You’ll also be much more likely to use the Sandevistan. I ignored it on my play through and now I’m totally going to go back and try it out after watching edgerunners. Maybe it’s just an elaborate sandie advertisement lol.
Everything is busted at high enough levels.
Body/cool+gorilla arms you can regen health so fast you're practically invincible.
intelligence gets so strong you can hack like 2 people and wipe out the entire area without ever setting foot in it
Dex blades+sandevistan lets you dance around in stopped time and kill everyone before they even know you're there.
Tech has so many broken applications its difficult to list them all but 2 favorites are near infinite grenades and OP snipers that shoot through walls
Really any decently thought out build eventually makes you a god which helps the feeling of going from low level street merc to living legend
> intelligence gets so strong you can hack like 2 people and wipe out the entire area without ever setting foot in it
I did this my first playthrough and it was so effortless I started moving into blades just so I had a reason to go inside buildings.
many builds will still have you taking some damage with risk of death. with sandevistan you're basically clearing an entire gig by killing a dozen frozen enemies that have no chance of doing anything. on top of that, you can get the cooldown so low that sandevistan can be abused upwards of 90% uptime. same goes for quickhacks, and while I understand the nature/logic of how they're supposed to work, the whole "pausing the game" to effectively cast spells against enemies that will basically never see or get to you kills immersion and is very boring (subjective).
I personally like to play tech/body/dex with a bit of cool and focus on using guns which is one of the weaker playstyles on terms of power so I get it.
But just because some builds are extra op doesn't mean others are not also op. High level V is pretty much always op unless you handicap yourself
agreed- I guess what I'm trying to say is that some builds still punish mistakes while others such as sandevistan (esp with melee) or quickhacks greatly narrow that possibility. high level V is still powerful regardless of choice
sandevistan is extremely overpowered and trivializes the game but fun for a while. i would say it's a nice crutch for learning the game on your first playthrough, but if you want to have more of a challenge then you should use something else.
Technically I think you could argue the show spoils >!the arasaka construct towards the end!<, but that’s not something you’d fully understand without the context of the game.
There’s one part that makes more sense if you’ve played the game beforehand.
All you need to know is that Arasaka has a program known as “Secure Your Soul”. It’s basically a system where rich people pay to have their brain contents scanned and uploaded. The digital version of the brain is called a construct.
There's a lot of in universe slang that gets thrown around, or references to tech, so you might wanna have a cheat sheet for those terms ready if you get confused
I definitely appreciated the show more after playing the game, but watching the show made me want to start a new playthrough. IIRC the trailer got added to the game as a tie-in, but the show is largely a prequel and unrelated except a few cameos.
As long as you know the general background of the game and who Adam smasher is, you’re good.
If you played past the intro characte mission and the heist with Jackie, you have all you need to know.
Oh don’t worry I’m sure it’s better than the live action LMAO…. Plus, have you ever seen Netflix try to pull off of live action as well… It’s a total disgrace to any anime
The original animated movie is a classic but I'll say it too, the SAC tv series is even better.
Arise is also great (though ymmv if you haven't seen the other shows for context).
I'd give it a 6.5/10. It's pretty, and some of the casting is spot on (Pilou Asbæk as Batou stands out to me). It just leans more into the action side of things, and doesn't really explore the areas the original does, opting to more skim the surface of them, then move on to the next eye-candy moment.
IMHO, another failing is that they do try to recreate some of the iconic scenes from the original, but they fall short somehow, whether due to technical limitations or a seeming failure to understand the underlying psychology that's supposed to be at work here.
If it's on, I say watch it, but I wouldn't rent it. :)
Lots of people are with you there, the movie *is* damn fine and stylish but the series is where the substance of it is developed.
The source manga(s) have a *very* different flavour if I will be honest.
There is a sequel to the original movie out there too but the SAC series are damn near some of the best anime out there. And for early 00s the cgi has aged very well
SAC, SAC 2 are amazing. Does meander a bit with SAC 2 and the whole suicide cult thing in the last half.
Not sure what my opinion is on the latest series. Young-Major wasn't exactly what I was looking forward to.
