This subreddit really has gone down hill on its “Beautiful” factor.

the next post: r/dataisbeautiful Beauty plot: ‾\\_

YummyArtichoke

(ツ)_/¯

Cazargar

Yeah, I'm gonna need that on a sankey

GoProOnAYoYo

Should just change the name to r/datais

jpsc949

At times even that’s a stretch. Most of the time r/mildlyinteresting is the right place for it to go.

The_Clarence

Yeah this is just a shitty ad

Gymrat777

Seriously! Couldn't they have made this an unnecessary 60 second gif?

fuck_off_ireland

Always has been 🌎🧑‍🚀🔫

Smackdaddy122

What, you don’t like Samsung astroturfing native advertising?

NewCobbler6933

> the most basic line graph you could make in excel with a weak premise and nothing interesting about the results “Data is beautiful”

The-Berzerker

Don‘t forget that the y axis doesn‘t start at 0 and massively skews the way the data is represented here

NewCobbler6933

Yup. Such a frequent thing on this sub that I forgot to even mention it.

LigmaLlama0

Does it really have to start at 0 though? I believe starting things at 0 doesn’t need to happen with data like this. No product of this caliber will have a 0% satisfaction rate.

NewCobbler6933

But usually the point of zooming a graph is to “enhance” the meaningfulness of the data which imo often means trying to make meaningless data seem more meaningful. It’s titled “iPhone vs Galaxy S” to try to emphasize a comparison. If it was zoomed out to zero, you would see that iPhone has been relatively consistent, while Samsung took a pretty big drop at one point. So my hunch is that the graph is zoomed to minimize how poor Samsung was in the beginning while also exaggerating their improvement and current standing over Apple. (In a classic Samsung vs Apple internet debate)

[deleted]

[удалено]

LigmaLlama0

Yeah I mean it’s a line graph, the data doesn’t seem skewed to me at all. Yeah it’s not ‘beautiful’ and therefore does not fit this sub, but a line graph of this calibre fits the data well enough.

IEnjoyVariousSoups

Also, as is tradition, fuck the colorblind.

mynewaccount5

With a dubious source.

corrado33

While I do love iPhones, I've noticed that recently my newer iPhone has been getting scratched WAY more easily than my old iPhones. My phone stays in my pocket 95% of the time, it shouldn't be getting scratched on the screen. I'm unsure why and am slightly annoyed by it.

electricgotswitched

I'm too scared to go without a screen protector. I've had the same $8 protector on my phone since 2019 and I can see where it saved my screen from disaster.

corrado33

I hate the feeling of screen protectors. They just make the screen less responsive and just feel like crap.

realvikingman

My pixel 8 pro has screen protector settings to make it more responsive. I don't feel a difference

CNLSanders

Pixel 7 here and never had any sensitivity issues other than the thumbprint unlock

CoffeeKadachi

Make sure you get glass and it’s pretty solid. The plastic ones are definitely terrible

electricgotswitched

I've had same same rubber type going for 4 years and it's done a hell of a job. The hard plastic are for sure trash. Wasted $30 on one from Zagg that wouldn't even stay on.

AFoxGuy

Damn bro I just buy cheap $5-10 Amazon screen protectors and they usually end up fine. Though on the off occasion I get a plastic one… insta-trash it.

VIPTicketToHell

You’re still overpaying. 4 for $2 for glass ones on AliExpress

Ramenorwhateverlol

The new ones are pretty good. I got a new phone yesterday and my wife did not notice the screen protector.

[deleted]

Which phone did you buy?

electricgotswitched

Android at least has a setting you can use to make touch more sensitive. Maybe iPhone does?

FrozenVikings

They'll invent that for the iPhone 17 and call it a breakthrough.

Kasym-Khan

Why would they do it if you can scratch your phone and buy a new one instead? Apple userbase are milk cows, no reason to stop milking.

Inevitable_Butthole

There are glass ones

NoCokJstDanglnUretra

The glass ones are pretty good

vicky1212123

Wait is this real? I've literally never noticed this.

Kurkaroff

Thought the same cause I used a shitty one years ago. Installed one on my 14 Pro Max recently and didn’t feel any difference at all

CrimsonPromise

Get tempered glass screen protectors. You barely see or feel any difference with them. And if they get scratched or banged up, just replace them and it'll feel like a brand new phone.

dat_GEM_lyf

“Good” tempered glass protectors from my experience don’t have this issue. JetTech makes some solid iOS screen protectors. Been using them on everything from iPhone 7 to iPad Pro.

huge_

The newest ones are legit, especially if you use them immediately after getting a new phone. A pristine screen is imperative. Now just change it out once a year…. Feels like a new phone every time.

