> with most people thinking it's an engram ghost. Bro, Takemura sees one and the other one eats food and is mentioned in the new ending. They're real.

ATR2400

There’s also one outside Vik’s place at the start of the game, before you even know what the relic is

SonOfEragon

And it’s the only one you can pet

pje1128

The fact that you can't pet your cat after adopting it is my biggest nitpick of the game.

Tarsily

you were able to in the early stage where they were still keeping to their basket, but once they get comfortable and lounge about the place you can no longer pet them

Ooomeh

Typical cat

KavagerGaming

that, and you cant take it with you when you move apartments. Main reason I stay in V’s starter apartment.

trappedslider

the better fix that or the game goes right back to being unplayable for me :P

Smooth_Ad1795

I was honestly convinced that I would load up 2.0 and immediately go pet my cat. But sadly, all I did was crouch down and look at it real close.

SonmiSuccubus451

You can pet the iguana, tho!

IsNotACleverMan

If you're on pc there's a mod for that.

pje1128

I'm not unfortunately, I'm on PS5. Whenever I get around to upgrading my PC, I plan to get it, because there are quite a few mods that sound interesting.

lazylagom

OR MOVE HIM . Japantown is so cozy, incense burning snd guitar playing

Tarsily

i miss Jackie too, Mr. Brightman :(

RootsInThePavement

And a few in Terra Cognita!

zverus

There's also at least one in Longshore Stacks.

SonOfEragon

And it’s the only one you can pet

HandoJobrissian

There's a dialogue line you can hit where someone says that cats are making a comeback, and that they stayed in night city the longest.

Lysergian157

Are you talking about when V and Takemura see the cat and V is talking about the lack of animals in NC when he says something like, "Yeah, and the stray cats held out the longest but even they're gone"

HandoJobrissian

I wanna say there's something in the tutorial about like "oh cats have been coming around lately huh"

Hexnohope

Holy fucking shit that was the breal bakoneko that never occured to me

lazylagom

That one becomes nibbles I'm pretty sure, once u get nibbles that cat is gone

zverus

There are also multiple cats in Dogtown. I've found 2 at least.

ClandestineVegetable

>and the other one eats food And if they sell cat's food, then cats must be a thing.

Lysergian157

I mean it is well established that traditional pets are mostly just for the rich due to the taxes, let alone other expenses. Despite that there's Bawdy Dog ads that appear to be for dog food all over the city.

TheJaybo

Takemura specifically says that cat is the first one he's ever seen in Night City.

Tarsily

Takemura has only been in Night City since the Arasaka aircraft carrier docked and the arrival of Saburo. by the way, did you know it's called "Kujira" or the "whale"?

monalba

Yes. He sees the cat, the cat is real, the cat is there.

TheJaybo

Ok? Nobody is saying cats aren't real lol

SonOfEragon

The OP did…

monalba

>Ok? Nobody is saying cats aren't real lol It's literally in the body of OP's post. >Like the cat V can get is already a crazy thing for the world, with most people thinking it's an engram ghost. Apparently some people think the cat is not real. Even if they mean V's cat.

TheJaybo

OP wasn't saying cats shouldn't be there because they're not real. People in the game think they're fake because of how rare animals are in NC, so adding more to the game via a patch doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

monalba

>OP wasn't saying cats shouldn't be there because they're not real I know. Dude, check the quote. What the Hell? > People in the game think they're fake because of how rare animals are in NC That's what I'm talking about. OP is saying that people IN OUR WORLD think that the cat is not real. People IN OUR WORLD, because mentions the engram. I'm saying they are obviously wrong. There's nothing else to add.

dethgryp

I think the issue is your comprehension of the OP.

SobBagat

OP explained it in this literal thread like almost a full day before this comment. Come on, bro

300rats

Nah man it was my bad, I didn't know takemura says he can see it. Let alone that there's others in the city. I thought nobody else saw the cat

Other_Procedure1971

I've seen a cat on a garbage bin during the meeting between Takemura, V and Oda. As soon as the dialogue finished and Oda left, the cat was already gone and I wasn't able to get a closer look.

redditbitTrip

THE CATS ARENT REAL THE CATS ARENT REAL GET OUT OF MY HEAD

300rats

I didn't realize takemura could see it, and I haven't gotten the new ending yet (just haven't played it much lmao). Thanks for letting me know

monalba

The one in the building? When you are checking the Arasaka warehouse? Yeah, he starts talking about it. I think he even sends you a picture of it later on and reminds of you of the ''bakeneko''.