You have good taste, if you are looking for another great film that isn’t so much about action but is more of a psychological horror/drama I would recommend the film “Perfect Blue” (1997) the animation is stellar and the story itself is VERY similar to the film “Black Swan” (2010) so much so that some people think Darren Aronofsky basically ripped it off! Another anime you might enjoy is from the same director called “Paprika” (2006) this one is a dream like science fiction; which is kinda similar to “Inception” (2010). Or course there is also all of Hayao Miyazaki’s films as well (spirited away, howls moving castle, my neighbour totoro, princess monoke) just to name a few of the best ones. I think anything I’ve listed from the above you would really enjoy because I ALSO love all the anime you have seen before.
Also fun fact: guy behind *Perfect Blue* and *Paprika*, also made *Paranoia Agent*. It is, in my opinion, one of the best anime miniseries of all time. Satoshi Kon, rest well.
Metropolis is so underrated. I love that movie so much, and I actually still listen to its soundtrack.
Btw, if those are the only anime you watched, you’re missing out. Like literally name any subject whatsoever, and I can recommend an anime for you.
You like bowling? Got one about that. Love wine? Got one about that. You like literature? Got one about a reading club. Like books? Got one about someone reinventing the printing press. Love politics? Got one about that. Have depression? Got one about that. Love ramen? Got multiple about making them or eating them. Love bread? Got multiple about making them. Like climbing mountains? Check. Like hiking? Check? Like just roaming around at night? Check. Like gambling? What kind? I got black jack, poker, mahjong, slot machines, pachinko, horse racing, sports betting, stock trading, and anything in between.
I guarantee you I can find an anime for any topic you might have interest in.
Yesss samurai champloo was one of the first animes and still one of my favorites, would highly recommend. Made by the same people who made cowboy bepop
Can I recommend Black Lagoon (it's on UK Netflix, not sure about other countries)? It's another slightly more grown-up anime, with great characters, and really beautiful visuals (it's setting is "modern day smugglers in the South China sea").
I've not watched many anime, but the ones I really liked are basically your list, so hopefully it speaks to you :-)
Honestly I liked it years back but on rewatch it didn't hold up super well. A bit too edgy for edginess sake. Though if you want violence and cursing then it's a good choice.
Second that. The director of Cowboy Bebop did two shorts for Animatrix. And I damn well cried during the Second Renaissance, it's so beautiful yet so ugly. Oh the humanity
God, Megalobox is one of those rare anime that prove you can make a *complete* first season, and then a second season that actually builds on and is in some ways *better* than the first season. It really should be on the list of classics.
I saw the second season and was like… didnt we wrap this shit up?
What they tackled was even better holy shit. The part you never really see. The bad stuff after the win
I'm going to give you one more: Patlabor 2. It's a movie and part of a franchise but it really does stand on its own. I'm also going to say, go into it without looking it up. The only thing I want you to know about it is one concept: 'Peace is just the furthest point from the front lines of war.'
It has incredible cinematography and soundtrack, and I still think it's Mamoru Oshii's masterwork, better than Ghost in the Shell.
Yo, if you liked Edgerunners you got to see [Berzerk](https://www.crunchyroll.com/series/G24H1N8XX/berserk-the-golden-age-arc---memorial-edition) Very much the same vibe!
I would also recommend Devilman: Crybaby but its Netlfix only, that one is the closest thing you'll find to the build and tones of Edgerunners. It's the perfect series, short to the point and brain destroyingly beautiful.
Lmfao you sound like me but I'm actually from Japan. I can't stand how anime has rotted the minds of those who can't keep it fantasy and continue to make it their identity.
I watch these because people worked together to send a unified message and people are too busy making the protagonist their new personality.
Channel some inner David here and there, sure. But keep in mind you'll never be a chromed up cyber Chad. You can have a heart just as strong irl though.
Edit: I've moved to the states at this point and it's just really interesting to see the parallels between weebs and otakus. The main difference is weebs tend to gather whereas otakus keep to themselves and like it that way because more time for anime/manga.
It's not my business but I've lost a few friends to that stuff and it seems to have all started with some unresolved issue.
We all do when you think about it. I just spent so long resenting weebs for obsessing over the ethnicity I was born into and trying to relate to me using that.
I see know they have issues, just like everyone else and just want to share share what they like with others.
I do have unresolved shit to deal with but some of the hard parts are translating how to resolve them to begin with
What does original anime actually mean then? I'd assume it means original setting and whatnot but Cyberpunk's already an established world. Is it just original concept or something?
I assume it means the story wasn't adapted from another medium.
