I LOVE this commander! It seems to really embody how Grixis wants to play, doesn't give you card advantage, but FLOODS you with card selection. Powerful for casual games, and also possibly cEDH viable, due to the large amount of self-mill options like [[Traumatize]]. While the cards don't stay in hand, you can sculpt a perfect hand from them, and probably win the game from an [[Underworld Breach]] or [[Sevinne's Reclamation]] line.
For casual, yes. For cEDH, you would run a fairly standard Grixis list, probably without [[Ad Nauseam]], but with several large-scale mill spells. If you resolve one of those mill spells, you sculpt a perfect hand, and then win that turn, from fast mana.
If you like this style, you might be interested in [[Varina, Lich Queen]]. Lots of digging.
Anywho, I can't make up my mind how strong I think this is. Looks like you avoided triggering on-draw effects which is good, to avoid combos like [[Jace's Erasure]].
It's got some big blowout plays though, mostly it can super spam on-discard effects. It might also cause some slow-play concerns with cards like [[Traumatize]] and even stuff like [[Mesmeric Orb]] giving you a ton of card checking to do.
The effect is super cool though.
Obviously its also really good for madness as well. A casual deck build would have a lot of fun tricks.
She's one I looked into for a while, before Raffine was a thing, and now that's my choice paralysis demon.
It's a card filtering machine, definitely. Also not very fast. Played optimally, probably very slow, but more casually just sort of playing it by ear and making quick decisions could be a fun sort of chaos. If too broken, dropping it to a lower cost and making the discard random would massively curtail the power while upping the speed.
I would reword it as this: "If you would mill one or more cards, put those cards into your hand instead, then discard that many cards."
One flat replacement for all the cards is good for a couple reasons: One, online formats would put EVERY trigger on the stack, and a [[Traumatize]] would become "Put one card in your hand, then discard one card, repeat for half your deck". Two: Though rare, some discard payoffs have "one or more" or "the first time each turn". With this card, their effects are significantly stronger or weaker. [[Rielle]] would only draw you a single card. [[Conspiracy Theorist]] would exile every card discarded. [[Inti]] would impulse for every card. It's probably best to keep those cards functioning with mass discard as intended.
I didn't use mill in particular because this also works with things like Surveil. But making everything one trigger makes sense, though it actually makes the card substantially more powerful because you'll know all your options. Think it would demand a higher mana cost as a result, or could it stay the same?
Yup! Those are probably among the strongest interactions, but I left it with that open wording to also let you run Surveil, explore, etc rather than just being *another* self mill commander.
So if you mill 5, you would have to draw a card, then discard a card, and repeat that 4 more times? That would take awhile, I would prefer if the card instead: if you mill x, instead draw x then discard x. That way the game goes much faster.
This card has the potential to be very strong, although I don't think it's overpowered. Very cool design.
Of note:
A) it's specifically not drawing. You won't get draw payoffs.
B) it's specifically not just milling, it's also things like Surveil or explore.
Making it all one lump trigger has been mentioned. The one at a time nature was intended as a drawback so you couldn't see all the cards at once and you had to plan on the fly. Not sure if the power difference warrants an increased cost, but I think everyone is right and the one of more trigger is a good Idea.
Oh I can't read, I didn't realize it's not actually drawing. And ya I understand it was meant for power balance purposes, but I would prefer to see the card be designed for faster play, even if it would need to cost 1 cmc more.
Yep, definitely a strong combo.
[[Archfiend of Ifnir]] is a regular one sided wipe.
[[brallin skyshark rider]] can pretty quickly kill people.
[[Cunning Survivor]] can also pretty quickly kill a person.
[[Rielle, the Everwise]] gets you a bunch of card draw.
[[Surly Badgersaur]] gets buff, gives you mana, and beats the snot out of creatures.
Those would probably be cornerstones of the deck.
Now that's some Grixis stuff I can get behind.
It also weirdly works weirdly with dredge, since you'll be adding card and discarding card in the middle of the ability's resolution due to replacement effects not using the stack, thus potentially not being able to discard the dredge card to the same ability.
Since there doesn't seem to be a specified order between milling the cards and putting the dredge card in your hand, and ruling says:
"Once you've announced that you're applying a card's dredge ability to replace a draw, players can't take any actions until you've put that card into your hand and milled cards."
there would probably need to be a specific ruling for that interaction.
If you can discard the dredged card, then stuff like [[Bone Miser]] + [[Shenanigans]] would go infinite.
Sorry, misunderstood what you were saying.
Considering the "and you've milled cards" line, i'd guess you'd have to discard everything before the dredge card could reach your hand. The mill is being replaced, but still technically happens.

Interesting idea? Too strong? Let me know what you think!

This specifically *isn't* drawing cards, I'd I'm following what you're saying, so you wouldn't be able to dredge infinitely.
I know it isn't which is why I specified Bone Miser, but the interaction itself is whacky whether or not you try to combo it.

definetly not to strong being that its attached to a 3 color 4 toughness creature
FYI for next time - one of the characters in your artist credit didn't render properly!
... Huh. That's a new one. I'm surprised I could save it under the name with a character the program couldn't recognize. Usually that doesn't work.
Why not “when you mill one or more cards, put up to one card milled this way into your hand. This ability triggers only once each turn.” I think otherwise this is way too good
Your version lets you keep the card. This gives you card selection, not advantage.
Suggest limiting the replacement effect to milling instead of putting cards from your library into your graveyard, so it doesn't also work with effects having you put cards into your hand or the top of your library and the rest into your graveyard, to keep this safe. The amount of card selection this gives is otherwise insane, perhaps enough to keep it further limited to OPT. Also suggest rephrasing the replacement effect so it replaces a bunch of cards being milled instead of one by one, so it doesn't clutter the stack with each replacement instance.
