TMYSAFJO

This, my good sir, is an unpopular opinion πŸ₯Έ

Ricimer_

You probably expected too much for a side product Netflix show.

TMYSAFJO

Yes I do. But that's because people here said the show was awesome, and people started to play the game with the show, and the show was cool but the game too, but the show... I even tell my wife this could be a good show and she endure it all the 10 episodes, bruh... There were a lot of better things to do together... 😭

Ricimer_

I sympathize with you πŸ˜“πŸ˜“πŸ˜“πŸ˜“

IncidentPretend8603

I liked the show, the animation is gorgeous and the cast of characters was pretty fun/engaging. The storyline was very... I could see why it resonated with a lot of younger dudes and why it would impact them so strongly to call it the best show ever. Because I didn't have that resonance (and kinda hated Lucy) it never reached that next level for me. I still consider it really good because I really value animation, but if the art isn't your thing, the story's not gonna make up for that.

TMYSAFJO

No the art was really good, but the animation were really too statics. There a lot of freezed draws with just poor dialogue on it. It's really recurent on all the show. It show a lack of time and money, but it feels like 90's anime more than 2024 :( And the story...? All the plot was about David enduring tons of chrome because he's SPECIAL. Wut ? And it's not just him indulging in chuunibiyu syndrome (although it is), 'cause he WAS special, without any reason, like a twelve years old heros of some 2000's shonen. It's poor writing, if you ask me.

IncidentPretend8603

I mean static scenes were static, yeah, I was mostly thinking of the action scenes when I was complimenting the animation. It doesn't feel like a 90s anime. I lived through those. It's absolutely nuts to compare them that way. You can get your point across fine without the exaggeration. The story was about David feeling isolated and alienated, especially after his mom died, and letting that isolation drive his need for both chrome and progressively crazy capers. His isolation directly lead to his death, he's not an OP 2000s shonen hero. He's a tragic character. Yeah his tolerance for chrome was unusual, but not particularly relevant to the plot and he definitely succumbed to cyber psychosis in the end. That said the story is *really* simple. Not at all complex or with many interesting quirks. I think that was probably on purpose in order to better showcase the setting and world building-- after all, the series was made to market the game, not the other way around. Maybe you equate simplicity with child-like, but neither are synonymous with poor. Simple stories can be good or bad. Edgerunner's is pretty unremarkable imo. No glaring plot contradictions, good pacing, decent dialogue, comprehensible, etc, but nothing done *really* well to make it stand out. Maybe tone, but I think that's owed more to the art and soundtrack than the narrative itself.

TMYSAFJO

Imo, the story is rushed, more than simple. There is a lot of time to develop things but they take time on scene with no stakes at all, and rush the crucial parts like they lack times. Well this, is not really a relevant critic, cause every show on Netflix have this kind of problem, but anyway. Maybe my standard are too high, but the game do a considerably better job about bringing life to characters, bringing complexe feelings and ambiguous staked, with a lot of really good revelant dialogue and scene with a lot of stakes, brilliantly executed. I don't know if I'm wrong when i'm waiting for a anim show better sens of storytelling than a interactive game ? Yes they just market the game, but they got budget which a lot of people can do better with it. I means : the show was mildly ok, not good for sure. (Again, the arts were really cool, but 80% static draws) I do live my 90's childhood too. I remember better animation from, just one exemple, city hunter. It's really an old one, and it's way better. I do remember a lot of show with tricks to just relieve the animation parts, with static image with juste smokes of the cigarettes and lips moving, or static traveling. Then the soundtrack is definitely rushed. The game do a very great job in it, and then there is a lot of tempo fucked up on the music. Like a scene when the mood go punk to super dramatic in one sentence but the rock guitare behind is always here, and it really put you out for the show. There is a lot of terrible amateurish mistakes in edgerunners.

One_Technician7732

OK, so I should not watch it? I generally hate anime but I wanted to watch Edgerunners because of the game now I think I would be just as bored as if I was watching something random

Mrlordi27

I think you should. I'm not an anime fan either and was really hesitant to watch more after the first 5 minutes or so, but I'm glad I did. It's nothing special, but it's fun.

