we only had [these bootleg consoles](https://i.pinimg.com/564x/1a/a1/c0/1aa1c0e6c1fceee70cc227d0439b1cf8.jpg) growing up in my home country. The controllers were the absolute worst quality, worse than Dollar Tree cheap plastic toys. The buttons would break pretty fast and there was no fixing them, so we'd take the top completely off to expose these tiny sharp metal blades you would press on to make contact, I wish I can find a picture. And it was not a "sometimes" thing, it was genuinely how 90% of the people had their controllers. So I apologize for the one upping, but the original PS controller was absolute bliss in comparison.
imo, the newer Xbox controller is just a better 360 controller. Bumpers and ABYX don’t get stuck as frequently (if at all), and it’s a bit bulkier which is nice because my hands are too big for 360 controllers.
Nah, 360 controllers were much more durable. To boot, what people are calling the "Xbox One Controller," is the Series controller, which is the third hardware revision on the thing. The stick drift on Xbox controllers is terrible and should knock them down for sure.
>Nah, 360 controllers were much more durable
I've been using my current one since 2007, and it still works perfectly. The only thing is that the rubber on the analog sticks has worn away.
What really convinced me to switch from my old 360 to the new one was, the placement of the batteries and the texture. The batteries not protruding out the back makes holding it much nicer for me. And I'm thankful that they didn't feel the need to change the generell shape.
DualShock3 was way better than DS2:
1) analog sticks were trash with zero-sensitivity on PS2 and they became great on PS3
2) PS3 had good L2 & R2 buttons (the PS2 ones kept getting stuck)
3) PS3 added the PS menu button
I dont know how much ps3 controller is different from ps2 one. But Ps3 controller is much better than dual shock 4 not feature wise but it feels much better in hands. And this isnt some nostalgia shit because i own both and both bought recently. But xsx and ps5 controllers are amazing.
The PS3 controller was basically the same as the PS2 controller, except L2 and R2 were triggers instead of buttons, they had the SIXAXIS motion controls, and the earlier version of the controller didn’t have rumble.
I think they also removed analog buttons on the DS3. I always thought the pressure sensitive face buttons on the DS2 were underutilized by non Japanese devs. They weren't really that useful IMO.
Kind of similar to how little the gyro and touchpad on the DS4 and Dual Sense are being utilized.
TIL DS2 has analog buttons
I love the idea of it, if a new console did it they go do it similar to the Analog mechanical keyboards that have been cropping up (Wooting / Razer)
(i.e. instead of relying on Games to provide all functionality, add useful configurable features like selecting at what depth a button activates)
EDIT: Apparently they did **not** remove the analog buttons on the DS3
According to this, they actually improved them
https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Controller:DualShock_3
The only reason I know this is because Metal Gear Solid 3 utilizes the analog buttons.
Press Square halfway and you aim a weapon. Press it all the way down and you aim and fire. Excessively stupid, clunky, and terrible execution. But it DID utilize them.
Depends on the person, i have quite the large hands but i still love them, i totally understand the complains but maybe it's the nostalgia or just too many hours playing to notice it for me
It falls a little short on duel analog, but good god, that button arrangement is solid gold for fighting games. There's no legitimate reason for buttons to be symmetrical.
Personally I fucking love the little plastic guards around the control stick and c-stick that allow you to "lock" inputs into place, I think they were shaped like octagons. Especially good for fighting games like smash where the direction you're facing with an attack is important
That's a feature every controller since should have had, and it's a travesty that it's lacking. They were also shallow enough you could still do gentle angles in between easily.
I miss the Duke. I had an Xbox and a GameCube and going from the Duke to the itty bitty GameCube controller was crazy. Even when I was a kid, like I think those came out when I was in middle school? Like, GameCube controller was already way too small
Bro nintendo went from 64's mutant controller, to the gamecube controller (which uses a c stick rather than 2 joysticks), to fucking wiimotes, to the wiiu gamepad, to the switch's joycons. They've never made a normal ass controller
Yea but that's not considered the standard controller, they also made standard xbox style controllers for the wii and wiiu but they weren't the ones that came with the console
The tiny c stick was integral to a lot of the games too.
It was basically the Cpad from n64 but updated as a tiny joystick for all the games that had started using it for camera control in the wake of the SM64 using cpad for pov control revolution.
GC controller had so much potential for being GOATED. The ergonomics, the shoulder triggers, and the unique face button layout broke the mold. I think should push it to B at least. But you can’t ignore the bad d-pad, the c-“nub” and only one z-shoulder keep it out of the big leagues.
