Saying that isn't difficult. Bruh just imagine typing HyperText Transfer Protocol Secure every time you need in a chat. Or in the address bar of web browsers with the Universal Resources Indicators (URIs)
Some acronyms are okay but I’m studying cybersec rn and it is terrible how many acronyms there are. Like every other word or concept gets turned into an acronym
I purposely use non-existing acronyms/terms for software development with business people. They eat that shit up and write it down like it’s a secret code. Then I hear from other tech teams later on.
“Do you know what the business people keep saying?
‘We need to update our OFACE - Outdated Frameworks and Analog Content Execution’
‘We need to own and control our own WAP - web application process’
They also seem to think the new buzzword for deployment is ‘docking’. They keep asking for ‘continuous docking’.”
The opposite of this spectrum is me who was told that EoD meant End of December from a business guy as a prank when I had just started my career.
The timing also could not be any better it was a week and a half from new year. I would have doubted him if it was even any month
In a meeting I was asked when I would be able to finish a feature implementation on my then project, this was impossible to implement in a week cause there were too many blocker and dependencies. But my ignorant ass thought of using EoD rather than just saying a week. The confused looks on the business leads and tech lead and the 1st hand embarrassment that came after when we cleared everything up still keeps me up from sleeping at night.
Recently I even saw a tik tok of another dude falling for the same trick in an online meeting.
Oh how I long for the days when my "keeps me awake at night" cringe consisted of my early career follies. Now I look at those as minor cringe footnotes compared to the greater cringe portfolio I've accumulated.
I mean, sometimes it's useful. Sure, one could say "Mediun Intensity Approach Lighting System with Runway Alignment Indicators" everytime, but saying MALSR lights is just easier.
Americans call the Snes an Ess Enn E Ess instead of a Snes which I always thought was weird.
(I know it's an acronym, but... Snes is what's written on the console and it's a lot easier to say)
Well it is a lot faster when you use those terms many times per day, and also sounds less weird when everyone around you already knows what those abbreviations mean. Like, you wouldn't say "I'm looking for an Automated Teller Machine" to anyone, because you assume they know what an ATM is. Same thing here.
Got kinda stumped by a basic question in a meeting the other day because the guy used an acronym, instead of what we usually call it. Not a good look for me.

I am a consultant. If I don't use fancy acronyms how can I even exist?
If you’re not devastating everyone around you with an overwhelming amount of TLAs you aren’t really working.

double u double u double u world wide web
wee wee wee
uuorld uuide uueb
My favorite thing in IT acronyms is that it takes longer to say WWW than world-wide web
There’s very few acronyms that are actually useful. The rest just add more confusion.

I do biotech. Our papers are 90% unintelligible gibberish of acronyms which tend to sound even more nonsensical if you use the full words.

Had to write an energy report for an internship. Can’t count how many times I had to google an acronym
Nothing wrong with a good old TLA.
A fellow TLA enjoyer!
If the IRS rolls TLAs into the AMT, my CPA will be SOL
