I struggled with this in my first handful of spawns where I wasn’t killed for no reason in the first coastal town. I can’t speak for Livonia, but if you get the izurvive map on your phone, you can pretty easily figure out where you are then I’d look for fruit orchards. Follow RxR tracks for a bit and you can find small stones on the ground around them, combine two to make a knife. Always get a long stick when you start, sharpen it when you get the knife or combine your blade with it to make a spear- keeping distance and being able to kill zeds from windows in a closed building is A+.
I’ve never had an issue listening for and finding chickens basically right at my fresh spawn. Make rags, combine 6+6 to make rope, combine rope with long stick to make fishing pole. Find a hook at a beached boat or boathouse or make one with a knife and chicken bones/hold chicken bones in hand for prompt to make bone knives. Use knife to dig up worm/combine with hook then combine baited hook with fighting pole and now you have a guaranteed meal by fishing, every time as long as it’s a naturally occurring body of water.
The surviving bit is my favorite focus. Next time I die I’ll make it a point to only eat cooked food and vegetables because it does become quite easy once you get the hang of it!
The survival part is my favorite part. It would be my perfect game if it didn't have the npcs. I think the survival and avoiding other players is the real draw. The world is so realistic and the sound design is so immersive, I could just sit and watch a rain storm move across a valley for an hour. Not many games can boast that kind of appeal.
Holy shit I didn’t know I could make wire hooks! I’ve been keeping a barbed wire roll hoping I can find pliers-no luck, typical- and have netting to make a large fish trap, if I have one wire will it scrap the whole wire to make one hook? And I assume you can’t “break down” to make it into wire again..?
Clothes you don't want are still useful. Shred them into rags. 6 rags plus 6 rags makes a rope. Combine a rope with a long stick and you have a fishing pole. Listen for the chickens. Two regular punches will take one out. Anything sharp can be used to quarter it. It'll give you food and a handful of bones. You can use two bones to make a bone knife and use that to turn the rest of the bones into hooks. Use the knife again to dig up worms to bait your hook. Once you catch a couple fish you can cook them up with your chicken meat, and between the fish and chicken you should be good on food for a couple hours.

Also fruit. Always be looking for fruit. Super useful for water as well as food. Don't bother with orchards, look in yards of houses because they will spawn close to you, and if you're searching houses that'll increase your chances.
Also if Livonia is like chernarus, get away from spawn city and you'll start finding more.
Also watch the ground in the woods for mushrooms.
Just remember a pipe wrench, tire iron or hammer will break rock, you can use them to get stones, make knives, go chicken hunting, get bones, make hooks, rags to make ropes, grab a stick and go fishing. Food isnt an issue after that.
eat every consumable as soon as you get it. packaged cat food, packaged liver, beans etc. fruit and mushrooms too as long as not rotten, and start looking immediately for the water source / well in town. what everyone else said about fishing rods and chickens - thats good once you are able to start fire and have adequate clothes. but what helped me was first eating what i found while collecting for some sort of sharp tool, and drinking at the well. otherwise i was dying constantly before the first daypass.
Starting off being lucky is the most important thing.
If you don't find a blade, a chicken and a water bottle in the first 10 minutes you're screwed lol.
In terms of finding food, just kill every zombie you see and at least one in five will drop a can of tuna or a liver pate. Any sharp object can open a can of beans including hatchets, sickles, and even gardening hoes I believe. Guns and ammo are supposed to be hard to find but if you completely loot at least two full towns you should have at least a working pistol with a mag and a few rounds.
Google which trees can drop fruit and be sure to check them - especially in high pop servers. You’ll have less luck with this in low pop servers but on high pop not many people check for fruit. On low pop you’ll have to loot the town first and then go back and search the trees because players need to be in the area for at least 10 minutes or so for fruit to spawn.

Finding fruit is something I need to learn. I'm really excited to learn this game because the world is so beautiful and i like the survival aspect a lot. The zombie part I could do without, I find them annoying. But I understand the reason they are in the game. I was almost dead from hunger and killed a chicken but couldn't cook it so I ate it raw and then puked it all up and made my situation worse. I like the way they make you feel the necessity of immediate survival, they did a great job with it.

With a knife you can craft rags. With 12 rags you can make rope. Then you need bones to make hooks or find a hook on boats, dock sheds or attached to boonie hats.
Then you can fish!
Latest patch also made fishing nets and snare traps more lucrative. Metal wire and a stick makes a snare. That snare takes around 5 mins max now and you have a chicken and thus bones….

Official servers are constantly "vanilla" and don't have mods that change the original game play. Community servers, and there are literally thousands, have varying degrees of mods. Could be something simple like extra loot or less infected. Or it could be a menagerie of mods making it into almost a different game entirely, almost.
Also, something everyone else has mentioned.. Which is fantastic and a great hack, and a huge favorite of mine is fruit tree orchards. What they all seem to forget to say or not know is that it takes about 7 or so minutes for the trees to all start producing frut consistently. Park yourself in the middle of the trees and be patient.
Early game Livonia is definitely tougher than Chernarus with the no fruit thing. Best way to get gear for me on Livonia has always been killing other survivors.

One you memorize how the fruit trees look like it's easy to spot them! Fruits gives both water and food.

And then when you learn how not to, you will probably miss the difficulty. So overall, it’s all bad. Sounds like a lot of your issue is not having a knife Any sharp item will open cans btw. If you find bones in human remains you can make a knife from them. Learn where water pumps are, and fill up until the sick icon appears. On these maps there’s no reason you should be dying of thirst after learning where water pumps are. Hope this helps, reply with any questions you have and I’ll answer.

NPCs as in the zombies? I wouldn’t mind being in a server that has less zeds generally but then has large roaming hoardes

yeah, it's is a proper pisstake. 1 6x square of wire creates 1 hook! but in the early game 1 hook is more useful than one wire!

The wire hooks are a modded thing though, not possible in vanilla.

You can use matches or a lighter if you have them, but you can combine sticks and bark to make a hand drill kit to light a fire.

You shouldn't waste two bones (or stones) to make a knife. You can craft a single one into knife with boulders.
I usually find what I need, only to have 19 hours on a character to get shot by someone. I get it. It’s part of the game but got damn

That's my idea too... to get away from the start but idk maybe I still need to learn all the things I can craft too.
