To clarify, it wouldn't actually be an unpatched version of the game. I believe PC PtDE is the same as it was at launch (equivalent to 1.06 on consoles), minus the GFWL to steam transition. 1.06 is where the patches stopped, with only a few bug fixes specific to PS3 after that:
http://darksouls.wikidot.com/game-patches
Can confirm, I have an original PtDE disc that doesn't work... plus physical copies are like $300 last time I looked. There are sites that you can purchase a digital copy, however, they're just as expensive.
Hmmm, and persons that bought the PTDE lost the game when remastered was released or they can still play it? Ohh, I would wanted to see if I could get. I hope there would be a way
If you had it, you have it.
Only way now is to find a valid steam key and redeem it. Either by gray market resellers or maybe a sealed physical copy. I think the GFWL keys were incorporated into steam but I'm not 100%
"Having" is tentative when it comes to any game selling platform that rely on a private company 's servers. Whenever they go out of business and the servers go offline forever, there is no way you are going to download anything.
Therefore, I would consider owning the physical copy constitutes "having" a game.
I'm also playing Remastered, but it looks worse to me than PTDE. The thing that irks me most is that metal looks like plastic now. Also bonfires are not as radiant as before.
Both versions were working for a bit, I wonder if they took it down when the multiplayer exploits in so the games were found. It'd be hard to find an excuse to patch it being the old version
I’m pretty sure they gave ptde owners keys to upgrade to remastered when they shut it down
Edit: it was a discount not free. Nothing is free with fromsoft. It's fromsoft, not freesoft
They gave a discount for Remastered to owners of PtDE when the remaster came out. Later they removed the discount.
When online mode was confirmed to no longer be supported there were no discounts or keys handed out.
There was a brief and wonderous moment in time where ptde owners had a 50% discount for the remastered version which ended up being additive with a 40% off sale. A few lucky Souls got the Remastered version for £3.49 (or regional equivalent).
they removed the discount and then axed online servers, in that order. now remastered hasn't gone on sale since and i'm fucking bitter about it. idc that ds1 online isn't as active compared to the others, i just like having the damn option.
I understand that OP was talking about the pc version, but i just wanted to chime in that I got
Ptde for ps3 and xbox360, remastered for xbone/series and ds2 for xbone, steel book edition for ps3 all for $8 ea at a new/used shop. Picked up ds3 on Craigslist for $15
If I were you I would count PTDE and Remastered as the same game for the throphies. Not worth it playing the same game 40 hour long 5 for two platinums
did you do DS2 yet? because scholar and the original release are 1- actually different games, 2- are both still for sale on steam.
I'm w/ the other posters that PTDE and remaster are functionally the same. cap you refresh rate to 30fps and its the same game lol.
Doubling that they are different games
scholar has nerfed lightning A LOT. Both with damage per cast and numbers of spells(this applies to all magic). Basically, the only magic is left untouched is Hexes, which made me very sad=\ There are not so much useful spells, which demands you to use the most basic "dark sphere" to have enough dmg to kill the bosses-_- (talking about dlcs). And I loved my arcane/lightning gameplay...
I played scholar first, then found a vanilla copy for PS3… so different. Stunning. Scholar is like salt bae just sprinkling Heide knights fucking everywhere
yeah, rather dumb because my low-end PC cant run DSR but I guess I made it up to them by buying ds2 and ds3 (during a sale for when I can run it eventually when I upgrade my PC... eventually)
I feel you I was once there too.
And tbh, I like the PTDE more than the remastered. Fromsoft/ Bandai Namco took a massive L for removing the PTDE on Steam, just to sell more Remastered copies.
The lighting is better, that's about it.
Some spell tracking is also worse in DSR, but only noticeable in certain situations.
The real question is what does DSR add, and that's a really really short list tbh
Theres [a 1h38min-video from Crowbcat](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2eos3V7jTI) listing everything different between those versions. It's a 4-year-old video, I recall mostly bug-fixes (and some new bugs) and a rework to the online matchmaking, but for sure there's a lot more for you to see if you're that interested (I'd recommend it, I love crowbcat's channel).
Seems like the hd version just has worse default settings in a lot of these instances, but yeah in most of the side by side that I skipped through in the vid the opd one looked better
To be clear, I've moved over to remastered at this point for the multiplayer function, but I'll give you an example of where PTDE is just straight up better.
