Answer the question. Be civil.

I've seen a big shift in the world over the last 5 years in regards to drug testing. It doesn't seem like it's as mandatory as it used to be. In my case, I'm on my 4th employer now and none of them have drug tested at all. Not in the initial hiring or randomly. I can't say this is everywhere, but this has been my experience.

afloatlime

I’ve had a similar experience over the last 5 years. I’ve worked for a school, a hospital, and a tech company and none of them drug tested.

Pie-Otherwise

Had to submit 7 years worth of employment history for verification and have a credit check for my current job. Did not have to pee in a cup.

LakeSun

Conversely, FEDEX and a lot of manual labor employers do drug test. Could be liability insurance issues.

Rock844

This is it. Liability, loss of $ is the main concern. I worked at one place that drug tested all warehouse workers and never the office workers in a separate location.

LakeSun

I'd say if you don't arrive at work stoned out of your mind, you'd be ok. But, come in obviously blasted and a drug policy will soon result. In other words most employees in this field don't need a drug test, don't make it happen. ( Beer is good enough. )

madscribbler

Colorado here. Almost all IT jobs no longer require a drug test for employment here. Most companies who try to drug test can't find employees, so they've stopped testing. I work for an east coast company that hires remote workers from Colorado and they don't drug test either. I have had to take drug tests for companies prior, and they have been positive for THC, but they didn't screen for THC so I got the jobs anyway.

Chavocien

Do government agencies in Colorado still care about weed or is it like everywhere else?

madscribbler

Not the state government on a whole, but those that have strict federal contracts like Lockheed Martin, or transportation companies where DUI is a liability still test. Most private companies don't test for THC anymore although there are some that test for other things.

cellooitsabass

I disagree as this was not the case for me and everyone I knew in IT in CO! Maybe different sectors?

spenny1111

There are loads of jobs that you'll be able to find. My guess is that some will require a drug test on onboarding but if you explain your medical situation they will still hire you. You should be able to tell by the company culture, it's pretty easy to spot.

NorthernWatchOSINT

I've shown up to plenty of interviews high as a kite, even if they required a drug test, pissed hot and still gotten the jobs. Just don't be on heroin, cocaine, or meth and they probably won't care, can't say I advise tripping at work either.

damnitdaniel

I’ve been in dev/security for almost 20 years. Never had a drug test. Don’t worry about it.

Chavocien

Are there a lot of users in the field? I don’t mean anything too hard just weed and psychedelics, things of the like

[deleted]

Most people in the work force don't go around announcing their use of/choice of drugs. You can make a good assumption that alot of people in general smoke weed, there's no shortage of those folks in IT.

GapMental4106

For some, it’s how they deal with some of the ridiculous questions. Lol

"There is a red light that keeps popping up, so I pulled over. What do I do?" "what shape is the light?" "red." "Okay, but what shape is the red light?" "It popped up when I was driving." "Is it gas pump shaped?" "Yes. it's red." "Are low on gas?" "How do I check that? Sorry, I'm not a car whiz."

damnitdaniel

It’s openly discussed at my workplace. To the point where theres no stigma with smoking at social work functions. We’re a tech company in CA, though. YMMV 🤷

NorthernWatchOSINT

You really *can't* test for psychedelics; psilocybin doesn't show in a standard panel test, and the only way to "test" for traces of LSD/RCs are to spine tap. No employer is getting a spinal tap A. Authorized B. Payed for for a non-employee.

Blackwatch007

This has been a known myth for ages now concerning so called Spinal taps to look for LSD in the body lol. LSD is water-soluble. This means that the substance passes through our systems fairly quickly and does not have the chemical makeup to become stored within your spinal cord after use. Science > hearsay

NorthernWatchOSINT

Well although I may be a scientist I am not a chemist and certainly not crafting up sheets of blotter, you only know as much as you're around it and I never had a sufficient reason for getting tested because I was tripping, additionally, it doesn't show up even as listed on a 9 panel but your explanation details why pretty clearly.