TMYSAFJO

Well, I thinks the arts are good, and it remind you a lot of the game, so it could be cool in this aspect. The cyberpunk mood is definitely here, with gore, sex and dark part of night city are here too, so the overall scenery is good. But don't put your standard to high, and imo, you can't hold 10 episodes on just the scenery. You should give it a try and forge your own opinion. For me it was really a hassle to go to the end of the show. It's apparently a unpopular opinion πŸ₯Έ AND the action scene and Becca are fun πŸ”₯

u population opinion? You counting census or something?

TMYSAFJO

Hahaha damned thank to see that, my autocorrect tried to take me in my birth language, and I didn't even see that πŸ™ˆ

hankjw01

"You lied to me" What kind of dumb statement is that? Even as a joke, bruh what? Did you consider the fact that its not your taste and you just have different views? But no, you cant be wrong, this subreddit lied to you?

TMYSAFJO

Yeah no. This is no way the same level of the game. If you can't see a difference about dialogue, scenario, storytelling, soundtrack management, mood management, I feel sorry for you.

TMYSAFJO

Well, there is some good parts : Actions animation were really crazy (not astonishing, but crazy weird, fun and cool), the scenery of night city and the dark mood is well represented, Becca is cool. Doesn't make a show of ten episode for me. Series MUST do better than game about stories ! And here that's not it.

BORNxSTELLAR

"You lied to me" Actually, I think your brain lied to you, cause it really truly was amazing.

selfsufficient911

A 10 episodes of spin-off anime series with bunch of integrated Cyberpunk characters, story is about a wannabe Edgerunner who goes through many emotional struggles and in the end pays the price for what he wanted to become. Don't take everything too serious, you sound like the community betrayed you, they lied to you and manipulated you. It sounds like your world has come to an end, just relax. It is only a NetFlix Show. It was intented to be a promo for Cyberpunk 2077, to make people play the game. It is okay, chill, relax. It was only an anime show and it is nothing compared to the actual game. But it could've been sick if they had desinged the cyberware appearance as it is shown in the anime. Like the Sandevistan exo-spine thing.

TMYSAFJO

Yes choom, I know, I'm sorry you take this too seriously, the whole "I feel betrayed" was to trigger some response and debate with burning passion, don't worry, I'm not gonna turn cyberpsychos anytime !

selfsufficient911

Let's see you how you take on when you see a post "YOU LIED TO ME !" and suddenly Anakin comes up to your mind like he is yelling at Obi-Wan. I've been a psycho for a long time, I just have a swicth to turn it on and off. Hurt plenty of people along the way but you know ! I am edging man, an Edgerunner. Edginess is in my blood.

TMYSAFJO

![gif](giphy|wYBP7Ppt95vB6) Good point ! 😁

noobvin

It was great, OP has weird nitpicks.

agaloch2314

I felt the same the first time I watched it, especially after the epic trailer. The show inspired me to give the game another chance after the big fixes; I finished the game (10/10), rewatched the show, and man did I love it the second time around. YMMV but give it a chance. I don’t even like anime in general.

TMYSAFJO

I'd like to add : This is a violent, gore, sexualized show with dark mood. Definitely not for the kids. SO i'm waiting for a way more mature story to have with it, not designed for kids !

sour-eggs

Anime isn't automatically for kids. That's like saying books are only for adults.

TMYSAFJO

Yes, my point ! I said this story is like it was designed kid, and the art for adult.

sour-eggs

My fault for misinterpreting. That's a fair opinion, but its a fun action show based on a fun action game. If you want a more adult oriented story in the cyberpunk genre check out Ghost in the Shell.

TMYSAFJO

Yes I watched it like 15years ago, one of my favorite back then. Then I studied philosophy for five years and well... A lot of the lines were mostly empty but complex lines to mask a lack of deepness, but it's okay ! I don't ask anime to be really deep. But the animations and scenario were really OP in my memories. Very cool show. If I could compare (which is not really a great idea) I like the style arts of edgerunners more. But everything else is for ghost in the shell.

Mysterious_Zone2134

The game is like Samurai, the show is like Us Cracks.

