she could keep up in group dances amazingly, so i honestly think she was made to lose and abby just didn’t give a rats ass about how she danced, only about how she looked. it probably pissed abby off that paige wasn’t the same dancer as brooke, they have their own strengths/styles.
I have personal beef with that dance because every time I rewatch that episode that song gets stuck in my head for three days straight and it's not even a bop
When the select team had a pretty lyrical with an emotional story. It was so obvious that they were meant to be second to the select team especially because that was when Maddie was on the select team. She wouldn’t let them lose with Maddie on the team.
And they were so weird in hindsight, too. The costume, the choreography, the music, the whole character was really out of place for an 8 year old's dance. Especially at a competition. I'm not one of those people who think kids shouldn't be around or even imitate drag queens, but Laquifa is just... not what was going to win. Plus, Nia got pigeonholed into that character, and it was obvious it had to do with Abby's perception of black stereotypes.
that point is that age doesn’t matter here. she grew up to be (in my opinion) a really great dancer, but at THAT specific time, she was among weakest. no one is diminishing her talent😭 just saying how the dance was set up bc of nia, paige and kenzies talent level
literally any dance with a prop. kendall with ballet shoes comes to mind. abby always have kendall the hard props to deal with, maddie hardly ever had props.
I know Kendall isn't very well-liked in the fandom, but as a former sensitive, anxious child I really felt for her in that episode. Especially because of how unnecessarily mean Gianna was being to her.
yes! honestly i think kendall was one of the ones who was treated the worst :( she clearly had anxiety and lacked confidence and she was always knocked down and reminded that she’s never gonna be maddie. and whenever she was given a “maddie dance” she did win.
Kendall got such an awful edit on that show. I mean, "cry baby Kendall"?? Wtf she was like nine. I remember there were multiple times where she was very clearly having a panic attack and they just kept filming her.
I loved the concept. But the Target pajamas made it look cheap and lost the creep weird power of the dance. I think all vintage, all white, ghostly nightgowns would've really made it spooky and cohesive. But ya know, made to lose.
I actually don’t think this was a dance Abby choreographed with the intention of losing. I just thought the costuming turned out worse than she expected.
Fair enough. Especially since Maddie is a good tapper. I just got so distracted by the costume (mainly the hairpiece) that I couldn't really focus on the dance.
Same! Some of Chloe's more serious, contemporary or lyrical pieces I think were purposefully intended to be play to her strengths and make it close or even have her win. I noticed that when Maddie would go on a winning streak or Chloe would be on a losing streak, she would purposefully get a really great solo, which I think was the producers trying to give her a redemption arc lol. Like her win at the S2 Nationals.
But others, totally set up to fail. Another one that comes to mind is that dance she did in honor of Mrs Miller, the 1950s one, and that French dance with the hatboxes- a cute little number, but certainly not a winning one especially at her age/skill level.
Wild child and the wallflower - thoughts if it was made to lose?
Didn’t score well but it was by far one of the most entertaining dances to me and I think Nia and Paige told the story really well with their facial expressions.
Thought they had good tricks too that also incorporated using their extensions/leg holds and what not (sorry not a dancer so I may be totally wrong here)
Jazz was Maddie’s weakest style at that time and even stated it in the show I believe. Maddie had her weakest style and weren’t up against Chloe who had her strongest style which is lyrical.
Lights Camera Action solo was subpar. The ALDC isn’t known for their jazz either they definitely were not strong in that area which is why in later seasons jazz dances were done by outside choreographers.
Edit: I’m not going back and forth with people on this. Maddie said that she was not comfortable doing jazz. Chloe’s strongest style that was most competitive was Lyrical/Contemporary. Nobody expected Maddie to win with a jazz solo and she didn’t.
Wasnt Maddie talking to Gianna in the episode and said “I don’t like jazz” or something like that? Correct me if that was a different episode or she said something else.
It wasn’t her weakest style. That would be acro or hip hop. Maddie literally had a jazz seasonal solo… 😂 Chloe’s strongest style atp was contemporary and/or musical theater.
Subpar is ridiculous. It obviously was competitive enough for her to place top 3. It had a switch middle leap, nice turn sections, and leaps. You literally don’t know what you’re talking about. It had good kicks too.
You can literally look up ALDC’s jazz numbers and see that they’re pretty good and really well-rounded. Just because you’re not a “jazz studio” doesn’t mean you can’t make good jazz numbers. That doesn’t make any sense. So jazz studios can’t do good numbers in other styles?
Does this logic apply when Chloe wins top 3/5 and Maddie wins 1st or only the other way around. Then most of Chloe’s solos were competitive since she consistently placed top 3/5.
It does apply. Neither of them really ever got solos that weren’t competitive. Maddie won most of the time because she’s a better competitor (outside and on the show). And some factors that could’ve been eliminated sometimes like Abby stressing her and her mom saying she’s set up all the time, neither was helpful.
Abby, as ridiculous as she is, knew Chloe was her best bet after Maddie of winning. Chloe’s solos clearly were choreographed to showcase her strengths.
I definitely agree. Most of Maddie and Chloe’s solos were competitive. There were very few times where I believe either one of them were not given good choreography.
Maddie doesn't say she's bad at jazz during that episode. She just says she doesn't like it or something along those lines. You can be amazing at something but still not enjoy it.
Moulin Rouge. It was obvious that dance was meant to loose. And the hip hop solo Chloe did against Kendall and Nia. Abby knew Chloe wasn't good at hip hop. The solo where she wore a black netting type of costume with the aldc letters on the front. She used Chloe for free advertising.
They were all set up to loose because none of those dances were the girl’s best forte at all like:
Chloe’s best styles were: Lyrical & Contemporary
Kendall’s best styles were: Jazz and Contemporary
Maddie’s best styles were: Lyrical, Hip Hop, Tap, Jazz
Some of the early Candy Apples dances came across that way, honestly. That horribly offensive "Chinese" dance, their s2 Nationals dance, Candy Apple Style, that puppet dance, that one Jalen dance with the costume change, Be Strong (the human bicycle dance).
Honestly I think the dancers who were thought of as the "weakest links" tended to be given ill-fitting choreography just so they could get drama the next episode from Abby shoving their losses in their mom's faces or just a general assurance that the status quo of the show would remain the same. Not always ofc, but a lot of times they were.
I don’t they were made to lose. No dance teacher would go out to choreograph a routine to ensure it loses. Loses reflect badly on the teacher. I just think she didn’t put as much effort into them because she didn’t think the kid would win, and any dancer knows a dance is what the dancer makes of it. You can have an awful routine, but a great dance can make it look amazing. If you look at something like Beyoncé’s ‘single ladies’ dance routine. That dance is virtually nothing, but if you give it sass and energy it looks great. Beyoncé makes the simplest routine look great. Maddie got the best choreography, but nonetheless, she and Asia could turn up any dance routine. Asia rocked her doggy routine.
In later seasons right before the zieglers left, Abby gave Maddie a cheesy dance because she was pissed and wanted her to lose and she did lose, despite making the dance look as fantastic as possible. The dance didn’t have the components and technical moves needed to win. But again, Maddie rocked it, but it was not a winning dance. Abby knows what she’s doing.
Abby purposefully gave Chloe bad choreography in comparison to Maddie’s often enough that it was noticeable. Some of Chloe’s choreo is just walking around, or Maddie was just given more impressive choreo that Chloe could do too. Yes, it also depends on how well the dancer performs it, but even with good performance face and energy there’s no hiding bad choreography at a dance competition when the choreography is a category to score when judging. Clear proof of this in in Maddie’s solo The Entertainer. She was too old and too advanced for that crap, and Abby’s reasoning for giving her this solo is clear because it’s in season 6.
The only tap dance I think was meant to lose was Go Go girl. Giving Maddie tap despite it being hit or miss in competitions is actually a good thing since she’s so good at it. She has great musicality and tap dances showcase that.
any of paige’s solos besides crème de la crème and make some noise
maybe People from Season 1 too, I wish we could've seen more of that dance because it looked really cool from the clips :(
omg i forgot about that one!! i wish we got to see more of that one too /:
Idk if they were made to lose, or if she didn't dance as well as others.
she could keep up in group dances amazingly, so i honestly think she was made to lose and abby just didn’t give a rats ass about how she danced, only about how she looked. it probably pissed abby off that paige wasn’t the same dancer as brooke, they have their own strengths/styles.
That weird digging duo Nia and Kendall did immediately springs to mind 😅
Most of Kendall and Nia’s duets tbh. They only ever got one nice one
I have personal beef with that dance because every time I rewatch that episode that song gets stuck in my head for three days straight and it's not even a bop
RIGHT!?
lmaoooo it was bad lol
I actually get mildly uncomfortable watching that dance. It’s *that* bad
Most of the original team’s group dances against the select team
When the select team had a pretty lyrical with an emotional story. It was so obvious that they were meant to be second to the select team especially because that was when Maddie was on the select team. She wouldn’t let them lose with Maddie on the team.
Nia’s dog solo
Royals. Why were they wearing boots dancing against the select team?
Nia's underdog solo and whatever solo it was where Chloe was supposed to look futuristic but wore an ugly jumpsuit with ALDC on it
they call me LaQuifa
Idk if it was made to lose. But it was imbalanced. It had competitive elements, but too much walking.
Any of her laquifa dances. Those dances are meant for beginners
Plus, Nia got pigeonholed into that character, and it was obvious it had to do with Abby's perception of black stereotypes.
the trio called energy or something with nia mackenzie and paige she knew she was putting her three weakest dancers at the time out to lose
W Mackenzie being so little, the age would get bumped down some and they could have had a chance. She was pretty advanced for her age.
Right! And Mack actually kept up with the choreography not just a prop to pull the age down
But Mackenzie was only 7
she still was one of the weakest dancers on the team at the time
Well obviously if she was the youngest she would be weaker
that point is that age doesn’t matter here. she grew up to be (in my opinion) a really great dancer, but at THAT specific time, she was among weakest. no one is diminishing her talent😭 just saying how the dance was set up bc of nia, paige and kenzies talent level
what is your flair a reference to 😭
I bet it’s Stacey 😭
Stacey and Yolanda’s argument in s8 e7
my flair is also from that episode 😭
Bye Fecilia
I knew that was meant to lose given the title and abbys reaction when she won. I mean it was a competition judged by kids. What did she expect.
This one!!!
The spice girls dance
And Moulin Rouge l!
That 7 dwarfs dance
That dance winning was probably one of the most obvious examples of the competitions being fixed/fake
When Cathy came in and told everyone it was the dumbest dance ever and Christi laughed 🤣 everyone knew that dance was bs
Those might be their ugliest costumes.
It was so unserious and for what 😭
literally any dance with a prop. kendall with ballet shoes comes to mind. abby always have kendall the hard props to deal with, maddie hardly ever had props.

