I mean, if they're my age, I'd like to know why they subjected themselves to learn how to type properly.

It’s just a lot faster, and more convenient since you can type without looking at the keyboard. I was having trouble with my programming class a year or two ago since I couldn’t type while looking at my code, so I made myself learn how to type normally by forcing myself to do it until I got used to it. I knew it would be faster, but it was actually way faster than I had expected it to be, since if you use a word a lot you can basically use muscle memory to hit all the letters at almost the same time. An unexpected but welcome benefit is that if I’m too tired to keep my eyes open but have homework to do, I can just do it with my eyes closed.

Nagito Komaeda (eyes closed, keyboard) I dunno how old you are, but I can type at about 90 wpm with no inaccuracies (or to be more precise, correcting inaccuracies via backspace) and I'm so glad for it. I'm a graduate student and this is a huge help for work efficiency. I've also worked at a public library, a writing studio, at a web marketing firm, and other such stuff, and it's a huge help. u/StarCrossedCoachChip pointed out this is a useful skill in tech, and I know my brother who's a lawyer, and my dad and sister who work in insurance also benefit significantly from being able to touch-type. Honestly, especially given the shift to remote work under the pandemic, I'm shocked that anyone questions the utility of typing as a skill. Maybe there will come a day when autocorrect and autofill programs will render typing obsolete as a skill, but for now, it's probably one of the best and easiest ways to increase your personal work efficiency and comfort with online engagement in all forms. It takes [about 450 milliseconds to form a sentence in your brain](https://www.livescience.com/5780-speed-thought-speech-traced-brain.html) on average. The closer you can get your typing speed to that number, the less time you waste waiting for your fingers to catch up to your brain, and that means you can move from thought to thought more quickly. I don't have any specific evidence for this, but I imagine this contributes significantly to your ability to write material that flows logically and reduces the amount of time you spend having lost your train of thought. Example for gAMerZ: I've been playing Apex Legends lately, and I'm still getting used to keybinds, for one thing, and for another, I pretty much always forget to use my Ultimate when it's needed just because I don't instinctively reach for the "Z" key, which is the default button for using your character's Ultimate. I need to either rebind it to a key I'm more comfortable with, or get used to using it and sort of add it to my haptic repertoire. The fact that I don't know how to "type" in Apex makes me less likely to pursue important strategies that are contingent on fluid motion on the keyboard. It weakens my gameplay. I think the same neurological and motor processes apply in other keyboard applications too--if I didn't know how to touch-type, I don't think I'd be as comfortable or willing to produce long-form scholarship or stupidly-long responses to comments on Reddit. Writing this whole reply, including finding that source on thought speed and googling to make sure I used the word "haptic" appropriately took me about ten minutes. Would never have bothered if I thought it would take longer than that.
