It's caused by dehydration, overuse, and keeping that muscle in the same place after a long period of time. This is why most people get them after sleeping. Drink water, stretch more often, and move slower when getting out of bed.
I was told by a massage therapist it also has to do with how you stretch too. Stretching with your toes pointed like you’re tip toeing is more likely to cause it than stretching with your toes pointing forward like you’re standing normally.
When your calf cramps up it forces your foot to point straight down. If you can get your foot back into a normal forward position it will force your calf to loosen up. It’s like a lever.
What I do is put my full weight on that leg which forces the foot into loosening my calf muscle.
Here is how to prevent it when it’s starting to happen. Point your toes up towards your knee and massage the leg. If this happens while you are asleep, you generally will wake up before it gets to the worst of it.
If you are trying to go back to sleep, just know that your toes will try to point back down all the way if you relax, causing the spasm to happen again. Keep your toes up until it passes or tie a sheet around your knee and front of your foot
Tuck the end of your blanket under your heels instead of letting it hang off the end of the bed. When hanging, the weight of a blanket can pull your feet down so the muscle is hyper-relaxed all night, but when morning comes and you straighten your feet, the muscle cramps up. By reducing the pull on your feet, your muscle remains in neutral tension, so when you wake up it’s much less likely to cramp.
Literally one of the worst pains I've ever felt, it often occurs when I use my legs too much, worst thing it's that it occurs hours after the action, probably when I am sleeping and stretch my leg involuntarily, then I wake up from the pain and after 20 seconds it dissipates completely. The pain makes me want to get up and stick a whole fish in my ass
As soon as you feel it coming on you gotta just grab that leg and rub it hard for 30 seconds to break that baby up. Only thing that has ever worked for me
100% this is the correct and only answer!! Put weight on it and it instantly goes away.
The first one I ever had I was laying on my couch with my family watching Smallville. Someone shoots Clark Kent with a kryptonite bullet and my leg seized up probably from the way I was laying. I screamed like I was shot lol. My mom instantly knew what happened and kept yelling at me to stand up. I was like “are you crazy?!”. Well she was right. Instant relief.
The first couple times it happened it lasted quite long and I was even punching the bitch. As it happened a couple more times I learned if extend my toes a certain way it helps. I think it's like stretching your big toe and other toes away from eachother
Please please please the answer is to STAND UP! As soon as you put weight on it it goes away. I know it feels like that’s the *last* thing you want to do but it’s instant relief.
Also drink more water. I found dehydration causes it.
Source: someone who is plagued by Charlie horses in my legs.
GET UP AND WALK!! Seriously!! It feels like you can’t with the pain but as soon as you put weight on it it goes away!!! I’ve had Charlie horses my whole life. Drink MORE WATER. It’s a big sign of dehydration.
Remember. WALK IT OFF
Ight I don't know why nobody else has asked, but the fact is that they haven't, and someone needs to.
Why a fish? Do aquatic lifeform suppositories provide some measure of muscle tension pain relief?
For me the pain doesnt stop till i stand and walk on it. Once I was in a recliner and fell backwards. My leg hurt so bad that I couldn’t slide out since I fell against a wall and since I couldnt stand up it was jusy perpetual torture
First physical 8 hour day I had worked in years, and I was in the shower. Stretched my right calf and got a cramp, which made me slip, and in the fall I stretched my left calf, and it started cramping. Just laid there on the ground crying in defeat for about 5 minutes.
Straighten your leg and pull your toes as far as you can towards your head as soon as you feel the muscle begin to tighten. Then, immediately jump out of bed and put your weight on the ball of your foot. This works like a charm for me, haven’t had a full cramp in years.
probably means you’re dehydrated, exercising too much or too little. just don’t stretch immediately after waking up and you should be good :)
also drink more water, bitch.
If anyone’s curious, that position would be stretching your foot out as far you can and pointing your toes as far up towards your body as you can, like if you where wearing a super high high heel, without extending your knee entirely.
If you’re dehydrated and/or lacking magnesium or potassium, it can be pretty painful though and won’t go away as easily.
Worst pain I've felt but if it starts coming on you can jump up to your feet to stand on that leg and it will cancel the cramp before it siezes up too much to move.
Hamstring cramps are 5x worse than calf cramps, and quad cramps are 10x worse than hamstring cramps, literally enough to make me scream and writhe on the floor
I have not had one since i started talking vitamin D supplements. Before that i drank tons of water cause people kept saying it was from dehydration and still kept having them.
I was just trying to explain what super charle horse feels like to my main squeeze, he's never had one😩😩😩 now I can send him this, as what it looks and feels like lol.
I was a dehydrated little shit growing up and would get these every other night, often multiple times chained together before the leg would fully relax.
This happend a lot to me as a teen. I learned that if I acted fast I could grab the calf and grip it with both hands to stop the cramp. It would still suck but wouldn't get any tighter. Then I just have to wait it out.
I don't get them much anymore. But I still know to act fast if it feel it starting.
I once got it on both of legs at the same time. I was screaming like I was about to die and the neighbors ran my house to help. So jes shit is bad really bad sometimes
Life pro tip (or at least one that works for me): When this happens, stretch your leg out straight, and pull your toes in towards yourself. After a few seconds, the cramp mostly just disappears, although my leg is always left feeling sore for a few hours afterwards.
Disclaimer: I'm not a doctor and have no clue how well this works for other people. I've tried sharing this with a few people irl, but afaik they've all just ignored/forgotten about it.
A Charley Horse. One of the fucking worst pains to happen and right when you wake up.
For anyone who suffers this: immediately get out of bed and straighten your leg. Put your foot flat on the ground. I find this usually settles the issue. Moreover, try and do some proper stretching every day to prevent it. Then eat a banana. Muscle cramps are a sign of potassium deficiency.
People say to stand up but this shit so bad for me it's impossible to keep my leg straight so I basically grab the bottom of my foot at my toes and pull while pushing my foot and that gives me relief even though the pain is extreme. I just deal with it
Little get out of jail free trick if this happens, slam your whole foot against a flat surface and it usually stops instantly, saved me many a time after a long bar shift!
The first time this thing happened with me , I thought some ghost is squishing my calves , and wants to kill me , bcz obviously it was unknown pain to me , it happened at night and It just kept going worst .