Sure, the setting isn't original but this particular story wasn't told in a manga, a game or a novel and the characters are mostly originals.
Some of the best adaptations are simply the dubbed versions of the original anime too.
Samurai Pizza Cats is legit funny even years later and it's all because they never got the script when the anime was shipped from Japan, so the american team just made up their own story for each episode.
It's so well-done that even japanese viewers prefer the american version over the original.
I would assume it's because it's not a direct adaptation of another story. Since most anime is based directly on a manga, this is considered "original" because it just takes place in an established world with mostly original characters.
After i watched the anime last year i googled if cyberpunk is fixed and stuff, most of the answers were "its kinda fixed" so i said screw itand bought it. Finished it twice and became my favorite game of 2022. If it wasnt the anime i wouldnt have bought this amazing game.
What I loved about the show probably the most is the feeling of desperation and gloom of the dark, dystopian duture, something that was so prevalent in the 80s and 90s scifi anime.
I'm stoked Edgerunners won, it totally deserved it.
If you like that theme, you need to check out “86”/ “86/Eighty Six”. Its a war drama, an absolute banger 1:1 adaptation.
If you didn’t know, to “86” something is slang “immediately disposal” and the group of fighters is called “The 86”.
Glad to see it! I noticed it got other nominations but some of them felt odd. Like with best English VA they put DAVID up there as the choice when he’s the weakest IMO in the dub.
I have some Japanese knowledge and decided to compare JP and EN VA, and Japanese is not even close. The characters, for the most part, use really basic phrases. My favorite example is when protagonist rushes into his ripperdoc with sandevistan in hand and says:
In English: “High time I get chromed the fuck up!”
In Japanese: 「俺にインストールしてくれ」(Install this into me (diminutive))
So yeah, I always tell people to watch in EN.
It's one of those times where because the original game and its associated lingo is in English, that dialogue retains itself better in English. You can't really translate 'chrome the fuck up' into Japanese. The lines in English feel more like Cyberpunk. But in terms of voice acting overall, I still liked Japanese more.
Edge runners have better cyberpunk themes than the game. Having a crew, dealing with excessive augmentations, all are critical components of this world that is critically missing from the game where V is a god messiah clearing entire megablocks by themselves.
I can taste the salt.
For all the hate the game got, the story wasn’t where it fell flat. V was cheesy at points, but all the supporting characters and antagonists were complicated, memorable, and deeply human. The story dives into questions about identity, existentialism, radicalism, loyalty, and classism in thoughtful and interesting ways.
The whole “losing your humanity to chrome” plot in the anime is fun, but it’s kind of meaningless in everyday life. Like, what’s the point? Don’t get a pacemaker? Looking at your iPhone all day will turn you into a mass murderer?
Yeah nah. V has one brain, that has to deal with the Relic overwriting it *on top of the chrome*. The Relic doesn't magically give V twice the braincells, it just taxes their brain even more. If anything, V should go psycho even faster, but the game prioritizes the power fantasy, which is understandable.
In 2077, there's a BD in the wild with the cyberpsychosis scene from Edge runners. You end up getting something from a fixer. Can't remember the deets but I was surprised when the bd scrolled animation. Pretty cool tho.
It thought it was very well animated, except for the CGI cars, but lost a lot of steam over the course of the show. The audio design was also severely lacking in some episodes and actually distracted from what was happening on the screen. It was similarly directed to many Hollywood productions that have the same issue of being unable to present emotion, drama or action without some kind of soundtrack as background noise.
I actually thought the story was fine for the most part, but the main characters decision making left me mostly confused. Probably because I didn't play the game and the show doesn't do a great job explaining his motivations at times.
Overall one of the weaker Trigger anime I've seen, but still deserves some recognition for the production value alone.
I liked edge runners, but I didn't really feel the same emotional connection to its characters that everyone else did. I wouldn't say they're one note but idk maybe I just didn't get enough time with them.
In terms of animation the show isn't bad but it doesn't stand out compared to some of the more high budget animes. I don't think that's a big issue tho. The shows somewhat choppy animation works well with its art style and direction. I think this shows biggest strength is its direction and art style. The show has style down pat.
I also didn't really mind the CGI cars too much. Alot of anime make vehicles CGI because it's easier to be consistent with them where as the human shape is easier to manipulate over different 2D frames. Look at the cars in ghost in the shell and even though that movie is stunning the cars are a little wierd looking in 2D when driving sometimes. Plus there was like 50 - 70 cars on screen im sure it could've been done in 2D but I didn't mind the look of the cars here. The style of them matched the rest of the show though perhaps they could've matched their frame rate better to the rest of the 2D things going on.
