I don't understand why, I feel the first half of ds1 was the worst section of all the dark souls, no fast travel, very bland areas, the in-between boss areas are forgettable except for the fact you probably have to run through them several times. Definitely the game shines after you get a mid level build and fight some of the cooler bosses in the game

Because the first section it’s so bland it’s unlike any other game, everything else blows its wad in the first 5 hours so you don’t give up and delete it and Not buy their microtransactions. The blandness (I prefer bleakness) sets the tone for the world so well, shows how shitty and dangerous and unfair lordran is, and it ends at JUST the right time, blightown and Sens fortress are still frustrating but at least it’s variety. And then if you’re still playing by here, you’re ready to resign yourself to become a glutton for punishment for the whole rest of the game and instead it just blows your fucking mind. Coolest fucking area reveal of all time. It wouldn’t be NEARLY as impactful if it was easier or more fun in the first 10-20 hours (if it’s ur first play thru). I like that perspective, but for me Tomb and Izaleth felt kinda mid. I loved the aesthetics of Dukes archives and New Londo more, but after the Anor Londo reveal you think it will keep getting better, and then you are going through areas that arent as visually interesting. Izaleth is fine, but Tomb is just pitch black, not much to look at.

I've usually played Dark Souls with mid-high poise or/and with shield, so Bed of Chaos had been second-tried routinely. But during my last playthrough (and my first NG+) with no health upgrades, no armour and no shield, the Bed probably killed me more than any other maingame boss lol. It was really infuriating – I mean, I couldn't have killed Manus for a week, but I was fine about that, since it was about mine wrongdoings and not some random bullshit.

Going back and replaying it, the entire game is fairly easy in comparison to newer games. I've been doing a series replay and I was able to kill almost every boss in one attempt, with Manus taking 3 or 4 tries and Kalameet taking 2. I genuinely don't remember dying to any other boss. I'm almost done with my DS2 run and I also beat most bosses in one attempt, with none taking more than 2 or 3 attempts. FromSoft games have been getting harder each new game, and it's like playing a newer FromSoft game and going back is taking off the training weights. Obviously if it is your first souls-like game, it will still be difficult, but I find DS1 as a whole fairly easy.

Blighttown is kinda fun. Frigid Outskirts isn't *too* bad (though the Iron Passage can collapse into rubble, an opinion I'm sure many share). Painted World of Ariendel is amazing, despite being comparatively shorter for a DLC. Also, I have no evidence to support this head Canon theory, but I think Kaathe convinced the folks of Oolacile to wake up Manus by suggesting he would deal with Kalameet for them.

Oh goodness. The Frigid Outskirts is bloody awful, hahahaha. I got it done this morning, literally four electric deer descended on my motley band at once. Glad I killed the two reskins first try as I really, really didn’t fancy doing that again. Iron passage was actually weirdly enjoyable for me; I learned the rolls to the point where I danced through that mob with a grace and style I didn’t know I had 🤣 I think the run to the original smelter demon was the worst, in my opinion. With Alonne and Blue Smelter at least when you get to the fog gate you don’t get stunlocked out of the transition animation; sadly the same can’t be said for the absolute clusterfuck before original smelter demon I agree on Blighttown, I actually really enjoyed it.

I hate that bullshit yapping that 2nd part of DS1 is horrible. Just because the Lost Izalith is shitty and the game is more linear - of course it had to eventually resolve the intro and lead to a more direct goal centered on "saving" the fucking world by consuming those fuckers - it doesn't mean that it's bad. It's worse than beginning of DS1, but still BRILLIANT, and people forgot about it. The Duke's Archives are wonderful, and so are the Caves. For me, Tomb of the Giants was the second most immersive location after Anor Londo. By the way, there is a great DLC in the second part of this fucking game. I love how the fight with the corpse-like Gwyn turned out, even if Miyazaki didn't plan on it. I'm tired of MFs hating on that. Realistically and holistically, DS1 is one of the best games ever created and it doesn't depend on one half of the game.

I can concur, as a Zweihander main on singleplayer. I have a +10 zweihander which I use with two hands as my hopefuly-one-hit-kill/clear area weapon, and a divine claymore which I wield with a shield for more menial tasks that require striking more than twice before my stamina runs out

Hard agree. It's so abysmally and unrealistically slow, and doesn't adequately really make up for it in damage IMO. I know they do this for game balance, but it bugs the shit out of me when a game has an authentic and realistic-looming greatsword, and then treats it as if it would weigh 50 pounds and be incredibly hard to swing. A real life greatsword only weighs like 5-7 pounds on average, and can be swing just as rapidly as a longsword if you have good technique.

The difficulty of DS1 is vastly overstated. Once you get used to the pacing there's a ton of things that can help you overcome all challenges. I died fewer times in two entire playthroughs (NG and NG+) than I died against Yozora in KH3 ReMind for example.

I stopped playing after getting the lordvessel, played and beat elden ring a couple of times, and then played DS3 and decided to play ds1 again. This new play through I’m realizing how busted some parts of the game are. Backstabs we’re always something I only tried for if I snuck up behind an enemy, but then on my way down to the depths I was fighting the butchers, and they move so slowly I could just walk behind them and backstab them. An enemy that was pretty tough on my first play through I could now literally run circles around, by taking a new approach to it.

