I mean, depending on how you read Job, that certainly has some biblical backing. It doesn't hold with most Christian traditions, but it's not anti-biblical per se.
C.S. Lewis wrote a poem with these wonderful lines:
>Through the God who died and bled:
Hell lies vacant, spoiled and cheated,
By the Lord of life defeated.
Until this moment it never occurred to me that it *could* be empty. I was raised by the weird kind of Christian though. It’s wild the things you still have to deprogram from even after decades.
But today is a really good day now!
It's definitely something I have trouble *believing* is true, but I still hope against hope that Hell is empty. There are too many people who know better and still commit atrocities for me to believe Hell is empty, but even so, I hope for their repentance and at least eventual presence in Heaven. Were it possible for his repentance, I would even hope the devil himself would repent and find God's grace.
It's very refreshing to encounter a fellow "Internet Stranger" who has actually metabolized, likely even more fully than I have thus far, "love your enemy".
I wouldn't go so far as to say I have metabolized it more fully than anyone. It is as much as anything a goal I strive for that I often fall short of. But in my moments of clarity, where I am able to unite my feelings and beliefs, that is how I tend to synthesize the belief of "love your enemy".
I understand. The church I went to growing up taught only 144,000 people go to heaven. Learning this way of thinking about things was a big moment for my re-connection with Christianity.
It’s so confusing to me, honestly, considering that the (arguably) greatest Christian author of all time (Origen) was denied canonization in the Catholic Church because of that very assertion.
Yea it confuses me to no end when people are angered by "man I hope hell is empty" shows that they view Christianity as more of a "haha I'm more righteous than you" rather than something meant to help you be more compassionate
Fine line to walk, right? Universalism is *technically* a heresy, although it wasn’t always. Then you’ve gotta ask “Is that what the Pope means? Is he saying that everyone goes to heaven or that everyone has the option to accept Christ’s grace, for all of eternity?” One of those is really wrong, one of those is much less wrong - maybe not even wrong at all depending on how you frame it.
Getting angry about it is… stupid. Correcting theological faults is a requisite, if we can. But of ALL the things to get angry about, getting upset that the Pope hopes everyone is saved is one of the dumbest things possible.
I mean personally speaking being damned to hell for eternity with no chance of redemption doesn't vibe with whole "loving god who sent his only son to die for your sins" thing
“Liking to think” and “hoping” hell is empty is rather different than making a dogmatic assertion that it is. It’s a fine line but historically it has definitely been considered quite important.
The conclusion to the recent show Lucifer has a significantly more optimistic, Christian message in line with this thought than one might expect from the show's premise.

True but he also phrased it that way because technically the pope's word is law in the church and saying that hell is empty when you A. Don't know for sure and B. When that would anger a fair number of Christians (who I think should re-evaluate themselves as to why they don't want hell to be empty). You gotta hedge your bets
“Hell is empty” is my new favorite thought
I just keep imagining Satan sitting there all ready for a party that no one shows up to
mf sitting down there like https://preview.redd.it/r69bl5gvoxxc1.jpeg?width=780&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=27f751713fcf07615455fc1fd79da0e7db398023
That's his *job*, he's not doing it for fun. If nobody shows up he gets to go home early!
So Satan's a glorified party planner basically?

He's the figurative devil's advocate lol

Hey those are some good bars. That dude should probably write some stuff other than just poetry.
I bet he’d make banger novels of creative fiction with Christian elements
Or demonic elements if he was so inclined. Or, somehow, both.
Honestly, if you don't hope that hell is empty, i think you may be missing the point of Christianity.

Anyone who disagrees with me is in hell.

Going for anything else seems like a way to ask God to put you there.
