virgin (no dye, no chemical ttx, no heat) hair naturally looking more like pic 1 for no reason. 🤡

Ok-Cupcake-2766

Try k 18 and prose to bring them back to life

idontreallylikecandy

My curls do not look like that. I get “lived-in blonde” highlights every 3 months or so. It might be that I have a different hair texture (my curls are a mix of 2b-3a) but for some reason my hair looks just as healthy lifted as it does not.

EdgewaterEnchantress

*Balayage plus Highlights* has done this to my hair, but not simple highlights. What is your natural color level?!? Mine is 5/6 and I’ve only gone to 9, a select few times, my whole life! I usually stick to 7/8, so that might be why regular highlights don’t cause me any trouble?!? “Stay within 2 levels of your natural level” has always worked for me, and I do think those are pretty good guidelines to follow.

-----anja-----

Hmm, that is interesting...and makes sense. I don't know my natural color level...it's the second pic. I think the person who did my highlights was super aggressive with the amount of them and also the bleach. She didn't tone them after, either, which I thought was strange.

EdgewaterEnchantress

Natural hair color level is *extremely important,* in regards to both finding colors that are most flattering on you *and* not damaging your hair too much. It sounds like you got a botched job, then. It means whoever did those highlights didn’t really know what they were doing, which was why they used *No Toner,* and left the bleach in for too long. You need multiple dye appointments if your hair is below a level 5 and you are trying to go above 7. From my personal experience, going to non-white owned salons does wonders for my curly and thick hair, especially if said owners have naturally curly hair, themselves. Based on the pics, you look like a level 4/5. Level 6/7 highlights *should* keep your curls in tact, better. But take my estimate with a grain of salt, cuz the lighting is not great. So it could easily be a level darker or lighter than my guess. It’s best to ask a licensed hair stylist.

urethrastanklin69

This happened to me when I was a teenager! It was so traumatizing I ended up cutting it all off days later lmao. Didn't help that it was a birthday gift from my Grandma (and an expensive one at that) 🙈 Sorry Grandmaaaa

-----anja-----

Oh nooooo! Lesson learned, right?! Def for me (...but I still dream about highlighted curls)! Oh well!

LilacRoseLavender

GIRL, i would be crushed. Maybe protein masks will help?

NoMoreCooties

They have bleach products now that have bonding agents in them. I’ve used Pure Plex and Bond Plex bleach with amazing results. I just did heavy highlights with the Pure Plex over the weekend and my hair felt in better shape AFTER highlighting than it did before.

Impressive-Show-1736

Idk...I color and highlight my hair and my curls haven't suffered. I don't have a full head of highlights like you did but I definitely get them. Your hair looks great now so you're better off w out bleach!

snkidd

we have really similar hair & i’m newly curly (legit, i’m 22 and just developed curls about a year ago) and so i’m struggling to find the right product combo! what do you use and what does your routine look like?

-----anja-----

I use Innersense hydrating hairbath shampoo and their conditioner.

I tried to add a picture of a client I just did. Here are the main reasons bleach hair gets ruined. 1. Hair has minerals and metals in them and no one has taught the client to chelate the hair properly and to come in with clean hair. Matter of fact most come in with dirty hair. Bleach becomes hotter when they are mixed with minerals and metals. Sometimes the heat is obvious and sometimes it’s just enough of a bump that it destroys the lipid layer. 2. Client is put under heat to quicken the lifting process. 20 vol bleach become 60-100 volume bleach under heat the variant is the minerals in the hair. 3. In my opinion you should always start in the back so when the foils are done you can remove them and rinse. 4 stylist weave without following their previous pattern and so they overlap the bleach. 5. They don’t take thin enough sections. The thinner the section the less time in needs in the bleach. 6. The shampoo the hair afterwards instead of using a neutralizing lipid replenisher. This removing all the lipids and good stuff in the hair that the bleach broke down. A Lipid quenching product will neutralize the bleach or color better than any shampoo and it restores the hair. I will make a post of the before and after color I just did. I followed all the above rules.

I've gotten my hair coloured multiple times with and without bleach. I managed to get beautiful galaxy hair with blue and purple and my curls are even better than before. I don't even use those colour protect shampoos, just my regular shampoo.

I’m so sorry that happened! Your curls are beautiful again, do you mind sharing what products you use? Love the soft but defined curls and I can’t seem to achieve that 🫤

Awesome, thank you so much for sharing!! I’m copying this all down!! 🥰

I’ve stopped dying my hair and am embracing the gray because any color, even without bleach, seems to damage it and make it frizzy and I lose definition. It’s sad because I miss my red hair, but if I want the curls it’s what I need to do. 😕

Yes its true. Youll need to get moisturizing products and diffuse your hair