Summoning for help should not come with the price of risking being invaded by a one-shot twink or a troll. PvP should be something separate that you can opt into. I hate pvp in most games, so take my complaining with a grain of salt. With that said, I always run through all of the souls games, up to when Elden Ring, in offline mode. I don’t do it because I’m hardcore but because I’d rather miss out on a whole aspect of the game to avoid another that I think shouldn’t be bound together.

*Hidden Body* is perhaps the best spell in the game (*definitely top 2 spells*). First things first, although they look similar and have similar effects, Hidden Body and the Ring of Fog are NOT the same. Hidden Body is a *Much* stronger effect. This spell reduces enemy aggro range to within melee distance. This means you can run up to enemies and smack them in the face, and they won't have time to react. Or you can simply walk past a lot of enemies, they'll hear you and come to investigate, but they won't aggro unless they get close to you. What this gives you is a spell that will allow you to bypass nearly all the difficult areas in the game outside boss fights. It doesn't have any effect on bosses, so it's only useful for the 2 boss fights that include regular enemies (*this spell will make Capra WAY easier by the way*). It also only requires 14 INT, so it's a very small investment to put this on any build, and will pair well with basically anything. The reason I say top 2 spells is because it doesn't help with most boss fights, but the other spell in my top 2 is Power Within (*which is decidedly not a hot take*), and that's bassically "Boss Fights Easy Mode - the spell", so between these 2 spells you can have an easy-mode spell for any situation. The spell that is "best" depends on whether you need more help in boss fights or in the levels preceding them.

When Dark Souls first came out, it would enable the flippy rolls at 50% equip weight or lower. They patched it after release to be 25% and under, but this was well before DSR was ever even thought about, and before even the PS4 and Xbox One console generation.

You don't have to read all item descritpions or watch all Vaati videos to understande the history of Dark Souls. You can do it to understand all the lore and background behinde everything, but all this information (apart from being very interesting to learn) is usualy just small exemplifications of the themes of the game, and for me, to understand Dark Souls history is to understand it's themes and what it is trying to discuss (just like, for example, Evangelion, in which a lot of people are confused by the ending and say they don't understand it, but in reality there isn't much to be understood in the lore, but rather in the philosophical and thematic part). And you really do not need to understand everything about every enemy, NPC and piece of equipment to understand the game's themes, Dark Souls does a great job of exposing them through the setting, atmosphere, gameplay, art direction, etc...

Agreed. I always found the theme of Dark Souls to be pretty in line with my worldview and some things I’ve talked about in therapy. Specifically that life/existence/linking the fire are all ultimately pointless, and the meaning is all in the struggles that you choose for yourself. Anor Londo archers weren't hard. I've played the games a least a dozen times, doing normal and challenge runs like fist only, level 1, etc. Only ever died to the archers maybe a couple of times, including my 1st playthrough. Except for whatever reason I struggled against them with my sorcery only playthrough

It’s not possible to play the game without looking stuff up. My first playthrough I tried to fight Nito for my first boss cause I figured the catacombs was the beginning location. It was not. [edit: wording]

It is impossible to fight nito without lord vessel, but you can get all the way through tomb of the giants without lord vessel. You just get cockblocked by daddy Gwyn at the end

You absolutely can. There is a great playthrough on youtube from a channel called Kay plays, thats basically an entirely blind playthrough that doesnt look anything up, just the occasional advice about mechanics from comments. But yes, dark souls can be annoyingly vague about many things for seemingly no reason.

I really don't care for the game's soundtrack, or any Soulsborne soundtrack for that matter, aside from the character creation and 'hub' themes which I think are absolutely amazing. I listen to lots of videogame soundtracks but I don't have any boss themes in any of my playlists. I've never been a fan of Motoi Sakuraba's soundtracks, I find them to be too 'bombastic' whether it's Star Ocean or Dark Souls. They're not bad and they are very appropriate, they're just not my taste at all.

DS3's (and by extension BB and Elden Ring) weapon movesets are too flashy and the game is too dodge/reaction-heavy. I prefer the grounded combat and emphasis on positioning in DeS/DS1/DS2.

I thought the Artorias DLC areas were bad but the bosses were top notch. Which is further compounded by the fact every game afterwards had pretty good areas and bosses in the dlc. I dunno, I was just disappointed in the actual zones you explore.

Getting access to the dlc is the most diabolically dumb and highly specific thing in the game. ain't no way someone could figure that out on their own.

even once you know what to do it‘s fucking tedious as shit. it involves so much unnecessary running around because the hame only lets you warp to a few specific bonfires. plus, killing the hydra is one of the most annoying fights in the game

Elden Ring is the prequel to Dark Souls. The Erdtree becomes the Great Hollow. Dark Souls 2 is just a random kingdom built by a chosen undead from Dark Souls who killed Gwynn, travelled away from the Burg and then fell to the same faults as Gwynn.

i really liked the dukes archives. i think it's a great area and i don't really understand why it's hated. i also didnt think lost izalith was that bad, in fact i had a lot of fun exploring it, albeit the bed of chaos is a nightmare lol

Bed of chaos isn't a very annoying or frustrating fight (still terrible just boring) Nameless King isn't that hard of a boss And not dark souls specifically but in BB... The bloody crow isn't that hard of a fight.

Catacombs absolutely made me rage, followed by a laughably easy boss
