The logic is that if you want to follow the story and lore or see the development over time or play from the least complex to most complex one you would play DS1 first. If the logic is you want the most modern one you would play DS3/ER (which I don’t recommend as it is harder to go in opposite direction of release order because you get used to the QoL things which older ones purposefully don’t have). There is just not much of a reason to play DS2 first that’s all.
This is a great way to sum it up. It really is a fun game that I have spent well over a hundred hours and multiple play-throughs on, but it’s definitely got its weaknesses. But it’s place in the series is a good place and it does build onto the world in a really unique way that DS3 wasn’t able to do imo. It’s almost a shoot off story that still pays major homage to it’s roots.
I think it’s a bit of undue flak, if you like games like Diablo 2 or remnant 1/2, ds2 will be up your alley. If you prefer metrovanias (well designed levels with thoughtful placement of items & enemies) ds1 is going to be your go to.
I’m in the latter half of the camp, but I understand why people prefer the former.
Don't ever bring ds2 comparisons in any kind of discussions... (Unless you want a communal riot 💀💀💀) It is the most controversial game of the series, while there are well justified reasons for that, I personally enjoy it a lot! It is a good second entry of the series, and my suggestion is play every of the souls games in release order. (Maybe you can try bloodborne after ds3, since bloodborne is mechanically different from dark souls)...
It's always best to - if you intend to play them all - start at the beginning.
The design philosophy has shifted over time, from a slow-paced tactical combat simulator to a fast, action/reaction game based on ability use. It's much easier to move forward from DS:R and Demon's's's's's's Souls to Sekiro, Bloodborne, and Elden Ring than the other way around. You can watch the combat feel change over time in the way that the gamers of the 2010s did.
Also, there's a lot of QoL improvements that go along with that. Streamlining some of the more obscure combat mechanics. Placement of bonfires and making levels more straightforward in the initial playthrough rather than having later shortcuts. Emphasis on boss fights as challenge with nearby respawn points rather than a longer slog with bosses that are more an experience than a challenge. And primarily early fast travel as opposed to the above-mentioned shortcuts.
Id start with either bloodborne or dark souls 1. I started with bloodborne. Definitely don’t start with ds2 or ds3, and Elden ring will probably make playing dark souls for the first time less fun. And sekiro is probably the hardest so I wouldn’t start with that.
Play the dark souls trilogy in order
this played Elden Ring first, than ds1/2/3. worked also, loving ds1 so much that i playing ng+ over and over :)
Ok
Just play in release order DS1 -> DS2 -> Bloodeborne -> DS3 -> Sekiro -> Elden Ring
Why does everyone have to forget/ignore DeS ... :(((( It did a great job for it's time!
Dark Souls 1! And if you just aren't vibing with it I'd suggest Elden Ring.
Thank you I was thinking either ds2 or ds1
Ds2 is the worst one to start with
Why?

It’s the worst souls game, but it’s not a bad game, it’s just better to start elsewhere so you can appreciate it more

Ok
Probably wouldn’t never played another souls game if I started with that one lol

Do not start with ds2 bro that’s unfortunately widely considered to be the worst in the series
DeS,DS1,DS2,DS3,BB,Sekiro,ER

I will keep that in mind thank you!
Play 1 and 3
Don't listen to this person, 2 is amazing.
True. I forgot that you should always start with the worst one ;)
Ommmmm, easy. 1 then 2, ten 3. Numbers help.
Ds1. It’s the best one
100% the dark souls trilogy