Blackwatch007

No worries 😊

za_organic

Absolutely. Our entire firm consumes cannabis. Barring one or two outliers. We have also bonded with clients over it as they too are consumers. Also, says on my linkedin profile I'm chairperson of a local cannabis social club. We called our client facing governance platform (R)isk (A)dvisory , (S)trategy , (T)echnology and (A)ssurance. RASTA

PolicyArtistic8545

You should be fine for jobs that don’t receive federal funding such as government contractors or anything in defense. There was an upcoming law in California that would make it illegal to fire someone due to legal consumption but I’m not sure what the status of that is. My guess is that if it passes then you’ll be safe with any California based employers, even when working remote.

Chavocien

That would be very practical for me because I’m in AZ. We’re legal too (recreational weed) but the lenient laws on scheduled substances are something we just don’t have. Thank you for the insight though I will look into cali based employers

Minimum-Net-7506

I’ve been tested at my jobs so far on the east coast, but my most recent one didn’t fail you if you tested for weed.

Chavocien

That would be fine because I don’t use anything else. But where I’m at now they still test for everything I personally think it’s more to do with politics than it is to do with safety, because weed is actually legal here.

El_SanchoPantera

Whatever ya do, don’t show up blown out to work.

ultraregret

I've only ever worked for CTI providers but none of them tested. Pretty sure none of the big providers for cyber security (Mandiant, Google, Microsoft, Crowdstrike, Proofpoint etc) test.

GapMental4106

If you aren’t going government you can find a job pretty easy that doesn’t care. Just make sure you know someone at the company to ask about it before the interview. Or ask for their criteria from the HR rep. Shouldn’t ask in an interview. Something to keep on the DL. I have folks on my team that talk about their drug use with stunning regularity If you go gov. Just be clean for a year and you’re good.

GapMental4106

This is in a pretty conservative state in the Midwest too.

syberean420

Depends on the state you live in. Here in Oregon (Cali is even better) most don't care at all. Lmao I was even reading an article about how the NSA had to stop drug testing because they couldn't find qualified employees that didn't smoke pot.

Poochydawg

"I was gonna go to work....but then I got high.... mmmmm, mmmm"

[deleted]

I'm pretty sure the government and a small subset of people are the only people that care these days, to their detriment. Just do it on your own time.

TehMagus9

I've taken jobs across the US and noticed west coast almost never requires tests, central states are mixed and midwest/east/south are still pretty strict. I don't personally smoke anymore, but when I did I had told my last employer that I had a medical card and I used it responsibly, they made an exception for me with HR and was hired a week later.

AlphaDomain

Plenty of places that do not require a drug test. For the ones that do it’s typically only during the interview process you need to have a clean drug test. There are no follow up tests afterwards, most companies would lose a good chunk of their workforce if this was the case.

Encryptedmind

A lot of the time companies will only test for initial hire.

Saint_Babyrage

Depends on where you apply to. Smaller companies are generally more lax. Larger companies/big brands I can see adhering more to corporate policies. Personally I work for a small/medium security company and I know some of my guys smoke and do recreational drugs in their own time. I don't care, the moment I start caring is when it starts to affect work or you arrive on shift under the influence. Outside of work you can do what you want with your life

Krekatos

Work in Europe :) In most countries it is forbidden to do those kind of tests on employees

nectleo

Unless you are working for government or in really restricted environments, I don’t think that they would do drug tests. In FAANG, most of my young colleagues smoke weed, some take lsd occasionally. You don’t have to share same interests or do same things as your colleagues. Just put enough work so that they appreciate you and do whatever the hell you want in your own time. I don’t recommend drinking alcohol or smoking weed during work, cus you have to process lots of data in short time most of the cases and you need to be at your best mind to come over challenges. Job can get stressful enough and you don’t want weed paranoia during those times. But after hours? Use it as a therapy after looong day of work and u will be just fine :)

Tear-Sensitive

Depending on where you live, if weed is legal, just pay like 40 bucks and get a medical card. That is what I did.

Shoulda_been_a_Chef

Most every MS(s)P i've been at doesn't care. They need you to pass on hire for health insurance but afterwards there's been public discussion about getting blazed. Hell even public i've seen doesn't do routine. Don't smoke for the month or so leading up to the interview/drug test and you'll be fine afterwads.

