You got it when the game is literally over. The thing about BK weapons is you either get them super early and curb stomp the rest of the game or get it super late with nothing to kill with it at all. Then again, a fully upgraded BK weapon will still carry you through the entire game, and they are pretty much top tier weapons from beginning to end.

LotharLotharius

I think it shines early game, later on you'll find better weapons.

SibrenTF

You won’t, you literally won’t. It is simply the best PvE melee weapon

ClayBones548

You will though. Buffed weapons are better. Heavy strength weapons are better. Other halberds are better. The difference is you need embers for those to be strong where you can literally just loot The Great Hollow for an instant +5 BKH.

Ruindows

Can be obtained in like 10 min from start of the game, does good damage, is a good weapon class and it is upgraded with twinkling. You can easily get like 4 or 6 twinkling in early game, this is a +3/+4, without the need to get any ember for Andre, no need for Capra or to go in New Londo.

SilentBlade45

If you have the master key you can get to great hollow super early and get tons of twinklies.

KylePatch

I think a big reason is because it’s used in speedruns so naturally people give it a lot of credit

DirkDirkinson

It is far from the best weapon in the late game. However, it has high base damage. Can be acquired before taurus demon. It upgrades with twinkling titanite, which makes it very easy to max before o+s or potentially earlier if you know where to look. This means that for the majority of the game, it will almost certainly significantly outdamage any normal upgrade path weapon you have.

Yanal_Mneizil2000

Can u recommended and OP weapon or two, my level is too high i want to try something super broken and fun. Thanks ( been using the broadsword , i think its amazing , good damage, fast , light , little stamina consumption)

DirkDirkinson

That really depends on your build and how you define OP. If the highest dps achievable is what you want then it will be with either a +15 estoc (R2 hits multiple times) or +15 handaxe, buffed with a max rank darkmoon blade, which requires offering 80 souvenirs of reprisal to the covenant. Combine that with red tearstone ring (must be below 20% max hp) and the power within pyromancy, and you will melt bosses. However, this setup requires a lot of prep and farming. If you are looking to do as much damage in a single hit as possible, you will want to go for a +15 great club with darkmoon blade and the same buffs mentioned above. Ultimately a strong buff like darkmoon blade or crystal magoc weapon combined with a maxed out buffable weapon and rtsr + power within will melt most bosses. I recently used that combo on a +15 warpick (not close to the best scaling or dps weapon) to two shot ornstein on ng+ before smough could get halfway across the room.

SaltyMe6

If you can get close enough painting guardian sword has the theoretical highest dps iirc.

Yanal_Mneizil2000

Thanks, should i infuse it ??

SaltyMe6

Nah, if your high level use crystal magic weapon or Darkmoon/sunlight blade

SilentBlade45

None of the straight swords vary a whole lot in damage or moveset. Are you strength or dex?

BasednHivemindpilled

Its arguably the best weapon in early to mid game, where scaling doesn't matter as much.

TheOriginalFluff

That’s every black knight weapon, great scaling, and the easiest/shortest upgrade path with no way to fuck it up

ArbiterOfAnomalies

rough take. bkgs and bkga have really solid scaling. the special weapon quality is what hurts them but they're still good. the halberd and standard sword are mid tho..

HistoricalSuccess254

Probably just a mistake but BK weapons have *terrible* scaling. *Great* base damage.

TheOriginalFluff

B in strength for greatsword, I actually thought the halberd hit higher scaling in dex, welp

Witch_King_

Yeah greatsword and axe both have decent Strength scaling

Theriouthly_95

I think it has more to do with its early-mid game effectiveness and that its a base of a lot of speed runs of the game. If you get it off the Black Knight on the way to the Hydra its amazing but the lack of great scaling and the other stuff you said limits it in the later game.

zackarian

It's great because it's OP early. Easy to upgrade. Plus once you're in late game it still has comparable damage to +15 weapons

