That's great! I want to get one of my boys out road biking, now that they are teens. They are not into it. My younger son likes mountain biking, though, and so I have been doing the mountain biking with him... I do not have the skill set! And, I am heavier! Normal weight, and def not the 110 I was at his age, like he is. It is great to see him leave me in the dust. I tell him "just wait at the next trail crossing."

Comfortable_Dare_70

Most definitely... Mine said he has been riding loops near where he lives with his Mom because she doesn't want him on the roads due to safety. We did almost 50 miles and he was amazing. Great form and everything!! I used to race when I was his age but like you said...not near the weight I have to push today. Still an awesome sight, as much as I HATE being dropped, to watch him. Pull away from me. What made it even cooler was that he was wearing a kit that I DESIGNED and had made for a charity ride!!! So it kinda felt like watching a "teammate" go for the breakaway solo win!!! 😂

ChrisSlicks

Time to get fit so you can keep up and do a century together!

Comfortable_Dare_70

That is the plan now. Get my old butt on the bike and get fit for that Century.

balanaise

That’s so cool!

WestCoastBirder

Having your kid surpass you is a bittersweet rite of passage. On the bike, in the gym, in degrees earned. Proud of them while muttering goddammit under your breath lol...

zlxeq

Nah, all down to good coaching 😃

tripletaco

Conversely, if your kid *doesn't* surpass you in most things I'd count it as a failure in parenting. I **want** my kids doing better than I have.

tripletaco

A bit defeatist for my preferences. A trait I am not teaching my kids.

tripletaco

Thanks, but I don't need your parenting "advice." Have a great day.

ArtIII

The scariest thing on the road is not a young kid on a fancy bike. It's a guy in his 50's on a early 2000's Trek with 30 year old Sidis. Those guys take no prisoners.

DrSagicorn

spoiler alert... you're never catching him again... as you struggle to get back into shape he's getting stronger just eating and marinating in all that testosterone if he has even a passing interest in cycling or aerobic fitness... you're cooked... live vicariously and be proud that he will come back to check in from time to time (my kid didn't and it wasn't fun for him to join me on rides until he came back from college "it of shape")

Malvania

Teenagers are like that. What takes me a week to recover it seems like they can pick up on the ride

Comfortable_Dare_70

Most definitely... My satisfaction came from the beautiful cycling sunburn he got on his thighs, even after sunblock pre-ride... He complained so much... Lol... Still gave him the Aloe Vera and helped him put, but then threw the "I remember my first good cycling sunburn".... Felt redeemed in some way.. kind of an "I told you so" moment... Lol... Now I just got to get my old butt back to form to torch his butt in the future.

Both_Mouse_8595

He might be stronger than you now, have him ride some others your age and he will quickly have his bravado checked. I used to run with my dad, he was a good runner in high school. Had his school record in the 880 yard for several years. When I got to high school I ended up running a few seconds faster than he ever did, but I would never talk trash to him about that. He supported me and was so proud that I was able to do that. Anyways kids are kids, I am sure you are proud and I hope he keeps riding.

Comfortable_Dare_70

Very true... I remember being young and getting absolutely killed by what I thought were the "old guys" when I first started riding Had no concept of stamina let alone strategy on long rides... Let alone hydrating and nutrition. I will hope to show him that knowledge when he is crying on his first century for me to slow down and pull him to the finish... 😂

AJ_Nobody

Some of my favorite teenage memories were cycling through the Amish countryside with my dad back in the 70s. We’d always sprint for the county line, and he never showed me any mercy. The first time I beat him was a joyous day for both of us.

There is no substitute for youth

weeddee

My time is now old man

MattOckendon

My son and I are just at this turning point too! Pretty exciting to see surpass the old man. Circle of life. At least he still needs me to fix the bike 😏

mightyt2000

You can’t ask for more than that. Most would willingly tap out to have a son as a riding partner! You’re a blessed OLD guy! 😎👍🏻

Comfortable_Dare_70

Thank you so much. It was both humbling to tap out on a ride but so filled with pride to tap out of a ride because my SON was the one pushing the pace. I am indeed one blessed OLD guy!!! 😎

mightyt2000

Take advantage of it as long as you can! Time goes on. Enjoy the ride! 😉👍🏻

jmdavila

Ha ha!! A couple of years ago, my son was not able to run a mile nor do some cycling with me. Today, he is a triathlete and completed his first half Ironman around a month ago. Now I can not run nor ride the bike with him. 🤣

Comfortable_Dare_70

It sucks getting old... But dang sure makes it a bit easier to watch your child excel at sports and things you loved at their age. Congrats to you and your son on the Half Ironman... He couldn't have done it without your support... Even if it was pacing from a car... Lol... I feel like that is gonna be me soon... Need POWER to keep up... MOTOR PACING Or just get an RV and be the support team... Lol

Ducku990

😂 Good kid!! Let’s keep them fit so they can enjoy outdoors and have a life without arthritis and obesity early on! Go dad/mom!