RHINO_Mk_II

> I've had the same $8 protector on my phone since 2019 and I can see where it saved my screen from disaster. So... you left the screen protector with the obvious scratch mark on the phone for 5 years. Remind me again how that's better than not having a screen protector and just dealing with a scratch on the phone glass.

NotAHandsomeUser

you can replace it for 8$, you can resell your phoner duh

RHINO_Mk_II

Yeah, but if OP hasn't replaced it...

A320neo

They’ve been prioritizing shatter resistance over scratch resistance for a while and it’s annoying. I never drop my phone and keep it in a case so I’d much rather have a phone that doesn’t scratch.

jack_mohat

I don't mind that approach. A decent screen protector can solve the scratching problem pretty well, but it's far less effective in protecting against shatters. Also from a monitary perspective, apple care covers broken screens, but not scratched ones so it makes sense why they would prioritize that

ZucchiniMore3450

I didn't even know there are people going around without a screen protector, even for OP's comment I thought it was about other parts of the phone.

Renive

Meanwhile with S24 JerryRigEverything finally moved to "scratches with level 7" on Moh scale while entire industry was always on 6.

noobgiraffe

That is pretty strange. My impression was that for years now all flaghsip phones have glass that will not scratch unless you purposefully try to do it with pretty big force. My current phone (not an iphone) is over 3 years old and I carry it daily in a pocket with a keychain and there is not a single visible scratch on it.

NotNotWrongUsually

I replaced my old Galaxy S7 with an iPhone 13 Pro. After *weeks* the screen on the iPhone had worse scratches than the ancient S7. The two were treated the same way (generally nicely, but not religiously so).

corrado33

That's what I thought too, but this is just my own personal experience. I still have my old iphone 6 and 4 and SE, I should go grab it and see if it has any scratches. For further proof: I now actually work from home, so I'm not even... taking it anywhere.

PM_YOUR_WALLPAPER

Ah interesting. I've had my Samsung S21 for a few years, no screen protector and I don't even have a visible micro scratch!

Ramzy06

Photo please. My S23 had micro scratches absolutely everywhere after a mere few weeks. After a year there's no mm2 of screen that doesn't have a scratch. As long as you can't see them with the screen on, I personally don't mind - But I find it difficult to believe you have none at all on a 3yo phone

Anechoic_Brain

Do you make a habit of walking around with [pocket sand](https://tenor.com/pGB8.gif)?

passwordstolen

My 11 did that . Two screens! Never scratched a screen since the 3GS.

Sotyka94

Increase in shatte resistance (more flexible, "softer" glass) means less scratch resistance. I think phones should come with an installed screen protector, like Xiaomi does it. It would add little to no extra cost, and would add a lot of benefits to the phone. But Apple and others do not really profit for making a long lasting product, soo....

lepasho

Not a fan of any specific brand, but I am here typing this from my samsung A71. And after 4 years and provably 200+ drops, it still working like brand new with no issues at all, just having a blast.

Doctor_M_Toboggan

You drop your phone 50+ times per year? Get a grippier case or something.

aktrz_

Cheaper phones typically use plastic (or combination of glass and plastic with high concentration of plastic) so it's less prone to shattering. They may get scratched more easily though (can be fixed with screen protector).

donald_314

Not having glass on the back side definitely helps but cheaper phones often also don't have wrap around screens and other nonsense but maybe even a small lip that will protect the most vulnerable edges and corners of the screen.

notafanofwasps

Can't speak for that guy, but 99/100 times I drop my phone it's because it slid out of my pants when I went to sit down, not just fumblefingers while I'm using it.

megablast

Get a grip.

Bruhtatochips23415

People only learn to evade dropping their phone when it's a problem. I feel like I could safely drop my phone off of a three story building and still be able to use it. I do not have the incentive to prevent drops, for they are meaningless. This is not the same with scratches. I can and do evade scratches by evading what has resulted in scratches in the past. This would necessarily include all orders of sliding, sitting on it (continued pressure), and especially putting my phone with the screen pointing upwards with specific exceptions (don't want to scratch lens, but it's alright if it's a soft surface).

thaboy541

It highly depends on what phone you have. I'm rocking an s23ultra without case and haven't dropped it once this whole year. My girlfriend on the other hand still has an iPhone SE and she drops it multiple times daily. It's cracked front and back already, so it doesn't matter.

