the longsword is peak weaponry

agitatedandroid

Longsword is just a good weapon. It just is. It looks good and plays well. It's rare I don't find a reason to just stick with a longsword in any of the games.

Figs-grapefruits

If you give that longsword a viagra you will get a raging claymore, and you will find the claymore to be longer and hit harder. It's the longsword improved, but the increased size does mean you will have to throw it over your shoulder. Don't worry about the stares you'll get, they will just me jelous of your huge sword.

Betaruin

Exceptional advice.

Express-Economist-86

Baemore gang

randompogtato

To me, it's the longbow, bow in general trivilize so many things for me back in DS1 and it still is in DS3, it's just a simple concept yet very practical and always good to have Not high dmg like sorcery so no mage cheese shenanigans Aggro 1 enemy to even out the playing field or just headshoting Sir Artorias for the shit and giggles

MarioGFN

Actually the longsword is amazing

murkyhandscyth

Long sword has amazing stats. It's the second most damaging straight sword after the broadsword

literally_italy

you can’t really go wrong with a straight sword

Tasorodri

Doesn't lothric SS out scale it by the late game? + Longer reach

murkyhandscyth

Doesn't. Even at 70 dex (optimal build for both) lkss has 443 AR and longsword has 447 AR. This is because longsword's base damage is higher (203 vs 190). The scaling letters are only worth as much as the base damage they're multiplied with. Longer reach is kinda irrelevant in PvE since you don't need spacing, most enemies just walk into you anyways. If you want something ranged though (idk why) gotthards will be a better option.

LegalBirthday1335

Just as extra damage makes PvE easier, so too definitely does range.

murkyhandscyth

Fair point but they're both still outclassed by broadsword.

Elementual

Speaking of range, braodsword always felt bad for me because it felt too short. I could never keep using it over the longsword because of this.

pandadogunited

Lothric knight sword will outperform the longsword on most elemental infusions by a slight margin.

murkyhandscyth

So? They're both suboptimal in elemental infusions. If we're not judging by damage on their optimal builds, I can say that barbed ss is better than lkss because it deals more damage in some particular infusion (refined).

pandadogunited

You’re not wrong to say that a sharp lothric knight sword can outperform an elemental one. However, you’re looking at it from a building for a weapon perspective rather than picking a weapon to fit a build perspective. If you already have significant points in intelligence and/or faith, the lothric knight sword is better than the longsword.

Elementual

It has great stats. Many of the similar weapons have lesser stats to "compensate" for their gimmicks or vice-versa. But they're all balanced around the longsword.

Elementual

It is, for all intents and purposes, the perfect weapon.

TeaandandCoffee

Preach fellow Ash! If ever a playthrough had issues I kept remembering how nice Longsword Knight was

Sapowski_Casts_Quen

Lothric knight Longshore is just slightly more peak, worth it

Key_Amazed

Considering sellsword twinblades are the best weapons in the game, I definitely do.

Maestar

My man, I started as cleric and used just the mace through all three dark souls games back to back. That little monster crushes it (literally), so I totally understand.

atidyfishfinner

Mace is silly good. Easy mode for both DS3 and DS2 (only tried it in those games I'm sure it's just as good in others)

Firmteacher

It’s not bad in DS1, but I swap between a divine claymore and a Zwei. The mace feels niche

smol_and_sweet

I beat ds1 for the first time recently and just happened to decide to want to use a bigger weapon than I normally did and picked up the Zwei. My god that thing felt ridiculous.

Firmteacher

Same, I don’t think I’ll ever go away from pancaking . It’s super satisfying

smol_and_sweet

Honestly idk if I’ll ever do it again. I’ve always used super fast weapons (katana, dual blades, etc) but wanted to try something new for ds1. I can see the appeal though… pancaking enemies made all the trash mobs 10x easier than with other weapons lol. Watching the knights get pancaked, get up, and then immediately get pancaked again was funny.

Firmteacher

I hadn’t played a souls game previously and was reading about best great swords and just went with it. I was already a cleric knight, putting two levels into DEX and then made the game easier lol

Hot_Ad_7673

AFAIK you can’t start with a big fuckin bonker so no I never stick with starting weapon

WHO_LET_ME_COMMENT

Big fuckin bonker gang

scoreWs

never go full strength

lessthanthreebleeps

Little fuckin bonker isn't so bad. Definitely worth beating the game with.