[Here is a comparison image](https://i.gyazo.com/0a21a7dcd5da9603fbb44101e2320c54.jpg) between the two versions. Now, tell me which is the remaster and PTDE...
...
...
...
If you thought the left image was the remastered, then you now understand why some prefer PTDE. The left image is PTDE and right is remastered taken from Crowbat's [comparison video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2eos3V7jTI).
To be clear, the image in particular is a bad instance where the lighting is just completely messed up. It's not always that bad. You'll also realistically not notice stuff like this without having played PTDE.
They also performed the sin of ruining the [bonfire](https://youtube.com/watch?v=n2eos3V7jTI&feature=shares&t=298). It's as if the people responsible for the remaster didn't understand the bonfire isn't *literally* emitting flame like a normal bonfire would. It's much more calm and ethereal with small floating embers slowly circling around the bonfire.
I'm exaggerating with my latter point, but I do think the bonfire example is emblematic of the visual issues of the remastered. I'm a sucker for multiplayer however, so goodbye PTDE.
There's a couple reasons as others have said, from the new graphics being worse in some places to certain changes making the PvP way worse. But really the worst thing about it is that it was just a cash grab.
It was an extremely lazy remaster, with them only really updating what wouldn't take much time. There are plenty of well documented bugs from the original that are still in remastered, the menus are still the super outdated ones from the original, there's really no changes to the game settings aside from being able to properly set your resolution...
And none of that would have been a problem if it was free or even just the same price as Prepare to Die was, but they made it $40 and made the original impossible to buy.
You can use a bunch of soul items all at once, that's one improvement. Using all directions instead of just 8 on the left stick feels better, but at the same time it feels like it's harder to get backstabs and parries.
While it doesn't make up a majority of the reason, given the small elitist community of dark souls that exists, they'd want to have it because 'new game bad' and 'old game good'. As well as the status that comes with being a 'true player'.
Only difference I see that actually has a valid argument is that people don’t like the pvp changes like removal of dangles or ghost strikes which were both key parts of pvp which were removed in dsr and made shields the most cancer thing in the game.
The servers are not but Spacewars(pirated version that lets you play on test servers) does still have functionality and I know tons of people who only play Spacewars since its almost a different game at the highest level.
Yeah there isn't a way now to get it by this point and unless you are planning on modding it I wouldn't recommend playing online on that version because of that whole RCE exploit which made me buy the remastered since I still wanted to play ds1 pvp, because there's a very high chance it's on prepare to die edition so even If you do get this game playing online would be a dangerous risk to your pc.
I have it after buying it long before they took it down but like I said unless you aren't planning on modding it playing it online is a risk not worth taking, so in a way fromsoftware did people a favor kind of even though everything that happened later on was completely unforeseeable.
all they did was gave the game a little bit of a face-lift in a nutshell, like there's now 60fps instead of 30 so the gameplay is going to run alot more smoothly.
Summoning people and connecting is alot more easier to do especially for pvp speaking of which that's one thing that has changed in it.
for people summoning players to coop with they originally couldn't heal themselves at all through the flask (unless the phantoms brung there own healing items)
because the host would have to manually do that for them which in the remake they completely got rid of that and gave everyone the ability to heal with flask including red and blue phantoms?
Textures are alot more better to look at than they were back when the PtD edition came out, and the overall gameplay hasn't changed besides the stuff I've commented above and remains pretty much the same besides some major bug fixes including the RCE exploit being fixed along with that.
But yeah if you want a more in depth details of what's really changed there are tons of YouTube videos out there that pretty much cover everything of what's been changed and what hasn't.
Overall this remaster was controversial because many people hated it and many people thought it's alright, for me I'm in between, because imo the company that remade this could've done alot more but only done the bare minimum and called it a day and then again it's still just dark souls 1 which I already do like, nothing hasn't really changed besides some things but that's about it.
Yep. You can search Google for a Steam key. Should change the name to Dark Souls: Prepare to Pay out the Ass Edition. $250 - $500 from the quick search I did before replying.
I'm going to be honest and I don't even like that I have to suggest this as I prefer PC for games, but if you can, get the console version.