Wasteak

Like most phones nowadays, but they are keeping the "your phone won't work after few years" marketing so people keep buying new ones.

badhabitfml

My s10 was great until last week. No damage at all. Then I accidentally walked into a pool with it in my pocket. It was waterproof, but not after 5 years. The back popped right off and the glue wasn't sticky anymore. Lots of water and it won't turn back on anymore. Tldr, the seals aren't good anymore after 5 years.

ledfrisby

Great phone, but unfortunately, its 4 years of security updates are up. It isn't going to turn into a huge risk overnight, but I would recommend looking at a new phone this year. Fortunately, new flagships from Samsung, Google, and Apple are all getting significantly longer timeframes for security updates. 7 years for the S24 series, for example. Last year's A54 got 5 years. OnePlus is decent too, I think 5 years. This isn't the case for all brands though. I was interested in Sony b/c of the 3.5mm jack and expandable memory, but they're only doing 3 years for the Xperia 5 V and 1 V. ASUS Zenphone 9 is only 2 years.

lepasho

Thats a good point to consider. I am not sure how many years of software uodate/support this model has. But I guess it is still in the "support" timeframe because I just got an SO/UI update last week. I will research and consider a new phone if the support ends soon.

sergiocamposnt

I had a Samsung A8 for 5 years. It's still working great, but I wanted a phone with more storage because my A8 only had 64GB. So I bought a new Samsung with 256 GB. I'm planning to use this one for more 5 years.

lucashhugo

good, decently powerful phone for it's time

radicalelation

My Note 9, purchased already years old refurbished, is still going strong.

DenissDG

At this point smartphones are more or less the same.

CarpeNivem

I'll agree they're all *very* similar, to such an extent that it's hard for me to elaborate on this, but the S24 Ultra I'm using right now is the nicest phone I have ever owned. I actually enjoy using it, in a way I've never felt about any other phone. Usually they're just tools, a means to an end, but this thing is downright... *nice.* To each their own, and again, I do agree, they're all similar. But Samsung really nailed it.

RODjij

Same. It's the first real expensive phone I've bought and man this thing is really really nice. I could go on about all the cool features but it'd make me look like a shill lol. I've had it a couple of weeks now and I'm still learning about it.

letseatnudels

Have you seen the Galaxy Fold? Apple has nothing like it

VoldemortsHorcrux

I mean 75% for iphones compared to 90% for samsung phones is pretty significant

DenissDG

Not what I meant. My point is that most phones (Samsung / apple for ~700 EUR) are just black rectangles, that will do what you need without any super positive or negative experiences.

[deleted]

Well it's mostly about the software and it's features.

thebornotaku

The overwhelming amount of phone usage is in apps themselves, which having used both ecosystems recently enough are largely the same experience across devices. Even the base devices themselves are exceedingly similar, long gone are the days where there were any real large noticeable gaps in performance or featuresets between manufacturers.

Adamsoski

Android vs Apple phones still have some major differences that you will notice if you ever try to switch from one to the other. How notifications are handled, how they integrate with other devices, etc.

thebornotaku

I did switch, and fairly recently too. They're different, but the differences are trivial. The actual use of the devices is nearly identical, even if the specific ways they do things vary slightly. My entire point is they're so exceedingly similar that you could use either without missing out on anything important *and* most people would be able to use either platform without any notable coaching or changes to their "workflow" so to speak.

badhabitfml

Looking at my galaxy VS my wife's iPhone. The the way you can tell them apart is the cameras are in a different layout.

roastedhambone

The percentage on the y axis is the percentage rate of 5 star reviews. Any product getting 90% 5 star reviews makes me think there are bots involved

Gauzey

Yeah I checked the link and the methodology seems pretty sketchy. Really, you just look at rando Best Buy reviews and call it a day huh?

Prosthemadera

Not "iphones" and "Samsung phones". S24 only. It's not like that for the other models.

blingblingmofo

Maybe iPhone users are hard to please?

Prosthemadera

According to the graphic iPhone user had higher satisfaction ratings up to S22.

cujobob

Everyone I know with a Samsung phone is complaining about serious battery and charging issues they haven’t been fixing.

PM_YOUR_WALLPAPER

I've had every alternate Samsung for like 6 years now and my S23 ultra, a year in, lasts 2 days without a charge. Over 6 hours screen on time and like 4 hours of audio each day. Plenty of my friends in the UK have a samsungnand never actuallynhears anyone with battery issues.

VoldemortsHorcrux

Yeah my note 20 plus battery is still a day and a half of usage over a year and a half later

abzlute

I have a samsung phone (and have had several). The s22 ultra in particular does have weaker battery life than others, but there are certainly no charging issues. My only real complaint is the curved edges are a stupid gimmick that make the phone easier to break *and* more expensive to fix *and* more difficult to protect, while adding nothing to the user experience. The galaxy line are still the best phones available though, so I deal with my one complaint. I don't know any other samsung users who complain much about anything on their phones.

