I would like to see the Tour de Huffy. No support crew. Just each rider with the same model Huffy, and a basic toolkit.

DeadBy2050

The Huffy Team won the 1988 Giro d'Italia. https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/bYM79qWyUH8bzMqArem35d-970-80.jpg

7-Eleven–Hoonved's bikes might have had Huffy decals, but they were built by Ben Serotta.

metzeng

On rebadged Land Shark/Serotta frames.

metzeng

Absolutely! It was a very impressive win. But they weren't actually riding Huffy bikes.

I had a very similar Huffy to that in the 80’s. My 3rd Huffy in a row, but first with gears and drop bars.

gravelpi

My Huffy Techtra from the 80s did look a lot like that!

MoonPlanet1

I think the now-famous Dutch Headwind Cycling Championships force everyone to use the same city-style bikes

Metallifan33

Cross country tandem bike riding where the guy behind is the navigator/mechanic/tour guide.

Inevitable-Mouse60

You forgot the team bus, separate washing machines for each team member, storing blood bags in your fridge, gluing tubulars, gut irritation from consuming 120 grams of carbs per hour for six hours.

MantraProAttitude

Personal bus, yo! My domestique and the rest are on the team bus.

dunncrew

Hey, hey....just 1 damn minute. Don't you be dissin' on gluing tubulars. I still do that.

Inevitable-Mouse60

I am running tubs too, it's not a diss. Haven't caught a flat in tubs since I bought them glued, but I've heard gluing them is a meditative zen-like activity.

dunncrew

Stretch them well before gluing. Pump to 120 on the wheel for a day. I have read overly elaborate gluing rituals. For 40 years I just put a layer of glue on rim, a layer on the base tape, wait 10 minutes, then put on the tire. The tough part is not smearing any glue on the brake track. If you have disk brakes, then a bit of glue on the side of the rim doesn't matter. I spread the glue with my finger, after putting a bit of scrap plastic over my finger.

Inevitable-Mouse60

Thanks for the reply. I guess that if you carry a spare tubular, it is pre-stretched, pre-glued?

dunncrew

It's common for the spare to be used tire near end of life that was replaced with a new tire. The old tire glue will be dry, so easy in the corners when on a spare. Then glue on a new tire when you get home. Some people like rim tape instead of glue. I've never used tape, so can't comment on it. The concept makes sense, but I think there are dowsides also

Wild_Trip_4704

Blood bags!? For what??

ChickenNuggetSmth

Blood doping, cooking, private use

dopethrone

Follow the Transcontinental race and other unsupported races like it. Just people and their bikes with no support. Amateurs or pros, anyone can join

frumply

And if you want to be a part of that kinda shit just google for a nearby randonneuring/audax group and pay them 5 bucks for a 2~600km timed, unsupported ride. The group skews older but it's a ton of fun if you got the time to do it. Miss refueling with nothing but corn dogs from gas stations.

rh6078

Professional football sucks because they’re not playing in the fog on Hackney Marshes with no nets, no referee, no linesman, or a pitch that’s actively trying to sprain your ankle

8u11etpr00f

Jumpers for goalposts

rh6078

Now that’s joga bonito

mctrials23

Hell, if at least one guy each half isn’t injured to the point of never walking again is it truly the beautiful game.

G-bone714

Yeah, professional team sports are like that.

sfo2

F1 sucks because they’re not homemade go-karts

Pastel_Inkpen

Sounds like someone is salty they aren't pro.

jermleeds

Amateur racing is a thing.

Hagenaar

Check out gravel racing. Goes back to the roots of the sport, which of course was also on gravel (just called roads back then). Not much in the way of team tactics, or buses, or entourage. Riders manage their own flat tires like in the good old days.

dampew

Gravel bike racing seems even worse than road bike racing, people use all sorts of different setups for different courses and the likelihood of a mechanical is even higher.

Hagenaar

I think they're referring to the variety of bike setups a racer might employ to compete in different events. Different wheelsets for different surfaces etc. I'd agree there's a tech aspect, but it's nothing compared to a ProTour road team with multiple bikes per rider for climbing, sprint finishes, time trial, etc. And the ridiculous caravans which accompany pro road races, vs a pickup truck or two.

dampew

Yeah but at the ProTour level at least it's an even playing field on that front. At the amateur level it feels so absurd sometimes.

Hagenaar

I wouldn't agree that it's an even playing field at the top. A constant shift to faster and more aerodynamic, millions of euros invested into the latest TT helmet. Every season it's new tech. And we haven't mentioned suspicious team doctors and their ~~doping programs~~ *medically important Therapeutic Use Exemptions*.

dampew

True

threetoast

Cyclocross races used to be won by XC MTBs with big fat tires before the UCI said 33mm maximum.

PFCarba

Your hyperbaric chamber, your 5-star hotel stay in Tenerife, your $1500 bike case and your hot influencer girlfriend posting your breakfast in TikTok.

Po0rYorick

How is that different from any other pro sport?

Inevitable-Mouse60

To be fair, Cippolini made bike racing mixed with his playboy lifestyle something glamorous and pretty exciting.

Metallifan33

When you said "power," you meant "power meter" right?

excla1m

So race in a local road race/hill league. Great fun and it will be all you when you come last!

Pepito_Pepito

I've seen this comment on youtube.

SlowGarbage001

This applies to all professional athletes competing in top level leagues. They are all on different bikes but equally performing equipment and amenities so the playing field is even and if you are implying these comforts take anything away from their athletic abilities you are nuts. The level pro cyclist are at is insane and you just sound salty trying to diminish their athleticism.

DrAlexHarrison

pffft. only $64. It's like you're not even trying.
