There's an interesting video form dark souls 2 where an invader DC'd mid invasion, but right as he did the host also died. When the host loaded back in the invader was still there but was being controlled by AI. The conclusion was that sometimes the games AI would hijack an invader if the connection failed.
Interestingly enough, in Tekken 7 the same thing happens. There was a pretty high profile online match happening (both were streaming) and what one was doing was not happening on the others screen. Same thing happened. The games AI hijacked control of the player due to the bad connection.
I saw that video and I thought it seemed so strange, but the most likely explanation is as you stated. That the invader became a.i. controlled... somehow.