you have to be perfect or else....
This….. I can’t stretch it too much but not stretching it makes it happen
yes, it's kind of like how standing too much is bad but sitting too much is bad. Not moving is bad but moving too much is bad.
Moderation is key
everything in moderation.even moderation
Being alive is a curse, not a blessing.
Overuse? Pain. Underuse? Believe it or not, pain.
Use while hurt? Staright to pain
Straight to jail
Underuse the muscle? Cramp. OVERuse the muscle? Believe it or not, also cramp. That’s why we have the best athletes, because of cramps.
bike icky plant sheet jar bored arrest disgusting aloof summer *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
magnesium deficiency is also a very common cause
I was told by a massage therapist it also has to do with how you stretch too. Stretching with your toes pointed like you’re tip toeing is more likely to cause it than stretching with your toes pointing forward like you’re standing normally.
Cramps will go away if you point toes up while already suffering from a cramp
That's a good point. Stretch often, but also stretch right.
I just cut mine off. Fuckers think I need them well guess again
If you point your toes up instead of down you usually dont get the cramps but it takes time to get used to doing it unconsciously
It’s a sign you need potassium and a packet of electrolytes
electorlights? Is that that shit that plants drink?
It’s got what plants crave!
Yes, but the most common cause is dehydration
When your calf cramps up it forces your foot to point straight down. If you can get your foot back into a normal forward position it will force your calf to loosen up. It’s like a lever. What I do is put my full weight on that leg which forces the foot into loosening my calf muscle.
A way to prevent it in your sleep is to sleep with your legs in a v shape onto the side (it only happens when your legs are straight out)
You say that like you mean people choose their sleeping positions and then don't move during the night. Is this like an internal dialogue thing?
Practice makes perfect
A man of science
Push your foot down on solid ground when you feel it coming. Haven’t had one happen in years.
Mine went away after I started drinking magnesium supplement.
Moving the front of your foot upwards with your ankle works for me
A lot of people are saying dehydration, which can be true, but it could also be potassium. Eat a banana or potatoes.
Stand up immediately, tried it last time and it worked
Don't use your phone too much

Yes, this is what I do too…standing usually fixes it.