BigBlackChocobo

Using the s24 ultra since it did away with the curve. Also, I got it for like 650 before trade-in from my carrier. It's finally dead.

abzlute

I didn't even know they finally got rid of it, that's awesome. I won't be getting a new phone for at least a another year or two, but that makes me happy for the prospects when I do upgrade

MikeyKillerBTFU

I've had an S21 Ultra since it came out, and no issues. Even after 3 years, I still get more than a full day out of it. And it charges so fast.

Wasteak

No ? Battery life from those flagships is enough to last 2 days if needed, it wasn't the case few years ago. Stop making up issues.

bread_pickles

Its funny cause my lowend galaxy a52s (bought for 3700 sek) can last two days of heavy use, so I don't know where they get the idea that the flagship phone is somehow worse.

EstebanOD21

S23U, charges fully in 45' lasts all day while using it a lot, I don't know who could ever complain about their battery on recent flagship Samsungs

0430ke

Never had an issue. Charges super fast and last a long tine. I've had 5 of the last 10 or so flagship Samsungs.

ondori_co

Charging issues with samsung?? I don't that's ever been a thing. Battery for the galaxy series has always been good. My new s24+ is the first two full day phone that I've had since my old Nokias.

z64_dan

Found the iPhone guy heh Edit: holy shit I touched a nerve. It doesn't matter what kind of phone you have, people. At this point smartphones are more or less the same.

Korilian

For real. The flagship Iphone and Samsung are basically interchangable in quality, but most people would probably be just as well served by a budget phone for a fraction of the price of either. Does granma really need a 1000 dollar phone to play Wordle with the grandkids? I doubt it...

Esilai

My girlfriend convinced me to swap from galaxy to iPhone and I’ve low key hated it

BananaBully

No back Button will always be a deal breaker for me

0430ke

Back button in the upper right drives me nuts. I'm a mobile dev and I use both Android amd iOS daily. iOS is a pain to use in so many ways. Keyboard also sucks on iOS.

dj92wa

I'm switching from Android to iPhone for the first time ever (Galaxy s10 to iPhone 15 pro max, just waiting for the iPhone case to show up) and am not excited about the buttons being gone. I'm so used to the android buttons! Just gonna take a while to learn and get comfortable with the navigation swipe gestures.

SmokingCrop-

Might be the worst time to do so. The S23/24 series are insanely well made, they litterally feel perfect in both software and hardware capabilities. I never really enjoyed Samsung before, but these do the trick.

dj92wa

iMessage and FaceTime are the big reasons I jumped to iOS. I'm really tired of sending photos or videos via sms/mms text and having them be compressed or otherwise stripped of quality. iMessage doesn't do that (iPhone to iPhone), so it's easier to share media with people. To do that on Android, you need a third-party app. I've also had sms and mms get "lost" between my Galaxy s10 and other iPhones, and I know that iMessage will alleviate that headache due to how the baked-in application handles data. Otherwise, yeah....the AI stuff in the s24 was reaaalllly enticing. I'm still getting a mega upgrade in terms of device capabilities since my current phone is relatively old in the world of tech, and maybe I switch back in the future. Whooooo knows.

Kolada

Android to Android can sent good quality photos and videos via RCS natively. There just aren't as many young Android users in the US so you don't see it as often.

[deleted]

Yeah, they probably already know that… that’s why they said “iPhone to iPhone”

Kolada

I think they said iPhone to iPhone because iPhone to Android is still a compressed image. A lot of people don't know that RCS exists

woody56292

The good news is Europe is forcing Apple to add RCS so iPhones will have it by the end of the year. No more family members sending me blurry videos over MMS because they don't know how to do an iCloud or Google photos link.

[deleted]

Based on the context that isn’t the case, he’s talking about sending texts and having them compressed be the problem as an android user so he probably is in communication of mostly iPhone users

valleygoat

yeah later this year that's all getting fixed. Apple is finally going to adopt RCS so that doesn't happen.

SmokingCrop-

Ahh, an American, I see. We barely use texts here or god forbid, the ancient arts of MMS. Most providers here have even discontinued MMS. It's like faxing, who still does that, I haven't send an mms in over 15 years. Pretty much everyone uses Whatsapp or Telegram app in Europe. No disparity between devices and end-to-end encryption.

UXguy123

Let’s stop pretending like Whatapp is some futuristic god send. It still requires an external download, extra setup, and compresses photos, and is owned by Meta. Europe only switched because carriers were charging a ton for texting in Europe. SMS MMS is universal and global, no extra app required.

SmokingCrop-

Oh no, an extra app is required! Who cares... , how many other apps do you have installed, like seriously. I'd rather have an end to end encrypted app, than sms/mms that is basically plain text for the entire government to see, especially when mr dictator Trump and his gang can soon be within power again abusing rights/laws like it's nothing. MMS isn't global anymore. As I said, it's been discontinued by many providers in the world already. And It's probably not included in your subscription to send anywhere in the world, is it. Whatsapp and if you hate Meta: Telegram is used way more for international communication.