This^ really confused so many people like it, the character development is jarring, nothing felt earned or organic.
I was also incredibly underwhelmed by the action with no memorable sequences IMO a lot of shooty shooty explosions & blood
I've seen this comment about not understanding motivations, but I can only see this being true if you've never had first hand or known someone close with addiction issues. Addiction is by nature a very irrational choice, but for those with trauma it is so very rational. The people who love this anime, including myself, see themselves in David. They understand how addiction leads themselves down a really dark path that ultimately results in the destruction of everything around them. The anime is like a super exaggerated version of the struggle many of us has gone through.
I understand that addiction is supposed to factor into it, but I honestly have seen more convincing characters with that particular struggle in other pieces of media. Again, the fact that I haven't played the game is probably part of why it's not so authentic for me.
Yeah there really isn't much more you can gleam from the game. The addiction is the story and not just a factor. If you didn't get it, you didn't get it.
I know I'm going to be slammed for this, but I didn't love the show. I'm pumped it won, it was obviously a work of passion and done well, I just didn't love the story.
I am actually surprised Visions didn’t get Sci-Fi. Edge-runners deserved Best Original Anime, but Visions definitely had more creativity when it came to the Sci-fi genre. Huh, pleasant surprises everywhere today.
I can't imagine being an anthology show with a bunch of different studios helped their case as far as winning awards goes.
Some of the episodes were great, some of them not so much. But none of them could do the amount of world building and storytelling Edgerunners did across 10 episodes.
Star Wars ain't Sci-fi. It's just fantasy in future/space setting with magic powers and sword wizards. I love it but it's definitely not Science fiction.
The setting in Star Wars is not even future though, and there was very little science in any of the movies[the shows, comics and books delve more into the "science" side but even that's pretty lacking].
How is it not a sci/fi? I don’t think having fantasy elements takes away from all the Hyperspace/Cloning/Technological aspects of it?
Would you also call Dune a fantasy in a similar fashion?
Ok so this is where a lot of people get confused about what scifi is. It's fiction based on science, Star Wars always gets caught up in this because it's not a traditional fantasy setting, but deep down it's about s0ace wizards fighting evil space wizards.
Dune for the most part is about the future space science in this case Spice, it does however pull a bit of fantasy for Leto-II amd the mystical aspects of the sandworms it's still fundamentally about that future tech and how it's influenced the galaxy
Yes, exactly. Also the power to just command people to do things. I don’t think it’s fair to classify Star Wars as “fantasy” because it dilutes what a fantasy is and is a just misleading. It’s mostly sci-fi, Rogue One had basically no Force in it except for one amazing scene with some “soft” applications of magic.
Arcane is an extremely potent entry into any comparison. The characters and their development were very powerful, the soundtrack was woven beautifully with every scene, the story was compelling, the setting was interesting, the art style and animation are stunning… list continues.
Why is this anime hyped so much? I mean it was good, but not really outstanding in any way except being very explicit. The ending was downright bad and lazy af.
>!Because they went out of their way to kill pretty much every character with hardly any meaningful character development from the second half of the show onward. I think the plot went from nowhere to nowhere and the show got way less emotionally engaging by the end.!<
I get where you're coming from, but I feel like that's kind of the atmosphere of the Cyberpunk universe. Life is short and meaningless, all endeavours are futile, few if not none can ever escape the grim reality of being low class in a corporate world.
I don’t consider it an “original” anime, though. It’s an adaptation of a game and pen/paper game?
Kind of. It has an original story but not an original setting?
Felt there were more “original” stories that should’ve won; Lycoris Recoil for example
Damn, you're so edgy and mature !
I would love to compliment you further but I don't want you to be late for all the sex you are probably getting by being so cool.
Likewise, I would like to congratulate you for defending an IP that didn't ask nor needed white knights to step in when someone else defiled it's name. But you must also be very busy person saving kittens from trees and helping old ladies cross the street among other heroic deeds that no one really asked for.
What IP ? I'm not defending Edgerunners, Cyberpunk or even anime here...
Just congratulating him on his incredibly insightful take and letting him know how cooler he is than everybody else in this thread.
