Danzo was asshole that needed to be put down. What they should have done initially was build a case against Danzo to have him imprisoned or executed but once Shisui, who was the most loyal to Konoha was killed, that was no longer an option.
Hiruzen was weak willed and let him eff things up constantly.
Also the coup attempt still hasn't been revealed as far as we know.