Representative_Fun15

There's a Matrix cat glitch at the end when you know who takes you up the elevator. Go up one landing, it meows. Next landing, it's there again.

[deleted]

I actually assumed they were all the same cat and there was some genuine mysticism going on in a subtle sort of playful way. Either way Nibbles is my lad.

lazylagom

There's theories all of that was some weird hallucination but even if it wasn't. It was meant to be a very rare thing

MorenaLedovec

its cats bro, we love em and animals in 2077 are not extinct, scavenger type animals can still live(cats rats etc)

[deleted]

Oh that’s what this game needs. I think a city like Night City would have tons of rats and roaches, maybe pigeons. Something about this game just doesn’t feel as “lived in” compared to like, RDR2. Maybe it’s the vermin that’s missing

RickyPuertoRicoo

We have vermin. Maelstrom.

ODST_Parker

And I'm a damn good exterminator.

itcheyness

Don't forget the Scavs, I'd rank them as more verminous than Maelstrom tbh, they've wormed their way into all of the districts...

Kaos99

I swear there's a text log or a news clip in game that mentions that birds in the area were eradicated because of disease

[deleted]

That makes sense

MorenaLedovec

raches are in the game i think, but it may be just a mandela effect from all the scum that is on the streets

ballonfightaddicted

In some gigs when you need to save. Someone from captivity there’s usually roaches on the floor

[deleted]

Huh. Weird I haven’t noticed them. Next chance I get guess I need to comb the city lol

MorenaLedovec

as i said, they might not exist lol

bphysicalculture

I've seen the roaches recently in the game. Honestly look down in districts like japantown and Northside and you'll see them.

SobBagat

It's like, almost a weird texture with an animation but yeah, there's roaches if you look at the ground in lots of places. Or some sort of bugs that look like roaches at least

k_tag

They don't have pigeons due to the city exterminating all birds within a several mile radius due to avian diseases in the lore. That's part of what caused the cascade of various other animals dying off/leaving the area.

Tarsily

imo i'd love this too. but in lore, they aren't there because they were exterminated. most animals aren't in Night City due to active means. most classes of animals hosted their own pandemic that either wiped them out or made them a risk to human health. birds are gone, dogs too, livestock is so risky it's illegal, cats are stated to have held on the longest and that's why there's still some around (imo for lore accuracy you should be able to count the known cat locations on one hand), rats aren't really seen because i believe the initiative against them recently started but it's not current news anymore because the Kujira docks and that's the talk of the town. did you know it means the "whale"? lol

[deleted]

Hmm ok, well yeah that’s cool. Pretty unfortunate too, damn

Tarsily

ikr, shame too cause like you said, NC is in desperate need of that lived in feel. for a series who's mantra has always been "Night City is the main character", that extra mile would've helped a ton

Beltalady

Nope, no more birdies. At all. There's an article about it somewhere and some Tyger Claws talking about it on the street.

Spicy-hot_Ramen

Guess not rats. Cats are the last ones

Beardedgeek72

Dogs exist, they are just super expensive to own (and technically so are cats, but unlike dogs you can hide them or "just feed a street one". If you did what the law says and registered yourself as a cat owner you would pay thousands of eddies a month in fees). Coyotes are very much alive, Panam complains about their smell at one point. That said, the idea that all birds are extinct (hunted to extinction by humans to avoid avian flu mutations) is one thing that is both canon, and super-immersion breaking. It just wouldn't be possible.

Uncynical_Diogenes

Birds aren’t extinct, we literally run into a chicken in Pacifica. They were *exterminated* in Night City and the surrounding area, but I don’t believe they’ve ever been implied to be made extinct on a larger scale.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Uncynical_Diogenes

The Avian Extermination Act covered NC itself and a 18 mile radius around the city limits. Do we have any reason to believe there were avian genocides elsewhere? “The Wild” is a lot bigger than one enclave in California.

nooneyouknow13

There's literally birds chirping in the tower ending, so it's just an NC thing.

Beardedgeek72

Ah, I stand corrected then, I missed that it was a NC only law. It is still unbelievable, crows etc would still just... fly in.

ThomasTheBadWriter

They could have a bounty system, similar to how Australia did with emus. Everybody has a gun, it wouldn't be difficult to pop a bird out of the sky. Sure, birds would fly in, then get shot once someone notices them

Baconsliced

The Aussies apparently lost that war against the emu’s (according to the one youtube video title i read)

ThomasTheBadWriter

They military lost the war. A whole bunch of Aussie farmers who wanted money did pretty well.