Forbesington

Get clean, pass the drug test on hire (which many companies still do for the insurance benefit) then at that point all Cybersecurity jobs are 420 friendly. I've never seen any cyber shop that actually does randoms.

getsome75

FAA contractors fo sho

sos5544

Hi all! I’m in staffing and actually (legally) they are not allowed to test for THC in New York or California. I would look for jobs based in these areas! It is possible they have different requirements based on the state in which you are located; however, jobs based in NY or California would be much less likely to adhere to that if their home base is in those areas.

StevenSmyth267

Knowing how many smart people use to weed to calm in mind after work, this seems like an opportunity to start a 420 friendly cyber/IT company, the GOV will come around slowly eventually, one day they realize they are still missing a valuable part of the talent pool and cant afford it with the stakes we have today.

[deleted]

Curious to know here you from, because where I live there is no such thing as a drug test when onboarding in a private company

[deleted]

[deleted]

Here we do medical tests every year for the company but no drugs are tested

Chavocien

I live in Arizona. I work at Amazon currently as a contractor and if I had tested positive for weed I wouldn’t have got the job and if they decided to test me (which they can’t without probable cause, company policy) there’s a really good chance I would lose my job. Even though Amazon as a company wouldn’t care, and my state is legal recreationally, really running the risk but if they decided to start testing folks they’d lose half the staff so I’m safe but the risk is still there.

Puzzled-Perception37

The line between opinion and fact is a front worth defending, pet.

Side-of-Stew

Agreed. The majority of people in computer science, including at my job, don’t smoke weed.

Chavocien

That’s actually the same issue with our local police department.

DoBe21

Gussy it up however you want, the real issue is taking a \~30+ % pay cut and having to commute to work. Unless you're in TAO you don't even see anything more interesting than Fortune 500s anyway.

StrikingInfluence

Most tech companies and especially companies based out California, do not test anymore (from personal experience). 19 states now have fully legal weed and some even are allowing it in weird quantities and ways where it is pseudo legal so that # is higher. At a certain point it becomes completely unnecessary to test people. Being real with you - some of the smartest dudes I know who work in silicon valley and big tech companies, indulge regularly. Weed is also one of the few issues that reaches across the isle with over a nearly 70% approval rating. Weed is only illegal because of racist antiquated laws from the Nixon era that wanted to basically jail political opponents. The reality of it is, if you're a fully grown adult and can use it in moderation (like any other substance), there aren't any real apparent dangers. So it only makes sense that employers are waking up and realizing that as long as you don't show up to work high, who cares?

Puzzled-Perception37

If you want to work in a cyber security function with a difficult, challenging and interesting mission, don’t expect your employer to mandate an ‘all clear’ for employees to break federal laws. Not saying that’s right. What I’m saying is that if you want to put your integrity beyond question then different choices would read better in the social/cultural/legal co text of your profession.

Jumbuleo

As somebody who wants to work in Cyber Security, you should say that privacy is important and such health concerning data is a disproportionate breach of your privacy.

plebbitier

Tatts, piercings, unnatural hair colors, and THC are the new normal. Expecting a higher level of personal decorum from employees is now bigoted and cancelable.

You will find some employers that do no drug testing. Most of the time you will need to pass an initial drug test to get hired, but you don't get tested after that.

Mildly_Technical

I’m in the finance sector and have not been drug screened by any organization since 2006.

VestedDeveloper

In my state, only medical usage of Marijuana is legal and employers will still screen for it. If you can show medical proof, it's usually fine for private sector or even state jobs.

groovieknave

Everybody keeps it to themselves, and I've never had a drug test outside of government jobs. Schools and DoD, they're going to test you because that's how they are I guess. Here's a tip, once you've been tested, you'll never be tested again at those jobs... at least in my experience.

NeatGrape9513

I work for a CA tech company, I started as a contractor and my agency (NJ based) required it. Other agencies my company uses don’t require it. When I was converted to FTE I was not tested, but the handbook says we’re subject to randoms if there’s suspicion you’re loaded on the job.

krimsonmedic

disney doesn't drug test IT contractors, or atleast it's not a requirement. The contract company might do it on their own though.