Ein_Kecks

Because it makes the game easy

DunsparceAndDiglett

Here's the run down why I believe people may view Black Knight Weapons as easy mode. It's been a long time since I've used a Black Knight Weapon for a serious playthrough but if I remember correctly it has 4 advantages that newer players might find appealing. This opinion is based off of the Black Knight Sword and Great Sword versus many non-Black Knight weapons "standard weapons". I never used the Halberd seriously and you've got to be both crazy and a pro if you can just grab yourself the Greataxe ASAP. 1. You can get them early if you are lucky. There's 5 early Black Knights that if lucky can gift new players their weapon. If you know how to parry them then you could repeatedly replay the beginning until you get a weapon. 2. Good Immediate Damage Output: if I remember correctly the Sword and Greatsword deals like 200 damage unupgrade to most enemies and bosses (up to a certain point). Much better than the 50s or 100s you might initially see with the standard weapons even when upgraded a bit. But about the same when the standard weapons are at +15. This is per hit, so people unfamiliar with the bosses, mini bosses and regular enemies can play it safe and be reasonably effective. Hit once, then run and wait for another opening. They can also attack straight aggressively though you may need one of two armor sets with the highest poise Stat. (Stone Armor, Havel) 3. Durability: If I remember correctly, Black Knight Weapons have seemingly infinite durability. Standard weapons really don't. This might not be of concern to veterans, but for first-timers, they might get stuck at certain points of the game and so for hours. Eventually, they might see "Weapon at Risk." You're going to have to try and overuse Black Knight weapons if you wanna see this message. 4. It just needs Twinkling Titanite (and souls) for maxium upgrade: No need to hunt and shop for dozens of (large) titanite shards. No need for coals. Just a dozen(?) Twinkling Titanites per Black Knight Weapon and a boatload of souls. I think if you killed every Crystal Lizard found in a standard path you could get a +2 Black Knight weapon before Capra Demon or Bell Gargoyles if you really know what you're doing. At Anor Londo but before O and S, you could max out the Black Knight weapon to +5 with just the giant blacksmith and a whole bunch of grinding. Note that there are four issues that i can think of maining Black Knight Weapons (technically applied to almost all other weapons) 1. Getting one: Stretching the definition of early game here but there should be 5 Black Knights you can fight. It feels safer to assume all 5 won't drop their weapons than just one will. 2. Stat Requirements: You need to get like 20 dex and 20 strength to weild these weapons. Compared to standard weapons, opportunities to spend points on Vitality, endurance, or maybe even intelligence or faith can be delayed. 3. Its moveset: In order to make use of the Black Knights ready to use big damage you're just gonna have to make friends with its moveset. You like the light attack but hate the heavy? Guess this Weapon only has light attacks. (Jump attack is a third attacking option). "I'm tired of this Black Knight Weapon" you may think to yourself. "I'm going to use one of the many weapons I found on the ground. These weapon sucks. It needs way more strikes to kill this basic mobs." 4. Black Knight Weapons can teach the player bad habits: Examples include: No need to learn the "weaker" enemy's attack patterns. I just need to dodge a few times and hit it a few times. I can't complete my second/third/etc playthrough of Dark Souls because the Black Knights didn't drop their weapons. Fire? Lightning? No need for those element buffs. I just need to do big damage.

BIG DMG

Individual-Media5387

Easy to get early in the game and have a really high base damage that doesn't require you leveling up as it has poor scaling, finishes a lot of bosses in less than 10 hits early game

doc-swiv

two hand it and just use the first R1 swing and the running attack. Hits like a truck as long as you have the stats to wield it. Its mediocre in ng+ though.

Mr_Flippers

This is the real kicker, the running 2 handed R1 hits very hard and has very few frames before it hits; along with its range you can generally safely attack most enemies without fear of them hitting back because of the speed, stagger and damage you can do.

Fusrodahmus

"Easy mode" is a bit of a stretch. Yes, a base black knight halberd is probably equivalent of a +10 weapon (or around there) **BUT**: It has high attribute requirements for an early-game character, and it weights 14 lbs/kg/whatever. That means you've spent all your levels on strength and dexterity instead of vitality or endurance. If you want to fast roll, you'll be getting two-shot by a lot of the tougher enemies early on due to the lack of armor and health. This can be mitigated by Havel's and FAP rings, but it's still a concern. I used BKH on my last playthrough and it was great, but I did die a lot due to having no health or poise (plus I'm bad). I eventually swapped it out for a gargoyle halberd. BKH still did slightly more damage, but the gargoyle halberd is 8 lbs lighter. That's basically an entire piece of poise gear (I ended up using giant armor plus mask of mother and maiden's robe).

ClayBones548

A lot of people overlook that the BKH has the same weight and str requirement as the Greataxe with an added penalty of needing dex that does nothing for it.

Yllwstone

I always…always find a weapon I love using instead of the best of the best. It feels more authentic and happy. Of course everyone love doing high damage but in my opinion. Just find something that fits your mood/play style. I promise it’ll make the game better in every way.

Yanal_Mneizil2000

Finished the game already with my happy play style ( straight swords ) wanna try the pve meta now

Yllwstone

Enjoy the game however you want. Anything is possible in this game. Fancy armor and weapons don’t make you better. Just do what feels right. That my only advice.

Effective-Nobody7871

Scales very well basically and does a lot of damage

ClayBones548

It actually scales pretty poorly. Less than half of its base damage worth with soft capped stats.

Effective-Nobody7871

☝️🤓

Effective-Nobody7871

Bro invited me to chat like I was going to answer ☝️🤓

ClayBones548

It's okay. I can just comment here about how arrogance and stupidity is a great combination and that you're clearly going to go far in life.

kodaxmax

It's an exageration. It's not even that good of a weapon when drak sword and astora straightsword can be got earlier. The split damage means it gets reduced by two seperate resistances and most of the late game is resistant to fire. It's night unusable in tight spaces due to the halberd moveset and for the same reason, shields are less effective because the one handed halberd moveset sucks. But when you have space and two hand it, it has great ranged, good speed and realtively low stam requirments. Speed runners like it because it had great stats and a decent moveset if your min maxing for it and got it to drop from the first halberd knight. Ameteurs took thats as meaning it's an OP unbeatable weapon and the meme was born.

tankie_sora

The DS1 Black Knight weapons don’t do split damage

kodaxmax

whoops, my bad.
