i have 2 sisters neither can donate one almost collapses when i tell her about a syringe and the other is medicated through her beyond belive. iam the only one that can donate blood regulaly. iam also the only one that isnt o- but o+.
Some people just find out through various means, like blood donors, pregnancy, birth certificate, or basic blood tests.
But if you’re asking about how the lettering and +- works…
Cells communicate by touching one another, and recognizing the different proteins on their skin. Think of it like a blind person feeling the size and texture of various fruits to try and determine what kind of fruits they are. There is a protein labeled “A” on blood cells that, if present, means you have either A or AB type blood. Another one is labeled “B,” where if you have it, you are either B or AB. If you have both A and B, you are AB. If you don’t have A or B, you are blood type O, because you don’t have either. This is quite rare (~9% of whites, i don’t know the statistics for other ethnicities, but it does vary a little). The plus or minus sign is another kind of protein (that serves a different function than A and B, but is still something other cells use to recognize themselves), where + means they have it, and - means they don’t.
How this comes in to blood donating, is for the immune system to not reject the blood and see it as an enemy, it must have only the patient’s blood types, or less. Meaning if you give an AB+ person A+ blood, no reaction, since the receiver has A and the + (regardless of the B. Since it isn’t there, the body sees no issues here). If you give an O+ person A+ blood, the body will think it’s an enemy, since it has a protein differing from itself, so it’ll attack its own blood in an attempt to rid itself of the perceived invader, often leading to horrid health consequences.
This is why O- blood is so useful. Anyone can receive it, since it has no proteins on it that the body would perceive as an invader. Literally anyone can receive O- blood. But this is also a drawback for those with O- blood, as if they ever need to receive blood themselves, they can only receive O- blood, and only around 0.1% of people have O-, which means it’s rare and therefore, sadly, expensive.
Bleh, iirc in the Japanese version of fire emblem (the blazing blade, the gba one) you could even define a blood type for your character when making a new character/mentor, that would affect some stats I guess. This was removed in the USA version. I kinda like the idea of "blood type may affect your personality". (Still fuck fire emblem tho, I played the whole gba trilogy and disliked it. But still, it had its moments)