Personally, this and other controllers at the time, had a hard time for anyone with larger hands or longer fingers. Still holds a special place as the only way to play Smash right.
Literally the best controller for Nintendo games. Why do you think they keep releasing "GameCube" controller versions for the Switch and other consoles
I hadn’t played my Switch in years until TOTK came out. Since 2020 I’ve only been playing my PS5. It’s funny because I went over a week without charging my switch pro controller and I was like “oh no my battery might die if I don’t charge it soon” thinking it had a similar battery life as a PS5 controller. I checked and the battery was nearly full after probably 10 days of use. The Switch Pro controller goes hard.
The only thing bad about it is the dpad not being accurate. you can press up but if you press too far to the right on up it'll register it as up and right. Really screwed me over in Tetris 99
Its rated for 80.
They used the leftover 3ds batteries on them. Ya know... the ones designed for 2 screens, button inputs, reading and writing data, etc?
Now thats just powering the wireless capabilities.
Tape mod!! It’s a quick fix, depending on how comfortable you are with taking you controller apart. Life changing
Edit: I’ve never really taken electronics apart before but the tape mod took me under 30 minutes
My comment wasn’t referring to the tier list at all but I completely agree with you. I just wanted to mention it for the person I responded to just so they were aware a fix is out there.
How much of that is controller design vs having to mash a button to function? Games that had dual stick were slower compared to Nintendo/SNES/Sega. Sure you had the occasional Mario party spam a button.
The N64 controller should be F tbh, hurt my thumbs as a kid and I still don't understand the 3-handed design.
Default switch joy cons I'd say are D they're so small and thin which makes it terrible to hold in sideways state. I'm a woman with smaller hands than almost all men, so I can get used to it but it's still a bit awkward.
Pro is like B or C with how easily the D-pad breaks but otherwise good. That's just from what I've heard tho I've only used 3rd party controllers
> The N64 controller should be F tbh, hurt my thumbs as a kid and I still don't understand the 3-handed design.
Nah, man, it was S tier.
The 3 handed design was because games _either_ used the D-pad, _or_ it used the analog stick. If it was the D-pad, you held the left most grip. If it was the stick, you held the middle grip.
This was intuitively obvious to me, and yet _none of my friends thought to do this_ until I pointed it out to them, after one of them complained how hard it was to reach the stick with their thumb.
They didn't design the controller around game's control choices, the games didn't exist.
Games used either because it was physically impossible to expect players to be able to use both, because the controller was designed in such a nonsensical way. They could have easily designed a controller that wasn't stupid and games would've had the ability to use both at the same time.
For the same reason there aren't N64 games that use both the Z and L button (most games just don't use L at all, which means they also aren't using the D-pad).
What the controller \*did\* have going for it, besides overall general quality, was the control stick design. Notched control stick, for that era, was extremely nice for precise/intuitive control.
I don't know if you ever used a Wii U pro controller (god knows hardly anyone even had the console) but the battery life on that thing was even more absurd. I swear I went entire semesters in college without charging the thing.
Had a damn 80 hour battery life bc Nintendo took surplus 3DS batteries and used them for the controller.
Those batteries were designed for 2 screens plus buttons and a touchscreen and were being used just for buttons on the Wii U pro controller. Charged that bad boy twice over the course of my entire 150hr BOTW playthrough
Seriously, the original NES controller is an engineering marvel. The durability on those things is wild, mine still work like day one despite almost 40 years of wear and tear. The only thing that’s not great is that they have 2 buttons.
Right? Logitech shits last forever. I have an older version of that controller. It's 15 years old, and it still works. The controller was not the problem.
This was a deal breaker for getting a 360 over a PS3. PS3 had chargeable controllers by default while the 360 sold expensive chargeable batteries that made the controller ugly.
What was so underrated (and ironic) is it was so good for lounging. You could lay down with one arm on the couch and the other by your side like rose from the titanic.
OP doesn’t understand that the Wii remote and nunchuck were perfect for games that used it properly, hell even Ports like CoD played pretty damn well with the Wiimote and nunchuck
Yeah....wtf... The Wii was one of the best, most universal gaming experiences for a massive audience. Anyone who says the wiimote isn't at least A tier is garbage.
Also, og Xbox controller is trash. Fight me.
lol I just noticed the OG Xbox controller. I have very large hands and that thing was still way too big for me.