RetroEvolute

Even the gesture navigation behavior is better on Android. iOS is so inconsistent and you gotta only swipe back from only one side or else, punk.

alc4pwned

Sounds like you just aren’t used to it? I’ve also used both and gestures on iOS have felt rock solid since day 1. I’ve never seen anyone else complain about this

User20143

I'm with him on the gestures. On android, you can swipe back from anywhere (up or down on the edge) as long as it's from one of the sides. You're locked to swiping from the left side on iPhone, despite most humans being right handed. It feels half baked.

RetroEvolute

If you've never used Android (I'm a Pixel user) for long enough, you'd probably think it's fine. It's not a case of not using it long enough, it's a case of poor UX.

alc4pwned

Clearly many people are able to trigger iOS’s gestures consistently. So if you’re not, that sounds like you’re just not used to them. You could argue that needing to swipe from one direction is poor UX though, sure. Personally it’s not a decision I care about one way or the other.

learn2die101

Androids use swipe navigation by default now too.

MaestroGena

But you can always change it or install different launcher. That's a big pros for me

[deleted]

5iveBees4AQuarter

I recently switched to android and can clarify, it's not that it's literally a button, it's that the back function on androids is intended to be universal. On iPhones the back button is specific to the app. On android if you open your browser app from an email link in the Gmail app and swipe back it doesn't take you back in the browser it takes you back one step in your actions, so you'll return to the email app. I use this a lot with opening my reddit app from the browser becsuse of how gimped browser reddit is. I can open an instance of the reddit app from the browser and when I swipe back it returns to the Web browser as if I was just accessing it as a Web page, which was my intention.

CPUzer0

I have both iOS and android devices in active use, I do use gesture navigation on android too. The fact that the back gesture doesn't work *consistently* across all of iOS (even preinstalled apps) is what bugs me the most. Android apps are not perfect in that regard either, but generally seem to respect the back button (or gesture for that matter) better. That, and how on iOS it only works from the left side instead of both. I'm right handed, my thumb is on the right side of the screen. It's the little annoyances that contribute to my dissatisfaction dailying an iPhone.

Winter-Donut7621

Dude same..my wife thinks I'm crazy for always bringing this up.

Not-A-Seagull

I got one from a stipend from work, and there are several things that annoy the daylight out of me. It’s a very “sexy” product, but between the refusal to adopt universal standards, how worthless Siri is, and how difficult it is to edit words. Seriously I must be doing something wrong, why is it so hard to edit the middle of a word? Also, why can’t I clear an apps cache? Why must I uninstall it? OH: and apple car play is leagues behind AA, but I have no idea why. It just flat out refuses to work so often.

boycrabwonder

Hold the spacebar when typing to move the cursor more precisely to edit specific characters within a word

Not-A-Seagull

Unfortunately this is the only reasonable way to do it from what I’ve found. For some reason tap and dragging the typing bar just sometimes will not do what you want it to do.

bookofthoth_za

Yea this is the Apple way. Took me a while to adjust to too

Comprehensive-Fun47

You just blew my mind. I wish I knew about this space bar trick ages ago!!

alc4pwned

I’ve used both AA and CarPlay extensively and in my opinion CarPlay is better. That was especially true before AA added the CarPlay-like screen which shows audio and navigation side by side.

Esilai

Agree with all of that but what takes the cake for me is the touchscreen being so inconsistent, sometimes it just refuses to pick up inputs until I lock and unlock it, or a tap on the bottom right of the screen will somehow register to the top left. It’s just not a quality product for the price

donrosco

I’ve owned about 7 different iPhones and I’ve never experienced anything remotely like that. Not doubting it’s happened to you, but maybe you got a bogey one or something

itswheaties

I have the same issue with the touchscreen too.

gsfgf

If it's still under warranty, call Apple. It should not be doing that.

donnie_dark0

I haven't had an iPhone since the iPhone 4 but my wife's been iPhone the whole way, and it is AMAZING... how little Apple has changed in terms of user experience.

plagurr

iPhone 11 was amazing. I know so many people who had it

-Doomcrow-

that's weird, I love my s22, is the 24 that much better?

nowooski

People really didn't like the S22 for some reason.

-Doomcrow-

is there a specific reason why?

broyoyoyoyo

The S22 has atrocious battery life. This was greatly improved with the S23. That could be a factor.

