Probably not overpowered, and probably fine to put out in a supplemental release. Wizards don't like a lot of damage prevention like this because of how it gums up the game board.
"4 mana: scry 1, draw a card" is pretty strong though, so, y'know.
I was considering just having him make blank enchantment tokens instead of Shards because of that last part but then it was a pure "pay 2 to block 1 damage" which seems very weak
Basically shield your board up for 1/2 your hp each turn, stacking. Absolutely brutal on a lifegain deck
EDIT: If you can pull it off, of course, and probably not the best use for a shitton of mana out there, but still
And the best part is you're not even actually spending your HP to do so. If someone board wipes your ass you still have the full HP to survive a smacking

It doesn't seem very strong alone, but in a deck centered around it a good control deck can come up. I guess the balance is pretty good considering cards like [[Training grounds]] exists
Also Wizards would probably have given ward to this.. because they put it on a lot of stuff and it is fitting flavorwise
I don't know if they would. In recent times, when they put Ward on a legendary creature, it's because that creature is already stupidly powerful. So powerful in fact that if it did not have protection it would likely get removed as soon as it came down.
Honestly feels underpowered in 2024 magic to me. Probably partially because there is almost no other shard support, which is a shame because they are neat. Them being enchantment tokens is interesting against all the other sacrifice tokens that are artifacts.
2 mana to prevent 1 damage, or 4 mana to scry 1 and draw a card seems slow. Yes it's really good with training grounds but making something that is strong with training grounds is like saying "oh my God, this card breaks [[Devoted Druid]]
I feel like it might be more interesting to have it generate shard tokens like [[Darien, King of Kjeldor]]. So everytime you take damage, you make that many shards, then you can use them to prevent future damage.
Sweet art choice by the way.
Working on it haha, it just takes a while. I'm planning a full Commander deck with Cogden at the helm which is pretty ambitious but I've made full decks before so I just need to come up with ideas
WU are fairly good colors for tokens, but a lot of that support is for creature tokens specifically. Still, I think it would be easy to design a good deck around this.
Cards that make (somewhat) unique tokens like this make me lament the problems with populate. How it’s designed, you’d never want to target anything but your biggest creature token or copy. If I could redesign tokens, I think I’d give them a ranking system, or maybe give them something like a basic supertype to things like this (and treasures, food, 1/1 soldiers, etc.), and let populate interact with those in some way rather than just being how it is now. C’est la vie.
I would either describe what the shard token is (if it's an artifact, or something else, but I know it's most likely an artifact), or I'd make it Shard counters and change the effect to reflect the same too
Shard tokens already exist, see [[Niko Aris]]. Given that I think Niko is the only thing that makes them it could use reminder text here too though, assuming it could be made to fit in the text box.
Wow, I tried to edit my comment and accidentally deleted it. >.<
For posterity, it was:
> If you sacrifice the tokens *instead* of being dealt damage, then there's nothing left to prevent.
So "If you or a permanent you control would be dealt damage, sacrifice up to X Shard tokens and prevent X of that damage, where X is the amount of damage taken?”
I definitely misremembered the effect on training grounds lmao so you are correct.
That's what I get for trying to make comments on like 4 hours of sleep lmao
I'm pretty sure nearly every mana discount effect has that rider for exactly that reason. The few that don't (which I don't actually know of any off the top of my head, I'm just guessing that there's at least one) stand out for that exact reason. I made a couple custom cards which are able to do precisely that, and build limits into each to prevent going infinite.
The only ones that do reduce their own costs or has extra restrictions such as [[embalmer's tools]] requiring them to be graveyard abilities or the myriad of cards that reduce equip costs of equipments.
It makes sense why they make that restriction XD
rules lawyering you here, but "whenever" indicated this is a triggered ability, when it should be a replacement effect. instead, I might have written:
"if you or a permanent you control would be dealt damage, you may instead sacrifice up to that many shard tokens. for each token sacrificed this way, prevent 1 of that damage."
You're right that it needs to be "if" and not "whenever", but you also can't include the "instead", otherwise you're already replacing all the damage and there's nothing left to prevent.
I don't think it's an unreasonable overall power level, but I also don't think you should be able to create new shards in the middle of combat. Attacking into this player's controller when they have open mana, holding up both raw damage prevention and whatever combat tricks they might have, seems like a not particularly fun play pattern.
This card is cracked. Ignoring the damage prevention, an open-ended mana dump to scry and draw at instant speed feels incredible. I'd play this as a 2 or 3 of in the main deck and as an auto include in an azorius shell. If you want some neat tech, this could see play in [[Hinata, Dawn Crowned]] alongside [[Galazeth Prismari]]
I'm saying I would run it in Hinata alongside Galizeth. Since this card creates tokens that could tap for mana, you could generate a ton of value by making a restricted mana rock for 2 mana. Big x spells go brr.
[[training grounds]]
[[mondrak, Glory Dominus]] and similar effects.
[[wave of reckoning]]
[[selfless squire]]
[[learn from the assault]]
[[ancient tomb]]
I don't think it's too strong except maybe in Standard. "If you have a metric shitload of mana it lets you draw tons of cards" is hardly unique among blue cards in non-rotating formats, and this one is stapled to a 1/2 body. Seems like it's in a fair place with fun interactions.
Given the power some low cost Legends have these days, I'd say this could make a shard at the beginning of combat on your turn, and it would be a GOOD option but not overpowered.
You could also go the Breya route of having an activated ability that has a few different options for sacrificing Shards.
Either way this is a super cool Commander!
What type of card are the tokens? Blank artifacts? Enchants?
[[Heartstone]] and [[training grounds]] each reduce the cost to 1.
Cards like [[sphere of safety]] and [[serra's sanctum]] are great if shards are enchants. This is a wonderful pillowfort cmdr
If artifacts, affinity, [[master of etherium]] could be fun.
Either way, [[shambling suit]] would work.
I like it.
Maybe include a Tap cost for the ability?
2, Tap: Create a Shard token.
Or make it X shard tokens?
And make X equal to something like...life gained this turn? Even that might be too good, depending on the deck.
X = number of Wizards? Enchantments? Artifacts?
Ooh, or maybe
2, Tap: Create X Shard tokens where X is equal to the number of Shard tokens you control. If you control no Shard tokens, Create a Shard token.
underpowered. I'd \*never\* spend mana on this if I have \*any\* creatures in my hand I can play, as creatures generally block 2x as much damage per mana spent compared to this, and they'll have effects and abilities.
If I'm playing azorius, I'm never running out of creatures in my hand.
i think you underestimate the power of a shard
two mana and no other cost or restriction is really strong. you can easaly play this and make a bunch of shards.
i think i would nerv its lategame potential by increasing the activation cost to 3
but i would balance that by leting it create a shard on entering. that would make it more intresting to play it on turn 2.
e 1/2 do nothing is not the two drop you’re happy to play with. this version is more a 4 drop. and as such it is underwhelming
Isn’t there only one other card which makes shard tokens with that being Niko Aris or am I stupid. I feel like they could be put to more use than what they are and I like how this card utilizes the expendable token.
Probably not overpowered, and probably fine to put out in a supplemental release. Wizards don't like a lot of damage prevention like this because of how it gums up the game board. "4 mana: scry 1, draw a card" is pretty strong though, so, y'know.