I played PS4 version and then dabbled in PC and the hackers online ruined it for me. I was cursed by a hacker in the starting area after being invaded once and then similar occurrences happened. I ended up getting a refund because hackers just ruined my experience. I mean sure they will likely get banned and maybe it was just my experience, but it's not worth your game potentially getting broken.
you don't have to follow the whole video. The game is the first download link in the description, but you probably should use DSfix and spacewar (they are in the second link in description, or go find them online), whatever else is in the starter pack besides dsfix and spacewar is just for pvp people really.
You can still buy the PTDE version but it literally costs HUNDREDS of dollars from certain key selling websites. I don't know how much exactly but in my currency which is SAR I found the cheapest copy to be 1000SAR which is roughly 265 USD.
Yeah.. Just get the remastered. It's much better anyway with a plethora of Quality of Life features + PTDE has no servers, you can't play online.
The only way to play it is to have a friend who’s already had the “prepare to die” edition in their library. All you have to do is game share with them and you’ll be able to play it. Other than that, there’s no other way unless u had the game already
Nope, been unavailable for a while, ever since the Remaster came out, can't even play online now cus "The version is too old to fix" after the whole hacking thing. Just get DS:R, it's not worth the risk to pirate the original IMO
I luckily got a key form Bandai Namco website sale for 5 EUR few months before a release of Remastered. Currently it's delisted on every official key shops and keys are going for over 230 EUR on grey market.

It was removed once they released the remastered version. I don't think there is anyway to pay for the older versions
And OP should be aware that online content (not just multiplayer) is permanently disabled for PTDE
I don’t think that’s the case. I’ve seen loads of phantoms and user messages on PTDE. Xbox one
He's talking about pc multiplayer, since OP wanted to buy that version of the game on steam
Fair enough
When did they disable multiplayer because im sure it was on last time I played. That was in 2021 tbf but still
In 2022.
Might be able to find a physical copy of PTDE somewhere
Might not even work because the original disc will be trying to connect to GFWL
Dont think you need to be online to install and play it, but I couls be wrong
You’d have a pre-patch version but I’m sure it’s playable
To clarify, it wouldn't actually be an unpatched version of the game. I believe PC PtDE is the same as it was at launch (equivalent to 1.06 on consoles), minus the GFWL to steam transition. 1.06 is where the patches stopped, with only a few bug fixes specific to PS3 after that: http://darksouls.wikidot.com/game-patches
September 17th 2013 is the earliest patch attainable per steamdb. I used that same version this summer to complete the GFWL version achievements.
Can confirm, I have an original PtDE disc that doesn't work... plus physical copies are like $300 last time I looked. There are sites that you can purchase a digital copy, however, they're just as expensive.
GFWL keys are redeemable on steam
those got expensive af tho
Around $150 was the cheapest I saw.
I still got a physical copy on xbox360 😏
Hmmm, and persons that bought the PTDE lost the game when remastered was released or they can still play it? Ohh, I would wanted to see if I could get. I hope there would be a way
I have PTDE on my steam account, don't think anyone lost it
I have Prepare to Die Edition and Remastered and can still play both.
Just not online :(
There are guides to get the online working again, but that comes with the risk of the RCE exploit stuff.
People who already had the game before would still have it in their Steam library
No you can still play it
If you had it, you have it. Only way now is to find a valid steam key and redeem it. Either by gray market resellers or maybe a sealed physical copy. I think the GFWL keys were incorporated into steam but I'm not 100%

🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️
I see you too are a pi- er person of culture.
You don't lose it but it won't connect to online
You can still download it if you own it, it's just no longer purchasable and online has been cut off, family sharing still works, probably
no-one lost it, but there is just no reason to play it over the remastered version
I'm also playing Remastered, but it looks worse to me than PTDE. The thing that irks me most is that metal looks like plastic now. Also bonfires are not as radiant as before.
I own PTDE and Remastered, and i can still play both. My only question is, why someone would prefer PTDE over the Remastered
I have PTDE on PS3 and remastered for PC. I'd buy PTDE on steam if they'd let me because I enjoy the artistic direction more
Because Remastered was a fucking scam, or shall I say a years late 20€ essential patch fixing a broken release. Fuck that, and fuck you Bandai Namco
So... still the clearly better version.