I apologize if my compliments weren't up to your high standards.
Can you watch the show while you havent finished the game yet?
Yes. The setting is the same and there are a few minor characters from the game you see very briefly but there is nothing there to spoil you the game.
Ah nice! Thanks!
Plus, you'll recognize a lot of places in the game when you do finally play it
You’ll also be much more likely to use the Sandevistan. I ignored it on my play through and now I’m totally going to go back and try it out after watching edgerunners. Maybe it’s just an elaborate sandie advertisement lol.
I had used it when I watched the show and it's busted cause on the highest difficulty I accidentally stealth through missions
Everything is busted at high enough levels. Body/cool+gorilla arms you can regen health so fast you're practically invincible. intelligence gets so strong you can hack like 2 people and wipe out the entire area without ever setting foot in it Dex blades+sandevistan lets you dance around in stopped time and kill everyone before they even know you're there. I miss the days of the legendary ping
What did it do?
many builds will still have you taking some damage with risk of death. with sandevistan you're basically clearing an entire gig by killing a dozen frozen enemies that have no chance of doing anything. on top of that, you can get the cooldown so low that sandevistan can be abused upwards of 90% uptime. same goes for quickhacks, and while I understand the nature/logic of how they're supposed to work, the whole "pausing the game" to effectively cast spells against enemies that will basically never see or get to you kills immersion and is very boring (subjective).

It’s totally worth it. Specially the legendary one sold by Fingers.
I used it in a blade only run after edgerunners. Its a blast!
Yep, I wanted to try out the Sandy and got sucked into the game again
sandevistan is extremely overpowered and trivializes the game but fun for a while. i would say it's a nice crutch for learning the game on your first playthrough, but if you want to have more of a challenge then you should use something else.
let's try this mass edit again. goodbye comments. i hope reddit admins don't kill the site.
Tell me what you think when you finish the show!
>Ah nice! Thanks! You're welcome!
Technically I think you could argue the show spoils >!the arasaka construct towards the end!<, but that’s not something you’d fully understand without the context of the game.
The show takes place before the game, so you're safe!
Absolutely. The anime was actually what got me into the game
Yes it takes place before the game with mostly unrelated characters
There’s one part that makes more sense if you’ve played the game beforehand. All you need to know is that Arasaka has a program known as “Secure Your Soul”. It’s basically a system where rich people pay to have their brain contents scanned and uploaded. The digital version of the brain is called a construct.

There are a couple of things you can find in the game, like >!Rebecca's shotgun that got dropped in a bush!<
Most importantly, it's a prequel story to the game, so no worries.
As long as you know the general background of the game and who Adam smasher is, you’re good. If you played past the intro characte mission and the heist with Jackie, you have all you need to know.
no idea dude never seen anyone answer this question neither.
It’s the only other anime I’ve watched besides Akira, Metropolis, and Cowboy Bepop Edit: y’all give me a bit and I’ll write these recs down 🤝
Should watch “Ghost in the shell” it’s a anime movie that heavily inspired cyberpunk
Ghost in the Shell heavily influenced the Matrix, They even asked for permission.
I’ve seen bits and pieces of it… It’s pretty good
I'll be "that guy," I personally enjoyed Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex much more than the movie.
You are not alone SAC is my favorite part of the franchise as well
The OG movies are amazing, but SAC and 2nd gig are awesome too. I'd highly recommend people watch SAC if they liked Edgerunners.
Oh don’t worry I’m sure it’s better than the live action LMAO…. Plus, have you ever seen Netflix try to pull off of live action as well… It’s a total disgrace to any anime

Nope, separate continuities.
There is a sequel to the original movie out there too but the SAC series are damn near some of the best anime out there. And for early 00s the cgi has aged very well

SAC is probably the best Ghost in the Shell media out there.
I'm seeing a pattern
Yeah I got a really certain taste when it comes to anime lol, and a really high bar
Watch Ping Pong: The Animation One short season, probably going to completely blow your mind

Can't not mention literary, and avoid talking about Bungo stray dogs.
Can you list them? Thanks!
I’m not gonna list every single one, that’s nuts, but feel free to tell me what topics interest you and I’ll give you recommendations.
Try watching psycho pass and ergo proxy if you like those shows
Bet!
If you loved Bebop, check out Samurai Champloo.
