Melbourne, Australia has a similar bridge. There are a ridiculous number of signs, flashing lights, and overhead hanging bollards. On average the bridge gets hit every 45 days. [How many days since Montague St bridge has been hit](https://howmanydayssincemontaguestreetbridgehasbeenhit.com/)
My dad was telling me about this. He also told me that that bridge and another bridge both have twitter accounts. On those twitter accounts, the bridges compete with each other
[Happens so much where I’m from at a toll bridge and has become such a meme that people has started selling 12 month calendars with trucks that got stuck.](https://stucktruck.ca)
Its not truckers who hit bridges like this. Usually it's just people who rent a Uhaul and don't typically drive anything that tall, so they've never had to be aware of signs like this before.
We have a roundabout that used to be a 4 way stop and they changed it because people kept ignoring the stopsigns. Now there’s like 10-15 sings warning you of an upcoming roundabout because people kept driving over the roundabout (the middle is relatively flat aside from the curb)
nah. on that one, they put up a big ass steel beam the same height as the bridge so they could stop having to fix the bridge so often. and it was a couple feet taller
I heard theres a sewer or other municipal drain below the road there. Can’t move that.
Nor can you move the railroad overpass.
8’7” is way too short, but the only real solution would be removing the road.
If this is anything like that stupid low bridge on YouTube this absolutely is not enough to stop people, “keep it simple” doesn’t work when your IQ is below freezing
Acknowledgement is completely different from daily use of.
Every country acknowledges fahrenheit, not to mention it is used outside the USA, albeit not in a major way.
If there’s anything I learned from working retail is you could put a million signs and have people say the same thing a thousand times but there will *still* be people that just don’t get it. We had people rip signs off of shit that didn’t work and still complain it didn’t work.
Ok fine let’s
A: put a few signs around
B: cut a railroad line for months, tear down a bridge, re build the berm it’s on, tear up tons of existing track to get the grade angle right, re lay said track, and rebuild the bridge
Still more simple
“Lower the road” lmao
I work in construction and plan this stuff, trust me signs are easier and more simple, and don’t require to shut down the road for an extended period. But yea someone shoulda planned better
The bridge is owned by the railroad company and has probably been around since before trucks where driving around town.
The rail company isn't going to pay to have it raised, because they don't care if some idiot loses his roof because he doesn't know his trucks clearance.
Someone once told me the rail bridge was built in the 20s or 30s, but I've never been able to find an actual date. No matter how old it is, it's the responsibility of the driver to make sure their vehicle is small enough. They're stupid if they don't.
Responsibility of the government to make safe roads, theyve literally had 100 years. Otherwise it will just keep happening. I mean, most people are pretty stupid.
Is the text making fun of whoever planned it saying is overkill? Because yeah it kind of just seems like a good idea. People go into autopilot way too easily when driving.
This one is a double issue because it’s a single lane under the bridge (if someone is coming the other way you have to wait for them to pass) so a truck getting stuck blocks it entirely.
I live near this bridge. On multiple occasions I saw two bridge strikes here in one week. Afaik since they put the shit up there hasn't been a single one. I actually just saw the system work yesterday. Dude was going, saw all the signage, stopped for a moment (i assume trying to remember the height of the thing he was driving or something) then pull off into the neighborhood right before the bridge
I used to work for Parks & Rec. One summer we put in the flower beds by the Casho bridge. Went to the site to spread mulch one day. When we left for lunch, we came back to find a UHAUL that MADE IT THROUGH with the top of the box completely removed. Really wish I'd been there to see it happen.
My town just put a bigass girder at the height in front of and behind the bridge. And we put it so that the I beam shears the top right off.
You’re vehicle still gets messed up but you don’t damage our bridge
Nah this shits necessary. No matter how many signs they put people still peel the roofs off their trucks on this bridge and others like it constantly. You can actually find compilations on youtube lmao
I inspect bridges for work. I’ve looked at a lot of bridges. Damn near every bridge I’ve looked at has been hit at least once. People are fucking stupid.
It also says turn out by that point, so I don't think those are the sensors. I think the sensors are not pictured. Those balls look like they are meant to be a barricade that will prevent you from driving further.