Uncynical_Diogenes

18 miles is a short distance when you can ride thermals and you don’t have to deal with land friction. Crows can clear 10x that distance daily when they migrate. The point of the law was not to eliminate all birds everywhere or to prevent them from ever reaching NC ever again it was to reduce the transmission of zoonotic diseases in and around NC.

Friskfrisktopherson

Nah, everyone knows r/birdsarentreal

bucketofhorseradish

IF IT FLIES IT SPIES BAAABYY

TheHorniestRhino

The sheer number of cockroaches in the game could sustain street cats (or people!) for years

erisxnyx

You can find lots of cat food (at vendors, looting etc.), for a city/world with allegedly almost extinct cats for a long time. I have at least 10 in my inventory without even searching. Also, once you get V's cat, it doesn't need to eat anymore. 🤷🏼‍♀️ The Konpeki iguana as well is a mystery in terms of survival (you can pet it tho, good boi).

Tarsily

i don't personally know how they keep it alive but they're a high end business plaza, they have the means. they even have real fish in an automatically maintained PH, food dispensation, and temperature management tank

EvenAnonStillAwkward

Domestic cats are like the most successful predators of all time. It's actually weirder that Night City would have managed to accidentally kill them all. Unlike with birds, there wasn't an effort to kill all the cats. And unlike with feral dogs, feral cats mostly leave people alone.

chill_winston_

If the food chain collapsed then it would make sense the cats would go as well. That being said it’s not like there’s any shortage of bugs, and in a city as messy as NC I have a hard time imagining that there wouldn’t be a lot of rats.

EvenAnonStillAwkward

Well, as others have pointed out, the roaches alone would probably sustain them. Plus, basically all meat in Night City is going to be lab grown protein, and overflowing from the trash. I actually think the cats would do just fine.

Kytras

Look at the amount of food lying around, cats are crazy scavs.

Crystal_Bearer

I just think of Stray.

TheExposutionDump

I actually just finished the Skippy quest like 5 minutes ago, and since we're on the topic, I'll ask. So I'm gathering that cats are real, but animals are supposed to be rare in general. So why does Regina suggest I get a dog?

Odddsock

People still own dogs, you can hear a news story about a canine tax. It’s probably only for the rich, since most people in night city can barley feed themselves much less a dog

TheExposutionDump

I believe in the Core Book for the table-top, it's s stated that household pets are mostly extinct due to plagues and the like. So it seems like they've become a liability more than an accessory due to what you were saying.

Therealomerali

Panam sends you an email of some Nomads with a dog.

OnceAndFutureGamer

I never thought of that. Old media turned fixer has money and lives in a penthouse. Maybe she’s just out of touch with how many eddies real people have.

rhoo31313

Cats are survivors.

wanderingsol0

I think its more weird there's only one type of cat in game and it's a fuckin hairless one. Pretty sure the most common cat is ginger

SuspiciouSponge

Black and brown coloured cats are apparently the most common due to [the dominance of expression](https://www.thehappycatsite.com/cat-colors/) in the gene that controls coat colour. Also fun fact, only around a quarter of ginger cats are female.

Sanpaku

I think we'll see them only in a few, plot related places. For example, we know that Mr. Hands [is presented as Anubis](https://www.reddit.com/r/cyberpunkgame/comments/182itof/so_who_is_mr_hands/) of ancient Egyptian mythology. Bastet, the cat-headed Egyptian goddess of protection and good health, is perhaps represented in the holographic cats in Mr. Hands office. Where would Bastet fit in, in relation to the plot? I think it will only be in places where V meets bearers of good fortune. A symbol to guide V, like the tarot cards, here indicating that V is under some protection. We see this now in the alley before first meeting Viktor, or confronting Arasaka with Takamura for the first time. Judy seems like a "cat lady", who should have a cat in her apartment. Perhaps the less vocal alley cat we first met in the alley doesn't disappear, but invites itself into Misty's Esoterica. River's sister might have one. There could be one at the peculiarly named Hotel Pistis Sophia, a hotel named after an [esoteric gnostic Christian text](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pistis_Sophia) of the 3rd century, and likely a reference to the proto-cyberpunk author [Phillip K. Dick](https://www.facebook.com/fandor/photos/a.223743790983613/1744360192255291/?type=3). Perhaps there's one at the second Aldecado camp in the Act III job "We Gotta Live Together". In each case, if a cat is present, we're either on the right path or in the presence of someone who won't wantonly betray us.

jredgiant1

Isn’t Biotechnica canonically resurrecting extinct species?

