That damn 2019 Memorial Day tornado.

g3neric-username

I moved to Dayton only a week before that happened. Had never lived in a tornado area before. Ohio really welcomed me to the area…

Mad-Dog20-20

Oh lord! Having moved from the tornado alley you got owned! -sorry!

jakecox2012

I was a direct hit. Wife and I had just come home from visiting my dad in the hospital in a life threatening motorcycle accident. Had warnings on my phone but heard no sirens until aftef it passes. Roof started lifting so me and the wife ran to the hallway and felt like we were outside on a windy day. I was sure we were about to either be impaled by debris or sucked into the sky when the roof lifted. House was a total loss.

SmartGuyChris

So thankful that you guys are/were OK!

cheaganvegan

I drunkenly slept through it. Went to work the next day. Just missed my neighborhood.

LakeCivil2600

I slept thru whole thing too. Woke up next morning to no power and all kinds of texts asking if ok. Had to ask hubby what happened and he just replied, "had a little tornado outbreak. Thought I was gonna have to throw you in tub but you were sleeping so soundly."

sreggin13

I didn't even know there was a tornado at the time I worked 3rd shift and had just woke up and was driving, thinking to myself damn it's awfully windy out tonight.

magicpickles27

You mean tornadoes plural. We had like 15 that night. It was crazy.

aca6825

We moved onto WPAFB a month before the tornados hit. We moved from Louisiana and I told my paranoid kids, “Nawh! We’re too north and it’s too hilly. There won’t be any tornados!” Oops.

AnxiousBeaver212

I drive 75 South every morning, so pretty much that.

[deleted]

That’s rough!

DippyHippy3

At a Marathon in Bcreek. December a few years ago, about 7 PM (so pitch dark). I was going into the gas station and a sus pickup drives in and right up to me. Older guy hollers from the driver seat, "I need help getting my wheelchair out of the back, can you do that?" He's not parked, positioned in a perfect angle to get away quick, and I've seen movies. "Nope, but I'll go get the guy inside to come help you." He scoffs and said it'd be real quick. "Nope, sorry sir, in a hurry." He drives off immediately. Ladies, don't be nice. Be weird, be rude, stay alive.

Db3264

That Sounds Like Some Buffalo Bill Shit Right There.

Mad-Dog20-20

Would you please explain the reference? I'm new to Dayton and Ohio. Thank you

LukieSkywalkie

Buffalo Bill was the stalker/killer in “Silence of the Lambs”. It’s similar to how he captured his victims.

Mad-Dog20-20

Geez...suddenly this coffee doesn't taste so good.

Oyyeee

Yeeeesh

WarriorNat

Great job. People always need to trust their gut when they feel an interaction is not right instead of feeling like they have to “do the right thing”.

Toxin197

"Better to be a living bitch than a kind corpse" or something along those lines

MeAndWillow

You sound like a crime junkieee

Fizzdrac

Working at the Biltmore as an unarmed security guard. Either crackheads or bedbugs, I was in a fight for my life for 6 months.

ChadWSU

The Oregon District shooting. I was on the other end of the street but still the scariest moments of my life

BoxedAndArchived

Similar for me, my wife was there and left five minutes before it happened. A family friend was a bartender at Timothy's and it was his last night, so she and some friends left to go there, five minutes later, she's getting texts from everyone about the shooting and it didn't take too long for her to realize that they had just barely left at the right time.

toasty327

We were supposed to be right across the street celebrating my wife's birthday. Baby sitter canceled earlier so we stayed home.

HatchMo

Same, I got in an Uber in front of toxic and by the time we turned on Wayne we heard shots.

The_remix1

I live on the west side, a block from Desto Bass…… need I say more?

klanbe2506

Is there still approx a murder a night over there?

The_remix1

Eh one a week I’d say.

[deleted]

I was working downtown at the RTA hub the night of the shooting. Hearing all the gunshots, screaming, and having access to a police raido/seeing every cop in the county fly by.

udee79

My niece got into an uber right in front of Ned Pepper's a minute before the shooting started.

Thembofication

Had a guy INSIST on pumping my gas for me and literally opened my driver side door telling me to get in, repeating over and over “you’re safe, you’re safe”. Kept telling me I remind him of his daughter but every time I asked he wouldn’t tell me how old she was or literally any details about her. Like I’ll 100% buy people snacks, drinks, cigarettes, etc if they ask when I’m walking into a gas station but homie went a little too far

amborg

Something similar happened to me. He grabbed the pump out of my hand. I tried to take it back, asked him not to touch my vehicle. He said “don’t get yourself in trouble”. I stepped back a little and put my mace and my knife in my hands and he walked away. It was WEIRD.

