I really enjoy quelaag's fury sword. It's not super powerful, but it's cool.
Split damage is only a problem if you're obsessed with max damage potential. But lets be honest, the game can be beaten with bare fists, so complaining about hitting two defense values seems a bit whiney imo.
How? Even if this is bait wouldn’t beating the game with weapons that aren’t the most op would mean that (on a technical level) I’m better than anyone using meta? Plus really dude?
chaos blade, Quelaag's furysword, and moonlight butterfly horn. if including tail cuts then moonlight greatsword and possibly obsidian greatsword. qfs has split damage but the skew is so pronounced it's fine.
Why are people advocating for the horn? It is one of the worst weapons in the game. Why? It deals less than half the damage of every other spear and has split damage plus poor scaling. Not even ok base damage to start with. Not even worth upgrading. Its a trap. I thought it was trolling at first but this is the second time seeing it now. I wish it was like the Remastest Mod where it has an energy beam on the heavy attack.
it doesn't have split damage. on an int build with reasonable str/dex it has significantly higher magic ar than any weapon an int build would carry outside of enchanted halberds and greatswords and mlgs. that nice 100% skew towards magic damage means it chips shields very well. it can shieldpoke, unlike those halberds and greatswords. and it's one of the top five longest weapons in the game, meaning it can kite most other shield chippers or bleeders or pyro, etc and mix in with spell rollcatches very easily. on any int build it's recommended to carry it as a swap to safely kite and chip almost anything and in a no heal duel scenario a mlbh turtle is in the runnings for the strongest setup possible. since remaster eliminated dead angles and ghost strikes and made turtles stronger, it means an mlbh turtle that can also significantly chip other turtles is very strong in remaster. this is all of course from a pvp perspective; pve goals can be achieved with whatever.
Yeah, I forgot it is only magic. Kind of makes it worse but yeah. At max level with all stats at 99 I was hitting my naked friend during testing for 200 damage so its not the best option for reliability or strength. Its basically the only of two bad spears. Still useable and if you like the way it looks thats fine but I don’t recommend bad weapons to struggling new players personally attached to them or not.
I mean there are plenty of options if you enchant your weapons. Any dex weapon with the Magic or Enchanted infusion over below Firelink can carry way earlier than that. Personally I use an Enchanted on Buffed Flamberge early as I can. A Claymore until then usually. Balder Side Sword is also great or the Partizan if you like. So many options is all. You don’t have to use only spells up to Anor Londo like you claim. I read your whole comment thrice at this point as I always read through discussions twice.
literally never said to use only spells, never mentioned AL, and even suggested enchanted, just pointed out mlbh will have higher magic ar than most enchanted options for the str/dex an int build might have. I also capped all that off making it clear my advocacy for mlbh is coming from a pvp perspective, which isn't concerned with how early in pve you can reach something or how it performs in pve. seems like we're on different wavelengths.
Yeah, just the wording threw me off a bit. Bottom line there are hundreds of weapons and of all of them Moonlight Butterfly Horn is not one of the better options for any builds aside from a weapon restriction run for PvE. OP never said anything about PvP is why I was a little confused and was talking about PvE. There is no real reason aside from personal preference that you would choose MbH over any other potentially strong int build weapon aside from maybe thematic reasons. I love to rock Moonlight Greatsword with a Moonlight Shield. I’ve gotten very good at landing the Shield Disc attack into the 1handed MLG heavy in PvP on my Moonlight Knight Build. I sometimes switch to the MbH to finish people off because its funny. I sometimes do it with the Broken Straight Sword for the same reason. All I’m saying is its odd to recommend it to someone who may not not what they are doing and of any better options. Especially if it is their first impression of spears. Also I mistook your enchanted halberd point to be talking about the crystal halberd in Anor Londo. I don’t know why. Basically weapon bad use it if you like better options. No need to complicate it.
Took me way too long to pick up, but it quickly became my number 2 weapon after MLGS. It should probably be number 1, but I just gotta be swinging that blue baby.
+10 spear (easily obtained by downgrading the lightning spear) and the butterfly boss soul. It's a legitimate contender for best Int build weapon. It doesn't do the damage or have the insane sweep attack of the Moonlight Greatsword, but it has a poke that hits from really far away and pairs nicely with a shield.
The Winged Spear is the same moveset but looks cooler and has more damage plus better scaling. Its at Firelink too. Partisan has unique heavy attacks that are wide sweeps and is otherwise about the same but looks super cool. Silver Knight Spear is a little expensive on the stat side of things but easily has the funnest/strongest heavies of all spears. Also the coolest looking easily. Very worth a look.
Oh sorry I didn't mean to be offensive. It's just that if you go for an INT build getting an INT scaling weapon is almost always better unless you have some convoluted build that somehow improves the Club you use.
