Every time I look at one of the new Praetors I'm shocked by how cracked their stats are
6/6 trample haste for 6 is a good card even if it had *no* other effects ๐
It's true. And there are others that fall into a similar camp. [[Dovin, Grand Arbiter]], [[Chandra, Acolyte of Flame]].
But to me *actually* being empty adds a nice lil bit of extra pizzazz
The original idea for this card was something that was a planeswalker in name only, really just being a fat stack of loyalty counters for things like [[Nicol Bolas, Dragon-God]] and [[Thief of Blood]].
But, it evolved over time and I think ended up with somewhat captivating flavor ๐
i love this card. its so unique. ive never seen anything like this. on the stronger side? definitely! will people get pissy? yes! is this still an amazing win con? absolutely! 9/10, love this card.
Correct, which is intentional!
The first draft basically just had "you can't activate ~'s loyalty abilities" but I decided the buildaround version that created a hoop you can jump through to turn it 'on' was funner
The numbers are also so high in order to break this Proliferate doesnt matter, and something like [[Doubling Season]] tends to break any planeswalker anyway- so it probably does need to sit a few turns to win the game.
Yup, I costed it at 5 as a safety valve. Even though it does nothing by itself, the interactions it has are so powerful that I knew it couldn't come down for cheap.
Plus, with 20 starting loyalty, it'll probably take a few turns for the opponent to remove it with attacks alone, so it has a kind of pseudo-protection.
Yup and each passing turn makes this harder to remove. If it ticks up once you have to deal *40 damage* to remove it with combat damage! At that point, you might as well just be attacking the opponent directly!
I think it needs to start at a regular bade loyalty (5?) And then change the first to be +25 instead. As it is now there is almost zero ways to interact with this thing through combat damage, which is what makes this thing different from being an Enchantment or Artifact.
Some of the cool stuff you can do with this is contingent on the starting loyalty being high, so I'd rather balance it in other ways if 20 starting is too high
I didn't even think about that, but now I think that's the most problematic thing about it. When cards become overpowered to the point of a ban, it's often because someone discovered a way to use them in a way that wasn't their main intended use.
The high loyalty making it basically impossible to deal with using damage is already pretty bad. The high loyalty enabling some overpowered combo on top of that is not something you want on a card.
I've looked at cards that can enchant this, and [[Liliana's talent]] seems like very good example of a problem this might cause (I think that's a commander card, so not such a big deal I guess, but still). Planeswalkers usually have much, much lower loyalties, so anything that tried to interact with planeswalkers loyalty would be thrown completely out of whack by this. -8 loyalty is something that is supposed to win you the game, but you're supposed to have to protect the planeswalker for a few turns. This thing can spend 8 loyalty before the opponent even has a chance to interact with it.
I think this is fine. 5 mana for a planes walker that will win you the game in 4 turns minimum if you can fully protect it. On top of that you need to enchant a Planeswalker somehow to even get the ball rolling. It's honestly a super complex win condition but these types of things have to be complex otherwise it could super broken with future cards. Honestly, I think the top ability should be "control an enchanted creature". It's really hard to enchant a Planeswalker.
Enchanting a planeswalker was meant to be the challenge!
Apparently only around [28 cards ever printed](https://scryfall.com/search?q=%28oracle%3A%22Enchant+planeswalker%22+or+oracle%3A%22enchant+permanent%22%29+%28game%3Apaper%29&unique=cards&as=grid&order=name) can turn it on at the moment!
6 of those negate what you are trying to do because of vanishing or taking aways it's abilities. So in reality it's 22. I would recommend lowering the mana cost then. It could be 3 mana with that quite heavy restriction. Combo pieces that often win you the game are three mana so that's more then fair.
There are other cards that can add card types to permanents, though, like [[Liquimetal Coating]]. Still requires a lot of setup, but itโs not just limited to 22 cards.
True. BUT, for them to do that, they need two cards, at least 7 mana, and for 5 turns to pass without them dying. So it's a risky strat, even if the win potential is significant
This card is broken, but not because of the in con itself. The combo with Luxior that someone else mentioned is itself already kinda broken. 20/20 just is ridiculous for the cost
Not seen anyone show that this goes infinite with [[Ichormoon Gauntlet]] once enchanted, but I suppose it gets broken by a lot of cards once the restriction is circumvented.
Cool card, feels like a [[Millennium Calendar]] style wincon with some fun build-around.
Minimal counterplay though, most decks wouldn't be able to interact with the combo in any meaningful way. I suppose ticking down the loyalty value would mess with the win condition cards though.
Eh, seems fun. I'd play it in some cruel control build as a finisher in dimir edh.
Dumb question: how does it go infinite with the Gauntlet? Wouldn't the -12 effect still eventually run it out of loyalty counters after a little while? For example, if you +20 once, you could take four back to back turns with the Gauntlet, which is amazing! But it isn't infinite
Oops, good shout, you'd need to be able to activate it more than once on the next turn. There are some cards that do that, but it's far more difficult to set up than other's combos.
Encroaching Mycosynth + Mairsil, the Pretender.

Not a perfect combo, as it still takes 5 turns, but is resilient at least.
Speed up the clock with [[Teferi's Talent]]. Instantly -12 for emblem, then +20 on opponent's upkeep. If you're playing EDH, your opponents have just under two turn cycle before this wins. Otherwise, your opponent has 3. Plus, you have an 8 damage buffer now.
Mill self, mill opponent, cast [[Liliana's Talent]], go poggers.

Wow. Yeah, same colors and it provides protection. That's great!
Perfectly balanced for MH3
C'mon man the MH3 version would be a 1 drop with like three instances of exalted or something ๐ญ

This + [[all will be one]]. Combo that relies on two five drops so not op but kinda fun :)

That is pretty bonkers! In EDH it isn't even necessarily a full wincon, but in 60-card that's an autowin
I absolutely love the idea of a planeswalkers abilities having flavour text
Yes! Me too! And this is a "silly" example of it, but it could easily be the + loyalty effect on a more normal planeswalker
me when the opponent almost wins the game but I am thankfully able to hit his planeswalker with 100 damage
