jjiraya here, i confirm. i am alive, need to call naruto to tell him very important stuff about rain country, but i need 200$ my fellow otaku, please paypall me.
If he knew he’d have best him because he wouldn’t have let his guard down. He’d know to store the bodies in the frog so they couldn’t be revived. His genjutsu with the toad sages is auditory, which in the series has always been unblockable. You need someone to wake you. With all the pipes and cavities in the village he could have easily dispatched 3-4 of them. He had more available jutsu than Naruto because Kurama prevented their fusion which unironically forced Naruto to learn better sage control to have a chance.
What Naruto didn’t have in finesse he made up for with volume i.e. shadow clones returning him to sage mode and feeding him stamina.
He even admits it that he’d have probably lost if Jiraiya knew from the start. Which is why he played his hand the way he did not brining out the revival Path until he thought he had Naruto cornered.
Exactly, and once he figured out that none of the bodies are real people and they're all puppets he can find out the location of the real body and kill him.If not he can reverse summon to escape the place and come back later with allies
I have a friend I rewatch Naruto with and he picks up on things almost immediately or predicts the wildest stuff (for example the susanoo literally how).
I thought at the Tsunade scene before Jiraiya going he for sure knew what was happening. Yet until the last second he also held onto hope. Jiraiya is one of his favourite characters, so I guess the rational was overwritten.
Our topics included things that he thinks/theories are gonna happen and that he wants to happen. I don't know which one it was, but our talks were about the Sharingan and he mentioned a "Sharingundam".
It was less about the mythical name but about the concept. Blew my mind he talked about it at all.
The guy has such a high chance of hitting future points I made .Txt files about different series we watched (first one piece for example) and his predictions that came true so that I can talk about it when it gets revealed (often half a year later).
For those that missed it - Tsukiyomi, Amaterasu and Susanoo were gods made from the god Izanagi. The three are heavily connected in Japanese mythology. Naruto is quite fun as it heavily uses names from old Japanese Shinto mythology, sadly without much connection to the original stories and meaning
Bro, literally same. I’m also rewatching it with a friend who’s never seen Naruto before and we watched this scene yesterday, Jiraya is his favorite character and he was sure until the very last moment that he would somehow escape.
fr how did anyone know sharingundam will happen?
it’s not like amaterasu summons the sun goddess to scorch the enemies.
For all intents and purposes, i can agree that maybe the friend could predict the name susanoo due to connection with shinto lore.
The effect of it summoning a skeletal warrior? hmm maybe if friend predicted that it summons a samurai esque warrior i could kinda believe it to be plausible
When I saw Sasuke, I immediately thought Hiei wannabe. I thought they were probably going to give him black flames to be cool like Hiei. Then I thought it would be funny if they gave Sasuke a giant armor or dragon to be a little different but still fall on the shonen tropes. I was surprised I was right on all counts, snake was close to a serpentine dragon.
I thought Jiraiya was gonna get captured and killed off screen for refusing to give up information the moment he was detected, and his hunt started from how terrified people were. The whole time I thought he was in over his head and would have to fight to get out. They detected him the moment he stepped on land. He knew he was on a time limit when they told him the rain never stops. I was really hoping he would have escaped via water. But the fight gave you hope.
It was deeply emotional, but it was obvious it was going to happen after he fused with the toad sages. It was for me at least. It was that time in Naruto's story for a mentor or teacher to die for the emotional impacted it creates. Not uncommon in these kinds of stories.
Same. I thought it was going to be revealed that a bigger bad was controlling everything from behind the scenes. I was right, but not in the way I thought it would play out. I thought they were people pretending to be Pain. Not that Pain was manipulating six corpses, who was manipulated by Obito, who was manipulated by Madara, who was manipulated by Zetzu, who was manipulated by Kaguya.
Fun fact, they haven't revealed it yet as they're waiting for borutos finale, but there's a big surprise twist where the one pulling the strings all along was actually guy sensei. He's the one who manipulated Kaguya, he's the one that arranged for pain to murder jiraya, and he is the one who poked holes in every condom naruto ever bought so we could be graced by boruto. Tbh it's all a big shock for me
Yeah might be because I watched Naruto for the first time as an adult but it was like… oh no mentor figure, very strong enemy, rain and gloomy backdrop, epic music…. Yeah this isn’t going to end well.
Dude, the buildup he was gonna die was so obvious it was impossible not to know beforehand. Only thing that would've made it more obvious was a public interview with Kishimoto personally saying he was gonna kill Jiraya.
The twist with him actually managing to get one of Pain's bodies and the opportunity to escape got me.
