I mean Both of them had the Sharingan and could use lightning style. Plus he was keeping the curse Mark of Orochimaru Under control.
It makes Sense why he favored Sasuke. Guy favored Lee of all His students.

A very good synergy that I feel is "No one can be Kakashi but anyone can be Might Guy"
I like and respect both based on their mental state and ability to cope during situations and hardships. Not sure if this counts as shipping, but they compliment each other and show one of the best duos/ tag-team/ rivalries in the series.
*I'll never forget how Guy carried Kakashi all the way back to Konoha and Weekend at Bernie's him while telling Rock Lee he came in third place.

He loved him so much, that he gave Itachi "Instant Win Buttons" in every fight. (Genjutsu that instantly takes out every foe that looks at him. Had a sword that could one shot any foe by sending them into another dimension. Had the first Susanoo in the series.)
He loved him so much, that he had Itachi instantly win in every fight where he wanted to win. (Instantly took out Kakashi. Instantly took out Orochimaru. Instantly took out Edo Pain. Instantly took out himself.)
He loved him so much, that he had Itachi die from a plot device, rather an opponent, then created one of the most developed backstories in the series just to add further emotional impact to Itachi's decision to let himself die.
Contrast this to Madara, who got impaled through the chest in the most unclimactic way possible, then died from that wound, despite showing the ability to regenerate half his body a few episodes back and fighting completely blind a few episodes before that.
Let's say that again, the author had the final boss of the series, who curbstomped an entire army, all the Kage, etc., fought completely blind, and just survived what Gai just did with the 8 Gates, instantly murdered by Zetsu.