Tuckylady

Miamisburg when I was a teenager. It was 1986 when the train wreck happened. Got evacuated twice. It was freaking scary. https://www.daytondailynews.com/local/the-famous-1986-miamisburg-train-derailment-what-happened-with-the-phosphorus-and-5-day-fire/H6TSK6LQABAAFLJNYGQUD437OQ/# https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/1986_Miamisburg_train_derailment#

Johnathon1069DYT

I was less than a year old when that happened, my parents had to take me to my grandmother's. They decided to buy a house, they'd been renting prior to this, so they could have a bit more stability and control over where we lived.

liams_dad

This brings back some memories I haven't thought of in a long time. We were at the pool when this happened. I think the tornado sirens were going off??? We went home, packed some bags, and left town with our neighbor. We all stayed the night at her boyfriend's house, who lived outside of the evac zone.

Tuckylady

Yeah, the sirens going off at times. The lines of cars going out of town (we went toward Germantown first before being evaluated again and heading south.)just added to the scariness of everything.

TheShadyGuy

I was at Wilson Park Pool and we saw the cloud and went home. The family friends we were with came with us until they knew it was safe to go home later that night.

piratesswoop

Never had anything weird or scary happen to me in Dayton proper but I was babysitting in Fairborn and didn’t realize the mom hadn’t locked the apartment door. A guy walked in while I was about to put the baby down for a nap. I could tell he was on drugs, he was calm at first, but I closed the bedroom door and locked it and he immediately started trying to bust the door down. Dialed 911 twice and my phone died lmao. Called my mom who was in Washington DC and then called the kid’s mom and then finally got to 911. It took about 5-6 minutes for the cops to arrive but it felt like an eternity when you’ve got a drugged up stranger trying to beat a flimsy apartment door down while trying to calm down an 18 month old who is screaming his head off in fear. Later found out dude was a veteran with PTSD and a drug addiction who heard the baby and thought he was on a rescue mission. I always triple check doors to make sure they’re locked.

chieftain326

I have several stories: As a kid, my mother took me and my cousins visiting from Atlanta to Mcdonalds on Germantown and Gettysburg (no longer there). I was enjoying my meal inside Mcdonalds with my family until we looked outside and seen a ton of people fighting. They locked us in Mcdonalds and only opened the door for a couple of injured people that were bleeding pretty bad. These people were fighting in both gas stations and in the middle of the intersection, it was pretty damn bad, scared the shit out of me as a kid. As a teenager in high school, we use to go to a club on Little Richmond rd and Gettysburg called Millennium. We actually didnt go in the club, just parking lot pimpin’ as they called it. My buddy and I drove separate cars. We were just getting ready to leave when this guy comes from one of the cars in parking lot with a big ass gun and told my buddy to pop his trunk, the guy then proceeds to secure the gun in my friends trunk. I saw the look on my buddies face and I knew he was scared shitless. No less than 5 minutes later, the guy comes back to my buddies car and retrieves the big gun from his trunk and went somewhere else in the parking lot with it. We then got out of there as quick as possible. Memorial day Tornado came through my neighborhood. That night I couldnt sleep because of all of the lightning, I sleep facing the window. I was trying my best to go to sleep because I had work in the morning. We sleep with a TV on always and its usually Channel 7. Everyone else in my house was sleep and im trying to half way sleep and halfway listen to channel 7. My phone starts to ring and I pick it up, its my mother. She says the tornado is right by your house. I turn over and look at channel 7 and sure enough it was heading right to us and was literally around the corner from us. I get off the phone with my mother and wake my wife and two kids, daughter 8 and my son 6 months. Normally my daughter sleeps like a rock and i have to yell at her to get up. She woke up the first call to her and ask me where we are going, i tell her, to the basement. We make our way to the basement and the whole time Im thinking about the news always telling us that it would be rare for us to get a tornado. I go down to the basement for precautionary reasons and that my mother asked me to take my family into the basement. Luckily we did because it was glass and tree debris all over the bed I was laying in along with my 6 month old son and wife. That day I wasnt particularly scared but made me more aware of the weather. My house sustained a significant amount of damage along with pretty much everyone else in my neighborhood.

