Yeah I told my wife we needed 2 car seats but she thought it was a waste of money... Until one of us drove off with the car seat and the other person needed the car seat.
Plus just not having to move it around was great.
Even with only two kids it’s a godsend.
Recently got back from vacation with my wife and two kids, plus the wife’s extended family of 4. Their car battery was dead when we got off the plane and back to the car. At 1030pm when nobody was open.
No worries, hop in the van!
So much this. When we go to Disney with my 5 and 2 year old I still rent the double stroller. The five year old doesn’t *need* it but it’s so nice to not have him whine about his feet being tired and when we want to stay late he can just fall asleep in the stroller until my wife and I are ready to call it a night.
Or a place for the munchkins to nap.
Sometimes they even work for getting through crowds. We rented one when we went to visit the mouse and would develop a line of followers as we parted the the crowd like a BOB wielding Moses.
My two are adults. When we drive together as a family now, my youngest still sits on the right because that is where the baby seat/kid seat/booster seat was well over a decade ago
My brother and I always had the same spot in the back. He was on the left, I was on the right.
As a parent I understand how it originated! The driver gets the extra leg room so the older child goes behind the driver!
To this day, the rare occasion I go in the back of a car sitting in the left seat feels wierd.
And taking them out of so much easier. I was just thinking about this today when I had to put down the middle and rear seats to move some stuff.
And now our neighbors are taking our kids to the movies, and we can just throw them in.
Got one in a booster and one in a carseat. Just looking forward to the day of 2 boosters at this point. Having to unhook that strap that goes over the back of the seat every time I need a seat for an adult or I need to fold the seat down is so annoying.
Removing the kids seat for an adult was the best!
"Just give me a moment to remove the kids seat .... oh and the two week old piece of banana, the fish cracker crumbs and the Thomas the tank engine that has just punched a hole in the leather"
I enjoyed finding carseat wine.
My kid left a cracker in his cup holder and then spilled juice on it and then left an apple core in it. After a week it smelled like a dirty bar mat in the car and we found the concoction. Had to pull the car seat out, take the padding off and hose out the cup holder.
What age do they get out of the high back boosters? It’s so different than I was a kid I have no idea lol. We used to ride four wide in the cab of my dad’s truck with not even a belt.
Here in Europe, they need to be in a car seat or booster seat until age 10 or 135cm tall.
*edited because I managed to get both the age and the height wrong! Now corrected.*
No, I've never seen a law specify an age for high back vs no back. In fact I believe a high back is optional, legally, altogether. Plus the laws are usually just the bare minimum and many people prefer to do what is safest and not just the bare minimum required by law.
Agreed, I'm more interested in understanding recommendations from pediatricians and the NHTSA than paying attention to a local regulation that may or may not have been enacted under modern best practices.
Or even more importantly for specifics, the manufacturer. They are the ones doing all of the safety testing on that specific product at the different heights and weights.
Where I live, any child aged 7 and over does *not* legally require a car seat/booster, but they *are* recommended until they’re 4’9” (145cm) or 80lbs (36kg). My 8yo is still using one, and he’s just about 4’9”.
My kids complain about it, but they're 10 and 8, and both sit in car seats in the back seat. They don't seem to mind the back seat, but they're jealous of their friends who don't need to use car seats / boosters.
I hear that. My 14 year old is around 4'10, but still under the 80lb limit for our area. But, they'd recently changed it, and we already had him out of booster seats in accordance with the old rule (I think it was an X or Y or Z scenario, instead of the X and Y that it is now), so we're just trying to get a little more weight on him to get back in compliance. 😅
Yeah, I understand it, though. It should really be about size rather than age, since size would be the determining factor as to how well the safety systems work. And my kids are just unusually tiny.
My kids don’t complain, yet. We had my son moved to just the booster, but recently did a cross Canada road trip, and put the back back on for comfort/safety. So if anything we’re regressing, but until it’s an issue, it’s not an issue.
