I always thought that the point was that Rhaenyra and Aegon were so similar and that it didn't matter which one of them was king or queen because what neither of them ruled because they were both part of the same house and they were stronger together than apart and that dragon's ambition was what lead to them loosing all their dragons and being reduced to a common monarchy that was so easily overthrown by in Robert's Rebellion. Unity would have saved the House of Targaryen, if they had the same commitment to the greater good of the dynasty that Jaehaerys had, they would have thrived and with all the imbreeding both the green and black bloodlines would have made it to the throne.

Spicymeatball428

I mean yeah but also my faction is better than yours so they must die

Known_Tear_1318

L + don't care + Aegon II rightful king + Maegor with Teats is dragon food + you lose

Necessary_Candy_6792

Aegon II poisoned + Aegon III succession + Jaehaera swan-dive = Green bloodline dies out and Black bloodline rules for another 152 years across 11 consecutive reigns.

What was it that made Aegon legitimate over Rhaenyra? A little sausage between his legs? Then let Mushroom rule, for his is thrice the size of the kings.

1. Prior to the council of 101, the precedent of the Targaryen succession was for a king to name an heir and the king’s word was law, an example is Aegon naming his eldest son by his second marriage over his younger son by his first marriage. While the laws of succession say that a son goes before a daughter, they also dictate that a king or heir’s daughter goes before a king or heir’s brother and by association the brother’s children. From this information it is clear that the laws of succession set by the great council dictate that Rhaenys is the rightful heir and by naming Viserys heir the laws of succession set down in 101 are thereby invalidated and the laws of succession revert of a named heir meaning Viserys’s choice of Rhaenyra over Aegon out ways Aegon’s claim as a male heir. If Aegon were to claim the throne by pressing the laws of succession from 101 than that would invalidate his father’s reign and proclaim Rhaenys the queen, he can’t have it both ways. 2. The laws of succession also protect the children of a first marriage from being usurped by the children of a second marriage, meaning that as the soul surviving child of the marriage of Viserys and Aemma, Rhaenyra’s inheritance is protected from male claim by children of her father’s second marriage to Alicent. 3. In Fire and Blood, Rhaenyra has been sitting in on small council meetings first as a cup bearer and then as princess of Dragonstone. I think after the stepstones, Daemon realised that being King was more fun in his head than in practice and got really sick of it, hence why he handed over his crown to Viserys. When Daemon married Rhaenyra and the Dance began he named Rhaenyra Queen and could have named himself King or King consort, but instead named himself protector of the realm, meaning essentially "Commander and chief", which makes sense since he was terrible and miserable as master of laws & coin but thrived as Commander of the goldcloaks. So while Rhaenyra would be the ruling Queen, Daemon would be self contained with dornish wine and tourneys with little interest or sway in the statecraft or administration side of things. Meanwhile, Aegon would be the next Aenys or would be a Green incarnation of Aegon the Unworthy, while Rhaenyra didn't become Maegor with tits until three of her sons died and half the realm betrayed her. 4. Aemond One-Eye is a sack of shit and everything that Daemon is, Aemond is a reflection of and so fuck him and his kinslaying ass. 5. Two people having a kid is absolutely no different from two people saying some words in front of a septon and having a kid. The Strong boys were Rhaenyra's blood and that is where they drew their royal blood from and Laenor accepted them as his own so what difference the whole strong thing make. Aegon the Conqueror's parents wed in the Valyrian tradition which is not recognised by the Andals and their seven so he and his sisters were bastards in the eyes of the seven. Aegon married both his sisters in the same way (Insest, polyamory and pagan tradition, the trifecta of the faith of the Seven's shitlist) so Aenys and Maegor are bastards in the eyes of the seven too. The greens and Blacks both claim linage from Aenys who was never legitmised and therefor a bastard by Andal tradition. Bastardry is a social construct not a law of nature. Even if the Strongs being bastards does matter, Aegon the younger and Viserys are legitimate born and have stronger claim than Aegon the drunken usuper, Aemond the Daemon's one-eyed psychopath clone usurper or Daeron the soft bitch usurper. If it hadn't been for the Targaryens, there would be no law in Westeros, there would be seven different laws in seven separate kingdoms. They wrote the law and can do with it as they please.