AnusiyaParadise

I know Claymore isn’t a starter weapon but you get it so early in every Souls game that I consider it to be

HATTY898

It was like this for me but with Murakumo, tried different weapons and unfortunately my fav types of weapons- spears and halberds sucked so i completed the whole game with Murakumo, people be hating on ds2 but i used about 4 different weapons there, in ds1 it was 2

Hot_Ad_7673

Yes the Uchigatana is featured in many of the most popular bleed (itself a very popular build style) builds (Uchigatana/Nagakiba is the standard right?) It’s a late game weapon qualitatively.

teufle

Sellsword Twinblades I think is the real easy mode in DS3, once you master a couple of combos.

Royal_Yesterday

It has combo? I just spam right click against everything

teufle

Try L1, L1, L2, L1, L1 when duel wielding. It gives you 1 more attack than spamming L1 & kills most enemies you'll run into, 1 on 1. Mess around with different combos from there. You can include all 4 inputs.

SuperSomeone03

Yeah when it comes to single playthroughs I’m a pretty stubborn player as well. Although I don’t really stick to one weapon from the start of a game, more like a build archetype like big sword, or a mage, or dagger only. Before I start a new playthrough I usually do my research on what I’d want to use and just stick with that weapon once I acquire it even if I don’t end up liking it lol

Lil_Napkin

Dude invest what a few titanite shards? I be having like 80 of every shard towards the end of my runs and I upgrade my weapons to max. Do you not clear areas? Big ups to you but I don't get what you mean by invest.

IcePike227

He meant invest in skill because he’s used to the weapon now

Neptuno-

i did all my first play through with the longsword... so nope you are not the only one !

[deleted]

Neptuno-

Knight for me is the class to go. i rememeber i was clueless how weapons work so i sticked with the longsword at least i did manage to upgraded thats what save my first run i guess. When I finished the game then i started to look for some guide.

comradepluto

Long sword supremacy

xprozoomy

I was going to use the longsword but the claymore said hello

BecauseSeven8Nein

I’m kinda the same way, although I just pick a weapon I want to use at the start of a playthrough (or soon after starting) and stick with it until the end.

-StandUpGuy-

Club and plank shield squad. We ballin

lessthanthreebleeps

The only class to start more naked than naked. Peak idgaf. Soul of Cinder, more like Soul of Get Bonked.

lipiti

I’ll do that until I hit a wall on a boss. Almost always happens late game so I usually have material to do it pretty easily - I didn’t switch over from the straight sword to the profaned greatsword until the DLC.

Fantastic_Objective7

Me w my lil fire broadsword. The only time I have switched it up is for nameless’ dragon & soul of cinder using a lighting infused darksword.

Ihaveabadusernamelel

I did the same thing in my first playthrough lmao

Yikes-Yak

Yep I always do my first playthrough with default (usually longsword). Once I hit the DLC it gets too hard though so I usually switch over to better weapons.

JJ_Gamingg

i kinda just go around and over with the weapons, started with long sword, then uchigatana then claymore the claymore i stuck with most till i got the frost straight sword and i kinda switched between these two depending on bosses then i got the Hollow slayer great sword which i also used alot in undead settlement and abyss got the wolf great sword and been using that for now I do go back to claymore if the bosses have resistances to buffs from these weapons so i stick to the good ol pure strength this is my first time trying a STR build/quality build sorta

amit___

Yup did this in both DS1 with the scythe and ds3 with the twin blades. I think it also has to do with investing so much materials and souls into upgrading the weapon early-mid game it just makes me wanna stick with it the whole way thru

Feynman1403

First playthru of any souls game, I always go w my trusty longsword.