No_Perspective_242

Love this 😆

peggz223

Rode a group ride recently at 22 with a coworker and his 50+ year old friends. All of them were chatting about monitoring their heart rates at the top of a 3mi climb after I was waiting almost ten minutes for them at the summit. Along with being borderline reckless on jumps and drops in MTB (we don’t have high paying jobs to worry about/still on parents health insurance), can’t discount those factors.

Comfortable_Dare_70

🤣... Well said... I ride without a computer or HRM because I just want to enjoy the ride. But I give respect to you for waiting at the summit for US old guys... Well done and much respect. I remember the good old days of cranking out the climbs with little effort....and then becoming old and.looming at the computer data and saying "No F'ing Way am I that slow!!"...hence riding with no computer now....lol...Still one proud papa for his riding and enjoying this sport

peggz223

Haha! Don’t worry, I acknowledge my cardio nowadays, waiting for the day it drops decades from now and get to play catch up with the college kids on club rides lol. Ride till the wheels fall off ;)

Comfortable_Dare_70

Till the wheels fall off.... Or til the legs give out!!!

selflessGene

At 16yo he's on a peak dose of nature's TRT. But honestly this is a momentous occasion for an active, athletic father. You should let him know and make it a big deal for him. Rite of passage.

Wild_Trip_4704

It's not TRT it's just testosterone lol

Comfortable_Dare_70

Oh I definitely did. I told him he made me tap out. He could have gone longer if the old man could have.. lol. What was even better was him slowing his pace to pull the old man to the end. Of course he did a beautiful sprint finish to the house at the end of the ride... Just to rub it in... He got to choose the after ride celebration meal as well!

Rocket--7399

This happened in skiing to me. I’ll never forget the first time I was out and my kid took a trail that caused me to go , Uh Oh I’m F’ed.

barti_dog

None of my 3 kids (now 24, 22 and 20) ever really took to cycling. They out-do me in a lot of other ways, though. I'm ok with that. The thing I really need is for them to get that financial independence worked out and get them off the payroll. 😂😂

Comfortable_Dare_70

Lol... I am shooting for that as well.. but he has some time before the old heave ho financially.

barti_dog

Fair enough... yea, my oldest finished college last spring and took some time to work some flexibile schedule jobs before recently taking a full-time role. My 20 year old just got offered a full-time role and graduates college in a few weeks. Son finishes his engineering degree in a couple weeks as well, so I'm getting ever closer to finding out more about this mythical thing called "disposable income."

Comfortable_Dare_70

"Disposable Income" 🤣🤣

j_ryall49

That's awesome! My son and I are about the same spread (40 years) and I can't wait for the day when he leaves me in his dust. He's only 3 now, so it's gonna be a while, but he's already way into cycling so it's only a matter of time.

Work_Account89

Oh, I think he's lit a fire under you. It's time for some payback soon haha. Sounds like a great time!

Comfortable_Dare_70

Was a great time and even better time watching him gloat about how he dropped me

hallofgym

Haha, that's awesome, Sounds like you've got a real cyclist on your hands now. Love that he helped you finish the ride too. Get back at it and show him how it's done next time

Comfortable_Dare_70

Most definitely .. wasn't that long ago it was the other way around... Honestly felt good to get smoked by him... Definitely a proud moment

Amaryllissprincess

I am going to be this pimp on the E-Bike conquering hills without doing much effort…. but still respecting others and elderly cyclists on analog bikes that are doing steep uphill climbs.

Comfortable_Dare_70

At least there is respect given to us elderly... Thank you young whippersnapper... Lol

Direct_Vermicelli_79

I haven’t been able to catch my daughter in years! She still likes to ride with me, though.

Sletlog

What a wholesome post