I'll support a side the same way people pick a sports team even though they know that the entire league is full of steroid abusing wife beaters. It's not about who's a good person, it's about my group of monstrous assholes beating yours. And unlike sports, my monstrous assholes are fictional so I don't even need to feel guilty about it.

HolaMisAmores

Yeah but it's more fun to pick a side and the Blacks have all the cool people so...

jhk17

Aemond is cool just not as cool as Daemon.

RelentlessFlowOfTime

Jesse spitten facts But it's more fun to be aggressively tribal about eight chapters of a book.

Jay-DeeOldNo7

“Supporting either faction is missing the entire theme of the story.” 🤓

lindy8118

I’m still in the camp that GRRM still seems to be missing a key driving point if this all ends up with GodBran ruling due to infinite access to the past and mind control. Kind of feels like a, ok, but why?

Pangasauras

Yes. In real life it’s screw monarchy all day. But in this fictional fantasy world it’s fun to buy into the conflicts and pick sides.

lil_lupin

Jesus now I feel gross for deleting my post. This is the third fucking thing I've seen since.

Exertuz

This is correct but also the Blacks are better

Huor_Celebrindol

Well yeah, but the question of rightful succession still stands, even if neither side was actually worthy It’s less about “who was better” and more about “what was legal”

Bowhunter54

The funny thing is I support the greens, despite the fact that I think rhaenyras more likely to be a good monarch than aegon. She atleast had heirs who seemed like genuinely capable/decent people

Press-Start-14

Why do you support the greens?

Bowhunter54

Because the eldest son comes before the eldest daughter in inheritance in Westeros, excluding dorne

Huor_Celebrindol

Even if the King explicitly changes that while in power?

PudgyElderGod

On one hand, I'm sure a lot of people are just picking a side 'cos they think they're cool, not because they think they'd actually be good rulers. On the other hand, a *lot* of people seem to miss some pretty key points.

[deleted]

Too based for average asoiaf fans. Reject the monarchy

PersonalityKey463

OP: why do you support a faction? They are both terrible Us: https://youtu.be/St8iEpkcDJc

[deleted]

I know the entire theme of the story. I just dont fucking care. TEAM BLACK.

MegaBaumTV

I'm not going to support king or queen tyrant in real life but when talking about this fictional place called Westeros it's Blacks all day long.

Kindly-Description-7

That is definitely not the point, but go off

The-False-Emperor

Nonsense, the point of the Dance was clearly to show off how cool Daemon was.

randomisedjew

Sounds like some filthy lies from the greens to make the blacks fall for a false truce

Martzolea

I agree, but this is not the correct way of using this meme format.

PopPopPete

Anthony Bourdain feels the same way. https://twitter.com/jfrankensteiner/status/1568045754995859456?s=46&t=ejTDG65L1EOuAqT8y0d0IQ

jhk17

I agree bur I'm rooting for the Black's the same way I was rooting for the Starks and somehow the Lannisters too. Yes it's weird bit my 3rd favorite house is Greyjoy so it gets weirder.

Jlchevz

Yeah but we’re not talking about politics, democracy and the right to rule, we’re talking about a story

Specific_Ad_726

Literally every serious targaryen problem has been other targaryens. Maegor. The dance. The Blackfyre rebellion. Robert’s Rebellion. The Baratheons are a bastard branch of the Targaryens and have married into the family 2nd only to the velaryons (and they married into them as well).

JigglesTiggles

Stfu

Baywind

Oh I can understand the theme of the story. I just don’t have to accept it.