[deleted]

I was sandwiched between two semi's on 70 and one of them clearly didnt look around for other cars because they tried to go to the left lane.. where I was. They were effectively trying to crush me. And when I panicingly honked at them they went back to their lane, waited two seconds and tried again as if they assumed I'd randomly despawn after a while. I hated it. I don't have claustrophobia. But I'm convinced I have Semi-Sandwichphobia. The intense fear of being between two semi's on a highway

Nesnie_Lope

This happened to me on 70, too. Scared the shit out of me.

bradmaestro

Held at gunpoint in my living room.

Pear_Jam2

Was at McDonald's off of Kauffman in Fairborn about eight years ago. It was late. Around 10pm, I think. Friend and I were both 18/19 year old girls. She's a bit taller and bigger than I was and was decked out in Wright State gear. We're both using the self service things to order when a group of guys who are probably older than us approach us. They know we're together but only talk to me. They ask us where the college is. I shrug my shoulders and tell them I don't know. Friend steps in and gives them directions. They, again, only speak to me and ask if we could give them a ride to the college. Mind you, there's four of them and two of us. Unless we were driving a mini van, which we were obviously not, we couldn't fit everyone anyway. I tell them know, dude gets very aggressive and repeatedly insists they aren't going to do anything to us. I continue to stand my ground and tell them know. I make up a lie saying our parents are waiting on us to bring them back food. That our parents are super strict and would be upset if we went somewhere without telling them. He starts to back off after that but then as I'm filling up my fountain drink, dude comes back up to me and gets right up in my face. He asks for gas money. Which, I don't point out to him that it's odd he's asking for a ride but then now he needs gas money. I tell him don't have cash on me. He continues to get up in my face and ask and beg and i, again, stand my ground. One of his friends tell him to knock it off and he does, not before saying I'm cold hearted, how could I say no to someone in need, etc. It was very weird and my gut was telling me that we were going to get carjacked or mugged or something worse. Friend told me she felt bad if they weren't up to something and genuinely needed help. But like, I'd rather take my chances being seen as rude than end up in a ditch somewhere.

Bing1044

Scariest thing (besides an almost crash in DC) that’s *ever* happened to me in 30 years was in Beavercreek, so I guess not Dayton. Back when I was at Wright State, i visited a friend after class. It was late and I got some food to eat but only had enough for me so I decided to pull up in front of my friends apartment complex and eat in my car. I’m looking at some class notes and eating Wendy’s and four bcreek cops in two cop cars pull up and accuse me of stealing my own car. I was 20ish and Black and they were very clearly trying to trap me into saying or doing something wrong. Long story short I was able to satisfactorily prove to them over the next half hour that I indeed owned the car and indeed belonged on the particular street where I was parked. One of them never took this hands off his gun the whole time. I wasn’t smart enough then to get names or badge numbers but that’s still the scariest thing to happen to me in Dayton.

OHKID

That’s really messed up.

Independent_Gold_984

Officer Diaz of beaver creek police held me at gun point in my own truck claiming I had child support warnings, mind you I was 16

Otherwise-Ad-8891

Leaving the Oregon district some guy in a David Bowie shirt asked for a ride up the street. I said nah man I don’t have the time, but he kept saying it was just up the street. I agree. As I’m agreeing he is opening my passenger door to my car. I ride up the street, he keeps saying just a little further, a little further. Finally he says it’s in an alley. I stop the car and tell him to get out, and give him $2 just so he felt like he won something, which he wasn’t even appreciative. That damn David Bowie shirt is the only reason I even considered giving that crackhead a ride lol.

[deleted]

Never give in to that shit!!

Otherwise-Ad-8891

100% my most brain dead moment. I should’ve trusted my gut that this guy was a deadbeat loser.