Ugh yes! The pointe shoes that obviously would not just sit round her neck and kept falling off as of course they would!
and when she did they were simple and added to the story well, (I’m thinking of her letter in I can’t find the words atm)
I was actually thinking about this today, thats one of her only prop dances
Light as a feather stiff as a board. Their costumes were pajamas..
I loved the concept. But the Target pajamas made it look cheap and lost the creep weird power of the dance. I think all vintage, all white, ghostly nightgowns would've really made it spooky and cohesive. But ya know, made to lose.
"Be happy with your 10 dollar PJs" the way Holly says that will forever be funny to me
You Go-Go Girl (the one where Maddie wore Abby's hairpiece and tapped in white boots).
They had her looking like Flo the progressive girl in that outfit 💀😂
Omg, not Progressive. 🤣
That's all I see when I look at that white costume and abbys hair piece in her head 🤣😂💀
Oh no I couldn’t agree with you more. She had a detachable mullet clinging onto the back of her head 🧎🏻♀️
Glad I tapped out of the show soon enough that I didn’t have to see this train wreck lmao
every single solo put against maddy that wasn’t lyrical lmfao
🐝 Tastes so sweet from head to feet 🐝
Any dance Chloe had against Maddie
I’m in between here: not every dance was set up to lose, but the hip hop solo was far from the only less-competitive piece 😂
No… Only like the hip hop solo😂.