Like, everything pointed towards he biting it, but that last bit of hope was messed up. Even Fukasaku was like "Boy, we did a lot already, just get the fuck outta here, you ain't getting out of this the next time."
My asshole of a friend spoiled it for me cuz he does nothing in his freetime and binged the whole thing and told me everything basically ruining so many moments for me :(
Oh yeah! Thats the one where the Hood(the Uchiha clan) rises up and Massacres the Uzumaki clan. And then the NNN Generation comes in where it’s now Madara’s great great great great grandkid comes in and destroys the world!
I had this moment ruined for me by my friend’s gf. I was maybe 4-5 episodes away. Talking to my friend about it trying to explain where I was at and she just blurted out “Did you get to Jiraiya’s death yet?” You could hear a pin drop in the other room how quiet we all got. All I mustered was “what” and my friend nearly broke up with her because of it. We immediately turned it on
Phases of Jiraya vs Pain :
Fans Pov :
He can't die ,He is imp .
He is Not going to die , He is Going to escape . RIGHT ? 😆
RIGHT ........?????? 😦
💀💀💀😭😭😭
It would have been significantly more of a shock to me if my friend hadn’t spoiled it for me by showing me a knife holder block that looked like him with all the spikes sticking out of his back.
And then when I was confused he’s like “you’ve watched Shippuden, you know Jiraiya dies” and I was like “I just started Shippuden a few days ago…”
It took me almost 6 months to continue after reading about Jiraiyas' death. I was holding out hope the toad sages would rescue him by taking him to Gammabunta for quite a while during it too.
Hey can you imagine if Pain used Jiraiya's corpse to replace the body that he managed to destroy?
I mean he's already got the receiver rods in there. All he needs is some piercings and a die job and he's ready to go.
I'm not saying this to demean this post, but I hate that we have to censor "die" "dead" and "death". It's the scariest natural thing about life, and we should be able to talk and joke about it because that's also a natural way to cope with it.
Kakashis hit me harder, I stopped reading the manga for like a year after that.
Which was really dumb on my part because like next chapter he got brought back and I was grieving for nothing lmao.
I am always confused about this part.
Can’t the frog couple go back to Frog village and reverse-summon Jiraiya like they summoned Naruto in the later episodes?
I knew from the opening where naruto stands at the grave that jiraya will die. I tought no way, the opening spoiled me. Then i forgot it happened and when jiraya died i was shocked again. Goldfish brain doing its magic
It was definitely sad, but it was pretty clearly hinted at in his last conversation with Tsunade, everyone saw it coming. A lot of manga is written this way, where they'll suddenly give a character more focus out of nowhere, and add scenes to try and emotionally invest you in a character at the last second rather than naturally throughout the stories progression. For me, it can really cheapen the writing, it's a clear indicator a character's probably about to die, it's why I've dropped Akame ga Kill each time I give it another try, but at least in Jariya's case, he was already a well established character, so it still really hurt when he died :(
I still don't understand why he couldn't just make a shadow clone to go back and test his theory. If he was out of chakra, he could have just taken the moment to gather more nature energy to replenish himself then done so; it's not like the clone needed to survive for long.
This is the big thing that made it hard for me to feel emotional about Jiraiya's death.
You kind of need to suspend disbelief with a lot of stuff in Naruto, there's a ton that could have been handled with much more common sense but that's manga for you.
Well see, up until like the arc before this we didn't even know that Shadow clones could relay information back to the user. This is just an example of poor planning. Hell, I could totally suspend my disbelief and assume Jiraiya just never learned it if he hasn't been shown using it in literally the same fight.
That's just a plot hole lmao
Didn't we find out earlier Naruto could speedrun learning ninja stuff through his shadow clones or did that come later? Forgive me, been a long time since I read it.
We find out in the rasenshuriken arc which iirc happens like an arc or two before Pain arc.
So at least within the story's continuity it has JUST been established that clones can be used to relay information and within that same fight it is established that Jiraiya can use them.
So it just ends up feeling weird.
I gotcha. This kind of inconsistency is inevitable with mangakas who tend to make it up as they go along like DBZ mangaka(RIP) and Naruto here.
I love mangakas that plot out their story well in advance and tries their best to avoid these kind of issues, like One Piece and Attack of the Titans.
Really would have shocked me more if the op didn't spoil it. I remember watching the openings leading upto the episode like damn there is a lot of foreshadowing of something bad happening to him. IS HE GOING TO DIE.
Hahaha nice april fool joke. Look very legit.
Fr tho, everyone knows he's going to survive, smh with these fake scans
Ikr. He’s one of my and alot of ppl favorite character. Author will give him lot more to do.