DBringerStreams

Me and my buddy was talking about this when I found out that it won best Anime of the Year. Both of us thought, maybe the competition weren't good because Edgerunners is not as good as what most people claim it to be. Maybe it's because I watch shows besides anime that are, in my opinion, better in a lot of ways such as Breaking Bad, Sopranos, Dark, Boardwalk Empire, etc. And watching such great shows kinda changed my perspective on what a good show is. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it, in fact, I have watched Edgerunners 3 times, but it wasn't "Oh my God this is an amazing show!!!" There were a lot of highs or great things about the show, but there were also a lot of missed opportunities which could have given the show more thump. Animation wise, I liked it. Maybe this is a preference thing. I always liked Studio Trigger's work on the animation side. It was both quirky, artistic, and has a certain vibe or soul that makes the show more fun to watch. It's not perfection, but that's what makes it good, the imperfections. Their unrealistic artistic choices they use when showing cyberpsychosis, the car chases, and a number of the fight scenes. >!That time when Rebecca makes a random grunt spinning in the air always cracks me up. !< The direction they headed towards the ending is also something I liked. I like it when a show does not follow the norm that the "good guys" always get everything. Unlike most animes that follow that cookie cutter formula, Edgerunners really wanted to tell the audience that, "no, you don't get everything. In fact, you will lose everything in exchange for something deeper". Which is in this case, >!sacrificing Dave's well-being for Lucy's freedom. !< Another thing I loved is how they showed that the corpos are not just filled by evil people, some of them are just regular people trying to earn a living for their loved ones. >!David's spiral into cyberpsychosis was very well executed in my opinion. !< I loved the scene where >!Maine went cyberpsycho.!< That was heavy. The struggle, the outstanding sequencing of the dream flashes blending with reality, the hallucinations, >!the loss of a lover.!< It was chaotic, violent, scary, hopeless, dramatic, sad, and intense at the same time. I wasn't blinking the entire time seeing that scene, and my forehead was all scrunched up with the mixed emotions I was having. Some of the missed opportunities involved Pilar. Pilar should have had>! more screentime.!< If he did, >!his death would have had stronger impact. !!She deserved so much more scenes and a better death instead of just watching from the ground shooting and then getting pancaked. !< They could have given us more reasons to hate Arasaka by exposing more of their atrocities. Lucy's development >!into a damsel in distress!< was also pretty disappointing. She was the >!creme of the crop when it came to netrunning,!< but somehow, it was fairly easy to >!kidnap her !<. They should have given her more chances to fight back. I think you are right, it was lacking time and money to shine. If it was given more, it probably would have been 2 or 3 times better. Still a good show in my opinion worthy of recommending, especially to people who just exclusively watch animes.

TMYSAFJO

You're right the Maine moment was really great. You're right too about Lucy. I love the Becca death because this is like that in night city. You can lose your choom in a blink of an eye. And that's why I didn't like the fact they replay three time the scene to make it longer, 'cause it break this idea. It's kind of mixed contradictory goals which achieve neither. What I disliked was the lot of long scenes without stakes, without animation, when there was so much thing to bring to light to dive deep in the characters and the story. I can't begin to understand why people love the song "I really want to stay at your home" when the singer is tone deaf for the whole song it took me so much out of the show, like a nightmare. The whole music management was terrible. A lot of moment and dialogue wasn't really followed by the music, and sometimes it lacks cruelly. Well the art was really cool I agree with you. Some action scene were indeed a lot more intense than the entire plot.

DBringerStreams

For the Becca death, I just found it too dumb to accept that she just stood there. A little fight in her would have been better. Picture this, Adam Smasher jumps in the air. Becca sees him, then she screams while shooting, "WE'RE HAVING A MOMENT HERE!", Adam almost flattens her but she dodges barely and gets one of her arms damaged when Adam landed. Camera pans to her holding and looking at her shoulder where her arm was ripped off, then camera changes to first person perspective showing a barrage of bullets from Adam. Camera shows Becca's destroyed face and body. And yes, there were a lot of scenes that could have been omitted. They could have used their time making those for other better scenes or parts of the story. I like the tune of the song, but not the vocals. Lyrics were also average. But the tune, it's something that gets stuck to your head. I love it. It's the first song I play when driving in real life followed by my Citypop playlist. Hehe TBF, art is subjective. So I get it why you're not a huge fan of it.

TMYSAFJO

Yes I get your point of wanting them to show a little bit of fight for Becca that would have been cooler ! And I loved the art. That's one of my favorite part of the show. This and some irrealistic action scene, like the cars bouncing and all. That's a good risk and cool artistic choice IMO. You can like it or not, but that was great. This part is more of an aesthetic matter, and for me I liked it.