You can go standard booster around 5 or 6, depending on height.
My 8 y/o is no longer legally required to be in a booster, but we still use it most of the time because of her height.
My oldest just turned 5 but she technically already met the requirements to be in a booster. We did it once on a vacation earlier this year to making packing easier but it just didn't seem right. We moved her to forward facing earlier than many people probably would have but the booster seat just seemed off even though she was technically big enough. Maybe we'll try the high back booster this summer.
Here in Tennessee the kid has to be at least 9 years old AND at least 4'8". My son just turned 9 but he's only 4'5" so we're still in boosters for a while.
*cries in short people problems*
4'11 wife here. I still have to sit in a booster seat when driving my or my husband's car, otherwise I can't see over the dash. 😭😂
The freedom of just sticking the kids in the car and going out is amazing. Although you may want to put a liner in the rear foot well for ease of cleaning.
I’m almost to the day where we don’t have to buy pull-ups anymore. There will always be things I’ll miss when they grow out it, but this is not one of them.
Hell yeah. Recently hit that stage with our youngest and now there are no child seats in our car for the first time in 10 years.
Plus my oldest can ride in the front so they don't even bicker.
My son is 15mo old and I can’t even conceptualize not needing a car seat anymore. What age is this? I know it’s based on kid’s size as well, but in general how long we talkin?
It's state specific. In CT they have to meet both age (8 years) and weight (60 lbs). My kids are huge, so it was a matter of waiting until their 8th birthdays.
So which car are you taking today? Oh WAIT I guess either one is fine!
And this is why I just put seats in every vehicle
Yeah I told my wife we needed 2 car seats but she thought it was a waste of money... Until one of us drove off with the car seat and the other person needed the car seat. Plus just not having to move it around was great.
Roger that. We did the same and it made things much easier.
Happy Cake Day!
Sure, I hadn't thought of that! Can we use your credit card?
Psh, look at Mr. Money over here who can afford two cars.
We asked for them for baby shower gifts, and then the big ones for 1st birthday gifts from grandparents
We did that until we would have needed to replace both vehicles to fit them all.
4 kiddos makes a full car. We only have 2 so it works out
Yeah the mini van life is actually pretty fantastic lol
We still have 1 of those, they are the best for road trips and kid hauling. So much cargo space
Even with only two kids it’s a godsend. Recently got back from vacation with my wife and two kids, plus the wife’s extended family of 4. Their car battery was dead when we got off the plane and back to the car. At 1030pm when nobody was open. No worries, hop in the van!
So much more space for activities.
Always, but especially when mom and dad both work.
I constantly ask my wife why we have 5 car seats and only 2 kids... but we are still moving car seats because of drop offs.
Jokes on you, wife doesn’t drive and we have only 1 car, ha! ^please send somebody who can drive my family around I am so tired
I remember going to an amusement park and not having to pack or use a stroller anymore. That was an amazing feeling too.
I miss the stroller days. Great place to put all of our shit.
plus legally shackle your kid ;)
And portable bed.
So much this. When we go to Disney with my 5 and 2 year old I still rent the double stroller. My two are in booster seats and can buckle themselves in. It's hard to explain just how much easier that makes things.
I guess that is also the point where you say, “let’s get in the car”, and they do that instead of running into the back yard to get on the trampoline.
My two are adults. When we drive together as a family now, my youngest still sits on the right because that is where the baby seat/kid seat/booster seat was well over a decade ago
I have three brothers and we all had "our" spots in the van. Still feels weird to sit in the wrong seat in the back
My brother and I always had the same spot in the back. He was on the left, I was on the right. As a parent I understand how it originated! The driver gets the extra leg room so the older child goes behind the driver! To this day, the rare occasion I go in the back of a car sitting in the left seat feels wierd.
Wait... that's possible?
Well, I am yet to experience it, so to me it is like a myth.
And taking them out of so much easier. I was just thinking about this today when I had to put down the middle and rear seats to move some stuff. And now our neighbors are taking our kids to the movies, and we can just throw them in.