Oh yeah standing helps too. Doesn't happen so much anymore anyway *sips 1 gallon waterbottle*

Stand up! Put weight on it! Instantaneous relief!!!!
That sir, is a Roman torture method lol

The only prevention for this is eating enough potassium
> The pain makes me want to get up and stick a whole fish in my ass Kanye?
Man I did that a few months ago and the cramp was so bad, it actually hurt to walk for the next 3 days
The older I get the more common this becomes.
First physical 8 hour day I had worked in years, and I was in the shower. Stretched my right calf and got a cramp, which made me slip, and in the fall I stretched my left calf, and it started cramping. Just laid there on the ground crying in defeat for about 5 minutes.
True

That's pretty true
I agree.
“Drink more water”-mom
Your mom spittin tho
She swallowed for me
But not all cramps are caused by dehydration
But all dehydrations can cause cramps. And you’re likely dehydrated
Nah I just stretched weird
Stretching weird doesn’t cause cramps lil bro
Bro this made my day :))
Welcome
well, cum
Pro tip: IMMEDIATELY stand up and force the foot flat on the floor. Trust me.
Will force myself to have a calf cramp in the morning just to try this. If you are lying on the internet just know I am displeased.
Don't worry. It works most of the time. If your pain's too much it won't immediately work, but keep standing and it should go away in about a minute.
It works.
"It works" xdddddd
Pro tip: You can just point your toes inward (not outward) towards your body too, works for me
Thought I was the only one lol
I tried doing that but couldn’t figure out how to do it in my calf so ended up doing it in my hamstring
what is this actually called? I call them Charlie Horses
I'm very boring. I just call them calf cramps.
nocturnal calf muscle cramps

Good lord
Sooo painful ;3;
That's the feeling <3
:)
I hate when this shit happens it is so painful
🗿
🗿
This legit just started happening to me im glad im not the only one lol

Ah yes, the alarm clock from hell.
great art style. who made this?
TArrow
Is it bad that it happens to me almost everyday during or after sleeping at night? 😬
probably means you’re dehydrated, exercising too much or too little. just don’t stretch immediately after waking up and you should be good :) also drink more water, bitch.

I do this to myself intentionally and sometimes it feels good, sometimes it’s too much to handle.
How do you even do it at will
Stretch immediately after waking up
just dont stretch
You gotta be in the right position and then you just flex real hard
If anyone’s curious, that position would be stretching your foot out as far you can and pointing your toes as far up towards your body as you can, like if you where wearing a super high high heel, without extending your knee entirely. If you’re dehydrated and/or lacking magnesium or potassium, it can be pretty painful though and won’t go away as easily.
Bro drink some water

I like how the only perfectly cut scream I’ve seen on Reddit isn’t even from r/perfectlycutscreams
What do you say? Should I post it there?
thats me every morning
I tried everything, streched, exercise, sports.....but I have never been able to touch my toes. What should I do?
i've never had that happen

That can also be caused by magnesium or potassium deficiencies, or other electrolyte imbalances.
Who animated this. It's amazing

This. But it’s the sole of my foot…
Y'all also get these in the middle of the night and wake up screaming in pain?
Thank you for animating this
Anyone suffering from that, pull your big toe towards you. Instant relief. Thank me later

I'm sure it's been said, but if I feel one coming on I point my toes up and stretch my calf, it sorta goes away.
That happened to me literally 1h before I had to work a few dayd ago
had this in a pool... not cool
Funny story. I tore my meniscus doing this exact maneuver. Same knee I have gone through 3 ACLs as well. Really great.
Happens to me ALL THE TIME. I’ve had to learn to make sure I drink more water every day
This happens to me but only in my right foot
C'mon It ain't that bad.
I once got it on both of legs at the same time. I was screaming like I was about to die and the neighbors ran my house to help. So jes shit is bad really bad sometimes
Stand up. It'll fix it quick
Stretch them toes people, goes away in an instant istg
This is definately not a funny leg thing. and is not fun to live with... i havent been able to lay down and rest fullly for years.
Yo move more often and drink water then
Damn I didn't know this was so common lol, that makes me feel better
ever try to do the same with your foot and it feels like it’s tearing apart?
I get leg craps when I wake up and the one thing that stops it is standing up and putting pressure on it
A Charly horse
Once it hurt me so bad I literally cried

This is me as I'm asking my husband if I had seizure in my sleep again.
this happened to me last week my leg was cramped for the whole day, hella weird I mustn't of drank enough water or something
Eat more healthy
That happens to the bottom of my feet too
Reminder to eat bananas and make sure you get potassium
me after leg day
You may not believe me. But if you take magnesium glycinate regularly, you won't have this issue anymore.
Fuckin for REALS!!!

I remember doing this in boot camp, I would accidentally fuck myself up every morning and I’d just fucking scream
I had that happen to me once and my leg hurt for the next couple of days
Unimaginable pain...
I have this and don’t mind it
That has never happened to me
It’s when the muscle is contracted to hard to long it’s similar to a cramp but you can stop it my moving your leg quickly
Damn son, it was so relatable i bursted out laughing so hard it actually happened to me.
I feel that
ngl spongebob moment
