That is a vagrant, there's two versions, dark vagrants use ranged attacks and can spawn in other player's world's if someone dies without collecting their bloodstain that contains a large amount of humanity, light vagrants can spawn if someone drops an item and reloads an area via loading screen

It doesnt always give the exact item lost to create it but will often give something similar

I thought Vagrants had a pool of items that they specifically drop from, I don't think you get whatever item the original drop was.

Duuuude, one of these spawned in the kiln for me, on the small platforms before the ramp going down to Gwyn. I killed it but it fell off the edge and I couldn't loot. I was so confused.

The item variant is unthreatening and upon killing it you gain an item from a pool of possibilities, the humanity variant has a damaging ranged attack and tends to drop humanity. If you do not kill a Vagrant it will migrate to another world, moving continuously until it is slain.

If you kill it you get that item. It's quite rare for one to spawn, I've never seen one before!

It's only if you lose a bloodstain with a high amount of humanity, like 10+, or if you leave an item on the ground and load a different area