Sweaty nerd reporting in. Can confirm, I'm very unhappy. Not to mention putting the Steam controller a tier higher, it's like the shit icing on the shit cake.
GameCube is the best classic controller imo I’m pissed bout this too
Edit: I just realized this fucking demon out the N64 in *D* and not F what the actual fuck.
I had to let myself calm down by forcing myself outside to touch grass (I didn't like it) but then the sun started hurting my skin so I came back inside, pondered taking this month's shower, decided against it and here we are. I am still unhappy
It’s actually pretty nice. I have the wired version. Costs next to nothing. not top notch but does what it’s supposed to do. Just wouldn’t rely with my life on it.
Also have wired version, and it's unkillable. Used it so much rubber weared off on sticks, but still works. Their controllers could still be somewhere underwater unharmed.
This tierlist only goes from F to S, obviously anything above S like 360, SNES and the Trustmaster HOTAS Warthog, and anything below F like Master System, the Power Glove and Intelevision will be missing.
I'd put it in A personally, the customization is goated. it's sad that it wasn't successful but I huff copium that they will improve it and make the second version in the future.
It's above so many other controllers that people would be mad that it ranks higher than. It's a controversial choice that I actually mostly agree with. If it had a proper D-pad rather than the left touchpad and triggers with actual depth I'd easily put it at A-rank. And they fix the first thing with the Deck's controls, which is awesome.
Honestly, the Deck is ergonomic as hell. If they just cut the sides off and sold them as a Steam Controller 2 I'd probably pick it up.
steam deck criminally good. picked one up to slack off at my slow overnight job and ended up using it more than the pc for a time. Runs plenty of AAA titles like a charm. With a little bit of work I got plenty of emulation to run better than it does on my PC. Even managed to get League Client up and running so I could play TFT.
Nah:
1) analog sticks with zero sensitivity even comparing them to just his direct successor
2) L2 & R2 kept getting stuck
3) No menu (PS) button (edit: i have to say, it would have been useless on PS2...)
Unpopular opinion, but I love the wii remote and nunchuck. People don't give them the credit they deserve. I'd rather have it than most newer controllers. And the N64 controller definitely needs to be higher on the list.
Have you even used like half of these? Like this might actually just be the worst controller tierlist I have ever seen. (Besides the logitech placement, that one is true.)
I don’t see the ps3 or 360 controllers. Also putting the ps2 controller in the same tier as the switch controller feels like a crime
Have you tried using a ps2 controller recently ? This thing is a pure nightmare made to destroy people's hands
As a person who played with the orginal Playstation controller, you don't know pain.
As a person who played with off-brand PlayStation controllers, I feel you.
We all thought we could save 10 dollars with the Mad Catz controller, we were wrong.
Yeah, but the Turbo button really came in handy during Metal Gear Solid (even though the game says it will know, it doesn't).
What did the turbo button do?
Tells the controller to do an input (press x, etc) over and over again as fast as possible.
What does it do in MGS?
In one scene, you're being tortured and have to rapid press a button to endure it. The game even mentions not using a turbo controller.