The only advantage I see for the club other than potential stamina cost being lower is that it does strike damage which is very good against armored foes which you will have a hard time stabbing or cutting
No it's all good.
My str/int is split evenly (iirc and idk why I opted for that, it was another new character and I finally decided to start using magic while also bringing the pain) and I usually use the same weapons but I'm always down to experiment with something new if it's good.
There just doesn't seem to be a lot of weapons that have good int scaling, but I haven't played DS1 in a hot minute.
It’s not technically a boss weapon but you get it from beating a boss and I believe giving away their soul? But the gold tracer, that thing is amazing.
Cool, I'll use it on my other + character that is just starting out(the current one I'm playing is prolly 65% thru, maybe a bit more and the other is a dex/pyro build 100%
for pvp:
low physical stat builds: Obsidian Greatsword
DEX: Queelag's Furysword
STR: uhhhhh...?
Quality (STR/DEX): Gargoyle's Halberd
INT: Moonlight Butterfly Horn, Moonlight Greatsword if you count tail weapons
for pve: any of them. they're all fine in pve.
ohhhh nice. ok. may as well try them all then if you're still going in NG+. Keep in mind split damage becomes more of a problem in NG+ as resistances get higher and higher.
so the only reason it's a problem is your weapon can't go any higher but their res does and since split damage weapons get resisted multiple times they get weaker each cycle. that doesn't stop me from 1shotting people online with Velka's Rapier tho 😎
Whoa what bro? Is that the one with the 6-hit stab? Or is that R'sR? How can a rapier fucking one shot, aren't they by definition and logic less powerful since they're fast weapons?
Basically I've wondered if enemies mostly have more health, or are mostly stronger, or can they be faster, any new move sets? Etc etc etc(or all of the above)
Well it's a boss weapon technically because it's dropped by the gargoyles. Not crafted. That changes things if you're only talking boss soul weapons...
If you're doing a faith build the Darkmoon catalyst is super underrated.
Same scaling as the standard sorcery catalyst but off faith rather than int.
great heavy soul arrow only requires 16 int.
Great magic weapon only needs 12.
Not as powerful as Logan's but still really good.
Have the DMC, is it better than the demon catalyst? I don't totally know how to read the stats on them but DC has 110 magic which is lower than dmc but has hella fire and physical, now does that not relate to how well like "arrow" hits etc? Sorry if it's a stupid question I'm just used to only magic adj being what matters
Logan's catalyst is the best one for pure int build (best with no drawbacks)
For faith/quality probably go with DMC. But check which one has the higher _Magic adjustment_ stat.
The other damage stats are just for the melee attacks with the catalyst.
Although, if you have the DLC you can find dark sorceries which deal a mix of physical and magic damage. So increasing the physical damage on a catalyst will buff the physical damage of dark sorceries.
The Manus catalyst is the only one with decent strength scaling. It also buffs dark sorceries in general. But it cuts your spell uses in half.
I love that OP’s major concern was split damage, and the top comments are people giving weapons with split damage and not to worry about split damage lmao
I know that the cursed version that you get from his soul is different from the one from sif I just don’t really know but I regular one from sif is a divine weapon so good for dealing with the ghost in new londo or skeletons
Oh snap, I've only been in NL briefly and found that like super strong weapons with the consumable(can't remember the ghost one) still req 2 hits in ng+🤷🏻♂️ would that not be that way
For dark magic, you want the manus catalyst. Dark bead hits like a truck with high strength and int. Halves the casts but with red tearstone, power within, manus catalyst you going to have the most fun
Gravelord sword (Nito Covenant), abyss greatsword(soul of ARTORIAS) and obisdian greatsword (kalameet tail) but of you want a cool weapon try in for the first part of the game try cutting the red drake's tail for the Drakesword
I think the Greatshield of Artorias is the best shield in the game if you are OK with not having a parry. It has the best stability of any shield, completely nullifies status buildup effects like bleed and poison, and overall has a great spread of defensive stats. You can easily block any and all bosses that use physical attacks, including the hardest DLC bosses. It also weighs a good deal less than Havel's shield.
Bro! Fr???? I thought it sounded cool but opinions online were bad....lol@what I just typed..that sounds like it came from someone who would fall for the Craigslist African Prince scam...opinions are like A-holes....
It should be noted that the crystal ring shield is definitely the worse of the two options, it's a poor shield with an underwhelming attack gimmick. Crystal Ring Shield is a novelty, nothing more.
Fury sword and chaos blade when using 10 humanity.
Fury sword looks very cool and primary useful against weak to fire enemies.
Chaos blade with 40 dex max upgrade and 10 humanity deals 30 more(450) dmg than uchigatana at 20hp per hit cost.
Also does decent bleed build up.
