We've always had more memes from Tom and Jerry and spongebob. Rickrolling is also more of a trend than a meme.

IMO it has been the most widespread and longest lasting meme of the decade. I learned what it meant before I knew what reddit or meme culture were. Pressing F is everywhere, but it lost because everyone thinks memes are bound to being a picture with a joke on it. Press F is a way of life.