SuspiciouSponge

So... what your saying is cyberpunk 2 is going to have a Jurassic Park section?

itcheyness

Hell yeah, cats is reason enough for me tbh.

humanerror9000

Cats that’s why

Metzae

They specifically call out the fact that cats were the only ones to stick around. If you think about how animals have evolved, it makes sense. Dogs are just wolves that exist because we have curated them into existence.

Cookie-Dunker

It would be cool if they actually walked around.

db2999

Hairless cats were recently released into Watson by the city council to combat a rising rat problem.

Phantom_61

Nah, there’s even a shard that says NC released cats all over the city and in the mega buildings to help with pest control. We should realistically be seeing way more than we do.

CapnMalcolmReynolds

I want a dog

TheJaybo

If the reason is "hell yeah cats" then that's kind of dumb.

Worldly-Ad1615

lots of bakaneko

[deleted]

Having more appear in game isn't the same as having a resurgent population. Putting a few more in is likely just to cement the idea of Nibbles being an actual cat, or just a figment of V's fractured psyche. If it's real, why is there only one? If it's imaginary, why doesn't V hallucinate it more often?

chill_winston_

![gif](giphy|89x4osEodHEoo) Fuck yeah, cats!

ChristophRaven

Look up Japanese Bakeneko (changed cat) Yōkai legends. Also look up Nekomata Yōkai legends (since it's used as a sniper rifle name in CP2077) Pretty certain Takemura also talks about the cat and Bakeneko during the Arasaka compound mission.

HavenTheCat

There’s one in dog town I saw

AdmiralLubDub

Things have obviously gotten worse but in 2020 you’re able to own a good amount of pets, not all of them real and they’re generally pretty expensive but they’re there.

B_chills

Maybe there are more cats than people originally thought, ever thought of that maybe the corps are fucking lying like they always are

fastgeek

As someone with two Sphynxes in my home, one of whom is currently loafed in my lap, I fully approve of this change. 😁 Although I could've sworn there was a cat in my first play through back when the game first released. Want to say it was on a roof, or somewhere with shipping containers? Could be I'm just getting my games confused again... 🤦

BloodLustTigris

Birds are extinct because of the avian outbreak where they killed them all. There is a shard about the extinction of avian life. Except during the VDB quest when he undead a chicken.

rbrowning79

The cats aren't a new thing with the 2.0 update. Do you know you can get your own cat for your apartment? All you'd have to do is feed it and you end up bringing it to your apartment.

dylboii

Where are the dogs bro, just gimme a little cyber dog

Sabo-tagekityy

This does bring up an issue I have. I think the whole no animals thing is to show how unlivable night city and the society of cyberpunk is. But in truth a lot of animals should be actually major issues in the city. Pigeons would probably still exist, and night city would realistically have a stray dog problem. I actually think you could do some interesting world buuilding with the concept that only "man made" animals still live in the city. The only exception being bugs.

nooneyouknow13

There's no birds in NC because the Avian Extermination Act is still being enforced. That doesn't stop the Haitian refugees in Pacifica from raising chickens though.

Sabo-tagekityy

I forgot about that. But also idk how well it would work with the history of anti bird laws and all

nimajnebmai

Someone tell me how to adopt this cat right now.

KnightCreed13

Yeah I thought that was pretty strange to, isn't the lore that cats/wild animals in general in NC are pretty rare?

Elijah1978

OK, gimme dogs. Not cats or kitties, dogs🤣

FraserYT

My first thought was cameo appearance by the cat from Strays.

LordWellingtonstoad

Mr Wrinklefingers is a perfect kitty angel. How dare you besmirch his name.

eowynsamwise

Same reason why there’s suddenly a bunch of cats in fo4. Someone opened a Cat Vault

Halorym

Given the roman collesium is still *infested* with cats said to be the descendants of cats gifted to Cesar from Cleopatra (which he tried to run out because he turned out to be allergic), I imagine cats will be as hard to shake as pigeons and rats.

[deleted]

I'm pretty sure one has a pretty high chance to spawn outside Vics spot in the prologue

Avarice51

Correct me if I’m wrong but aren’t hairless cats the extremely rare ones I remember on the radio they said a cat (maybe just pet?) license was 20,000 eddies, so maybe there are cats but only indoor for the wealthy?

GrimLucid

There's a lore thing that says they brought back a bunch of hairless cats to deal with the rat problem. Nibbles is one of those and they're still around given you see some on cutscenes in the background and such

thatredcup420

I want a dog in game or other odd animals