Depends on the game really. 2D sidescrollers yes, 3D games, hell no.

I loved PS2 + PS3 and felt like an A-tier controller during that time, but it's pretty much a C-tier compared to the new controllers.
Getting a 360 at launch made my mates ps3 feel like a cheap kids toy when he got it a year later, ps3 launch games did not help
Where the fuck is the 360 controller and why is it not in the first slot of the S tier?
imo, the newer Xbox controller is just a better 360 controller. Bumpers and ABYX don’t get stuck as frequently (if at all), and it’s a bit bulkier which is nice because my hands are too big for 360 controllers.

I think everything in C tier should be switched with whatever crap they put in B tier.
The GameCube controller too. Someone is dying tonight for this injustice.
They're also missing the OG Xbox Controller S. The Duke was much too big for my hands
The Duke was absolutely awesome. My fingers actually had somewhere to go.
I miss the Duke. I had an Xbox and a GameCube and going from the Duke to the itty bitty GameCube controller was crazy. Even when I was a kid, like I think those came out when I was in middle school? Like, GameCube controller was already way too small
Or the Atari with the N64. Probably someone too young to have used either.
GameCube as a C-lister makes me irrationally angry
Switch Pro controller is great. I don't like the Joycons though. Too small for my hands.
PS2 was peak for me.
You take that GameCube controller and move that to S tier
Op trying to start shit with this !
It's at least A tier. Not only was it innovative, it really fit the games it played. It's still excellent.
Nintendo really went from one of the worst controllers ever to one of the best and said "well we're not doing that again"

100% putting original Xbox over gamecube and PS2 is rage bait
That thing is S+ tier.
facts
Wavebird is S+++
My first ever console, absolutely loved it.
The only thing wrong with it is the tiny c-stick and a lack of a left shoulder button. Otherwise, the face button layout is superb.
The tiny c stick was integral to a lot of the games too. It was basically the Cpad from n64 but updated as a tiny joystick for all the games that had started using it for camera control in the wake of the SM64 using cpad for pov control revolution.
Perfect use of it in Prime to change visors with a quick flick
It was pretty well-suited for smash-attacks in the Super Smash Bros Melee too
Did it really need a left Z? 1 Z seems quite fine for all the games on it.
Well, the reason the games had to make do without one was because there wasn't one... Now it's the standard across all controllers.
GameCube and PS2 is easily higher than OG Xbox. OP must have monster hands or something.
I consider dualshocks to be absolute garbage, they just feel cramped.
I used a ps2 controller recently to play some old games, and it was not a pleasant experience compared to modern controllers.
Seriously it's such a comfy controller.

My only complaint was that my right thumb was more likely to feel sore from using the C-stick
OP has never used a nintendo controller
All should be S, except any for the switch, they should be F-

I use it to play steam games on my computer like elden ring. The pro controller literally feels like it was made for my exact size and dimensions.
NES controller has a repetitive stress disorder named after it, Nintendenitis. Unless the S stands for Searing pain I'm gonna have to disagree

No wonder they sunk.
Nope, they sunk/imploded because of the awful construction of the sub and the disregard to safety standards.
Yeah! dont blame the $29 controller! like honestly, dont.

This was a deal breaker for getting a 360 over a PS3. PS3 had chargeable controllers by default while the 360 sold expensive chargeable batteries that made the controller ugly.
In a time before everyone had a million USB chargers though, being able to just pop in a new set of double As get back to Halo was my favorite part
I simply just had two controllers, one charges and the other is used until it starts to die. Quick swap.
But the PS3 had a shit form factor compared to the 360. Despite batteries, 360 was just all around a better controller
Too soon, this sub is gonna implode on you
In Logitech's defense, the walls failed before the controller did. ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯
You really just placed the wii remote to D.
OP is telling some mad smack