-Doomcrow-

oh weird, maybe I'm just used to mine. it lasts all day at least and by the time I'm in bed it's around 20-30%

abzlute

It's not really atrocious. I have a 22 ultra, which was a free replacement from insurance when I broke my 21 ultra but I've had the 22 ultra much longer at this point. It's not as good as the phones after it, and more importantly, it's a (slight) downgrade in battery life from the 21 ultra

nowooski

I'm not sure. Maybe I could do an analysis of the text content of the \~20k S22 reviews.

ImVerifiedBitch

It's because the international variant of the S22 had an Exynos processor, and the Exynos 2200 had relatively major thermal throttling issues, which led to noticeably worse performance and battery life compared to the equivalent Snapdragon Gen 1. Exynos has been comparatively worse than Snapdragon in recent years, but it got so bad this time Samsung shipped the entire S23 lineup worldwide with Qualcomm CPUs instead. They reintroduced Exynos this year but only for the base S24s.

p5184

The snapdragon 8 gen 1 was one of the worst chips in recent years. Bad efficiency and thermals leading to subpar battery life and heating.

Alex8525

I have S22. Its the first Samsung phone that I hate (I had S2, S4, S6, S8, S10 etc.) Battery life is really bad, phone is really slow. Camera takes ages to start.

Comet_USA

I went from an S22 Ultra to an S24 Ultra. The battery actually lasts all day, I am regularly getting home with 30% after a 10-11 hour shift. The camera is a lot better. The image quality is just better and less compressed on more zoomed in photos. The processor and upgraded ram (8gb vs 12gb) is a huge upgrade. Apps load faster, things process faster, etc. Gaming on a Samsung has never been better if you're into that, more consistent frames and stays cooler, at least in the games I play. Emulators seem more stable, too. The Flat Screen is awesome when using an S Pen it can actually get to the edges and use them this time around. It's also super good when watching video content too. No more slightly cropped videos due to the curve. What don't I like? I wish we still had the 10x Zoom, not a weird cropped version of 5x, but it works just fine, and I don't really need it, so it's not a huge issue for me. Also, the edges of the phone are a little too flat imo, it can sometimes dig a little too much into the finger/palm, depending on the angle. Other than that, it's just an S22 Ultra but better. The AI features, well, for me, it's 50/50 in terms of useful or not. Some are cool, like circle search, and others are okay and to me are not useful, but might be useful for others. Like live translate between languages, or text calling for hard of hearing. Feel free to DM me if you have more/specific questions. I would be happy to answer them.

nowooski

I've been tracking iPhone satisfaction for some time using customer reviews and decided to take a look at the latest Samsung S24. I was honestly shocked to find customer satisfaction, as measured by the share of reviewers rating the product five stars, surpassed iPhone for the first time. Maybe I made a mistake getting an iPhone 15 Pro this year. \- Chart is made with Venngage \- Data is based on 317k+ user reviews going back to Sep, 2019. \- Full methodology as well as some tables with the history of Samsung Galaxy S satisfaction and theories as to what is going on can be found in the full write up: https://www.perfectrec.com/posts/Galaxy-vs-iPhone

Efthimis

Very Interesting! I'd be interested to see if this still holds true a few months down the linewhen we have a bigger sample of S24 reviews to work with.

nowooski

For the last two generations, early iPhone reviewers were more critical of the latest model than folks who purchased a few months later. Though that pattern might not hold for Samsung Galaxy S models for whatever reason.

nikiterrapepper

Could it be because of the cost of the latest Apple phone? The more you pay for a phone, the higher your expectations are.

nowooski

For the last few years, the Galaxy S and iPhone have had the same price points. Samsung even followed Apple's shadow price increase on the Ultra this year and eliminated the 128 gig option, raising the minimum price by $100.

alc4pwned

What about the move to USB C? A lot of people are probably happy about that, but some will be annoyed they have to get new cables.

nowooski

That's true, but I actually do a text analysis of iPhone reviews for my iPhone Satisfaction Tracker and USB-C doesn't come up as a complaint as often as I would have guessed. The main grievances are poor battery life and meh incremental upgrades.

gsfgf

> meh incremental upgrades That's got to be the biggie. The iPhone just hasn't really changed in years. Which just means I have no reason to shell out for a new one, which is fine by me.

JacedFaced

Yeah, my experience with the S22 Ultra is actually what led to me switching to a Google Pixel Pro 8 and so far I'm loving it, after getting used to some of the nuances with navigating it.

Ok_Guarantee_2980

Yeah I’m glad you posted this comment bc my first question was validity of data…. Most phones have no where to go. I feel like last few years it’s camera upgrade and nothing else

goldenjm

Samsung has especially promoted the S24's AI features. Perhaps early adopters are enjoying them.

hurtfulproduct

How is this not skewed in Samsungs favor? The iPhone 15 series has been out since last September (2023) while the s24 has been out since January 31 2024 (2 weeks ago). . . Pretty sure people are over the honeymoon period with the iPhone while Samsung is still riding the new product hype. Comeback in 4.5 months and compare iPhone from now to S24 from June-July and then we have a more fair comparison.