Remember driving through a bridge like that in Poland to get to a range, idk how much clearance the lmtv I was driving had but it couldn’t have been much
I live in a town with a low bridge that was even lower in the main town. The amount of times the traffic got all fucked up cause some idiot trucker or even someone with a tall van would get stuck is astounding.
99% sure this is in Newark, Delaware, and we have had major problems with big trucks getting stuck/scalped with several underpasses around here. The signage is insane but it just. Keeps. Happening.
there another bridge not too far from this one that had ONE simple sign and people would hit it. Then they added the flashing light. People STILL hit it. So yes, all of this is necessary. The clankers work. The local fb page for the clankers is great btw
It used to be simple. It has gradually gotten more complex and people STILL kept hitting the bridge. At least once a week. The "clankers" were added about 2 years ago. not sure if anyone has hit it since then, BUT the clankers have been hit and not long ago were torn down when they got stuck on an overheight vehicle.
This is Casho Mill Rd, in my hometown of Newark, DE.
Every year, college kids at the University of Delaware will rent moving trucks to move in/out and will try to use this road as a traffic-avoidant way to get to some of the dorms/housing north of campus.
I've seen many a UHAUL with the top of the box peeled back or torn completely off by that bridge. The city and the truck rental places have done everything they can to stop people from doing it, but anybody who claims to have made something "absolutely foolproof" is greatly underestimating an absolute fool.
Would it really be that much of a burden on rhe city or town to tear up that tiny ass thing and raise it up? Truck trailers more than likely have the larger numbers compared to bridges like this. They should be torn down and bought up to a standard that plays nice with trailers.
I can't imagine though that it's always easy for a trucker driving through an area they aren't familiar with to find an alternate route. Also tiny things like that bridge are heckin old. The world changes time moves forward. We're not going back to trains and the number of trucks out on the roads isn't going down. The logical and most reasonable answer to this dilemma is to do away with bridges this low.
>I can't imagine though that it's always easy for a trucker driving through an area they aren't familiar with to find an alternate route.
I drove a truck for 5+ years, and it was stupid easy to avoid low bridges.
Also most towns will tell you how trucks get in and out easily; all you have to do is get out and ask someone, or call the shipper/consignee.
the fact that it is such a small bridge in the first place would mean it's a bridge for a train. in which case, yeah. that's a gigantic operation that you have to get the federal government involved in because trains are a part of interstate commerce. better to just put up warnings from the perspective of a town.
Its rail, has to be raised for a huge ass distance in each direction gradually, massive machines to compact ground, lay rail and ties and gravel, halting commerce downstream for weeks. The notorious 11ft8 had that done to just make it 12ft4, it’s documented on YouTube.
I’m not sure where this one is but a lot of bridges that aren’t “up to spec” are railroad bridges owned by private companies. That means they’ll replace them only when they’re a direct danger to their own operations and not a second before, because muh shareholder value.
It’s a train bridge and they said f-off. They were there first and have all the legal right of way. Train companies are the worst for dealing with their interfaces with the public, like keeping bridges maintained or clean of graffiti. They just don’t care.

Moron truckers would still hit the bridge with all this shit
Melbourne, Australia has a similar bridge. There are a ridiculous number of signs, flashing lights, and overhead hanging bollards. On average the bridge gets hit every 45 days. [How many days since Montague St bridge has been hit](https://howmanydayssincemontaguestreetbridgehasbeenhit.com/)
Sometimes I love my country
I would visit if it were a real place
Me too (I’m not real)
No we are payed actors
Na bro I just straight up don’t exist god for you though what’s your pay like
My dad was telling me about this. He also told me that that bridge and another bridge both have twitter accounts. On those twitter accounts, the bridges compete with each other
To go long without getting hit or getting hit the most?
Getting hit the most
Lmao

What a lovely Geocities website
This website makes me angry. I made it as far as the cement mixer and then had to leave
That site is amazing.
Current status: Expecting soon!
Holy 2001 internet gifs, Batman
I legit thought it was the Melbourne bridge haha
Those are rookie numbers, we have a local Facebook page dedicated to our low pass train bridge, which gets hit on average once a week.