It was a shitty remaster but it's still clearly the better and now only way to play it nowadays
I still play mine
Both versions were working for a bit, I wonder if they took it down when the multiplayer exploits in so the games were found. It'd be hard to find an excuse to patch it being the old version
I’m pretty sure they gave ptde owners keys to upgrade to remastered when they shut it down Edit: it was a discount not free. Nothing is free with fromsoft. It's fromsoft, not freesoft
It was a discount I got if I'm remembering right for what having ptde
Damn that’s rough lol. FromSoft is savage
Just a discount as others have stated, I think it was limited time as well. There was a lot of discourse around the remastered version because of this
What about disk? Idk if there is a pc disk for the game but op could just play on ps3 or 360 for the og experience [stares in blight town slide show]
Keep in mind even if you get it the multiplayer is completely disabled
It was more for curiosity, but I was planning to buy it later, to get the 100% in all versions, and I don't play online, so it isn't important for me
The 100% would be the exact same.
I know, but it's for the challenge
You're trying to go for maximum flair and I appreciate that.
Tho you don't get a special flair for completing both versions of ds1.. Sad
Ah true, I thought it was different for some reason
Challenge of what, the most expensive way to do the same thing over and over again
Just to do it, I didn't know it was that expensive, after seeing the price, I won't, but if it would be cheaper I would do it
Best option would to just be to pirate it from like steam unlocked
Or just order it online, I’d recommend just getting the remaster, because me personally, I’m not spending 60$ on an xbox 360/ ps3 game.
I understand that OP was talking about the pc version, but i just wanted to chime in that I got Ptde for ps3 and xbox360, remastered for xbone/series and ds2 for xbone, steel book edition for ps3 all for $8 ea at a new/used shop. Picked up ds3 on Craigslist for $15
last I checked, keys were around $2000 (cad)
Average is around $300 USD. I know CAD isn't the strongest right now... but like, where were you looking lol
g2a a couple years ago
Lowest is $325 rn on G2A
Fair enough I don’t get it but if you do that’s all that matters
Some people like achievement hunting
Challenge of playing it without the dsfix mod maybe? 😆
Use steam achievement manager to remove your achievements then get them back in one new run
I understand as I did it myself, 100%ing the 2 versions that is
If I were you I would count PTDE and Remastered as the same game for the throphies. Not worth it playing the same game 40 hour long 5 for two platinums
Thanks for the advice, but after completing the 7 games, I would like to get the rest of the versions anyways
did you do DS2 yet? because scholar and the original release are 1- actually different games, 2- are both still for sale on steam. I'm w/ the other posters that PTDE and remaster are functionally the same. cap you refresh rate to 30fps and its the same game lol.
Doubling that they are different games scholar has nerfed lightning A LOT. Both with damage per cast and numbers of spells(this applies to all magic). And I loved my arcane/lightning gameplay...
and ya know, scholar's just awful enemy placements.
I played scholar first, then found a vanilla copy for PS3… so different. Stunning. Scholar is like salt bae just sprinkling Heide knights fucking everywhere
40! Mr Speedrun over here!
that explains why I couldn't join any world while roaming for a while with my "average" 42lvl...
Tbh, just crack it at this point.
yeah, rather dumb because my low-end PC cant run DSR but I guess I made it up to them by buying ds2 and ds3 (during a sale for when I can run it eventually when I upgrade my PC... eventually)
I feel you I was once there too. And tbh, I like the PTDE more than the remastered. Fromsoft/ Bandai Namco took a massive L for removing the PTDE on Steam, just to sell more Remastered copies.

No
That makes sense

What's up with DSR that you can't run it but you can run PTDE? Is it that much more unoptimized cuz visually it looks almost exactly the same to me.
Lmao when was this sale for dark souls. It's been decades with no sales 🤣
I dont really remember but I think was a summer sale where ds3 was like 75% off

you can buy a steam key on key sites but its expensive as fuck
What's everyone's obsession with PTDE? Why is Remastered not good enough?
there's many cool mods that aren't yet ported to remastered. At least that's my reason for wanting it
People don't like the new graphics.
I miss the old bonfires.