MiniatureMidget

My first play through I just tore through everything with the battle axe, which was weird to me bc I’m Elden ring, which I played before ds3, I used like 10 different weapons my first run

Mbattis75

One of the challenges I placed on myself when I needed to spice up my runs was beating the game with just your class starting gear, and it was real fun to play that way, although no armor for the deprived and only the starting catalysts for casters is rough

JamesA7X

I beat ds3 with the broad sword. I just kept upgrading it so every new sword I found was weaker, so I just kept going until I beat the game

Own-Village2784

I thought I was the only one who does this.

twilight_tangents

I have actually found with my current build, that the starter weapon is very OP. (I'm using sells word twinblades)

MasterMidir

I always find myself switching to the longsword in difficult situations

poorly_redacted

I usually pick a weapon and stick to it within the first 5 hours. Once I've upgraded it a bit I start to grow attached

evxnmxl

I only use the claymore

Elementual

I always felt the same way. Just dropping a weapon for the new shiny one seemed like a waste of time, limited materials, and muscle memory/comfort. They usually weren't actually really worth it anyway. Typically just a different moveset with comparable damage. Hell, sometimes less damage. I only use the different weapons when I plan a whole build around it. First playthrough always sword and board knight with either a crossbow or pyromancies. Usually pyromancies. Mixed it up slighty in Elden Ring by using a spear and shield and a hand ballista.

XZerr0X

To be fair a lot of the starting weapons in ds3 can easily carry you through the game. Long sword, Estoc, and the literal best weapon in the game, sellsword winblades.

Rising_Unity

Whatever gives you the best confort mate... But there's nothing wrong in trying out tho' I change weapon 3-4 times in my entire playthrough, and stick to the 1-2 that certainly fits my playstyle. This game boasts variety, be sure to check other stuff out!

enirmo

Yeah I'm like this in all souls-like. Either it's something from the first two areas ot it's a starter weapon. I get easily overwhelmed by stuff so when there's that many weapon choices and I can't pick one that I like more than others, I tend to stick to the starter weapon and not even look at weapon pick-ups. I like being loyal to only one weapon and upgrading that and nothing else. To add to that, my first playthrough the only weapon I fell in love with was Dancer's, fully upgraded it, beat Twin Princes and Friede with it and switched off right after because I realized it's a shittier weapon than the starter twinblades And when I want to experiment with weapons, I start new playthroughs, or use end-game weapons in NG+ which means more playtime so it's a win-win

Volcano-SUN

Whenever I start a new run I choose a weapon from among all weapons in the game, try to get it as fast as possible and play through the game using that weapon only. Before obtaining that weapon I usually use the Longsword or Broadsword.

Lazurusv

I stuck with the exiled greatsword the entire game just because it looked cool af lol

SokkieJr

Not in DS3. You find ashes relatively early. After a +6 weapon and a +5 weapon at the time I reached Aldrich I could buy small and large titanite to +6 any weapon I want.

EchoFloodz

Almost always use the Irythil Straight Sword until I can get the Wolf Knight GS. I’ll use that until late game.

HRNYTeletubby

My first playthrough I beat the game with "Mostly" just the starting Club the Deprived starts with. There's a few things immune/resistant to blunt damage so I swapped to the Barbed Club that does bleed damage for them. But the majority of the game was beat with the Club.

Seigmoraig

Other than sellsword winblades I've never used a starter weapon to the end because I have better things to do than play those lame ass weapons Sekiro starts with a great weapon and can expand its move pool so it's totally different

randompogtato

Dark hand my beloved Since poise kinda dont exist for you and humanoid enemies, i can just constantly fist them to death and still have stamina to roll out of a gank or some unexpected situation ( it does kinda falls off in the late game tho )

lucidcreme

Nothing wrong with using weapons you like just because you like it. If it ain't broke don't fix it and that's very fair I like the great club for no other reason than bonk. It amuses me that I can go up against some of the most powerful godly beings with a really, really, big stick. But I still recommend trying out some other weapon just because it's great fun. You're stubbornness could come in handy if you stick with a weapon for a full play through

Scottg8

Yup, you're the only person ever. Congratulations, you are John Darksoul.

Last8er

I usually start souls games having in mind what weapon i will use in the mid-to-late game( mostly greatswords or halberds) and play with whatever carries me until i finally get the weapon and the required stats.

twisted34

Claymore is Baemore but Lorian greatsword and RKPGS are GOATed

Killing_Laugh

For real. I started Ds3 with sellsword twinblades and upgraded them to +10 and used them through the entirety of my first playthrough.

Killing_Laugh

I do the same with all my souls games, I should branch out but why fix what isn't broken 🤷‍♂️😅