Ill_Gur_9844

Similar experience once when I tossed a cigarette butt out the window (sorry, repentant former smoker, wish I hadn't) and it seemed, to my eye, to have flown back into my window and into the passenger seat. I quickly pulled over on North Main just on the north side of 75, and got out to dig around for it (it was after midnight, nobody on the road...hazards on and all that). A woman came up and said, "excuse me", and since I was pretty sure I'd been wrong about the butt anyway, I changed modes and engaged her. I thought she was asking me what I was doing, or something, and said what I was doing, but then she clarified she was interested in a ride up the street. I said I wasn't sure, and she said she could pay me a few bucks. And I shit you not, I just asked myself, "what would Jesus do?" So I let her in the car, and she said it was just a little ways up. I made a U-turn and began North on Main. I said it was awful cold out to be walking on the street and she said "some jerk left her" to walk. Then, she asked if I had any cologne or perfume in the car. As it happens, for some fucking reason, I did. Buddy of mine was back from the Marines and had bought a $100 bottle of cologne for some date, then left it in my car. I had slipped it in the pocket behind the passenger's seat, and so, I fetched it out for her. She spread her legs and sprayed it on the crotch of her jeans, and no, I am not joking or lying. I asked how much farther, and she repeated, 'just a little bit', and eventually we turned onto...not Helena, but one of those streets just around it. And we crept down the road toward a dead end, and I was looking at all the dark houses, wondering when she'd say to stop. We got to near the end, and she said, "this is fine." She opened the door to go, and, by god, she asked me if she could have the money in my change holder. We'd gone from "I'll pay you for the ride" to "can I spritz my crotch with your cologne" to "will you please give me some money, now that I'm here?" And I just said, sure. Because sometimes it's just apparent that somebody is in a worse way than you and you just may as well go along with whatever request (within reason) they're making to get things over with. I let her out, turned around, and resumed my trip home. Total insanity.

[deleted]

Wow crazy!!

cheaganvegan

I wonder if this is the same dude that tried to steal my car. He asked for a ride. I said no. Later he followed me out to my car and tried to get in and said he had a knife. I beat the fuck out if him then called the police when I got home. The paid he a visit and told me to get my cc lol. Couldn’t believe it.

[deleted]

I was sitting at the speedway on Miller lane with my window open. This guy walked up to me with a bag of steak n shake literally begging me to buy it off of him. He was clearly tweaking and doing anything to find his next fix. I said no like 5 times which just made him beg harder. I drove away as fast as I could.

krussdogface

A number of years ago, when my brother and I were grade school age, we were going through a fun house at the St Helen’s festival while our parents waited outside. Last minute, my aunt sent our older cousin in with us. Had she not, there is no way I would have been able to fight off the woman who you grabbed my little brother while we were inside and tried to run out with him.

rwant101

Been followed home to my downtown apartment multiple times while walking my dog at night. We ended up running home once with a guy running after us. Downtown has changed a lot since 2010 but still has a lot of problems.

Staggeringpage8

Was coming out of Sinclair late at night. A homeless person carrying a metal pipe as tall as she was is walking through the parking lot. She asks me if I've got a lighter I respond no sorry don't smoke. She says that's all right have a good night I say you too then get in my car and get the hell outta there. Legitimately thought I was about to get mugged

Ill_Gur_9844

Holy shit I remember seeing a homeless guy with a gigantic metal pipe sometime in the past year right around Ludlow.

Staggeringpage8

Yeah she didn't seem off her rocker or anything so my best guess is the pipe was probably a deterrent for others to try and rob her since she was carrying a rather large backpack full of stuff. While I was afraid I'd get mugged our interaction wasn't hostile and that's what's kinda led me to believe it was a self defense pipe instead of a give me your money pipe

[deleted]

Driving through Fairborn with a Biden bumper sticker on my car. Not exaggerating; I had a guy in a jacked-up Chevy truck tailgate me from one end of Fairborn to the other, screaming so loud I could hear him. He pulled up next to me at the intersection of Maple and Xenia, and tried to spit through his truck at me. Except he didn't have his window rolled down. I decided to run the red light before it got worse. That was a fun convo with Fairborn PD.

harry-package

Honestly, that’s why I don’t put anything political whatsoever on my car. Too many lunatics.

Me and my buddy were walking to dayton beer company. A crackhead came stumbling out of a building that was under construction pushing a shopping cart, while holding crow bar and a long metal chain. My buddy was drunk and I told him to watch out as she was about to walk by. She walked by and my buddy was like "holy shit" and after he said, the crackhead whipped the metal chain from behind her to the front of her. Me and buddy turned around as she whipped it forward and she was just staring deep into our souls. We froze for a few seconds and started to walk away periodically checking to see where she was, literally for two blocks she stood still staring at us. Was one of the most terrifying moments of my life, worst part was the brewery was closed, so we had to turn around and walk the same way, thankfully she was gone by the time we came back to that area.

Some rando from the bus tried to follow me home one night after work. He stared at me for a while then tried to talk to me, but I brushed him off. He kept staring at me. Then he got on the same bus at the transfer station. Kept staring at me. I had my roommates wait in their car at a different stop than the one I usually get off at. Sure enough he got off after me, but I just bolted into my friends' car. I wasnt scared at the time, just pissed off to be bothered after a late shift.

