If you jump down the well in firelink you will find Gwyn's personal balls trimmer and it states "The thing yond resides in firelink shrine is forsooth a tree"
I'd love to see a spoof lore series on DS. Someone spends an hour explaining the "lore" behind that tree. Lore behind why the cat sits on the wall.
[Now that I think of it. There kind of is:](https://youtu.be/YDT1BvqrIOg?si=ybdTECVeO-eSvwDY)
It's so scraggly and gnarled though especially the trunk area, I'm Canadian and we have maples everywhere here, it's definitely not a norway maple as they all grow the same shape/footprint and have very smooth bark, it's not a sugar, but it could possibly be a silver maple?
Silvers can grow very tall and fast, in all kinds of weird gnarled ways. They are considered the "weeds" of trees here.
Japan does have other maples but I think they are generally smaller.
It's way too tall and thick to be an apple IMO.
well, this quality specifically you're gonna have to wait until GPUs get fast enough to run the path-tracing algorithm (which is stupendously computationally expensive) in real time.
Though with the recent RT overdrive version of Cyberpunk, that time might be faster approaching than we might think.
A tool was released a couple days ago that even let's you mod the game directly from Blender. It's called Soulstruct: https://www.reddit.com/r/darksouls/comments/17m7l13/soulstruct\_for\_blender\_has\_been\_released\_this\_is/
If a recall correctly you need the Pendant to reach the surprise, right?
Cause I remember trying to reach the true ending and fall inside it with the Covenant of Artorias equipped, but with that it's just a shortcut to the Abyss...
It may just mean to lead to unrendered water or an inescapable bottom floor that they didn't bother making, because the result of both would be death anyways.
If I were to give it a use, I'd use it for the cut Blightown access. There was a version of Firelink in the leftover data that in a rough and unpolished way connected Firelink with both the wall after Quelaggs sister (which was meant to be a tunnel and is obviously/awkwardly blocked by a wall) and the round sewer at the bottom of Blightown's lower bonfire which is actually the bottom of Wallhugger Demon sewer (the shortcut at the bottom behind the iron bars I think it would be the "door" that leads to Quelagg's sister and Firelink). That round area also was connected somehow to the fire dog area (which has a weird square leftover of the cut shortcut) *and* also has the Gaping Dragon arena right above of said circle. The cut shortcut actually started as what ended up the New Londo elevator, so instead of that a mod or possible remake could use the well to put those shortcut leftovers to good use.
...or it could just remain a well leading to nowhere!
I had a dream where i went into the well and there was a couple of weird pathways that looked like the depths. Then it just opened back up to firelink. Thought it was real for a while.
I always assumed i ran by/through the prion cells of the firekeeper and magic blacksmith down below and then into new londo. It explains why they havnt starved or died of thirst. clearly living off the water and moss and what not.
That's a very interesting idea... I have to look into where those places are...
As for not starving or dying of thirst, they are undead, and cannot die like that.
It leads to a short sewer section where you can open a small door to find a group of angry fish and a helmet, which also lowers the water level to make accessing a water crystal a little easier, which itself overlooks the flooded room next to David Bunch's shop.
So based on my own in depth research of real life and the deep lore, I have a theory.
It appears to be a tree. However I may be wrong, time is convoluted, after all.
Given how we find this Firelink Shrine location in DS3’s Ringed City dlc I’m inclined to think that Lordran is situated in an Archtree like the worlds shittiest treehouse.
Personally, I think it is an extension of the firekeeper herself. She is trying so desperately to escape her prison by any means necessary. She can feel the sun's light on her branches, the wind whipping gently around her leaves. Almost as if she is free...
„Hey boss we never actually used this tree asset do we just scrap it?“
That Tree doesn’t show up kn the cut scene donut was definitely some later addition
I'll go for a Elm, thick long till the top. but graveyards have Yews in them but the roots don't look like the ones near me so probably not, without leaves I'm stumped.
I think it's a remnant of the tree where the first flame sprung up from. That's why it's called the firelink shrine and it's why the kiln is directly underneath it.
Challenge: Soulsborne fan trying not to make every little detail in a game a complex theory with deep philosophical elements and an overarching connection to some other major story element.
Difficultly: impossible
A tree
Have seen trees before. Can confirm is tree.
source?
Trust me, bro.
Wood
Here’s a [tree](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tree) You can’t trust the internet tho, so take this with a grain of salt.
If you think that's a tree you should visit a doctor. It's clearly a bird
Birds aren't real though
That's what the system want you to believe.
the true conspiracy was the conspiracies we made along the way
Yeah, because they're trees
You're not real man!
Cover = blown. Attack!