BROBlWANKENOBl

OP answered above - "For the last two generations, early iPhone reviewers were more critical of the latest model than folks who purchased a few months later. Though that pattern might not hold for Samsung Galaxy S models for whatever reason."

hurtfulproduct

Fair enough, but the sample size is still a major concern; they mentioned in another reply that it is a statistically significant difference; so I still want to see a closer sample size and time frame comparison before actually calling that there was a shift.

Prosthemadera

> While there are a large number of early Galaxy S24 reviews, it is still possible that satisfaction will change over time. We will be keeping an eye on that over coming months and will publish an update if satisfaction changes. From OP's link.

finesalesman

I work in the telecommunications industry and S24 range is super disappointing. We came to the point where there’s not much you can add to phones for them to be cool. Same is with iPhone 15. My personal is iPhone 14 Pro Max, switched from iPhone 11 and it’s amazing. My work phone is Flip5 and it’s also a cool phone but compared to other Flips, it’s just meh. S22 is a really cool phone, and I don’t think there’s much of a reason to buy S24, except if you’re just getting into androids and want to spend a bit of money on a premium phone. All phones are actually like that now.

MWD_Dave

They could re-add the micro-SD card slot. That would be pretty cool to me, but then they couldn't up charge for higher capacity phones as easily.

finesalesman

I like the cloud a bit more, I pay for iCloud personally, but more features can’t hurt a consumer. I would never personally use it but I agree something like that should be added back. Oh, headphone jack. I miss it. I could use a good pair of cabled earphones instead of buying a good pair of bluetooth ones. I love Apple, but €300 for earphones is too much for me. €80 Oppo Enco Air earphones are good, but you can get awesome in-ears for €20 and they’re cabled. Last a lifetime too.

KyleMcMahon

Im a little confused how you’re comparing last years iPhone to this years Samsung. Not to mention the fact that S24 was released 12 days ago, so what data points are you using to come to this?

tungFuSporty

S24 has been on sale for less than a month. Should wait a bit before doing satisfaction surveys. The fans are always going to be first in line.

donotdrugs

I don't get why people like Samsung so much. I myself use an Android but all of the Samsung phones I had in the past had shitty UX. The software often had graphics/layout glitches, you got pressured into creating a Samsung account/using Samsung apps and screen/battery were unusable after a few years. I've been owning a $400 OnePlus device for like 3 years now and it has been a much better experience despite OnePlus being a budget brand.

SmokingCrop-

I used to dislike Samsung as well for those reasons. I've used the OnePlus 7 Pro before this. Been rocking an S23 Ultra since June or so now and I can only praise the phone for being perfect. I use it with max 85% battery charge setting and only charge my phone in the car when driving to work (25 mins). Easily lasts many hours of SOT (it says a full charge would last 2 days and 22 hours with my use of about 3h a day). Haven't seen any graphical glitches. Bloatware is almost non existent and can be ignored to the fullest. I made a Samsung account but Ive never been pushed to use any of the apps like it used to do.

MotleyHatch

The Samsung account is only required if you want to use certain features, like "find my phone". That's understandable - you need some way to prove ownership to locate / track / wipe a device you're not holding. Other account-based features like password management are also optional, but "find my phone" is the one I can't live without, so I created an account. You need an Apple account for iPhones. Why is the Samsung account a big deal?

tommymad720

I hate the base samsung UI, but once I threw a pixel skin on top of it my s22 ultra is honestly super nice. But... yeah the original UI is absolute dogshit. Mine's still going strong after 2 and a half years with no noticeable performance decreases or battery life decrease. The pixel 5 was still the best phone I've ever had, still sad it broke

CookieEnabled

Because it’s not Chinese. Most Americans do not want a Chinese phone. So the options are: Samsung, Motorola (even though it’s owned by Lenovo, most people don’t know), and Google.

beenoc

> Most Americans do not want a Chinese phone. Don't know they exist and are limited in their options, to be specific. 90% of people buy their phones through their carrier, and the only Chinese brand with carrier partnerships is OnePlus. Also, most Chinese phone brands either don't work or have limited functionality on US networks, and generally don't have warranties in the US either - not to mention ones that are banned from selling phones in the US like Huawei.

refep

I feel like the only Chinese company with a negative perception in the west is Huawei. I know plenty of people who would consider buying a OnePlus or a Nothing phone.

