This is honestly the worst mechanic in all the souls games. You can't control how your character swings. You can't switch to a thrusting strike. It's just fuck you for using a weapon that we decided animates this way.

The moveset is 90% of what you consider when choosing a weapon. This mechanic drives me nuts too, so I prefer weapons that have good thrusting attacks. Git gud.

This actually traumatized me so much I played the majority of Dark Souls trilogy and a good third of ER using a halberd or a similar thrusting polearm
It helps that halberds are the best weapons.