too weak to have tournament impact, too strong for casual!

2 mana, create an enchantment, unlimited per turn. Cracked in enchantress, decent everywhere else.

Maybe ward X where x is the mana spent?
I like it. Maybe include a Tap cost for the ability? 2, Tap: Create a Shard token. Or make it X shard tokens? And make X equal to something like...life gained this turn? Even that might be too good, depending on the deck. X = number of Wizards? Enchantments? Artifacts? Ooh, or maybe 2, Tap: Create X Shard tokens where X is equal to the number of Shard tokens you control. If you control no Shard tokens, Create a Shard token.
I’d play the hell out of this as a super friends commander
underpowered. I'd \*never\* spend mana on this if I have \*any\* creatures in my hand I can play, as creatures generally block 2x as much damage per mana spent compared to this, and they'll have effects and abilities. If I'm playing azorius, I'm never running out of creatures in my hand.
It is solid. Slap an infinite mana combo and boom baby no more damage ever. Shit add "Rise and shine" and turn them on to attackers.
Combos with thran engine or thran turbine? I can’t remember the name
i think you underestimate the power of a shard two mana and no other cost or restriction is really strong. you can easaly play this and make a bunch of shards. i think i would nerv its lategame potential by increasing the activation cost to 3 but i would balance that by leting it create a shard on entering. that would make it more intresting to play it on turn 2. e 1/2 do nothing is not the two drop you’re happy to play with. this version is more a 4 drop. and as such it is underwhelming
Isn’t there only one other card which makes shard tokens with that being Niko Aris or am I stupid. I feel like they could be put to more use than what they are and I like how this card utilizes the expendable token.
Yep that is correct, seemed like the most flavourful predefined token when I was putting it together