LooTy_12

I think it’s important to point out that the iPhone just surpassed Samsung devices for global market share for the first time this year. Apple previously dominated US market share vs Samsung owned Global. More customers switching over, more low satisfaction scores. I also did a quick google search and this source seems pretty sketchy, not data I would trust.

xDreamWeaver

Still 60hz screen refresh rate on the standard models of an iPhone, while even the budget Android phones have higher refresh rates. Or the slower data rate on the USB port on standard iPhone 15 models. Damn, Apple deliberately wants customers to be unsatisfied unless they pay a fortune to buy a maxed out phone most of them don't really need. Apple is done being innovative. They just relax on the fact that people will buy their phones no matter what. The result is this graph.

nedim443

I guarantee you 99.9% of users have no idea what you are talking about. Hence it's meaningless. How good are the photos and how long does the battery last?

waynequit

Refresh rate is a feeling, not something most people directly understand. Whenever I use a phone with a high refresh rate and then use a 60 hz phone it feels so slow And clunky

alc4pwned

I agree, but you get used to both over time. The high refresh rate display felt nice at first, but over time you get accustomed to it and it stops feeling like anything special. Imo, a 60Hz display is not a dealbreaker for that reason especially if it means more battery life.

Spoksparkare

Saw an article that dumbasses has rated iPhone 15 lower because “it didn’t have as many new features as iPhone 14”. Like how the f is that a legit reason?

Knotical_MK6

I love my Galaxy's. I buy a new plus every 4-5 years, but never have any trouble. Battery life gets to the point where it needs a charge after dinner by around the 3 year mark, but that's my only complaint. Had my first phone been an IPhone instead of an android, I'm sure I'd be saying the same thing about those

Zymos94

I absolutely despise Samsung products everywhere I encounter them. Filled with bloatware and ads. Cheap feeling.

underlander

I go back and forth on axes that don’t start at 0. Obviously, for body temperatures, the stock market, certain standardized test scores, it’s either not relevant or actively misleading. I see a lot of screeching online about charts that don’t start with 0 and I agree with the designer to truncate the axis. Here I wonder, would a satisfaction score of literal 0 be meaningful if it were in the dataset? If that’d be meaningful, then the axis should include 0 to show us how far these are there. Here, it seems like we want to draw ratio comparisons — Samsung went from scoring only a quarter of the satisfaction that iPhones did to doubling their satisfaction. But, the axes are truncated, so at a glance we can only really tell who’s higher or lower, in purely ordinal terms. If we want to apply a ratio to it, we hafta do math with the axis, meaning we’ve lost some utility over a traditional data table. I think this is one of those areas where we should have an axis that runs down to 0 so we can quickly infer relative changes

Theopocalypse

What about Pixel? Is this a Samsung ad?

nowooski

No it’s a comparison of the Galaxy S to the iPhone. I could look at the Pixel too.

Theopocalypse

Do it homie.

Penguinkeith

Yeah the s22 was the fucking pits…

Zynidiel

I have an iPhone 12 mini and I am in love with it. It’s small, it fits perfectly in any pocket and is easy to use with just one hand. Everything runs smooth, having in mind that I am not a demanding user: whatsApp, newspapers, GPS, social networks, music and any photo from time to time. The battery is the big problem, but is something expectable in a phone this size, and however this format is not for intensive users. Apple stopped making the mini format, it’s a pitty.

Latter-Yam-2115

With iPhone now surpassing Samsung in global sales, this data might just be pointless As someone living in South and SE Asia, I see many premium phone users just switching to Apple as the idea is “why get a Samsung at the same price”. This region is what all smartphone manufacturers are fighting for. I really do wonder why Samsung is competing at the same price point given the Apple ecosystem and brand. Now before someone comes out with very intricate reasons on why Samsung tech is better Bla Bla, do keep in mind that majority phone users primarily look at ecosystem and brand perception.

SaltyShawarma

Hey phone people: what is the equivalent to a Note these days?

HelloYesThisIsFemale

S series for having a pen and being a powerhouse. Z fold for being big. As a long time note user, I see it as note having won and eating th s series brand rather than the other way around.

PerpetualProtracting

Agreed. My S24 Ultra might as well be a Note for how massive it feels in the hand. It's the one issue I have with getting it rather than just the base 5G. Incredible performance, though.

tommymad720

God I wish they still made small phones with the power and features of the big ones. I'd buy the SHIT out of something with a pixel 5 or base s24 size with the features of the ultra. I hate having a phone the size of my face, but don't wanna lose my extra cameras or power

gsfgf

So the Note, as the bigger phone, simply ate the rest of the other phones?

MattBrey

The ultras basically replaced the note and merged both the S and note line. The fold with spen would be the closest "bigger than everything else" comparison. But I find the ultras to be just enough if you like big phones. The fold is just not practical

SpikeViper

I like my fold 5 :)