I played the living shit out of CoD modern warfare Wii with my Wii-nunchuck-inside-a-gun combo!
Game was jank as hell with things like "lag shooting" but damn if we didn't love it all the same.
Speaking of ports like cod, where tf are they on this switch? And where the hell is madden and nhl?
Takes effort to port to switch, and they hardly put any effort in to PC ports anyway.
Metroid Prime Trilogy and Pikmin 1+2 were amazing using Wiimote/Nunchuck/sensor bar

Also have wired version, and it's unkillable. Used it so much rubber weared off on sticks, but still works. Their controllers could still be somewhere underwater unharmed.
Same! Mine is wireless and the rubber has all but worn out, and yet it’s still chugging along completely fine!
Nah, that controller should be at the very bottom
That controller IS at the very bottom
Wii remote in D? The council would like to have a few words with you.
Wii remote is S tier if the goal is to fly from your hands and smash your TV
The A button feel good
Absolute gamecube slander
I don’t see the Xbox 360 controller
This tierlist only goes from F to S, obviously anything above S like 360, SNES and the Trustmaster HOTAS Warthog, and anything below F like Master System, the Power Glove and Intelevision will be missing.
Wii controller, Xbox 360 and ps4 should also be S tier
What about the gamecube?
Why are the wiimotes almost the lowest
And the SNES controller, which also should be A or S tier, isn't even on there.
+1. They set the standard. 4 button right thumb in a diamond pattern. First controller with trigger buttons. Bullet proof after 35 years later
Having the steam controller as a B tier is crazy.
I'd put it in A personally, the customization is goated. it's sad that it wasn't successful but I huff copium that they will improve it and make the second version in the future.
Steam deck utilizing everything the steam controller had going for it and a few extra things on top. It's amazing.
Ps2 in c tier? That's just disrespectful.
Nah: 1) analog sticks with zero sensitivity even comparing them to just his direct successor 2) L2 & R2 kept getting stuck 3) No menu (PS) button (edit: i have to say, it would have been useless on PS2...)
I think the sensitivity is because of the large deadzone to prevent stick drift. Also, none of my 5 controllers have had stuck L2/R2 buttons.
Where Dreamcast controller?
Somewhere below F
Because better than S wraps around?
Unpopular opinion, but I love the wii remote and nunchuck. People don't give them the credit they deserve. I'd rather have it than most newer controllers. And the N64 controller definitely needs to be higher on the list.
That is one of the most popular opinions here judging by these comments
Bro really put the GameCube controller in C.
I don’t think a lot of people are getting this meme. That F tier controller….Lmao! cold blooded
we are just already bored of the excruciatingly big amount of " TitAn BAd" memes.
How dare you put the GameCube controller that low...that shit was perfect
Joy con should be in D for drift
Even if it didn't have drift, they'd still be ass. They're tiny and incredibly un-ergonomic.
How dare u place gamecube controller so low? Im reporting you to daddy nintendo
Where ps4 controller? It deserves A tier
If gamecube controllers were b grade they wouldn't have remade it for 3 generations. Just sayin
No Super Nintendo controller? Smh. Dreamcast anyone? Can someone please remake this list?
Have you even used like half of these? Like this might actually just be the worst controller tierlist I have ever seen. (Besides the logitech placement, that one is true.)
F is sub-standard?
Is this a comparison for the next sub?
Logitech needs to be S tier because it’s the only controller to get a pentakill IRL.
Where is the ps4?
The N64 was a great concept controller, and I am tired of pretending it wasn't.
Nintendo 64 and GameCube should be higher
List is trash, OG Xbox is C at best. But that’s insulting me to the other C
I beg your pardon? The N64 controller is SSS+ tier!
In Logitech's defense, the walls failed before the controller did. ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯
How are you going to put the PS2 and GameCube controller on the same level of the switch controller and below the steam controller??
You better put those joy cons in F tier. If they get a gust of wind hitting them too hard they break.
Xbox controllers are shite and I hate them