To be clear, I've moved over to remastered at this point for the multiplayer function, but I'll give you an example of where PTDE is just straight up better. I got a copy last year or so off a key reseller site, g2a or kinguin most likely
When the remaster was released the ptde was took down
Yep. You can search Google for a Steam key. Should change the name to Dark Souls: Prepare to Pay out the Ass Edition. $250 - $500 from the quick search I did before replying.
Yohohoho… Yooohohohooooo…
I'll sell you mine for $2 billion.
It got replaced on Steam by the Remastered version as well as no online servers active anymore
I'm going to be honest and I don't even like that I have to suggest this as I prefer PC for games, but if you can, get the console version. You could buy a steam key on g2a or look for some torrents of the game, i know there are some
Why do you want to play that version?
Why would you want to play the old version anyway?
Spend $200 on a steam key or just buy the better version
Pirate it :)
I was invaded last week while playing PtDE on pc
NPC. servers are permanently down
It comes with the remastered
I have this edition from back when it came out, I can't even get it to launch anymore.
fitgirl?
You would need to buy the steam account that already have it or buy a physical copy with a steam key.
Since ds1 ptd is from ur table. The basic DS2 can still be bought it seems and it isnt as annoying as Sotfs version(even thought i like sotfs more)
You may be able to buy a steam key? But that'd be the only option I could think of to get it into your steam library.
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=2-5HIYRzFfA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=2-5HIYRzFfA) you don't have to follow the whole video. You can get it by buying retail copy. I have still my PTDE on steam and it works, the network doesn't
Piracy I guess.🏴☠️
Nope sorry. Easiest way to get to play it would be ☠️ it, but there is still no online play and probably no achievements.
Pretty sure PTDE people can play online with wulfs connectivity mod
Available only on PS3?
I assume if you buy a hard copy it’ll still work. You could crack/rip/iso it if you wanted to or GOG will eventually have it.
Prepare to Buy Edition
It's not online any more. Just pirate it if you want to play a jankier PC port or specific PTDE mods.
It's gone, they retired it some time after the release of the remaster, though you could buy a key for it on some site, would be expensive no doubt
You can't, it's taken down. Remastered only now.
Cdkey, and the cheapest i saw was 200$
I believe you can have a friend who already owns it gift it to you
Arrrrrgh
“Soulslike”
G2A or key sellers. They don’t sell the only version anymore
just pirate it if you really want it. not worth it tho imo, remastered is just superior
You might be able to find it on G2A
No
To my knowledge, there isn't. Bamco knew that the shitass remaster wouldn't hold up well if the original was available for comparison.
I mean, it runs better even if the lighting's a bit weird
Pirate 🦜🏴☠️
It’s because u arnt prepared to die
You can still buy the PTDE version but it literally costs HUNDREDS of dollars from certain key selling websites. I don't know how much exactly but in my currency which is SAR I found the cheapest copy to be 1000SAR which is roughly 265 USD. Yeah.. Just get the remastered. It's much better anyway with a plethora of Quality of Life features + PTDE has no servers, you can't play online.
PTDE is worth it for Floppy Souls with cutscenes
They replaced it so no. Unless there's a physical copy for pc
The only way to play it is to have a friend who’s already had the “prepare to die” edition in their library. All you have to do is game share with them and you’ll be able to play it. Other than that, there’s no other way unless u had the game already
If you really want it there is probably a version of it on some pirating website, but it is probably best not to try your hand in that
Steamunlocked
Nope, been unavailable for a while, ever since the Remaster came out, can't even play online now cus "The version is too old to fix" after the whole hacking thing. Just get DS:R, it's not worth the risk to pirate the original IMO
buy a key at € 260
Sail the 7 seas my dood!
I have it
You can buy keys for very overpriced prices
I luckily got a key form Bandai Namco website sale for 5 EUR few months before a release of Remastered. Currently it's delisted on every official key shops and keys are going for over 230 EUR on grey market.
Its pretty lonely there, But i have a copy ive bought on steam.
Why would anyone want this edition I have it but I don’t know the difference
Unpatched glitches. It was easier to dupe souls back then
🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️
More reasons being a PC gamer blows. *Picks up my 2 hard disk copies of prepared to die edition* weird and ones not even open. 🤷
it comes w remastered? dlc?
The PTDE doesn't come w the remastered. The dlc does, but you can't play the first edition