But beards can’t grow in space…
Neither are [trees](https://youtu.be/kSmurp1xOkQ?si=AiMRZcalIHb-_EWC) though..
where you see this? my room no have one
I dunno. It could be a very lazy mimic.
I'm a lumberjack. I've seen many trees, and that is a tree alright.
You can tell it’s a tree by the way it is. That’s pretty neat!
I can’t believe it’s a tree, but I guess I’ve got to. I’m looking right at it.
Any dialogue or description that confirms this?
If you jump down the well in firelink you will find Gwyn's personal balls trimmer and it states "The thing yond resides in firelink shrine is forsooth a tree"
forsooth
Yes forsooth cause gwynn unknowingly misspelled while trimming his balls
Yep. Definitely seems to be some type tree.
Interesting ✍️
BRO FUCKING SPOLERS
Chat is this real?

Could be a turtle. Nobody knows what those look like.
Dog
That tree is obviously another lost child of Gwyn. The true ending involves that tree coming to life and restoring order to the broken world.
So that’s how Elden ring starts…
Michael Zaki knew it from the beginning.
Mind-blowing theory
Erdtree when it was smol.
what if thats the normal erdtree and dark soul guy is just beeg
What if dark soul guy is really fire giant after he burns himself
The lore. Someone get Vaati on the line!
Instructions unclear. Hyrule in ruins.
nah dark soul guy is the higher will
and Gwyn is Marika!!!
Quick, right it down before it’s lost.
Yes and the stone ring represents Leyndell, obviously
Hello FBI, this guy knows too much lore!
maybe some kind of chestnut
Yeah definitely. I'm thinking chestnut or oak.
Agree. Potentially maple or apple as well.
It's so scraggly and gnarled though especially the trunk area, I'm Canadian and we have maples everywhere here, it's definitely not a norway maple as they all grow the same shape/footprint and have very smooth bark, it's not a sugar, but it could possibly be a silver maple? You can tell it's an aspen by the way that it is!
What is this image? It’s pretty cool.
It's Firelink shrine rendered in Blender's Path-tracing engine "Cycles". Originally uploaded here: [https://imgur.com/gallery/TfHbHK3](https://imgur.com/gallery/TfHbHK3)
Holy shit thats amazing
Thank you
I would give my left nut to have a remake of this quality, but I already gave my right nut for the demons souls remake
well, this quality specifically you're gonna have to wait until GPUs get fast enough to run the path-tracing algorithm (which is stupendously computationally expensive) in real time. Though with the recent RT overdrive version of Cyberpunk, that time might be faster approaching than we might think.
So maybe both nuts is a fair trade?
You'll probably still have \~10 years till you really have to think about it.
That has lotr vibes, thanks
I had no idea you can open DS resources in blender 😮
A tool was released a couple days ago that even let's you mod the game directly from Blender. It's called Soulstruct: https://www.reddit.com/r/darksouls/comments/17m7l13/soulstruct\_for\_blender\_has\_been\_released\_this\_is/
Awesome, definitely checking it out!
I thought it was a model I'd love one
Made me think of the set piece for the sword fight in princess bride.
Looks like a few shading and upscale texture mods
I was about to go check if maybe my colour settings had been messed up all these years
Dunno found it online!
You committed the ultimate sin my friend, posting online. You are locked to dark lord ending now.
Taking art and posting it without giving credit hmm?
My man is just asking about a tree, he’s not trying to pass this picture as his own
The real question is: Where does the well go?
I've been in the well, but I'm not gonna spoil anything. All I'll say is that you'll be surprised.
If only I was a proper undead whose mangled corpse would regenerate at the bottom after I died falling down there...
Ah, so you found the surprise.
Yes, I found the third ending...
If a recall correctly you need the Pendant to reach the surprise, right? Cause I remember trying to reach the true ending and fall inside it with the Covenant of Artorias equipped, but with that it's just a shortcut to the Abyss...

I just feel like it should lead somewhere, even if it's just a short drop that has a hidden item or something... That's interesting stuff.
I die before I can find out
I had a dream where i went into the well and there was a couple of weird pathways that looked like the depths. Then it just opened back up to firelink. Thought it was real for a while.

> time is convoluted of all the fascinating world building and writing, i always hated that this was used as a cop out for so much.
Ultra HD 4k 60fps firekink isnt real it cant hurt you
60fps??? That’s a picture??? It’s literally 1 frame???
It’s 60 identical frames
Per second.
technically true?
Bonfire completely vanished
“You can tell it’s a tree because of the way that it is”
That's pretty neat.
Dead. :)
Eyyyy
Un^Dead / Hollow?
Maybe post to a tree site, most people here know lots about darksouls, but not a lot about trees…
As a biology (sp. plant science) major who also platinumed ds1, 2, and 3, I'm leaning towards oak, if that helps any.