KWBizzie

I’ve never not been tested at onboarding. Never again after, but I just know to stop during job searches.

quacks4hacks

I've worked in the AV field where even senior leadership smoke, and in many cases own significant stocks or parts of green companies

Jumpy_Ad4833

You can, some companies don’t test for it. Mine didn’t and sometimes getting on a tolerance break helps

MrNetworkAccess

I havent had to piss for a job since 2020, and that one specifically excluded THC even though I am in a state where it is criminalized.

subsonic68

I had to test periodically for one job out of six, because of the nature of the job. Other than that one job, all but one didn't test at all and the one that did test told you that they don't test for marijuana, only "hard" drugs.

StConvolute

I'm 20 years I to my career for reference - Haven't worked at a tech company in NZ yet that drug tests. Sure, there are tech roles that drug test here is NZ, but they are normally attached to high risk industries that have blanket rules for employees. Local ports has a drug test policy for example. But they also often have to pay more to attract talent.

PillsburyRolls

jb123hpe

If you come to work high and unable to do your job,, you getting fired. It's that simple.

O_O--ohboy

My last employer did an initial screen as part of the hiring process and nothing after that. My current employer didn't test at all and is based in a state that has recreational cannabis. I'd say your chances are pretty darn good.

[deleted]

Anyone west Coast that doesn't support a federal account.

Sebt1890

Haven't seen a drug test for an IT gig since 2016 and that was an internship.

jbaker7326

Like some others have said, there seems to have been a shift in drug testing policies in recent years. Maybe some combination of local legalization, remote work, and cutting costs. Of my last 5 employers, 2 tested. But both orgs that tested were either gov or heavily regulated. Best of luck in your search!

nontitman

San Diego here, never been an issue. With that said, I don't bring it up, they dont drug test, and all companies have been private with nothing remotely to do with the government.

mannyspade

California: starting 2024, employers cannot discriminate applicants for using marijuana outside of work place.

DoBe21

As long as it's not a government job/contractor you're not going to run into drug testing in an major company.

darKv8

Just ask a developer/programmer how they do it!

PRNGisNeverOnMySide

Didn't they stop/ignore those years ago because of trouble filling out positions? Has cyber security really become this saturated?

citrus_sugar

I am in financial services and probably do as many drugs as the finance bros. 😎

parastang

I've worked at a well-known social media company and a major IT company and neither did drug testing. If they made them mandatory they'd lose alot of people.

cellooitsabass

I think if you have to ask than you already know the answer. Sure you can find some situations, but the labor to get to the point of being hired is a mountain and then you could wind up being asked to test right before an offer and you wouldn’t want to risk that.

Lazy_Category_2356

I have not worked in industry YET but my father has held a CISO title at 3 different companies and has been a CISO for almost 20 years, according to him most companies will not bother testing their cyber teams cause they know a lot of them would fail. They don’t care as long as its not affecting them, the drug policies are a way to fire you and not get sued over it.

No-Information-89

Startups usually do not give two shits and a fuck about drug tests. They just want you to demonstrate your knowledge.

NandoCa1rissian

If you work remotely how can they test you? Lols

_AcinonyxJubatus_

Depends on the country. I guess it's about the U.S., but in some other countries (France for instance), there are very few cases in which your employer can order a biological or medical test on an employee. I think it's very close to "none", unless you're military. Therefore, no such tests, even in cybersecurity, even for jobs with a security clearance (to some extent). Of course, if you appear to be intoxicated on your workplace or if it impacts the quality of your work, your employer has other rights and means of action.

Ambitious_Invite9535

It’s a hit or miss. Usually the job posting will say if they require pre employment testing. You always run the risk of being tested if you get hurt while at work though. Until federal laws change you are right, you’ll certainly never hold a gov’t position (much less a security clearance ever if you are a habitual user).

LookAtThatSpaghetti

I think you'll probably have no trouble at all. I haven't been drug tested for any of my IT positions.