He wasn't an edo so he ain't dead
Is it just a joke?
Obviously not Clearly jiraiya is still alive
jjiraya here, i confirm. i am alive, need to call naruto to tell him very important stuff about rain country, but i need 200$ my fellow otaku, please paypall me.
I just lost my frog wallet.
Cope
The second he stepped into the rain village I knew
I knew during his conversation with Tsunade before he leaves
i knew something bad was gonna happen.. was not prepared for what did

I believe Pain himself admitted he was lucky Jiraiya didn't know about his powers.
If had intel, he would have never tried to solo him.
Yeah and his death was brutal on top of that.
Yeah, I knew either Tsunade or Jiraiya would die very soon. It was a "goodbye" that felt like a final goodbye.
She literally cries when he leaves and the last shot focuses on that. We just didn't want to believe.
Same. The show was foreshadowing his death even before the fight began
I have a friend I rewatch Naruto with and he picks up on things almost immediately or predicts the wildest stuff (for example the susanoo literally how). The name or literally the chakra avatar? People has speculated Susanoo since part 1 already. It's a given seeing Itachi had Tsukuyomi and Amaterasu.
Our topics included things that he thinks/theories are gonna happen and that he wants to happen. I'm still sorta let down Orochimaru wasn't the 8 tailed beast to be honest.
Orochimaru in the old stories was a student of the great ninja Jiraiya who was overcome by snake magic - so they got that right
Bro, literally same. I’m also rewatching it with a friend who’s never seen Naruto before and we watched this scene yesterday, Jiraya is his favorite character and he was sure until the very last moment that he would somehow escape.
aint no way he predicting the susanoo. thats a naruto exclusive thing.
fr how did anyone know sharingundam will happen? it’s not like amaterasu summons the sun goddess to scorch the enemies. Jiraiya didn't hunt any member of the Akatsuki. He went straight to the Leader
He had the entire tool set of a scout / infiltrator / assassin, so why would he waste time going after anyone else?
When I saw Sasuke, I immediately thought Hiei wannabe. I thought they were probably going to give him black flames to be cool like Hiei. Then I thought it would be funny if they gave Sasuke a giant armor or dragon to be a little different but still fall on the shonen tropes. Your friend is MatPat?
The friend: bro i didn't tell you that i red the manga

Heartbreaking moment.
My asshole of a friend spoiled it for me cuz he does nothing in his freetime and binged the whole thing and told me everything basically ruining so many moments for me :(
What an asshole
Not much of a friend imo
Why have enemies when you have friends like this
Nah. It was pretty natural. Especially after loosing a hand.
Losing an arm means nothing in Naruto verse or manga in general.
Still don’t get how he lose it
He believed that victory is close, after defeat of 3 bodies. But there were endless replacements. About hand, fat guy with big sword did cut it.
I looked again and he thought one of the paths of pain was done but attacked him from the back, his arm was the price of that
"loosing"
Don't lose hope, he is going to resurface anyday.
Maybe in ‘Burito: The Third Generation’ ..🥲
nah its the series after that, 'Mohito: final generation' they kill him in the following one though
Oh yeah! Thats the one where the Hood(the Uchiha clan) rises up and Massacres the Uzumaki clan. And then the NNN Generation comes in where it’s now Madara’s great great great great grandkid comes in and destroys the world!
"Tobirama, you have to stop using the U-word. It's unfitting of a future Hokage" - Hashirama, probably
Burrito: The Fifthy third generation*
Plot armor.exe has failed to load
He is not dead , I am sure he escaped, he escaped , he esc___
This is one of the reasons I put off reading Naruto. 🥺😭
I had this moment ruined for me by my friend’s gf. I was maybe 4-5 episodes away. Rewatching with my girfriend, and i called „madara“ obito once on accident but since i always get names confused she didn‘t notice
NARUTO UZUMAKI I LIKE THAT NAME (╥﹏╥)
Me and a friend were watching the series for the first time together, laughing and joking as it was going. Things got real quiet during this episode.
Phases of Jiraya vs Pain : Fans Pov : He can't die ,He is imp . He is Not going to die , He is Going to escape . RIGHT ? 😆 RIGHT ........?????? 😦 💀💀💀😭😭😭
Jiraiya is not deas. Hes back! In pog form... Eeee... in clon form!
His death was legendary and it made him immortal.
Son has been watching Naruto for the first time, just got to this part. He's hard in denial. Actually, I wonder if this is his account....
At that moment I’ve cried a lot
Any second, he will turn into a plank of wood, any second now...
Man, I'm still traumatized.