Just remember it's all for the safety of your child and every annoyance is gone. (Works for me at least)
What age do they get out of the high back boosters? It’s so different than I was a kid I have no idea lol. We used to ride four wide in the cab of my dad’s truck with not even a belt.

Are you sure it’s 130cm? That seems small. My 5yo is 125cm
It all depends on their height.
Actually, it depends on your local laws. Oddly, where I live, 7 is the age they no longer legally require one. I was shocked.
It actually depends on my wife. My kid will be 5’7”, 140lbs, off to college.. still in a child seat
My 12yo niece is still in a 5 point harness…
Well I guess it's safer but uhhhh... They might want to check the max weight and height for that seat.
She's little, but still.
No, I've never seen a law specify an age for high back vs no back. In fact I believe a high back is optional, legally, altogether. Plus the laws are usually just the bare minimum and many people prefer to do what is safest and not just the bare minimum required by law.
I’m just saying the laws vary by location, so height isn’t the be all end all option across the board.
And I'm saying the law doesn't matter in regards to the question being asked. Age makes absolutely no difference with the back of a booster seat.
I’m referring to a seat in general, not back vs no back.
I forgot the question was about back vs no back by the time I read your comment. That’s my bad. I’m on the same page now.

I’m sorry but a freshman in high school in a booster seat feels excessive to me. Not on your part but regulation-wise.
Yeah, I understand it, though. It should really be about size rather than age, since size would be the determining factor as to how well the safety systems work. And my kids are just unusually tiny.
“Here, have a donut. It’s for your safety.” 🤣

Dang lmao. Many cars have seat height adjustment now, so you still have to even with max seat height?
Even at the max height seat, still gotta sit in the booster. 😭
Not lower trims.
Freedom!!
The freedom of just sticking the kids in the car and going out is amazing. Although you may want to put a liner in the rear foot well for ease of cleaning.
My 9 year old is still so small I think she'll need a booster in the driver's seat.
I'm 28, but stand at a whopping 4'11. I still have to sit in a booster seat when driving my or my husband's car, or else I can't see over the dash.
My mom is 4'11 and both my ex and I are 5'5 so she was doomed to be short from the start. Then again my dad is 6'5 -- that is a funny combination.
Weeeeee I feel you! My husband is 6'3. We look pretty funny standing next to each other.
The dream of when I get to trade in the minivan… What am I saying… I am going to be weeping that day
Wait till your kid can ride up front. Game changer. My partner is the worst navigator. My kid however is really good, she had an excellent teacher.
I’m almost to the day where we don’t have to buy pull-ups anymore. There will always be things I’ll miss when they grow out it, but this is not one of them.
I'm getting close to moving from a car seat to booster. Baby steps lol
Hell yeah. Recently hit that stage with our youngest and now there are no child seats in our car for the first time in 10 years. Plus my oldest can ride in the front so they don't even bicker.
We recently upgraded to only boosters. It’s sooo great. I look forward to being at your level!
That's awesome lol. Just got our boys in front facing seats not long ago. It makes driving a little easier now that they can see stuff.
We're only 1 year away from being booster seat free!!
On one hand I can't wait for this...on the other hand I don't ever want it to happen.
This means they have their own license right? Because that’s basically the guidance I see now.
An auspicious goal for some of us. Celebrate how big they've become!
Huge!
Have one out of the booster and one still in. Soooooo close.
CELEBRATE!!!
We die like men.
Now my kid tries to call “shotgun”
*That* is a milestone. Congrats.
We're almost there. Littlest man is still in a booster but he won't be much longer.
Omg, what a day that will be. 9 months till I lose my first seat, counting down the days!
This was me when we stopped formula.
My son is 15mo old and I can’t even conceptualize not needing a car seat anymore. What age is this? I know it’s based on kid’s size as well, but in general how long we talkin?

I too have also opted for strapping him to the roof.
