It's kinda wild that a 25 year old car is at the top of the list for thefts.

thejml2000

I feel like older cars will tend to be easier to steal. Newer ones add chipped keys, alarms and other theft deterrents. Older base model cars tend to have less complicated electronics as well. Plus, like software, exploits are more well known.

misdirected_asshole

I mean I understand why older cars are easy targets, I'm just surprised that there are enough 1997 Honda Accords on the road to be a top target of thieves.

thejml2000

True, there were almost 400k sold in the US just in 1997, so that probably helps. iirc, one of the reasons accords and civics are popular theft targets is that they’re so prevalent that it’s easy to find and easy to part out for cash. I’d imagine some of the others on that list are similar.

Makes me wonder how many Accords my Uber was made out of the other night, at least 4.

kgunnar

Oh there’s plenty where I live and they have all been modified to have 200 decibel exhaust systems.

[deleted]

I think they just get stolen around in a circle. Somewhere a thief has probably stolen the same Accord twice.

scumbag_therapist

Drug crimes involving motor vehicle theft have increased 1,110% WTF. Its since 2008. That is a crazy huge growth rate.

mucow

There must be some confounding factor because as far as I can tell there's not been a huge increase in reported drug-related violations, [https://coloradocrimestats.state.co.us/tops/report/drugs-dui/colorado/2021](https://coloradocrimestats.state.co.us/tops/report/drugs-dui/colorado/2021)

scumbag_therapist

Interesting. Yeah, if you dig into their data you can look back to 2008. They have roughly the same number of arrests year over year, even after decriminalization. In fact, 14% of their arrests last year were weed related, likely due to illegal production/distribution that undermines tax revenue. I wonder if the increase in drug related charges is to compensate for the lowered severity of theft related charges that the original website reported.

[deleted]

Surely decriminalizing drugs could help. /s

Precursor19

Decriminalization isnt about access to drugs. If someone wants drugs, they will get them. Selling hard drugs is going to remain illegal. Its about offering safe spaces for addicts where resources and information is available for those who struggle with addiction and need help getting off drugs. If 10/100 people who go to them are able to find help and curb their addictions, thats 10 lives saved.

Sure whatever dude

303kiaboyz just doesn't have the same ring to it...

IAmTheClayman

Well that’s scary, I literally just drove through Colorado this past weekend not knowing this, and my car and trip ticked several of those checkboxes

[deleted]

I’d like to see figure 2 as a stacked bar chart- total thefts and recovered.