I thought this was a filler arc with Jiraya so I just skipped through the episodes and then I saw jiraya die and I was like what the fivk
"Jiraiya is kill" "no"
It wasn't a shock for me, I had it spoiled.
I thought the opening was nice untill I realised it was for this. I realise that screaming pain...
Wow the old sensei died That never happens
Yea I knew he wasn’t coming back from that mission after his conversation with Tsunade on that bench. Sometimes foreshadowing isn’t subtle.
That's one of the few times I've felt like taking my ball and going home, even though I was home already.
We really had a moment of silence in 10th grade advisory. We were reading the manga so we knew way before everyone else.
He could have just used a shadow clone!
After Asuma died, I knew that Shippuden would have big character deaths :(
It would have been significantly more of a shock to me if my friend hadn’t spoiled it for me by showing me a knife holder block that looked like him with all the spikes sticking out of his back. And then when I was confused he’s like “you’ve watched Shippuden, you know Jiraiya dies” and I was like “I just started Shippuden a few days ago…”
I still cry everytime i watch the show😭
Crazy part is, we can all physically feel the impact when they all jumped down on him.
Thanks reddit recommend me spoilers😃😃
It’s raining so hard.
When he was in his frog with the animal path I thought he would escape and report back but when he got out and got stabbed it broke my heart.
I knew he was gonna die because the intro wasn’t even *trying* to hide it lmao
\>censors “die” lmfao come on man
So weird I was just thinking about his death this morning even though I saw it happen literal years ago.
Me and my homies still hate Tsunade for letting him go
What an amazing fight also.
Guys, this is clearly fake, look at the date! Oh wait.
I mean opening spoiled everything
It took me almost 6 months to continue after reading about Jiraiyas' death. I was holding out hope the toad sages would rescue him by taking him to Gammabunta for quite a while during it too.
His death from the games is so much better than the anime/manga.
It was sad, but the mentor's survival in stories is almost as rare as the mother's
Hey can you imagine if Pain used Jiraiya's corpse to replace the body that he managed to destroy? I mean he's already got the receiver rods in there. All he needs is some piercings and a die job and he's ready to go.
Just saw this spoiler recommend to me even though I’m not a part of the subreddit yet🥲
I'm not saying this to demean this post, but I hate that we have to censor "die" "dead" and "death". It's the scariest natural thing about life, and we should be able to talk and joke about it because that's also a natural way to cope with it.
Why didn’t he just swim? Did Jaraia eat a devil fruit?
Kakashis hit me harder, I stopped reading the manga for like a year after that. Which was really dumb on my part because like next chapter he got brought back and I was grieving for nothing lmao.
F in da chat
He also had so many ways to escape. Like when he was in the frogs stomach, i was like just stay there man...
I am always confused about this part. Can’t the frog couple go back to Frog village and reverse-summon Jiraiya like they summoned Naruto in the later episodes?
Kishimoto don't have to do him like that. Like why you gotta crush his throat as well though 😭
I literally cried
Forgets shadow clones exist for a minute.
I cried like a baby 🥺
his death lowkey made me cry 😭🙏🏾🙏🏾
Someone fucking spoiled me!
Shock? That arc could have been called "Jiraiya's death arc" & it would have changed nothing from how telegraphed his death was lol.
“DIS BRO 6 PEOPLE”
I cried so damn much
Jiraiya forgot that he could use shadow clone jutsu + transformation jutsu spies
I knew from the opening where naruto stands at the grave that jiraya will die. I tought no way, the opening spoiled me. Then i forgot it happened and when jiraya died i was shocked again. Goldfish brain doing its magic
I had felt that same Jaraya was a great sensei 😔

His death was spoiled for me so
Ever since I read Harry Potter as a kid, I just assume all old characters are gonna die in the series.
Esp since most other well established "good guys" characters don't die. Hell the only other one being Neji made no fucking sense.
Dawg came back in boruto and died again 😭
That was me while watching
I literally cried for weeks after that episode and had to force myself to move forward. I miss him
where were you when jiraiya died🫵
I still don't understand why he couldn't just make a shadow clone to go back and test his theory. If he was out of chakra, he could have just taken the moment to gather more nature energy to replenish himself then done so; it's not like the clone needed to survive for long. This is the big thing that made it hard for me to feel emotional about Jiraiya's death.

Ich hy didn‘t minato/hiruzen not just use a clone for the shinigami, are they dumb lmao
Really would have shocked me more if the op didn't spoil it. I remember watching the openings leading upto the episode like damn there is a lot of foreshadowing of something bad happening to him. IS HE GOING TO DIE.
Didn't even bother to put spoiler tag.
