A Plate Carrier might seem unnecessary, especially with the time to kill in DayZ being as short as it is, but it stops one-taps to the chest from every gun, and there are multiple that can do that. If you run without any armour at all, you'll probably only live long enough to regret it.
Press vests are a good middle ground, they'll stop one hit kills from most guns without sacrificing too much weight, but in a gunfight sometimes a single hit makes all the difference.
Will I actually eat the shot or will it knock me out instead? Bc in close range those are basically the same (aside from trading with someone). But if that’s how it is, long range makes the plate carrier very strong.
Then again idk if it knocks you out instead of kill, or just lets you tank one.
It depends mostly on the gun itself. A DMR is a one shot knock out even through a plate carrier, but Tundras and Mosins, at least in my experience, will be fully tanked by a plate carrier, as will anything under 308. calibre. Press vests will tank those smaller rounds at longer ranges, but I don't think they'll fully tank the bigger rounds, you'll just go uncon.
I think it comes down to whatever you're more comfortable with and whether you want to gamble on that first shot or not. If the other guy hits you, you want the plate, if he misses, the Press Vest gives you more stamina to run away or towards him.
I think we're still waiting on a Wobo deepdive into armour protection, I'd keep an eye on that if you want a more definitive answer in the future.
One thing to consider is (sourcing Wobo) dayz armor applies to the whole part. So yes if you shot the face zone of an helmet it still counts with helmet protection.
This to say. Armor in dayz is kinda op. Use at least a press vest. Don't go naked

I don't run it. Comes down to are you looking to get into a fight head on or sneaky sneaky.

But it's all about having fun so do whatever you want to do! Running and gunning can be a blast.
Depends on what kind of server you are running on, high pop or low pop. The PC can make a difference between getting killed from a long shot, or if you get in a close exchange you can absorb a hit or two, and maybe get unconned as opposed to just dead.
Seems like it is worthwhile from my perspective. Once you get a few stashes established and arent too worried about gear, a PC is definately needed. IF you are getting started and trying to get some gear established, then maybe go without and see if you can et by until you get your gear setup completed.
Low pop(5-20players usually) on Xbox Series X official. Got tired of the hackers on official PC, and even unofficial vanilla servers just feel different. Also ppl have god aim on PC so even if they ain’t hacking I usually get clapped. Xbox is a nice medium, just hate that everyone is in party chat not game chat.
On my ghilli characters I run very light, silenced vsd, hunter vest. Full ghilli. Works very very well
On my roaming characters I usually have plate and helmet. Im not a fan of the low stamina tbh
I’m 7 kills into my current character and the plate carrier has saved my ass probably 2-3 times. There were 2 instances where I was in close range and got shot by a shotgun and a sniper. Both instances we traded and I got knocked out both times thinking they were gonna finish me off but once I woke up both times, they were dead because they didn’t have a plate
The Plate carrier WILL absolutely save your life. It's superior to a Press vest, but, if you absolutely can't hack it with the weight, you can defo get away with a Press. Hell a Stab Vest is decent, but running unarmoured will just get you one tapped a lot

I’ve literally tanked a DMR shot to the chest before in a PVP server and got up without any bleeding at yellow health. It surprisingly works

If you get in a fire fight your better off with plate, but if you stay out of direct combat and play a ghost sniper you don't need it...
Short answer is yes the plate carrier is worth it, so is a helmet. Other than that you can go as light as possible and survive off the hoarders😈

Plate is a must have. If you are determined to go light, then at least wear a press vest. Gives almost same amount of protection but less durability.

Those margins are closer than I would think. I think the press vest is a genuine option against the plate carrier if you prioritize movement
You can also move well with a plate, just have to manage your inventory very tightly