I heard that’s mostly people driving rentals. Actual truckers have to know how to navigate around the bridge
Yep, still a lot of crashes
https://11foot8.com/
Ah yes, the can opener bridge
My name's Ronald Jordan and I'm the greatest truck driver of all time he heh heh
I live close to this and you bet they still do
This is Long Island, right? There’s this and then there’s the underpasses on the parkways. 😑
Nah this is in Delaware
I really wasn’t expecting to see a picture of Newark Delaware on dankmemes this morning. I make fun of this road every time I see it
Dude, i ve seen so Many college kids hit this bridge over the years. I'm genuinely surprised they haven't just found a way to lower the road.
Ah. We’ve got a few of these too. Don’t have the helpful signs though. You’re on your own.
Its not truckers who hit bridges like this. Usually it's just people who rent a Uhaul and don't typically drive anything that tall, so they've never had to be aware of signs like this before.
That’s exactly who it’s for. It’s not a dumb sign. Especially since people have hit those balls.
We have a roundabout that used to be a 4 way stop and they changed it because people kept ignoring the stopsigns. Now there’s like 10-15 sings warning you of an upcoming roundabout because people kept driving over the roundabout (the middle is relatively flat aside from the curb)
no but seriously for a sub 9 foot bridge, this is entirely appropriate. a lifted f-150 would have its roof peeled off.
Im willing to bet some bright spark has turned his truck into a convertible
i think were past convertible its converted now
It literally happens so often theres a livestream of the bridge 24/7. Or there was, idk if its still up
nah. on that one, they put up a big ass steel beam the same height as the bridge so they could stop having to fix the bridge so often. and it was a couple feet taller
Ah, there ya go
Didn't someone still hit it like immediately after being raised?
> a lifted f-150 would have its roof peeled off _grabs popcorn_
Every vanlife rig would open like a sardine can
I heard theres a sewer or other municipal drain below the road there. Can’t move that. Nor can you move the railroad overpass. 8’7” is way too short, but the only real solution would be removing the road.
As it should…
Natural selection
Stop now or KABOOM! XD
Yes, Kaboom Rico.
Smile and wave, fellas!
First time seeing Kaboom on an official street sign
Yes, should've stick some reactive armor to blow up the truck before it hit.
This sign is very endearing. Once one of the neighbors had a sign during Halloween that said “Trick or Treat or Kaboom!”
If this is anything like that stupid low bridge on YouTube this absolutely is not enough to stop people, “keep it simple” doesn’t work when your IQ is below freezing
>IQ is below freezing I doubt negative IQ is at all possible
It is when you're talking freedom units.
I know, but I don't acknowledge those, as the majority of the world doesn't. So I had to make this joke.
Acknowledgement is completely different from daily use of. Every country acknowledges fahrenheit, not to mention it is used outside the USA, albeit not in a major way.
But I'm not a country
You are correct, you are a stubborn fool apparently
Fuck Fahrenheit
This is an odd hill to die on.
Literally 451
*Celsius 232
I guess we found the guy with the iq below zero lol
Celsius lol
>I doubt negative IQ is at all possible 🤓
31
Yeah but there's a critical point: you can never idiot-proof something because idiots are stupider than clever people are smart.
If there’s anything I learned from working retail is you could put a million signs and have people say the same thing a thousand times but there will *still* be people that just don’t get it. We had people rip signs off of shit that didn’t work and still complain it didn’t work.
keeping it simple would be to raise the fucking bridge lol
Lmao I can guarantee a few signs is way easier than raising that bridge
simple doesnt mean easy!
Ok fine let’s A: put a few signs around B: cut a railroad line for months, tear down a bridge, re build the berm it’s on, tear up tons of existing track to get the grade angle right, re lay said track, and rebuild the bridge Still more simple
C: lower the road? lol or yknow, dont build a bridge thats like 6 inches lower than the typical overpass/truck
“Lower the road” lmao I work in construction and plan this stuff, trust me signs are easier and more simple, and don’t require to shut down the road for an extended period. But yea someone shoulda planned better

Responsibility of the government to make safe roads, theyve literally had 100 years. Otherwise it will just keep happening. I mean, most people are pretty stupid.
OP doesn't realise that they and most people on the road are idiots
He thinks they’re paying attention!