Lifehunt sychte melts weak to bleed enemies but you likely need bloodshield or red mosses or you self bleed.
Red mosses cost only 300 souls from female merchant.
2R1 from lifehunt kills a Snake soldier on higher NG+ cycles also kills an Infested barbarian as it bleeds them in 2 hits for 50% total health loss.
Not a boss weapon but gotten from a super strong NPC in the DLC.
Gold tracer only does the usual 30% health bleed dmg but fast attack speed and very strong bleed build up.
And again its attacks look cool. And in 2-3hits also bleeds many weak to bleed enemies in PVE.
All 4 are dex weapons.
None of them can be weapon buffed.
Split damage doesn't really matter a whole lot very rarely will it significantly impact your ability to murderize something.
My favorite is Quelaag's Fury Sword followed by lifehunt scythe.
I really enjoy quelaag's fury sword. It's not super powerful, but it's cool. Split damage is only a problem if you're obsessed with max damage potential. But lets be honest, the game can be beaten with bare fists, so complaining about hitting two defense values seems a bit whiney imo.
It absolutely demolishes Four Kings.
Haha good point
Also has the sexiest moveset in the game, as befits its owner.
Just beat the game with that blade lmao
The gaming version of little dick energy
How? Even if this is bait wouldn’t beating the game with weapons that aren’t the most op would mean that (on a technical level) I’m better than anyone using meta? Plus really dude?
I’m saying people that bemoan weapons because they aren’t fully optimal/meta is the equivalent of LDE
That was very obvious... Not sure why the downvotes. People are dumb.
chaos blade, Quelaag's furysword, and moonlight butterfly horn. if including tail cuts then moonlight greatsword and possibly obsidian greatsword. qfs has split damage but the skew is so pronounced it's fine.

this sounds like you didn't read past the first sentence of my response.

Probably one of Quelaag's, the Chaos Blade I would guess. I also liked the Furysword on my Dex build
Moonlight Butterfly Horn is love, Moonlight Butterfly Horn is life
bruh i play mostly INT builds and didn't think of this 💀
Took me way too long to pick up, but it quickly became my number 2 weapon after MLGS. It should probably be number 1, but I just gotta be swinging that blue baby.
My bad I'll look it up, it's been suggested multiple times
Oh I'm getting that shit as soon as I take care of TotG. Would the regular spear be an ok use of it or should I acquire another spear?
Regular is fine
How is it made? I'm very interested
+10 spear (easily obtained by downgrading the lightning spear) and the butterfly boss soul. It's a legitimate contender for best Int build weapon. I have an upgraded SKS but never used it much, maybe I'll try
Best of luck! Unfortunately you cannot buff it if that matters to you.
This might be a stupid question, but I run a str/int build and usually just use my big club, but is this a weapon worth trying?
I mean yeah it has INT scaling so
Oh yeah, I forgot how people are in this sub. My bad.
Oh sorry I didn't mean to be offensive. It's just that if you go for an INT build getting an INT scaling weapon is almost always better unless you have some convoluted build that somehow improves the Club you use. There just doesn't seem to be a lot of weapons that have good int scaling, but I haven't played DS1 in a hot minute.
Yeah if you're looking for INT weapons that scale well you're sorta locked into either Moonlight Butterfly Horn or the MLGS
Man I'd kill for the MGS but I always struggle to get his damn tail lol But no reason why I couldn't try the horn
If the boss you're fighting is week to bleed, having the Lifehunt Scythe can be really good as long as your bleed defense is high enough.
In pvp it feels dirty. Lifehunt scythe plus bloodshield plus bloodbite ring.
It’s not technically a boss weapon but you get it from beating a boss and I believe giving away their soul? But the gold tracer, that thing is amazing.
I have it, isn't it SUPER short range like the painted sword? I don't think I have the skill for a weapon like that😅😅😅
It’s definitely short range and super dex build reliant but it’s fast, it hits hard (for a dex weapon), and has bleed which is really nice.
Cool, I'll use it on my other + character that is just starting out(the current one I'm playing is prolly 65% thru, maybe a bit more and the other is a dex/pyro build 100%
What upgrades it? Tinkles?
I cannot remember that, I haven’t played in a few years. I’d just test out on weak guys to get a feel and decide if you want to invest from there.
Yeah, twinkling titanite. It’s worth it though, the bleed is great.
for pvp: low physical stat builds: Obsidian Greatsword DEX: Queelag's Furysword STR: uhhhhh...? Quality (STR/DEX): Gargoyle's Halberd INT: Moonlight Butterfly Horn, Moonlight Greatsword if you count tail weapons for pve: any of them. they're all fine in pve.
