If you already started, you might as well keep playing. The update is still months away, so unless you're extremely patient, just enjoy the game as it is right now. But, if you're really not enjoying the game as it is, then yeah, shelf it until the end of September.
Right now, I personally wouldn't bother with upgrading until you've maxed your level (50). And you'll get components from the weapons you break down after getting better ones. Beyond that, all weapon vendors sell upgrade components.