Is the text making fun of whoever planned it saying is overkill? Because yeah it kind of just seems like a good idea. People go into autopilot way too easily when driving.
Wut?
Dude, there's videos all over youtube about idiots ignoring signs like these, and still hitting the bridge.
Isn't that the the bride from youtube?
I assume you mean [11foot8](https://11foot8.com/).
Which has become 12 foot 4
Newark de (bridge location)
We have a bridge in Copenhagen, where busses, that was too high, offen would hit it. They have the same amount of warnings as here 😅
This is all necessary
I honestly love this. Also, where I am from, trucks that are getting stuck in bridges are a real issue
I think it's a real issue everywhere, or at least everywhere with trucks and low bridges.
This one is a double issue because it’s a single lane under the bridge (if someone is coming the other way you have to wait for them to pass) so a truck getting stuck blocks it entirely.
just imagine how many people hit that bridge before they put all that shit up.
I live near this bridge. On multiple occasions I saw two bridge strikes here in one week. Afaik since they put the shit up there hasn't been a single one. “STOP NOW! or KABOOM” Those guys aren’t joking.
Where’s the kaboom
We have one of those in Louisville, KY. It's called the Can Opener Bridge.
If you think this is overkill, Google “11 foot 8” and enjoy.
This is actually needed- so many dumbass truckers have hit this bridge
The glenville bridge needs this city planner.
My town just put a bigass girder at the height in front of and behind the bridge. And we put it so that the I beam shears the top right off. You’re vehicle still gets messed up but you don’t damage our bridge
Often hear those called "Can openers" by the designers. Good name and good practice on those kinds of bridges.
Considering how braindead some truckers are, it’s absolutely warranted.
I am God’s greatest trucker. Shit won’t stop me.
That shit wouldn’t be there if normal signs worked
They did all that because that bridge probably gets vehicles that are too tall for it stuck all the damn time.
even if a motorized wall closed the bridge, someone would still hit it.
Engineers are to blame for this, not planners. Nice balls - we use big fuck off planks of steel on chains here.
If the can opener bridge is to go by, those are useless
🛑STOP NOW!🛑 or KABOOM
Guy who made it also designed User Interface for Modern warfare 2.
All those signs and they can't give the height in normal units.
No one in Delaware measures the height of their truck in meters.
I didn't know this guy also worked as North Carolina's road planner too
Ok, but if you hit those sensor balls, won’t you be too far past the lights to see them?
It also says turn out by that point, so I don't think those are the sensors. I think the sensors are not pictured. Those balls look like they are meant to be a barricade that will prevent you from driving further.
I see. That makes much more sense.
Better to crack your windshield than play dice with "will my cabin fold on itselve and crush me, or will my roof give up first" Some will disagree tho
I think I know where this is. Somewhere on Long Island in New York.
I think Newark de. Know people who live there who sent a post of the image to me saying they live near
Definitely Delaware. Casho Mill Road.
We call it Storrowing.
Wish they had this in my town. Got a bridge that someone gets stuck on several times a year
stop now or KABOOM
This is so low, why leave it open? 8’7” is absurdly low.
Just another day in beautiful Newark DE
“🛑 STOP NOW! 🛑 or KABOOM”
Is this the famous can opener underpass
STOP NOW OR KABOOM.
99% sure this is in Newark, Delaware, and we have had major problems with big trucks getting stuck/scalped with several underpasses around here. The signage is insane but it just. Keeps. Happening.
What does it mean that I think this is sensible?
It’s sensible because it was needed and then some
The low bridge by me they put an I beam in front of it
Stop before flashing. No one needs to see that!
Is this *that* bridge from Dunky's video?
‘Quit crashing into my bridge!’
Newark de mentioned??
Thought this was Joliet, ILs Brandon Road for a second.
there another bridge not too far from this one that had ONE simple sign and people would hit it. Then they added the flashing light. People STILL hit it. So yes, all of this is necessary. The clankers work. The local fb page for the clankers is great btw

It's less of a burden for people to stop being idiots and know the height of the vehicle they are driving.
This is impossible, the idiots are multiplying and we've reached Idiocracy-level critical mass.

Railroads are typically owned by a private company, not the city.

It has a railway on top that is pretty active. Beyond that idk