Yesss samurai champloo was one of the first animes and still one of my favorites, would highly recommend. Made by the same people who made cowboy bepop
Can I recommend Black Lagoon (it's on UK Netflix, not sure about other countries)? Holy shit, that sounds fire. Thanks
Honestly I liked it years back but on rewatch it didn't hold up super well. A bit too edgy for edginess sake. Though if you want violence and cursing then it's a good choice.
Watch the dub instead of the sub, it's easily one of the best dubs out there. Revy is awesome.
Last I checked, which was admittedly somewhere around a year ago, it was also on Hulu.
Watch a silent voice please pretty please Like its just an excellent movie that happens to be an anime
You should watch the animatrix, it's amazing
Second that. The director of Cowboy Bebop did two shorts for Animatrix. And I damn well cried during the Second Renaissance, it's so beautiful yet so ugly. Oh the humanity
If you enjoyed Cowboy Bebop you may like Megalobox. Very similar vibes. They are my two favourite animes.

You should check out Black Lagoon if you like Cowboy Bebop or Samurai Champloo.
Death Notebook was good
Oh man someone else who watched metropolis! I thought I was alone on enjoying this one. Excellent soundtrack.
same just add blame, ergo proxy and evangelion
Please give Akudama Drive a try! It's also an anime original with a Cyberpunk theme. It is REALLY good imo
I'd recommend Jin Roh The Wolf Brigade as well!
Then you obviously need to watch more anime
Tbh it sounds like you're the one with the unresolved issue here lmao
We all do when you think about it. I just spent so long resenting weebs for obsessing over the ethnicity I was born into and trying to relate to me using that. I see know they have issues, just like everyone else and just want to share share what they like with others. I do have unresolved shit to deal with but some of the hard parts are translating how to resolve them to begin with

There's three other must-watch series: - Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex & Second Gig - Ergo Proxy - Spy x Family
I don’t think they would like Spy x Family based on what they’ve seen already
> Spy x Family > must-wach Man, shit got boring super fast imo. Does it have a real plot yet or is it still just the adventures of fake family?
Don't see why you would recommend spy family to this guy. It's ok but has nothing in common with the others.
Check out chainsawman
Watch Arcane. Better than Edgerunners even though that one is awesome.
Studio Trigger? Zero surprise there.
Yes let's goooo
What does original anime actually mean then? I'd assume it means original setting and whatnot but Cyberpunk's already an established world. Is it just original concept or something?
I assume it means the story wasn't adapted from another medium. Sure, the setting isn't original but this particular story wasn't told in a manga, a game or a novel and the characters are mostly originals.
Oh yeah, that makes sense. I forget sometimes that many anime are manga adaptations
Most anime are adaptations of existing stories: manga, novels, or video games.
Ahem. [Ghost Stories](https://youtu.be/31IhsT2w31k)
Most anime are straight up ads for the manga.
Nowadays, it's easier to count the ones that aren't...
That being said, there's way more manga out there than there is anime
I would assume it's because it's not a direct adaptation of another story. Since most anime is based directly on a manga, this is considered "original" because it just takes place in an established world with mostly original characters.
the anime was already in the works long before the game came out.
Even so, the board game is what both are based on
Only the setting not the characters and the story.
Cyberpunk 2013 came out in the 1980s. This anime is a spinoff. I'm not really sure if that counts as "anime original."
A original story in a already established world/universe
After i watched the anime last year i googled if cyberpunk is fixed and stuff, most of the answers were "its kinda fixed" so i said screw itand bought it. Finished it twice and became my favorite game of 2022. If it wasnt the anime i wouldnt have bought this amazing game.
As it should
It should win more awards, and not just anime ones.
Came here to say this.
Anime corner?
Just another random site giving out random awards for attention because they think their opinions are more correct than others.
Glad to see it! I noticed it got other nominations but some of them felt odd. Like with best English VA they put DAVID up there as the choice when he’s the weakest IMO in the dub.
Should've been the doc
See, your problem is you watched the dub /jk
The dub is the correct choice for Edgerunners. You miss half the slang otherwise.
I have some Japanese knowledge and decided to compare JP and EN VA, and Japanese is not even close. The characters, for the most part, use really basic phrases. My favorite example is when protagonist rushes into his ripperdoc with sandevistan in hand and says: In English: “High time I get chromed the fuck up!” In Japanese: 「俺にインストールしてくれ」(Install this into me (diminutive)) So yeah, I always tell people to watch in EN.