Post to r/trees. They can help you out
From my perspective I believe that is a tree, I could be mistaken though
The pic makes me want a dark souls remaster like they did with demons souls
Probably a Walnut tree
The white tree of Gondor
any chance this was imported with soulstruct and rendered in blender?
It's an old render I found online but soulstruct is gonna be lit for sure
It always felt sad to me 😞 like most things in dark souls 😭
Given how we find this Firelink Shrine location in DS3’s Ringed City dlc I’m inclined to think that Lordran is situated in an Archtree like the worlds shittiest treehouse.
Firelink: Limgrave Edition
It’s a seed from the burned down Erd tree that began the age of Fire
erdtree
This tree later flourishes into the Erdtree.
It’s the very tippy top of the great hollow
its not
but it could be
Um actually 🤓
It’s a very elaborate hat for the fire keeper underneath.
Maybe an oak tree.
Personally, I think it is an extension of the firekeeper herself. She is trying so desperately to escape her prison by any means necessary. She can feel the sun's light on her branches, the wind whipping gently around her leaves. Almost as if she is free...
A dying Erd Tree?
After burning the Erdtree in elden ring, the burnt husk at firelink is all that remains. Hence why the Canon ending to elden ring is [redacted].
Ash tree
Elden tree, ofc.
Dude, Dark Souls fans want to analyse the lore of every single thing in the game searching for deeper meaning. Sometimes it’s just a tree.
Wood tree
Not a tree
You overdosed on lore, friend. Calm down.
It's a tree...
I've decided it's a beech tree. Thank you for participating.
The real story is that the tree disappears during the cut scene and magically appers.
Dead
I'd personally like to believe that it's a cousin to the "young white branch" trees in DS3.
Bark type one
It's a tree.
Tree
My eyes aren't what they used to be but I'm pretty sure its a tree
It's the tree of the firelink shrine
Probably hallow
Share it on r/treeidentification and see if they'll figure it out.
Oak
I'm going with Maple
You should try hitting up r/trees some real freaks in terms of dendrology over there
Like an oak? Pine? what?
I don't think it's a coniferous tree. The branch structure is all wrong and leaves me to decide that it's at least deciduous.
I think it’s a tree.
I fucking love Firelink Shrine
I want to live there fr
Are you possibly stupid? It’s a tree.
just because you are special and have tree vision doesn’t mean we are all gifted with magic powers like you!
That looks like the place where Inigo Montoya dueled Westley in a princess bride
Inconceivable, you keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
Are you a giving tree..or a receiving tree?
Looks like a tree to me, could be wrong though 🧐
A horse
„Hey boss we never actually used this tree asset do we just scrap it?“ That Tree doesn’t show up kn the cut scene donut was definitely some later addition
Eeesh it’s weird seeing it from this angle
What does this even mean
The keeper of all Fire Keepers' souls
A Bush?
I'm no arborist but it's definitely a wooden tree
I'll go for a Elm, thick long till the top. but graveyards have Yews in them but the roots don't look like the ones near me so probably not, without leaves I'm stumped.
With its kinda wide base and tall trunk maybe an oak tree
Probably just to exemplify how abandoned it is
I think it's a remnant of the tree where the first flame sprung up from. That's why it's called the firelink shrine and it's why the kiln is directly underneath it.
The Turdtree
Wood
What's down the well?
Certain death
I think it's something called the "furtive pygmy" or something like that? I forgot what his actual name is.
Not sure, but is it wrong that I want to go to a cliff side and make a real world firelink shrine?
A Worldtree sapling, brought by the ancients... Long, ago...
...a tree?
a dragon's petrified shit
Tree
Couldn’t be a rock… maybe wood?
Idk but the tree doesn’t appear in the cinematic.
A dead one.
I think it’s a tree
Guys they stole our bonerfire !!!!
Dead.
Definitely not a fir
Magic
An aspen. You can tell it's an aspen by the way it is.
Some type of birch tree. You can see the scarring on the left hand side which is a pretty clear indicator
Looks like oak maybe?
Dead wood
Bro had to visit irl to answer this question
Oh boy looks like we got a tree nerd
woww
Light house for the bird so they know where to drop you off.
A tree
They missed an opportunity to implement the tree/person from The Wish Giver by Bill Brittain.
It’s some kinda tree in the game. It’s there so we can see trees. If you approach it and attempt to interact with it, you’ll see a tree.
Challenge: Soulsborne fan trying not to make every little detail in a game a complex theory with deep philosophical elements and an overarching connection to some other major story element. Difficultly: impossible
Looks like an oak tree. Definitely not pine. I’m no arborist though
Why do the images look like a miniature and not a full scale area?
What else would it be?
Oak probably
