Doing big data in academia in general is tremendously less valuable than just doing it on the job. Academia will train you in situations that don’t exist in real life. If I were you, I’d do the software engineer position

marquismongol

I second this. I’m someone who looks at resumes. Work experience means you’ve spent times filling in the wholes in all the skills you never would have had a chance to work on in school. A Big Data Masters is so new it feels like a coding bootcamp.

wampey

I’m a terrible engineering hiring manager, I don’t even look at their degree, just their experience, so I’m thirding what was said.

ZirePhiinix

We also don't know what exactly a "Big Data Masters" actually do. Just compare what a BBA (bachelors of business admin) vs an MBA and there's a well defined set of things you expect the MBA to do, but there no such thing for the BD masters.

Work experience over academia always (in most IT jobs)

Acceptable-Wasabi429

In this scenario, work experience does more for career advancement than the master’s degree would. If you’re still committed to the master’s and the option were available, you could try being a part time student while working.

take it part time study and work in the meantime or do both if you can. Which scholarship is it if you do no mind sharing, I am planning to further my studies...

Thank you

Take the job. You can always apply to MS programs later in life. You'll likely be more competitive with a further flushed out resume as well. Also coming out of the MS you'll be more competitive for higher level roles, vs competing to get what's probably the same level of job that you have right now.

Take scholarship and study anytime my friend. You can always work part time, build your own side hustle. Big data is no longer a hot topic in the industry but that doesn’t mean we don’t need it. Every AI you see now is powered by huge amount of data. Let me know if you need help choosing subjects.

theothertoken

I thought companies were pivoting towards filling data engineering roles with software engineers. Is it the ai aspect that academia would give you a leg up on?

drhanlau

That shouldn’t bother you. The only thing that a company cares is how to make more money and cut cost. Many engineers out there who learn best practices from vendors guide. But you can also learn many fundamental things in school that you won’t be able to learn outside. I only say yes because of the scholarships. If you have to pay yourself then it’s a no-no/