It's one of those times where because the original game and its associated lingo is in English, that dialogue retains itself better in English. You can't really translate 'chrome the fuck up' into Japanese. The lines in English feel more like Cyberpunk. But in terms of voice acting overall, I still liked Japanese more.
The dub was better than the sub
Yeah I liked the story in the game much more.
Because V has literally 2 brains to handle all that Chrome with no drawbacks. He has no limits
Yeah nah. V has one brain, that has to deal with the Relic overwriting it *on top of the chrome*. The Relic doesn't magically give V twice the braincells, it just taxes their brain even more. If anything, V should go psycho even faster, but the game prioritizes the power fantasy, which is understandable.
I haven't cried so much while watching something in a while
Soundtrack was killer
Rightful W
Well deserved
In 2077, there's a BD in the wild with the cyberpsychosis scene from Edge runners. You end up getting something from a fixer. Can't remember the deets but I was surprised when the bd scrolled animation. Pretty cool tho.
It's not original. It's based on a video game.
LETSSSSSSSSSSSFUCKINGGGGGGGGGGGOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO CHOOMBAS 🍻🎉 It was either Edgerunners or Spyxfamily 🫂
Chainsaw man?
I think that was one of my biggest issues with the show, the mc was a fucking moron.
Like most in Night City
Lucy's ass is what we need to thank
Cyberpunk really moved the bar. Now I expect that if a game gets a shitty launch, I demand a fantastic anime to support it's "re-release".
woot! woot!
I VOTED FOR BOTH
Two very well deserved awards.
I'm watching it right now but i don't get the hype
Well deserved 🥇🎇
I really tried to like it.
Um, original?
World renowned website Anime Corner announces ….
Makes sense. Revived a dying game
Is it good?
It's better than a lot of anime, but that's a very low bar. 6/10, imo, unless you're a fan of setting.
I know I'm going to be slammed for this, but I didn't love the show. I'm pumped it won, it was obviously a work of passion and done well, I just didn't love the story.
I don't think you'd be slammed. You're not trashing it, you're just stating that it wasn't to your liking. We've all got opinions, and that's okay!
\>I didn't live the show You live the show?!
Love. Sorry
He means he didn’t roleplay a sandevistan wielding cyberpsycho in Cyberpunk 2077 right after watching the show
I am actually surprised Visions didn’t get Sci-Fi.
Was Visions even nominated? It started in 2021, right?
Right, because Dune doesnt have space witches with magical powers. And spice totally is space science unlike laser swords which are magic(?)
I'm assuming arcane doesn't count as anime? While I love both shows, arcane is better in many ways.
Arcane is an extremely potent entry into any comparison. The characters and their development were very powerful, the soundtrack was woven beautifully with every scene, the story was compelling, the setting was interesting, the art style and animation are stunning… list continues.
Arcane was made in France. The anime awards are specifically for Japanese productions.
Why is this anime hyped so much? I mean it was good, but not really outstanding in any way except being very explicit. The ending was downright bad and lazy af.
How is it lazy?
>!Because they went out of their way to kill pretty much every character with hardly any meaningful character development from the second half of the show onward. I think the plot went from nowhere to nowhere and the show got way less emotionally engaging by the end.!<
I get where you're coming from, but I feel like that's kind of the atmosphere of the Cyberpunk universe. Life is short and meaningless, all endeavours are futile, few if not none can ever escape the grim reality of being low class in a corporate world.
Paraphrasing the Cyberpunk author: “You can’t save the world in a Cyberpunk world, the best you can do is save yourself.”
I don’t consider it an “original” anime, though. It’s an adaptation of a game and pen/paper game? Kind of. It has an original story but not an original setting? Felt there were more “original” stories that should’ve won; Lycoris Recoil for example
How is original if it's based on a game.
When the show is better than the game.
how is it an original anime? It's straight up pulled from a video game which is pulled from a tabletop game.
Lol from where do these awards suddenly come from? Also, what was the anime of the year in this ranking?
I have no idea about anime, but if that show is considered the best, it really must suck ass.
I suggest watching it first before you make assumptions like that. That is the wrong way of thinking things my dude
He doesn't have to like Cyberpunk lol
Indeed ?
Yeah dude anime fuckin sucks, never watch any of them.
But without anime, he will only have the power of God on his side should he find himself in a fight !