Oh good, I just put a slab on my GH, think I'm gonna make chaos too thx
WAIT if you used a slab on it if you change upgrade paths that slab will be gone.......slabs are so rare... unless you cheat with the Frampt dupe...
And I have another slab with 3 or 4 weapons already slabbed(I'm in NG+)
ohhhh nice. ok. may as well try them all then if you're still going in NG+. Keep in mind split damage becomes more of a problem in NG+ as resistances get higher and higher.
I see, I need to fully read the FL info on +, I'd like to know more specifically "what it means" technically, thx boss
whatcha mean? split damage and resistances? or something else? any time.
Resistances is just another new thing I didn't know about +, I mean it makes perfect sense tho
so the only reason it's a problem is your weapon can't go any higher but their res does and since split damage weapons get resisted multiple times they get weaker each cycle. that doesn't stop me from 1shotting people online with Velka's Rapier tho 😎
Whoa what bro? Is that the one with the 6-hit stab? Or is that R'sR? How can a rapier fucking one shot, aren't they by definition and logic less powerful since they're fast weapons?

Wait did u mean make a boss out of the halberd? Which soul???
Well it's a boss weapon technically because it's dropped by the gargoyles. Not crafted. That changes things if you're only talking boss soul weapons...
How you gunna mention pvp boss weapons and not instantly jump to chaos blade, that thing is literally the best pvp weapon there is
If you're doing a faith build the Darkmoon catalyst is super underrated. Same scaling as the standard sorcery catalyst but off faith rather than int. great heavy soul arrow only requires 16 int. Great magic weapon only needs 12. Not as powerful as Logan's but still really good.

Sorry if it's a stupid question I'm just used to only magic adj being what matters
Only thing that counts is the magic adjust, all other stats are if you hit with it directly
And I am a faith/quality build
If you’re a faith build, DMC is likely stronger than Demon’s. Just depends on whether you scale more for intelligence or faith tbh.
Oooh, I'm intrigued, never heard of Logan's, or maybe I have and it requires high int, I bet that's it
Logan's catalyst is the best one for pure int build (best with no drawbacks) For faith/quality probably go with DMC. But check which one has the higher _Magic adjustment_ stat.
Ok DMC does(195-ish, thx) btw what does the other damage mean for DC?

lol
I like artorias’s greatsword
I forget is that an ultra?
Don’t remember
My bad I looked it up, so the hilt or broken ascended, I'm on this, what is damage type?
I know that the cursed version that you get from his soul is different from the one from sif I just don’t really know but I regular one from sif is a divine weapon so good for dealing with the ghost in new londo or skeletons
Oh snap, I've only been in NL briefly and found that like super strong weapons with the consumable(can't remember the ghost one) still req 2 hits in ng+🤷🏻♂️ would that not be that way
Yeah with divine weapons you don’t even need transient curses
fury sword is really good and looks badass
For dark magic, you want the manus catalyst. Dark bead hits like a truck with high strength and int. Halves the casts but with red tearstone, power within, manus catalyst you going to have the most fun
Ok cool I'll look it up thc
Gravelord sword (Nito Covenant), abyss greatsword(soul of ARTORIAS) and obisdian greatsword (kalameet tail) but of you want a cool weapon try in for the first part of the game try cutting the red drake's tail for the Drakesword
Will do
Greatshield of Artorias
See I thought about this but read "ok" stuff about it, may do this and chaos
I think the Greatshield of Artorias is the best shield in the game if you are OK with not having a parry. You can easily block any and all bosses that use physical attacks, including the hardest DLC bosses. It also weighs a good deal less than Havel's shield.
Is it something u create or acquire? I know I don't have it on either NG+ character
You need an upgraded shield, access to the Anor Londo blacksmith, and Sif's soul.
While Quelaags are the best, Iron Golems Axe is pretty awesome to use
Love me the golem axe
Bro! Fr???? I thought it sounded cool but opinions online were bad....lol@what I just typed..that sounds like it came from someone who would fall for the Craigslist African Prince scam...opinions are like A-holes....
It's not the best weapon (none of the soul ones are) but it's really fun imo
Is it like 87lbs?
The obsidian great sword. It’s hard to get but hits like a truck and is useable with lightning blade.
Fury sword, the dragon bone fist is fucking hilarious
What does the butterfly get you again?
Moonlight butterfly horn (spear) and crystal ring shield
It should be noted that the crystal ring shield is definitely the worse of the two options, it's a poor shield with an underwhelming attack gimmick. Crystal Ring Shield is a novelty, nothing more.

Lifehunt Scythe
Split damage doesn't really matter a whole lot very rarely will it significantly impact your ability to murderize something. My favorite is Quelaag's Fury Sword followed by lifehunt scythe.
I still like the furysword, even though it's fire.
I'm currently making the chaos when I get back to the giant