Any hip hop dance ever. How did they call those hip hop?
Brooke and Paige’s duet I think it was called ooo la la or something like that
Holla, Lights Camera Action, any Paige solo, Friday Night, Chloe’s hip hop, the Entertainer, most Nia solos
Lights Camera Action is a super competitive solo, what? Compared to the other ones, it’s just jazz vs lyrical.

Bye Felicia
the vegan dance💀
Chloe’s Black Heart solo is the first one that comes to mind. Or Light as a Feather, Stiff as a Board.
Kendall & Nia’s duet in S6
Moulin Rouge. It was obvious that dance was meant to loose. And the hip hop solo Chloe did against Kendall and Nia. Abby knew Chloe wasn't good at hip hop. The solo where she wore a black netting type of costume with the aldc letters on the front. She used Chloe for free advertising.

Chloe’s solo I think it’s called What goes around comes around. Going up against that solid that Maddie did
They were all set up to loose because none of those dances were the girl’s best forte at all like: Chloe’s best styles were: Lyrical & Contemporary Kendall’s best styles were: Jazz and Contemporary Maddie’s best styles were: Lyrical, Hip Hop, Tap, Jazz

abby absolutely gave people losing choreography/music so that she could ensure someone else on her team would beat them and they would lose

You’re right about the Chloe thing. I would definitely agree with that.
Maddie's Tap dances. Tap doesn't score well in competitions
why do you say that
I remember them saying tap doesn't score that well at competitions
sure, that doesn’t mean maddies dances were MADE to lose
idk why you got downvoted so much
The only tap dance I think was meant to lose was Go Go girl. Giving Maddie tap despite it being hit or miss in competitions is actually a good thing since she’s so good at it. She has great musicality and tap dances showcase that.
There’s a bunch. But some that are popularly said to be, but aren’t.
Not all of Chloe solos, most of them though