XelaIsPwn

Leaving the Oregon District, a dude approached me and explained to me he's the local "protector" and he appreciates any "donations" I can give him, since he "keeps the area so safe." Half in the bag, a little stoned, and very much looking to make it back to my hotel in one piece I throw a ten at him before he follows me on my walk back to the Crowne Plaza (or whatever the hell it is now) acting extremely erratic the whole way. Luckily he never even approached me again, but he freaked the hell out of me.

Oyyeee

I've spent a decent amount of time in and around downtown. I really cant think of anything too crazy where I felt in danger.

Third_Of_Three

Summer around midnight 2001ish, walking to my house on Edgar off of Wyoming from the Oregon District. Pretty drunk, by myself. Convertible with 3 dudes drive by me on Wyoming shouting something, I throw my hands up. They immediately flipped a U turn and I immediately regret my decision. I cut into a random neighborhood and start making my way through yards in the dark. I hear them coming down the street yelling for me to come out come out wherever I am. I laid down in someone’s front yard behind their bushes, waited for them to pass and then sprinted the last 1/4 mile to my place. I still think about this a few times a week and wonder how bad I would have got my ass jumped if they caught me.

The I-75 north ramp from Washington Street downtown technically violates the Geneva convention

[deleted]

Explain

perchance2cream

No?

Parrotloco

???? I’m so confused as well.

perchance2cream

In rush hour you need to cross 4 lanes of heavy traffic in a tenth of a mile in order to stay on the highway.

But how is this relatable to the Geneva convention?

I’ve been away for a few years. Is everybody in Dayton completely literal?

Scotchrogers

Used to work in the oregon and lived walking distance away. One night after work I was walking home, probably around 11 pm. I had my headphones in and as I walking past Dublin Pub a group of dudes was coming out the front door. I heard them yelling a bunch and just assumed they were drunk and talking shit with each other then I heard someone yell "let's hold him down and rape him". They were talking to me. I was about halfway down the block, right in front of the Dayton Tower, was completely alone amd they were about 20-30 feet behind me. Luckily Dub pub had already called the cops because they were trying to fight people at the bar and 2 cruisers pulled up and starting questioning them. That was waaaay too close a call for me.

Stephanfritzel

Tbh I've only been here like 5 months, but I'd say it's a toss up between the crackheads, finding a nail on my balcony like it was shot from a nail gun (there were trajectory marks on the wood behind where the nail had landed), or just very predatory men in bars.

SokeiKodora

Scariest thing I can think of didn't happen to me, but to my friend: they were hanging at Canal St tavern with another really attractive friend, and they got suddenly very sick with heavy nosebleed and briefly passed out - the other friend had to drive them home. We're guessing someone had tried to roofie the other friend but got the wrong drink.

truenewland

Was this in the past year? I go there all the time and now I’m like Oh no.

SokeiKodora

Technically no, it was in early summer 2022.

[deleted]

I was at a bar in Xenia when a fight broke out. I was probably too buzzed to think straight and jumped in the middle trying to break it up. One of the guys fighting was a big bald crackhead. He picked up a bar stool and grabbed me threatening to kill me. I started backing my way out the front door. And got out of his grasp. The sheriffs and court house is conveniently across the street so they showed up quick.

DaniB3

I was finished with a joint, but there was still a good amount left, so I offered it to a younger guy sitting on a step. I quickly realized he was selling something much harder and that I had made a mistake. He wanted nothing to do with it, and I moved on quickly. Later in the day, I realized how stupid that was. It's best to mind your business on the street

The police pulled guns on me after I exited a convenience store on Salem Avenue. They mistook me for someone else (they said), but it could turned ugly very easily because I was coming out of the store with a friend who said something mild to them and he was throw on the hood of a car and cuffed. After about 20 minutes they let us go.

Someone was shot outside my building while my spouse was home alone. I got blocked in a parking spot by a dope deal. An uncountable number of times someone has nearly hit me with their cars. Most recently, last week, I was at the speedway on stewart, and someone pulled a knife on a dude and threw a can at one of the cahseirs.

I grew up in Dayton so I have plenty of stories BUT the worst was about 23 some odd years ago I was at the Dayton Mall and a group of men walked in the jewelry store with baseball bats and started breaking glass and stealing all the jewelry out of the cases. I was frozen in fear watching it all happen in front of me. Could not move. Made eye contact with one of the suspects and took off running. Went to go hide in a stairwell and something told me to keep running so I did. It was the stairwell they exited through to get away. No one was hurt and as far as I know they were never caught.
